POV: Lilly

She said, I was seven and you were nine
I looked at you like the stars that shined
in the sky, the pretty lights

When I was in kindergarten I met Oliver Oken. He had the big 64 box of crayons with the built in sharpener. I so I made friends with him so I could use it… never did I think I would fall in love with this kid.

And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
Growing up and falling in love and our mamas smiled
and rolled their eyes and said oh my my my

Every one always asked us if we were dating or if we liked each other… we always said no to both.

Take me back to the house in the backyard tree
Said you'd beat me up, you were bigger than me
You never did, you never did

Growing up people always said that he was a girl b/c he hung out with me all the time. So they dared him to beat me up… but when I told him to do what he had to do he said he couldn't do it. So we made it look like he beat me up, but it was our little secret that he simply rubbed dirt on my face and pants. I was good at making myself cry.

Take me back when our world was one block wide
I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried
Just two kids, you and I...

Our parents always used to let him stay the night at my house, so one night we were really bored and he suggested that we play truth or dare. I dared him to kiss me and then when he leaned in, I jumped up off the bed.

I was sixteen when suddenly
I wasn't that little girl you used to see
But your eyes still shined like pretty lights
And our daddies used to joke about the two of us
They never believed we'd really fall in love
And our mamas smiled and rolled their eyes
And said oh my my my...

At one point in our friendship, he stopped looking at me like I was that 6 year old who wanted his crayons, and looked at me for the teenager I was. But he still looked at me like I was his best friend, like I was his everything. I should have known then that he loved me too.

Take me back to the creek beds we turned up
Two A.M. riding in your truck and all I need is you next to me
Take me back to the time we had our very first fight
The slamming of doors instead of kissing goodnight
You stayed outside til the morning light
Oh my my my my

During the summers when it was warm enough, the creek by the park would dry up and we'd hang out under the bridge. That was where he asked me to be his girlfriend.

When we went there again, that was also where we had our first fight as a couple.

A few years had gone and come around
We were sitting at our favorite spot in town
And you looked at me, got down on one knee
Take me back to the time when we walked down the aisle
our whole town came and our mamas cried

We were sitting in the park, b/c the river had water and he got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. We were both 18 and we were in love. So I said yes. We had our wedding in that park and everyone we knew came. Both our mothers cried b/c that's the kind of women they were.

You said I do and I did too
Take me home where we met so many years before
We'll rock our babies on that very front porch
After all this time, you and I
I'll be eighty-seven; you'll be eighty-nine
I'll still look at you like the stars that shine
In the sky, oh my my my...

So we went back to my mom's house after and we sat outside together, just like we used to do, on the porch steps… I had visions of our future that our babies would grow up in this house just like we did. And I knew that when we were old and gross we'd still be sitting on this front porch and he'll always look at me like I was his best friend, his everything….
