Throughout the ages and across the world, there have been many stories and prophecies about what would occur at the end of time. Stories of violence and destruction and salvation.
Well, the end of time has arrived and judgment is upon us.
Deep within the mantle of earth and under the darkest sea, the legendary pokemon Groudon and Kyogre awaken. Driven by their instincts, they rise to the surface, bringing with them scorching sunlight and torrential rains. The legends of Hoenn sense one another and begin their journey toward each other. Their final battle is about to take place.
In Unova, the dragons of fire and lightning descend from the sky. After countless years, they face off once again. In the end, only one can remain.
Finally, high above Mt. Coronet in Sinnoh, a dark shadow appears. The shadow swallows the sky, leaving behind a void and from that void, the third dragon of creation materializes. Locked away since the beginning of time, Giratina's rage is unmatched. It will not rest until the world that Arceus created is destroyed.
In the World in Between, Mewtwo stands surrounded by Life and Death. He is here to bargain with the keepers of the realm.
"I need your help," he tells them. "And I am prepared to pay with my life."
"You cannot pay with something that already belongs to us, kitten." The eagle tells him. "All life and all death belongs to us!"
The eagle looks at Mewtwo with its hungry eyes again.
"But there must be something I can do!" Mewtwo almost begs. "I need strength to defeat Giratina! You are the only ones that can grant me that power!"
"It is true that we can give you strength, but this is not our fight, young one." The stag speaks softly.
"Then you would let the world die? I thought you were meant to protect life!"
"No, young one," the stag continues, "my task is to give life. I have no obligation to protect it."
Mewtwo looks at the stag and eagle in bewilderment.
"But…all those pokemon. They will die."
"Remember what I told you, kitten," the eagle tells him. "Everything dies. It is the law of the universe. Did you really expect the world to last forever?"
Mewtwo does not know what to say. Is this really the end?
"But there is still another choice you can make, young one." The stag tells him, giving Mewtwo a bit of hope.
"What is it?"
"You can remain here with us."
"What? Why?" he asks in confusion.
"The eagle and I are the keepers of this world, but as you can see, we cannot cross into one another's domains. But if you decide to join us, you will be given the power of the World in Between. You shall be the only being in existence capable of freely crossing between life and death, helping the souls of the departed into the afterlife. You will be immortal."
Mewtwo looks at the stag, then at the eagle.
"Think it over, kitten. If you leave our realm, you will die. You already know this. Either Giratina will kill you, or the Unown will erase you, but if you remain here with us, you can live on and see the new world that Arceus will create. What do you say?"
"Can you really do that for me?" Mewtwo asks.
"Of course we can!" the eagle responds. "We had someone like that here before."
"What happened to them?"
"Let's just say that he was being a bad puppy." The eagle says almost sadistically. Mewtwo suddenly notices that the eagle seems to be perched on the bones of some huge dog-like creature. A chill runs down his spine.
"Make your choice quickly, young one." The stag says to him. "There is no time to ponder. Will you take on the task of guide to the afterlife?"
In that brief moment, Mewtwo sees the world. He sees all the faces of the innocent creatures that will die very shortly if Giratina is not stopped. He also sees the faces of future generations that will not get a chance to live and see the world for themselves. Seeing them brings Mewtwo to his knees. He cannot abandon them. Somewhere deep inside himself, he is still a part of Mew; the part that loves all life. Mewtwo was created to be the world's strongest pokemon, but what good is all that strength if he has nothing to fight for? In that brief moment, Mewtwo makes his decision.
"No, I cannot stay here. The pokemon of the world need me." Mewtwo announces.
"How will you fight Giratina?" the stag asks.
"You will grant me the power." He tells them without fear.
"And what will you give us in exchange?" the eagle asks next.
"The knowledge of creation. Uxie gave it to me and now I shall give it to you."
"Ah, now there's something valuable. Agreed." The eagle tells him.
"Walk the path, young one." The stag instructs. "And claim what is yours."
Mewtwo walks down the center of the World in Between. At the end of the path, a single stone awaits him. A Mega Stone. He picks up the stone and feels its power flow through him. Now he has the strength to challenge Giratina. Without wasting another moment, he vanishes and returns to the world.
Mt. Coronet and the surrounding mountains have already been reduced to ash and rubble. As Giratina's shadow spreads, so does the destruction. Wild pokemon flee in fear, but in their hearts, they know that there is no escape. This is the end.
"I am the Adversary! I am destruction!" Giratina roars.
It flaps its mighty wings, leveling several mountains at once. Some of the braver pokemon stand and fight the dragon, but they are quickly wiped out. No mortal pokemon can match Giratina.
"That's enough, Giratina!" a powerful voice resounds throughout the land.
The dragon turns and sees Mewtwo hovering in the sky.
"Who are you?" Giratina demands.
"I am Mewtwo. I will be the one to stop you, Giratina."
"You dare challenge me? I am Giratina, the dragon of violence and destruction! None can stand against me!"
"You think too highly of yourself, dragon. I am the strongest pokemon ever created. You will not hurt anyone anymore!"
Mewtwo takes the Mega Stone and invokes its power. In a flash of light, he begins to transform, evolving into a pokemon far more powerful than ever thought possible. Mewtwo becomes Mega Mewtwo!
"This will be my final battle!" Mewtwo shouts. "Giratina, you will fall!"
"I think not!"
Giratina activates the power of his own Griseous Orb and morphs into his Origin Forme. With their attack powers maximized, both Ageless begin their ultimate battle.
It was said that the world's enemy would come from the Abyss to shroud the world in his darkness in the end of time and that a savior would appear wrapped in light to dispel the dark. Now the embodiments of the darkness and light are fighting for the fate of the world. Their battle rages across the land, the seas and the skies. Entire valleys are carved out and mountains are flattened. Giratina and Mega Mewtwo fight in that timeless eternity, but soon it is apparent who the stronger one is.
Mega Mewtwo shoots forward at impossible speed and rips through Giratina's wings. The dragon roars in pain.
"No! How can this be? I am destruction incarnate!" Giratina cries out.
"You will not destroy this world, Giratina." Mega Mewtwo tells him.
"With this power, you cannot possibly be a mortal. You are an Ageless, are you not?"
"Yes."
"Then you cannot kill me. It is against the Rules!"
"I am aware of the Rules, but I do not care. I have seen too much beauty in the world to let you run loose. It ends here."
Mega Mewtwo readies his strongest attack, Psystrike. It will be his last act.
"Goodbye, Giratina, the renegade pokemon."
"No! NOOO!"
Mega Mewtwo fires his psychic assault, striking Giratina from every direction. The dragon cries out one last time before his body disintegrates into nothing.
With the threat of Giratina finally gone, the shadow across the world dissipates, but the void in the sky remains. Mega Mewtwo reverts back to his regular form as Mewtwo. He is ready.
"I am here. Come and get me."
Suddenly, the sky turns black once again, but this time it is because the Unown have appeared. From that hole in the sky, an infinite amount of black creatures with a single all-seeing eye descend.
"Mewtwo!" They cry out in unison. "You have broken our Rules! For this, you must be erased!"
Mewtwo stands unafraid. He made his decision and he is prepared to pay for it.
"You must be erased! You must be erased! You must be erased!"
The voices of the Unown fill the atmosphere. They have made their decision.
Long ago, before Arceus hatched from his egg, Unown used their symbol-like bodies and wrote the Rules of Existence. They wrote everything that will be and everything that must be. Mewtwo broke the Rules. He cannot be allowed to exist any longer. That is what the Unown decided.
The Unown, the masters of the Universe, surround Mewtwo with their infinite numbers and they show him everything. They show him the words of the past and of the future and it is then that Mewtwo understands why he cannot exist and he accepts it.
With their bodies, the Unown spell out Mewtwo's name.

And slowly, they begin to erase it from the Record of Existence.

So this is how it ends?

...
And where Mewtwo once stood, now there is nothing. With their task accomplished, the Unown vanish back into the void and once again, the world is silent.
