A few months had passed since the new Guardians had been taken under the wings of the elder Guardians. It was a strange start for Hiccup, who had gone from prodigy back to zero in less than twenty four hours. It was a hard hit to his self-esteem. But as the weeks went by, he came to realize that North had nothing but respect for him. He would train every day from when the sun rose just over the horizon of the bleak hills, until the sky turned a vivid magenta. He would ride Toothless every day after training until the magenta of the sky turned a deep indigo. Then he, North, and Toothless would eat dinner, go to bed, and start over. On the weekends Hiccup got to enjoy doing nothing.
On this particular Saturday morning, Hiccup was drying his hair with a towel after a very long, steaming shower to relax his screaming muscles. Cinching the towel around his waist closed with one hand, Hiccup looked into the mirror and was startled with what he saw. It wasn't really him looking back into the mirror, but the reflection of a perfect Chief's son. He had grown quite a bit, which was probably the reason why his saddle wasn't comfortable. His shoulders were broad, and his hair had grown shaggy and fell past the bottom of his ears. His jawline had hardened and his features had filled out. The muscles on his stomach were defined, and a small 'v' lined his hips and disappeared under the towel. He had to admit, that he was defiantly not an awkward teenager anymore. He padded his way into his bedroom and pulled on a pair of lied thermal brown pants, a maroon shirt and knee high boots. He grabbed a tiny rubber band and braided some of the hair behind his ear. He nodded his head at the mirror and walked out into the expansive, castle like house. He looked around, the high ceilings and hustle and bustle of all the yetis and the jingling of the elves familiar and comforting to him. He walked into North's sitting room. A large oak table was pushed by the back wall, a large window behind it. A closet was off to the left side and a large door was to the right which led to a large bathroom. Right now the lights were off, and the rising sun cast a glow behind the large man leaning over the desk snoring. Hiccup shook his head and left the room, only to be tackled by the black dragon. Hiccup smirked, and opened the door to North's sitting room.
"Go get him bud." With that, Toothless flew into the room with a 'woosh' and knocked North to the floor. Toothless stood on his broad chest and licked his face, making his beard drip with the gooey saliva. North let out a belly-rumbling laugh as he attempted to push the dragon off of him.
"Good morning Toothless. Yes, yes, yes. It's nice to see you too. Now," he grunted and strained to sit up, "get off of me." Toothless sat on his bottom on the wooden floor and cocked his head to the side, his signature toothless grin splitting his face. North turned to the young man who was leaning on the doorframe. "Good morning Hiccup! I didn't expect to see you up this early."
"Yeah, I didn't expect to be up this early either. But I figured that we should probably talk about this whole Guardian thing. I mean, it's been four months, and I still don't know what I am." North let out a big sigh and rose to his feet.
"It's easier to just show you Hiccup. We'll leave Toothless here. Come with me."
North led Hiccup down a maze of corridors, and they reached the stables where he kept his sleigh. The yeti's strapped up his reindeer, and within five minutes they were sliding down a tunnel of ice. They shot out into the sky and they flew faster than sound. North landed on top of a rooftop, and looked around. It was early afternoon in the little British town of Framlingham. Many people lined the streets and moved in and out of buildings. Hiccup looked around the town in awe, having never been to a place such as this, then he nervously looked up to North.
"Aren't you afraid someone's going to see?"
"That's what we're here for my boy." North climbed down the roof and started walking the streets. North walked a straight path, as Hiccup maneuvered between the people, trying not to hit anyone.
"What do you mean North?" Hiccup asked, as he finally caught up with him. North took Hiccup to the middle of the street and stopped. A car just turned the corner and was barreling its way to them. "North, we need to get out of the street." Hiccup said, trying to walk to the sidewalk, but North held his arm firm. "North." Hiccup said more panicked than before. The car was inching toward him, and he was nervous enough about something that he'd never seen before. But it looked big, heavy, and painful. North closed his eyes, and let out a breath. The person never slowed down. Hiccup looked between North and the car quickly, tears threatening to fall. This wasn't how he was going to die! He trusted North, and now he was going to kill him?
The car drove straight through them, never stopping, never realizing that they were even there. Hiccup looked at his abdomen.
"What- what just happened?"
"You're a spirit. A Guardian spirit. Nothing can happen to you, unless it's done by another spirit." North said, walking back to the sidewalk. Hiccup was still frozen in his spot, but when North disappeared around a corner, he ran after him.
"Okay, so people can walk through me. That's a new weird, even for me." North chuckled and stopped in front of a woman, holding a small girls hand. The woman kept walking through, but the little girl stopped. She looked up at North, her green eyes sparkling. Her brown hair was separated into two pony-tails. She smiled a toothy smile, even though quite a few were missing. She couldn't be more than six.
"Woooah… Santa?" North winked at the girl and twirled his finger. Above it, a small Christmas ornament, a small teddy bear, spun in the air. He leaned down and whispered into her ear. She grinned.
"Mary!" She ran off to her expecting mother.
"Mommy, mommy!"
"Where did you get that?"
"Santa gave it to me!"
"What did I tell you about talking to strangers?" She looked up, and scanned the side walk. She didn't see him. "It is cute… alright honey, it's time to go home."
"Okay mommy." Mary said. She turned around and waved to North. Hiccup turned to him and looked very confused.
"Why didn't her mom see you?"
"She doesn't believe." North said like it was common knowledge. He looked at Hiccup, saw the look on his face, and explained further. "Those who believe are the only ones who can see you. Even if you believe in one Guardian, it doesn't mean you believe in all of them. It took Jack three hundred years to be seen." Hiccups eyes widened.
"He's… three hundred years old?"
"Yes."
"Will it take me that long to be seen?"
"Hopefully not. Jack has a good standing with the children of a town. So, you'll be seen. Your legend will begin. We'll have to find a story to start you off with."
"How about my own story?" With that North was the one confused. Hiccup took a sigh. They walked around the town until they found a bench. The two sat and Hiccup began his story.
"I come from village. It seems like a normal, everyday, run of the mill village, but it's cut off from the world. My village has maybe forty people, but we all know each other. The one thing we have that everyone else doesn't is dragons.
At first the dragons were a problem. We were at war. A good week would only be eight dragon raids. But as time went on, more and more dragons were coming to our village. It was hard, and the only way my people knew how to survive was to kill all the ones they could. But more dragons filled their place. My dad's the chief, and you saw me. I'm no chief's son. I was an embarrassment. One night, a particularly bad dragon raid had happened. I was put in the back in charge of fixing weapons. But when my supervisor, Gobber, left a dangerous dragon came into the village. It started demolishing everything in its path it thought was a threat. It's the only one of its kind. I ran for the catapult, praying to the Gods to let me hit it. I took aim, and was successful.
The next day I tried to find the body so I could show my dad what I was capable of. I found him tangled up in a net. I raised my knife to kill him, but when I looked into his eyes, I saw the same fear and vulnerability I felt every day. I knew that I couldn't kill him. I let him go free, but when he tried to fly away he couldn't. After a few days of studying him, I found that he had lost a tail fin. Because of me. Guilt consumed me. I spend more days with him. Learning his habits, his likes and dislikes. I bonded with him. I made him a replacement tailfin, and we went flying. He was mine and I was his. But at the same time I was studying him, I was in a school, a school on how to kill dragons and how to be a better warrior. I used my knowledge from Toothless to help me with the dragons and I made it through my whole time in the school, not hurting a dragon. Which made one of the people there angry. Her name is Astrid. She… hated me, I took her spot as top of the pack. One day she fallowed me when I was going to see Toothless, and she found out about him.
She urged me to tell my dad. I couldn't. Then one day, I was supposed to kill a dragon in front of a whole crowd. I absolutely couldn't do that. It was impossible for me. The dragon that I was supposed to kill got the upper hand on me, and Toothless rushed to my side to save me. But my dad wasn't too happy about him. The entire village tried to attack him. They wouldn't listen to me. When they realized that I was trying to protect him, the ganged up on me and took Toothless. They chained him up, and set out to find the nest of dragons to kill them and end the raids once and for all. They got there and pissed off this giant dragon. I got the others in the school to agree to ride dragons. They trained them, and they became theirs. Toothless and I almost died. Toothless was chained to a boat when it caught fire. He started sinking and couldn't get free. I dove in after him, but it was too much for me at that age. My dad saved me, then went back for Toothless. He later told me that seeing that much love for one person, made him think of the love he held for my mother who was lost. He then went for Toothless and when he was about to pass out, Toothless saved him too. Toothless and I took off and, with the help of my new found friends, defeated the Red Death. Hiccup shot a blast into its mouth. But the dragon exploded too quickly in its own fire. We were overwhelmed. Toothless wrapped me in his arms and took the brunt of the fall and all of the fire. I kept everything, except…" Hiccup looked at his foot, "Toothless is my best friend. I owe him everything." North sat there and looked at Hiccup.
"That's a very good legend."
