A/N: It's short, but it's sweet.

The next day was Mai and my first date. I had it all planned out, and I hoped that she would like it. While most of the other initiates were gone to meet their family if they came to visit, Mai and I snuck out and caught a train.

"Please tell me where we are going," Mai begged as we sat down onto the train. "Please, please, please!"

"No! What part of surprise don't you understand!" I sighed incredulously at her. "Patience small one."

"Hey, this small one can beat you around the fighting ring if she ever so wanted." She answered pointing to herself.

Mai and I had made up this morning after I apologised to her only about a million times and said that what she had done with the flask had been really clever. And that when she had scaled the statue without falling was awesome. Amar, however, was shooting her humiliated glares as his friends reminded him of last night.

"Hey," Mai said suddenly. "This is the way we went for the capture the flag game."

"Uh," I groaned. "You are too observant for your own good."

"Your team's stop I'm presuming." I nodded at her, and we jumped seconds later.

I grabbed her hand and we jogged, it was much easier now that it was daylight. "Where are we going?" She asked, trying to keep the same pace as me. I didn't see the point of keeping it a surprise anymore.

"The Ferris Wheel."

. . .

"Wow," Mai gasped as she walked up to the Ferris Wheel. "That is amazing. Can you believe that people actually went on that for fun?" She looked up at the big wheel, her eyes glazed in wonder.

"Picnic Mai," I reminded her.

"But we could see if we could turn it on and..."

"We'd get caught and in trouble," I answered.

"We could climb it?" She asked. "For the view?" I shrugged, I didn't see the harm in that unless she fell, and as proven yesterday, Mai was an excellent climber.

"Picnic first though," I told her. "I'm starving."

. . .

Mai wanted to climb the Ferris Wheel so we did, although she insisted that I went first. We were climbing fine until I decided to slip and I couldn't get my leg back on a foothold again.

"Oh God," I heard Mai swear. "Don't worry Eric, I have an idea!" I heard her clamour down the Ferris Wheel, and I clenched my hand tighter. In that moment I wished that I was a bat. When bats relaxed their claws, the claws gripped, that's how they stayed upside down while sleeping. I hoped Mai had a good, fast plan. I would only be able to stay up here for a minute before plunging to my inevitable death.

Then the Ferris Wheel started to creak and move. Oh my God, I must be going delusional or something. But the Ferris Wheel really was moving. As it grew closer to the ground I jumped off, and rolled, leaping up to my feet as Mai ran over to me.

"Are you okay?" She asked.

"Yeah," I nodded. "Thanks."

"It's pretty, isn't it?" She asked, gazing up at the Ferris Wheel, which was lighting up and spinning around.

"Come on," I said, grabbing her hand and pulling her towards it. "Let's go for a ride."

We jumped into one of the carriage things that we presumed were where you sat, and she spun slowly around in a circle. Mai had her head against my shoulder and she was taking in the scene.

"This is so romantic," she whispered. "Thank-you."

"Why are you thanking me?" I whispered, feeling that if I talked out loud it would ruin the moment. "I didn't plan this part."

"Yeah, but you planned the picnic. You are amazing." And we stayed like that until it started to get dark and we had to return.
