Chapter 5
I looked between these two crazed up fruit loops that were apparently vampires but I wasn't scared as I thought I would have been. I knew I should've been freaking out but a weird sense of calm had come over me.
"Well, now that we know that you know, I would just like to know how you know." Crazy lady said.
"What?" I asked. How many times had she said know in that sentence?
"How do you know we're vampires?" She clarified. Thank goodness she did or else I wouldn't have know how to answer.
"I figured it out." I said looking back and forth between them again trying to figure out why I wasn't that scared anymore.
"The attitude's not necessary." The lady said glaring at me.
"Well I don't really think that was an attitude 'Bekah." Elijah said walking up next to her to look at me also. I instinctively backed away a little. "I thought she was Juliette as a vampire and I mentioned it a little. That might have given her a hint to what we are."
That really hadn't given me a hint seeing as I had tuned him out, but I just let him think what he wanted.
The girl, who Elijah had just called Bekah looked thoughtful for a moment before she looked back at me but talked to Elijah, "I think Niklaus' visit last night might have too." She started talking to me, "What do you remember from last night?
I wanted to say, 'Well, your ass-creepy friend took my blood and then drank from my neck.' But the words wouldn't come out of my mouth. My eyebrows knotted together in confusion before I realized the ass-creep used his mind control powers on me.
"Not fair." I muttered quietly looking at my shoes.
"What's not fair?" Bekah asked me.
I looked up at them. "Do you have mind control powers?" I asked.
She stood up from where she had been squatting in front of me. "He obviously compelled her." She said to Elijah. Yet again, my question, not answered.
"What do you want from me?" I asked them. 'Bekah lady gave me a smirk and looked over to Elijah.
"We don't want anything with you." Elijah said gesturing between himself and the girl called Bekah, "It's our brother, Klaus. He figures you may be the answer to all his prayers."
"And what prayers are these that I am the answer to?" I asked after he only somewhat answered my question. I don't want to be the answer to anyone's prayers.
"Those details aren't necessary because you aren't." Another voice said just when Elijah opened his mouth to talk. "The answer to my prayers that is." The ass-creepy man from the night before walked into the house. I gasped when I saw him and backed further into my corner.
"So the werewolf didn't turn?" The lady asked him. Werewolf? I guess I shouldn't be surprised sitting in a room full of vampires.
"No. She died just like the others who hadn't been turned with Elena's blood." He said while striding over to me. Oh, so he didn't even flinch when he said someone died. Nice. Pleasure to make his acquaintance.
As he walked toward me I tried to back up farther but I hit the wall. When he reached me he bent down in front of me and was creepily staring at me for a long time.
"What?" I asked when I couldn't take his creep-staring any longer.
"I'm just wondering why you exist." He said to me glaring at me.
"Well you see, when a mommy and a daddy love each other-" I started before looking up in his face and seeing how extremely angry he look and stopped.
"It is probably just another curse with a doppleganger Klaus." His sister said to him ignoring me. Oh, so his name was Klaus. Why was creep-lady talking about doppelgangers? Aren't those those twin thingies?
"It doesn't involve us. We should just leave and go find Katherine." She continued.
I was not looking at the girl when she talked but the guy Elijah. When she said the name Katherine his eyes flashed very quickly. It was almost unnoticeable. Almost. "But Rebekah." He said very quickly. It was obvious to me that he was staling for some reason, "How do you know that this girl's curse has nothing to do with us?"
Wait my curse? What?
"Yes. How do we know?" Klaus said from in front of me, still staring at me. "Elijah, do you recall any other curse than mine that required a doppleganger?"
Again that doppleganger word.
After pondering the question for a moment Elijah answered, "Not that I remember."
Klaus smirked and finally looked away from me turned to Elijah. "Looks like we have a full blown mystery on our hands."
"Can you solve it after we find Katherine?" The lady called Rebekah asked, "I want to find this cure."
"Leave then Rebekah." Klaus said. "I want to figure out what curse she belongs to."
That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I do not belong to anyone. No person or curse. I was so sick of these people.
"Can you stop talking like I'm not here and tell me why I'm here, what's going on and what you want?" I asked them. They all looked over to me but Elijah was the only one who didn't roll his eyes.
"You're here, right at this moment, because I thought you were someone else and brought you here." Elijah said to me. Finally some answers.
"You do realize here is across the street from my house and my parents will find me in a second if they come looking." I said to him finally figuring out that little detail.
"Rebekah can you go tell her parents that she's working on a school project with you? Compel them if you have to." Ass-creep said from in front of me. Rebekah groaned and stomped out of the house.
"What's compel?" I asked curious.
"One question at a time goodness!" Klaus said. I looked at him confused. He was acting like a human, not like the monster last night. I briefly wondered again if these people had killed people before, then I shoved that thought away. Not something you want to think about while sitting next to them.
"I'm guessing compel is that mind control thing you did on me.'' I said ignoring his request. I'm not going to be polite, he kidnapped me AND stole my blood.
"Elijah you explain, I don't have the tolerance." Klaus said. With that he got up and left the house.
"Well he's not very patient." I said.
"He probably just doesn't want to lose his patience and kill you."
"That would suck." I said to him.
"You seem to be taking this pretty well." Elijah said walking over to me.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I said to him as he stood in front of me. I didn't want to tell him about the weird calm that had come over me. Wait, hadn't that lady told me to calm down? Maybe she used her powers.
I sighed confused and then looked up when Elijah started talking again. "But you aren't even that surprised that vampires exist." He stood in front of me and offered me his hand. "We could talk a little more civilized." He said and I grabbed it pulling myself up.
He led me into a room that I guessed was the kitchen because there was a table in it. Hmm, I didn't know there was any furniture in this house yet. Guess they want to make it presentable for any future buyers.
The windows in the room pointed to the back of this house so my family couldn't see them. Damn. I sat down in one of the chairs and Elijah sat across the table from me.
"Let's start at the beginning." Elijah said. I looked away from the walls I'd been staring at and over to him, "What is your name?"
"That's a great place to start. I'm Madeline Musicaro. Its spelled like Madeline but you say it like Madelyn. No one ever gets it right." I said. "Who are you? I know you're Elijah but what's your last name?"
"Elijah Mikalson. Rebekah and Klaus are my siblings. They can be a little ill tempered at times." He said.
"Hmp. Kinda guessed that."
"As vampires that's not a good thing."
"Let me guess. They hurt people. Bite them. Drink their blood." I said while leaning back in my chair remembering last night.
"As I said before, you seem to not be surprised that vampires exist that much. Why?" He asked me. Why is he asking all the questions? I'm the one who deserves the answers.
I decided that if I answered his questions he would probably answer mine in return. "Blame it on the Twilight craze I guess." Still not able to speak about the night before.
"My turn." I said as he opened his mouth to ask another question but shut it smiling when I said that. "What is going on? Why do you have me here?" I paused for a second. "Why were you talking about doppelgangers? Was my definition of compel correct?"
Elijah raised his eyebrows as if he were surprised by all my questions. "Well, the first question is a really long story. Do you have time?"
I motioned around me. "You're the one keeping me here."
"Fine. My family lived in Virginia around 1000 years ago when it obviously was not called that. I had 5 siblings, Niklaus, Rebekah, Kol, Finn and Henrick. In the town we lived in there were werewolves. "
Werewolves again, I guess I was right in saying they were real.
"Every full moon we would have to hide in tunnels underground to be protected from them. One full moon my brothers Niklaus and Henrick decided to stay above ground to watch the men turn into wolves. My brother Henrick was killed. Needless to say my family was devastated." He paused for a minute and looked as if he were reminiscing before returning to the story.
"My mother decided she could not lose any more family. She wanted us to be strong, powerful, invincible so we could not be killed. She was a very powerful witch and turned us into vampires. Yes?" He stopped with an amused expression on his face when I raised my hand.
"So there's such thing as werewolves and witches too?" I said. I was getting a headache from all this new information.
"Yes. Werewolves have a gene passed through their blood but it is only activated if they kill someone. Any more questions before I continue?" He said. I shook my head no.
"So, my mother turned us into vampires. And because we were the first vampires ever in the world, she didn't anticipate the bloodlust that would come along with it. We all killed just to get to the blood. I'm not proud of it." He added when he say the expression on my face. "When Niklaus first killed we discovered that he carried the gene of a werewolf. The next full moon he turned into one." He paused, it seemed for dramatic effect.
"So…" I said, "He's a werewolf and a vampire? I don't see what this has to do with me."
"My mother created a curse. It kept his werewolf side dormant. That way he was not more powerful than the rest of us. She created a doppleganger so the curse could be broken."
"So, he's looking for a doppleganger to break his curse?" I asked. "And you think it's me?"
"Not exactly." Elijah said shaking his head. "500 years ago he found the doppleganger. Her name is Katherine. She escaped him with the help of her friend Juliette who blamed me. You look exactly like Juliette."
"So if the doppleganger was created to break his curse and she escaped he wanted to break it with me because I'm someone else's doppleganger." I said still trying to piece everything together. My head was reeling. So apparently I look exactly like someone who lived 500 years ago?
"Klaus broke the curse about two years ago by killing a girl named Elena. She was Katherine's doppleganger." Elijah paused as if he was trying to figure out what to say next. "He wanted to make more like him after the curse was broken. More vampire-werewolf hybrids. But to make them they needed to drink the doppelganger's blood to turn to vampires."
"So that's why-" I said, wanting to talk about last night but again, I couldn't. I was finally getting it. "Klaus wanted to see if my blood worked like the other doppelgangers. But it didn't." I said figuring out a way to be able to say what I meant.
"Exactly. So now he wants to figure out why you are a doppleganger. Why do you exist if the doppleganger was created to end his curse?" Elijah asked me.
"Well I don't know! I'm still trying to get all this through my head." I said.
Elijah looked as if he were done talking because he leaned back in his chair when he had been leaning on the table before.
"Is Katherine a vampire?" I asked him.
"Yes." He sighed.
"Do you like her?" I said to him.
His head snapped over to me and he sat up straight in his chair. "Why would you say that?" He said harsher than before.
"Well Rebekah was talking about her before and something flashed in your eyes. Then you tried to change the subject off her." I said more timid than before.
Elijah looked around as if to check if his siblings were home. "Don't mention her again." He said looking back at me. "Do you understand?"
I nodded a little freaked out. "Can I go home?" I asked him.
A voice replied to me but it wasn't him. "Hmm. Should we let her go Elijah?"
I looked over to the doorway and saw that Klaus was speaking.
"Why not?" Elijah asked looking like he was trying too hard to look calm. "I think we've kept her long enough."
"Fine. Up you go." Klaus said to me. "Time to go home I'll walk you there."
I stood out of the chair and started walking to the door before Klaus stepped in front of me.
"You were right before about compulsion. It is mind control." He said and then looked right into my eyes. "Don't mention a word of this to anyone who asks. If they ask where you were, say you were studying with your friend Rebekah."
I sighed and he grabbed my arm. I flinched at his touch but it wasn't a hard grip. Suddenly there was a blur of colors and I was standing on my front porch. Klaus was nowhere to be seen.
"What have I gotten myself into?" I said before walking into the house.
