Chapter 6
An hour later I was sitting in my room getting ready for track again. How would I ever be able to focus with all that new information in my head?
I looked over at my wall and saw one of my hundreds of Harry Potter posters was falling off a little. I went over to my extremely messy desk to try to find some tape but to no avail. I decided to just leave it there and sat back down on my bed.
I was pulling on socks when I heard the doorbell ring. I could hear Rose walking to get the door so I didn't even bother standing up off my bed.
"Hello." I heard. I recognized the voice as Elijah's and my head snapped in the direction of the door to my room.
"Hi. Can I help you?" Rose said to him. I got off my bed and opened the door to my room. I looked out and saw Elijah outside on my doorstep because I could see the front door from my room. Why the hell was he here?
"I'm actually here to talk to Madeline." He said looking over to me and meeting my gaze. Hadn't we just talked? Why does he want to talk to me again?
Rose turned her head and looked over to me. I could tell I had a weird expression on my face by the way she looked at me.
She looked over to him with her mouth open to say something I never got to hear because Elijah interrupted. "Please invite me inside."
After pausing a moment Rose said, "Sure come in." Why would she just let him in like that? Then I remembered. Mind control, or compulsion as they called it.
He walked past her and she closed the door. I glared at him and he turned to Rose. "Forget that I'm here. Don't bother us for a while." Rose blinked with a very confused expression on her face and turned away. Elijah walked away from Rose and then right past me into my room.
I spun around and he was right behind me. He pulled me into my room closing and locking the door.
"What do you want?" I asked freaking out. Last time I was in my room with his brother he took my blood.
"I'm not going to hurt you." He said as if reading my mind. "I just want to talk where my brother and sister won't be likely to overhear."
"Why don't you want them to overhear?" I said calming down a little and walking more into the middle of my room instead of being pressed right against the door.
"You asked me if Katherine was a vampire earlier and I said yes. Then I overreacted to your other question. I wanted to say I'm sorry."
"Okay… thanks I guess." I said a little confused. "If you just wanted to say sorry why didn't you want your siblings to overhear?"
"I wanted to explain why I overreacted. When Katherine ran away 500 years ago she prevented Klaus from breaking his curse for all that time. He's held a grudge and tried to find her, to kill her, ever since." Elijah said to me.
"Then why did she run?" I asked in disbelief. "Couldn't she have just let him break the curse instead?"
Elijah shook his head at me and turned to look at the pictures on the top of my dresser. I was really glad I had put my clothes away beforehand so there wasn't anything on the floor.
Then while still looking at my pictures Elijah said something that horrified me, "The curse required the doppleganger to be killed, drained of blood, by Klaus."
He spun around when he heard my sharp intake of breath.
"So he had to kill the doppleganger to break his curse? If you find out if I have a curse attached to me will he kill me?" I said with my voice coming out freakishly high. My heart was beating unhealthily fast.
Elijah started to walk over to me making a calming motion with his hands. "Calm down Madeline. If you do have a curse attached to you, which I'm not saying you do, it probably won't affect Klaus and he'll leave."
What he said didn't calm me down though. I kept backing away from him until I ran into my bed and couldn't go any further. I was starting to get lightheaded from hyperventilating.
"Madeline." Elijah said still walking toward me. I stared at him openmouthed and he grabbed my wrists. "Calm down."
Him grabbing me just freaked me out more though. I tried to rip my hands out of his grip but he was freakishly strong. I looked up into his face to scream at him to let me go but when I looked into his eyes the pupils dilated.
"Madeline you need to calm down." He said. The same calm as earlier came over me. I stopped fighting against him and I felt my breathing evening out. He released my wrists and backed away from me.
"You need to learn how to control your fears. One of these days you may pass out." He said to me.
"Sorry." I said back. I was actually glad he had used his mind control to calm me down. I felt so much better.
"Can we get back to what we were talking about before I freaked out?" I said.
"As I said before, your curse probably has nothing to do with Klaus so he won't care." Elijah said to me. Not smart, seeing as he had just had to force me to calm down.
"My curse? So you're saying I have one?" I asked him starting to freak out again.
"Calm down." Elijah said. "I'm not saying that you have a curse. What I'm saying is that even if you do Klaus will have little interest."
"How are you going to figure out if I have a curse?" I asked him trying to not freak out again.
"My brother has some friends who could help him figure it out. He's actually going to go and get their help right now." Elijah said.
"Change of subject, why are you here again?" I said while sitting down on my bed.
"I came to tell you why I overreacted to your question earlier. I don't want my brother and sister to go looking for Katherine because they will kill her. I don't want her to be killed." Elijah said to me.
"So I was right! You do like her." I said rejoicing in my right-ness. I am physic.
"You cannot mention her again." He said ignoring me making me know I was completely right. "My brother and sister will probably be here a while trying to find out what your curse is. That will give Katherine a chance to disappear."
"Okay, so I can't mention Katherine. Got it." I said giving him a thumbs up. He rolled his eyes.
"Thank you Madeline." He said starting toward the door of my room. Before he opened the door he said, "Don't worry about your curse. I'm going to call a friend who can help protect you from my brother just in case."
So he just says that I'll need protecting from his brother? That's nice. I thought he had tried to get me to believe that I didn't have a curse.
"Wait!" I almost yelled at him. He turned around looking at me surprised.
"Am I going to turn into a vampire? Your brother bit my neck last night."
Elijah let out a scoffing noise and shook his head. "I can't believe he actually did that. No you won't turn into a vampire. To turn into one you have to die with vampire blood in your system and then drink human blood when you come back to life."
"What? Eww." I said thinking of blood. Then again, I had drank ass-creep's blood last night.
"Don't worry, you'll never have to go through that."
With that he left, leaving me with a feeling of anxiety. I kept my breathing calm and went back to getting ready for practice.
