Chapter 10- Sunday EARLY morning
2 hours later I was standing right next to the window in my room. I held the deed to my house in my hands, which I had found stashed with us children's birth certificates.
Rose was asleep in my bed so I wanted to make Caroline enter as quietly as possible. My parents would murder me if they found out I had someone sneak into my room.
The window I was standing next to suddenly shot opened. Thank God she had opened it quietly. I quickly placed a finger to my lips as she scrambled in. After she was in she reached outside and helped a dazed looking women in.
Once they were in my room I closed my window and locked it while looking over to make sure Rose was still asleep. She was, and she was drooling on MY pillow.
I quickly glared at her and then pointed down the hall to my left. Caroline walked down the hallway and the lady followed at her heels. She stood in front of Charlie's door and waited for me to open it before going in.
I walked over to Rose's bed where Charlie was sprawled out completely. I motioned behind me for Caroline to close the door and I heard it snap shut.
"Charlie." I said shaking him a little. He groaned and hit me in the arm.
"Ow! Charlie wake up!" I whispered. He groaned again and opened his eyes a little.
"What time is it Maddy?" He said with his eyes still half closed.
"It's like 2 am or something. I need your help." I said cutting right to the point. I really hoped he would help us. I didn't want Caroline to have to compel him.
"Can't it wait till morning?" He asked.
"No. It can't." Caroline said stepping forward. I made an, 'are you kidding me?' look at Caroline. Charlie didn't even know who she was! Now she was just stepping up, he would probably tell on me.
"Who are you?" He said his eyes snapping opened. He looked over at me accusingly and I shrugged. He got up off the bed and stood beside me.
"Caroline can you explain?" I asked her. I didn't know if she wanted me to tell a story to him or the truth. It was probably better if she did it.
"Well Charlie, straight to the point, someone wants to kill Maddy and I need your help protecting her." Caroline said. I stared at her open-mouthed; did she know what she had just done? Charlie was going to completely freak out!
Charlie didn't really freak out as much as I thought he would have. "What are you talking about?" He growled and then pulled me closer to him by my arm. I was really confused, he usually would have freaked out. What was up with him lately?
As I tried to pull my arm from his grasp Caroline kept talking, "Okay it's a really long story so I'm going to cut it short for you. Vampires exist. This really old vampire named Klaus knew this girl in the 1400's named Juliet who happened to look exactly like Madeline. Turns out, Madeline's her doppleganger and her blood will break some curse. Klaus doesn't want that curse to be broken so he wants to kill Maddy." Again she talked with only one breath. Must be a vampire perk.
Charlie was not as shocked as I thought he would have been at hearing this. All he did was pull me closer to his side. "Klaus wants to kill Maddy?" He asked. He didn't even seem at all surprised at what Caroline had said.
"Why aren't you surprised about vampires?" Caroline asked. The confusion on her face was exactly what I felt.
"I study folklore. One day I figured out that it wasn't fiction. It doesn't matter; you said Klaus wanted to kill Maddy. How can I help?" Charlie replied finally letting go of my arm.
Caroline seemed to regain her composure and went right along with getting Charlie to do what she wanted. I however stood there open-mouthed as she told him about signing the deed over to him.
As the lawyer lady and him took a billion hours to do what ever I just stood there completely confused. So Charlie studied folklore, which explains how he knew about vervain. How had he figured out that everything was real though?
At like two in the morning it was too early for me to try and figure this out. "I'm going to bed." I announced. It seemed like Charlie and Caroline were fine right now.
"Yeah Maddy, go and get some sleep." Charlie said standing up from Rose's desk where he'd been signing stuff. He gave me a kiss on the forehead and smiled down at me. "Don't worry Maddy. Nothing's going to happen to you. Night."
"Goodnight." I said back before walking to my room for some much needed rest.
O
"I still don't see why we have to do this." Rebekah said looking over at Elijah. They had just worked the last ten minutes on breaking Klaus' neck. It had taken both of their strength combined to do it.
"Because, that girl Madeline deserves to live her life. Klaus only wants to kill her because, if the werewolves find her and if he finds the cure for Elena, his sire bond won't work. The werewolves probably won't even find Katie anyway; it's not a well-known curse." Elijah said walking toward the chair near the side of the room.
"Well if it isn't well known how do you know about it?" Rebekah asked sitting in the chair besides his.
"Remember how Niklaus and I 'created' the curse of the sun and the moon?" Elijah asked and Rebekah nodded, "Well, we didn't really create it. I had heard about the curse of the moon from the werewolves in our village many years beforehand. When Niklaus asked me to help him make up a curse I just added to that one."
Elijah looked over at Klaus' body and Rebekah followed his gaze. "So what exactly is this curse of the moon?" She asked.
"Well now, because we mixed in our sun and moon curse legend, many don't even know. But I do, all it does is unbind the werewolves from the moon. But to do it there needs to be a sacrifice, Maddy." He said.
"And you want to save her life so you brought in Caroline." Rebekah said while rolling her eyes.
"I figured she was the closet connection we had to Niklaus' humanity. I hoped he would listen to her."
"You could have let Caroline talk to him before we broke his neck all those times." Rebekah said accusingly to Elijah.
"She wasn't even here when he found out. You know how he reacted when he did. All he wanted to do was kill Maddy. I couldn't let him."
"She's just one human. You've killed thousands of human's in your lifetime. Maybe even hundreds of thousands. Why can't you just let Nik kill her and we can all move on with our lives?" Rebekah asked exasperated.
"She's just one human with a life and a family and friends. How would you feel if someone killed your precious Matt?"
"Point taken." Rebekah said and walked away from Elijah. "Call me if you need help snapping his neck again."
O- Sunday morning
At about nine the next morning my family was all dressed up for Easter Mass. Rose, Hannah and I were all wearing the same coral colored dresses that our grandma had bought us. I really didn't want to leave the house. I was freaked out thinking about Klaus wanting to kill me.
When everyone was walking outside to get in the car, I pulled Charlie aside.
"Charlie, I don't want to leave. What if he finds me?" I said with a slight quiver in my voice.
"Maddy don't worry. Caroline told me last night that Klaus' siblings are keeping him in that house across the street until they can talk some sense into him."
I looked up at him in disbelief; did he know how stupid that sounded?
"Okay Charlie, two things, A) is the house across the street really the safest place for him to be? And two, talking some sense into a thousand year old vampire. Does that sound like it is going to work out?" I said raising my eyebrows at him. I wish I could raise one eyebrow that would be much cooler.
"Maddy, just trust them. We have to go." He said pointing at the car everyone was already sitting in.
"Okay another thing, why do you trust her? Why do you trust his siblings? I sure don't. They're vampires, I'm pretty sure they can't be trusted." I said speaking all the things I had been holding in.
"I think that we can trust them because," He said before he was interrupted by a car horn. We looked out the kitchen window and saw Rose was in the driver seat laying on the horn. Charlie made a motion for them to leave. "We can trust Caroline at least because she helped us to sigh the deed over. Now she can't even get into the house without me inviting her."
"One more thing-" I said before he cut me off.
"Ask me in the car, we're going to be late." He pushed by me and walked outside. I followed slowly behind him. It seemed really stupid but I felt like Klaus would just swoop down from somewhere and kill me. I placed one foot outside and then the other looking all around me the whole time.
"See, he's not out Maddy, you'll be fine." Charlie said going over to unlock his car.
When we got inside he turned over to me and handed me one of the necklaces from my jewelry shelf. "Here, I put vervain inside it. If you wear this vampires can't compel you."
"Thanks.'' I said a little shocked taking it and putting it on.
We rode the 5-minute car ride in silence. It was just when we had parked that I remembered I wanted to ask Charlie how he knew all of this.
"Charlie," I began, "How do you-" I had started to ask but when I looked over at him he shook his head at me.
"Later." He said and got out of the car. I sighed and pounded my head on the window before I followed him out.
O
"I gave him some vervain to put in one of her necklaces and I also soaked that ring she always wears in some. I told her about it yesterday because it seemed to have slipped your mind when you explained everything to her." Caroline said lecturing to Elijah while he sat near Klaus' body. "And when I say everything I mean some things. How could you not tell her everything? Isn't that best if we want to keep her alive?"
"There wasn't a good time for everything." The older vampire said to Caroline annoyed.
Just then Klaus stirred a little on the ground and both the vampires' attention snapped to him.
"Rebekah!'' Elijah called out.
She came walking down the stairs and looked at Klaus' now twitching body.
"Do you want to break his neck again?'' She asked sounding bored.
"No," Elijah said, "I want to try to talk to him. I'll just need your help to grab him if he tries to get away."
Rebekah positioned herself next to Klaus and Elijah stood in front of him. Elijah turned Klaus with his foot so that he was lying on his back.
When Klaus turned over he was glaring up at Elijah. "Feel free to break my neck all you want big brother. It will only prolong the inevitable."
"Klaus." Caroline said.
His eyelids flickered a little when he heard Caroline talk then looked over at her surprised.
"Caroline. What are you doing here?" He said.
Elijah stepped back and Caroline stepped into place where he'd been standing. Klaus tried to sit up a little but his arms didn't support his weight and he fell back on the ground.
"What did you do to me Elijah?" He said.
"We broke your neck a few times and pumped vervain through your system. It will be out of your system soon I'm guessing." Elijah said from behind him.
"Klaus." Caroline said again turning the attention back to her. ''You can't hurt Madeline."
"On the contrary love, I can hurt her but I don't plan to. I'll make her death as quick and simple as I can." With saying that Klaus jumped up and tried to speed out of the room. Elijah and Rebekah were right on his trail though. Within seconds they were on top of him trying to break his neck again.
Finally there was an echoing snap in the room.
"You really meant it when you said the vervain would be out soon didn't you?" Rebekah said glaring at Elijah.
O
After church all the 'kids' of my family including Charlie and Sam, drove in my aunt's car back to my grandma's house. There were only seven seats in her car so Charlie drove and everyone else sat wherever they could. Not very safe. I know.
Once we got to the house we opened our Easter baskets. I was perfectly happy staying inside while my cousins all went on a walk. It just seemed safer in the house in case Klaus did get out.
While I was sitting alone on the couch, Caroline texted me. In the message Caroline said that they hadn't made any progress with convincing Klaus not to kill me. That really hadn't made me feel any better so I put my phone away for a while and just watched TV.
When all my cousins came back from their walk I checked my phone again just to see the time. I saw that it was like 1 and I also had a text from Caroline. When I opened it I saw that she had said they had snapped Klaus' neck twice since she had last texted me. That had made me feel much better.
Like the democracy my family is, we decided to take a vote on if the whole family should go to the park to watch Hannah's Easter egg hunt by raising our hands. Feeling better since Caroline's text I voted yes.
After our raised hands were counted it was decided, we were going to the park.
On the drive there it was even safer than our drive back from church. The entire ride my family was screaming camp songs.
It was mostly that one where someone shouts, "My name's Maddy I'm a star! Come with me I'll take you far!" Then everyone else goes, "Oh! She thinks she's bad!" Then I go, "Actually I know I'm bad! Katherine please!" And then the person whose name you said has to do it. After I went it was my cousin Kathy's turn.
As I said, we are very, very safe. It was not distracting for the driver at all.
But after screaming out Katherine, even though it was my cousin's name, I didn't feel that safe. Saying Katherine made me remember the Katherine that Elijah loved and that made me remember Elijah and that made me remember Klaus and that made me scared a little.
Just to make myself feel better I sent another text to Caroline asking if he was still down. When she said yes I felt better and joined my cousins back at singing.
When we got to the park Hannah ran off to do the Easter egg hunt and all us old kids went on the swing set. We had a contest to see who could swing the highest and my cousin Kathy won, of course. She's like the most athletic of all of us.
I know I probably should have been a little worried at least about Klaus but I was having too much fun with my family. I completely forgot about him. I think Charlie was nervous though. He kept looking over at me with a worried expression on his face. I didn't care though.
Once Hannah had finished her Easter egg hunt she came to play with us. We were on that spinney merry go round thingy. All the girls, but me, were piled on it. Charlie, Nick, Mark and I were ready to run and push it around. Once we were just about to start running I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned around.
There was some guy behind me. He looked about 30 but seriously buff. He looked to be at least 6 feet tall. "Can my nephew ride with you?" He asked pointing to a little kid at his side who looked about 5.
"Sure." I said. "Just so you're warned, we'll probably be going really fast." The man nodded his head and then he patted the small boy on the back. He ran forward and sat on the carousal or whatever it is called.
I turned back to the thing to try to push it again but the man grabbed me by the elbow and turned me around completely freaking me out. I guess he didn't even realize how creepy he looked when he was starring directly into my eyes as if he had just won a million dollars.
"You have very interesting eyes." He said. I heard laughing children and running behind me so I guessed they had started the ride without me.
"Thanks?" I said to him not really sure how to respond. I had always liked my eyes anyway. They were a lightish green and then around the pupil there was a gold ring and black flecks.
I pulled my arm out of his grip and he let go. I then decided to back away from him a little slowly.
"Is that your real eye color or are you wearing contacts?" He asked me. I had no idea why he was asking such weird questions. I decided to answer truthfully though, "They're my real eyes."
"What's your name?" He asked.
"Madeline." I said walking back a little more. I mentally hit myself after saying that. Why had I told him my name?
Suddenly from behind me I heard my cousin Nick yelling for me to come over and help them. When I turned to look back at them I saw that the man who had been talking to me was over at the thing pulling his nephew away by the arm.
I groaned and started walking toward my family. Why do I attract all the weird people?
So Maddy and her family spent a lot of time together in this chapter. I just wanted to show you how close they all are for upcoming…... things…
