I wake with a start, sitting up with wide eyes. Dark, cold eyes, faces hidden in the shadow of a cloak. I open my curtains slowly to see the girls still sleeping. I breath a sigh of relief, jumping violently when Hermione opens her curtains.

She smiles widely, and I look over her. She's already dressed in her uniform. A book lays across her lap. I stare at her for a minute before laughing and shaking my head.

"Only you would be up this early, dressed and reading, Hermione," I say standing and stretching.

"Good morning to you, too, Vanissa."

I smile at her as I leave to take a quick shower in the adjoined bathroom. I let the water take away the tenseness and fear that still lingers from the strange dream.

I quickly change into my uniform and walk out, brushing my hair to try to tame my wild curls. I sigh after a bit, though, and toss my hairbrush onto my nightstand. Hermione watches me with an amused smile.

"I don't know why I try. It's useless."

"I think it looks good, though."

"Yeah, just like my mother..."

She frowns slightly.

"There's nothing wrong with that. Your mother was a very beautiful woman."

"Yeah, and a murderer," Lavender Brown says, glaring slightly at me.

"Not to mention a Death Eater," Pavarti Patil adds, walking past.

I sigh, looking at Lavender.

"Look, I'm not my mother. I'm not even in Slytherin like she was."

"Obviously the Sorting Hat got it wrong," she says, walking to the bathroom.

I look at Hermione, who smiles sympathetically and stands, her bag on her shoulder.

"Let's just go to class. We have Transfiguration first! Aren't you excited?"

"Not near as much as you, it seems," I say, laughing slightly a I put my books in my bag and start walking with her.

I ignore the many, and I mean many stares and glares shot my way, instead, smiling as Hermione babbles on about her life.

"So, what's it like to grow up in a muggle home?"

"Oh, it's nothing like Hogwarts. My parents are dentists."

"Dentists?"

"They work on people's teeth."

"They put their hands in people's mouths?"

"Yes," she says, smiling.

"That's... Huh, that's interesting."

"You think so? Well, that's refreshing. They were so proud of me. Granted, they were very shocked. Honestly, I thought it was a joke at first, but then I was just amazed and excited. Thin about it, a whole new school with a whole new kinds of subjects! I was so excited to come and learn everything I could. Although, they don't really approve of using magic for quick fixes. Like, my teeth, for example. They used braces."

"Pause. What are braces?"

"They're metal wires attached to your teeth to straighten them."

I give her an odd look before shaking my head.

"Muggles sure are odd. Metal willingly in your mouth?"

"Well, they don't have spells to fix things like that."

"Those poor souls."

She laughs slightly.

"Anyway, they came with me to Diagon Alley and help me buy my things for school. They were a bit confused by the currency at first, but they've got it down, now, of course. I think my favorite thing to shop for was my wand, though. It's vine wood, you know, with dragon heart-string core. What's yours?"

I look down at it for a moment, smiling.

"It's Hawthorn with a phoenix feather."

"Phoenix feather? That's rare! I've read about the properties of a wand of course. Take mine for example, Vine wood is a rather flexible wood and tends to be erratic. The flexibility, of course, makes it a pretty average wood to master. Then, the dragon heart-string is the best for sheer power. It's the most common core, of course."

"Well, all-knowing Hermione, what about mine?"

She gives me a mock glare at the nickname before smiling widely at the chance to portray her knowledge.

"Well, with Hawthorn is excellent for Defense against the Dark Arts. It's suited particularly well for healing magic, but also adept at curses. It is, however, not easy to master. As for the pheonix feather, like I said, it's rare. It's capable of the greatest range of magic. They also show the most initiative, often acting of their own accord."

"What?" I say, looking down at my wand, "Behave."

She chuckles slightly.

"Anyway, as I was saying, They're also the pickiest when choosing owners."

"Well, if it is so picky and chose me anyway, then it should be have and not act on it's own accord."

She chuckles again as we walk into the Transfiguration classroom. I smile, letting her pull me to on of the paired tables in the front row. I sit next to her, watching as she immediately takes out parchment to take notes. After the rest of the class files in, she stands and looks around.

"Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned."

After taking a lot of rather complicated notes, we're each given a match to turn into a needle. I look down at it silently for a moment, and Hermione glances at me.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm thinking of the best way to do this."

"Follow the notes. Here, look."

I watch as she mutters the spell given to us. Her match turns silver and pointy, but it's still a match.

"Aright, future Dumbledore, I can try that," I say, smiling as she shakes her head with a smile.

I repeat what Hermione did, but my match only turns shiny. It isn't silver, and it's not pointy. It's just shiny. Hermione looks over and smiles.

"See? That wasn't so hard, was it?"

"Put ours together, and we did it," I say, smiling slightly and putting them side by side.

True enough, they were opposite progressed. Mine shined in light, but wasn't the shape or color. Hers had the color and point, but didn't glint in the light like metal does. At the end of the class, McGonagall shows our two matches to the class, making my face turn pink. Just what I need, more attention.

Then came the class I was looking forward to, Defense Against the Dark Arts. However, I was very disappointed. The classroom smelled horridly of garlic, and the lesson itself was a joke.

And that's that! First day at Hogwarts, nad her peers are already judging... Sounds like a long year, eh? Maybe, maybe not. All depends, all depends!

Until next time, my pretties!
