A few minutes earlier…
Shawn led Katy to his room, anxious about what was going to take place. When they got there, he held the door open for her and she walked in, quietly murmuring a thank you. He followed behind her and then closed the door.
"So, what's up?" he asked her.
Katy had walked to the other side of the room and then turned around, unsure whether she should sit or stand.
"I just…wanted to…talk to you about something," she began.
"Yeah," Shawn chuckled. "I kind of figured that, you know, when you said you wanted to talk to me out there," he said, pointing to the door.
"Right," Katy said with a nervous laugh. "Look, I'm not really sure how to go about this, so I'll just outright say it."
"Okay, shoot," he said.
"I want to get to know you better," she said nervously.
"Okay?" he said, questioning why she was so nervous. He began to relax a little at knowing what the conversation was about, but his heart skipped a beat when he heard her say that. Did she mean as friends? Or…?
"Yeah, I know, that's not really worthy of coming to a separate room to discuss."
"Then why did you?" he asked, confused.
"I don't know," she said, looking down and walking around the room.
He followed her with his eyes as he stood with his back facing the door. "There must have been a reason you wanted to say that in private rather than in front of everyone."
"I'm just not all that great at this stuff," she said awkwardly.
"This stuff?"
"You know," she said, holding her hands out. "Talking to people about personal stuff."
He saw how nervous she was, and he almost started to enjoy watching her stumble over her words. He decided to play along. "How is this personal?" he asked.
She sighed and then said, "Because I know that Maya likes you a lot and I figure I should get to know you."
"Why does it matter if Maya likes me?"
"Because…I do too, alright?"
Inside, Shawn was freaking out. He didn't know how, but somehow he kept his composure.
"I just want to find out if what I think is correct," she continued. "Are you actually a stayer, Shawn? Because that job of yours makes it awfully hard."
"Yes, I'm a stayer, Katy," he said, walking over to her. "This job of mine makes it so that I can write for a living, and I love it for that. I try to accept assignments in places where I can visit people. And it's not all of my time. I mean, it's a lot of my time, but not all of it. And take the Matthews, for instance. I've known Cory my whole life and we're still friends. I'm a stayer."
"That's good news," she said with a small smile.
"So you want to get to know me better?" he asked.
"Yeah. And I want the same for you and Maya."
"Good," he said. "Because I agree. I'd really like to get to know you, too, Katy."
Now it was Katy's turn to freak out inside. She didn't know that he actually thought that. After all those years of working and worrying about how she and Maya were going to get by, she never had time for feeling like this. But now that it was here, she couldn't believe it had been so long. She wanted to talk to this man and learn things about him that he didn't tell other people. She wanted to be a special person to him, someone he could go to for anything.
"Well, that's lucky," she said, unable to keep her smile from spreading across her face.
"Yeah, it is," Shawn said, smiling. "So how about this: if you go and get Maya right now, we can all go do something together. What do you say?"
"Okay," she said.
"Great," he replied.
They both then stood awkwardly, unsure of how to proceed.
Shawn's mind was racing. He was thinking about how brave she was to make the first move like this, to put her feelings out there. She was very shy about it, but she'd acted before he did. He didn't even know that she cared about him at all, and this was a great surprise. He had started this party scared about what would happen between him and Angela, but now that wasn't even a thought in his mind. All he could think about was that for the first time in a long time, he had the possibility of starting a good relationship with someone. He cared deeply for her daughter, and he had a special feeling about Katy too.
All those thoughts raced through Shawn's mind over a period of a few seconds. Then Katy realized she should probably be the first to move, as she had to go get Maya. She walked to the door and opened it. She looked back to see him watching her go. He had a small smile on his face, and it made her heart jump. She hadn't seen anyone look at her like that for a long time.
Shawn then walked out of the room to go to the living room. He was excited, but he knew he had to have a normal expression or he'd be pressed for answers from Cory. He stopped before he got to the living room and regained his composure.
He took a deep breath and walked into the living room to see Cory and Topanga kissing on the couch. He chuckled silently to himself and then looked down. He'd always hoped that someday he'd have someone that he could love that much. That he'd be able to enjoy simple moments like that, with his wife kissing him on the couch.
He looked up and noticed they were still kissing. Of course, he thought. It's Cory and Topanga. I'm surprised they've held out this long. He chuckled again. Alright, I've given them enough time to notice I'm here.
"Ahem," Shawn said from the doorway. Cory and Topanga nearly jumped as they turned around to see Shawn. Topanga smiled and Cory looked like he'd been caught stealing a cookie out of the cookie jar.
"Yeah, I'm the one that's in danger of making out on the couch," he said, chuckling.
"Shawn, you ruined a perfect moment!" Cory said. Shawn could hear the frustration in his voice, and he knew how irritated he was with him.
"And it's my couch! I can do what I want!"
"Yes, it is," Topanga said, leaning to kiss him again. She stood up and was obviously waiting for Cory, but he sat there, stubborn as ever, wanting everything to go back to the way it was 30 seconds ago.
Then she turned around, leaned down, and said, "Hey. You'll get your moment back eventually."
Shawn silently chuckled again. They're so in love, he thought. He hates going five minutes without kissing her. Now wonder they're having another baby…
"You hear that?" Cory said to Shawn. "Eventually. That means in a long time. Thanks, Shawn!" he said sarcastically.
Example A, Shawn thought.
"So what did you guys talk about?" Topanga asked.
Uh, oh. Here comes the questions.
Cory asked, "Wait, where's Katy?"
"Oh, she's getting Maya," Shawn said.
"Shawnie, what happened?!" Cory cried, jumping off of the couch and quickly walking over to Shawn.
"Well, she's-"
"Oh, nobody knows how to do anything!" he complained.
"What are you talking about?" Topanga said, grabbing Cory's shoulders and putting her chin by his neck.
"Oh, Shawn likes Katy."
"Cory!" Shawn exclaimed, looking around to make sure nobody heard. "Did I not tell you to keep it between us?!"
"Oh, she's my wife. How could you expect me not to tell her? I have to do what she says," Cory said, shrugging it off.
Topanga kissed his cheek and grinned. She'd trained him well.
Shawn scoffed. He knew they were married, and he should have expected that from Cory. The days were long gone when he could keep his secrets between only him and Cory.
Shawn looked at them, realizing he'd been thinking in his own little zone for a few moments, and saw Topanga biting Cory's ear. He was grinning and holding her hands around his waist.
The ear thing. Ugh. Disturbing, he thought, closing his eyes and shaking his head.
"Hey, I'm still here!" he said.
Topanga looked up. "Sorry," she said, grinning sheepishly.
"Gosh, you guys can't control yourselves for five minutes," he mumbled jokingly.
Cory and Topanga laughed.
"So where is Katy?" Cory asked.
Just then, Katy, Maya, and Riley walked out of the hallway. Katy led the group and then went to stand next to Shawn. Maya and Riley were grinning at each other and practically skipping with joy, filing in line behind Katy.
Cory looked at Riley and slightly lifted his eyebrows in question about what happened.
Riley grinned and lifted her eyebrows back at her father as if to say, "It's great!"
Shawn noticed Cory's slight eyebrow lift, and he narrowed his eyes at Cory. Cory saw, and he simply shrugged, acting completely unaware of any suspicious activity.
"Katy and Maya and I are going to go get something to eat if that's okay," Shawn said, still narrowing his eyes at Cory.
"Oh," Cory said cheerily. "That's great! Have fun!" he said. He went over to the door and grabbed each of their coats and distributed them. "Now go!"
Shawn walked over to the door and opened it, holding it for the girls. Katy and Maya then walked out of the door, Maya still grinning ear to ear. Shawn signaled to Cory that he was watching him, pointing his fingers at his eyes and then at Cory. He shut the door behind them and off they went.
Cory turned to Topanga and Riley and exclaimed, "Yes," pumping his fist in the air.
