Tessa's body was found in Sophie and Lindy's apartment the evening after Lindy's fight with Tommy. Connor and Sophie had been out at the club. Lindy had been at Jake's trying to convince him the kiss he witnessed didn't mean anything.
Like Ben, Tessa was tied to a chair and her throat had been cut. The word "imposter" was spelled out in her blood on the floor in front of her body. Sophia had been the one to find her. Terrified and devastated, she called 911 and then Lindy.
…..
By the time Lindy arrived at the apartment, it was swarming with cops. Crime Scene investigators, uniformed officers and, of course, the Cyber Crimes unit.
Tommy didn't dare approach Lindy. So, Yaeger came over to speak with her and Sophia, who was bawling in Lindy's arms.
"Do you both have a place to stay?" Yaeger asked and then went on to explain "it's likely going to take the CSI guys a couple of days to collect everything they need and release your apartment as a crime scene."
"Sophia can stay with me," Connor piped in, making it clear that Lindy (and her murdering stalker) were not invited.
"Let me call Jake. I'm sure I could stay there," Lindy replied.
Unintentionally eavesdropping from across the small apartment, Tommy flinched at the thought of her in someone else's arms… and their bed.
"Good," Yaeger said. "Let me know once you are both settled. I want a protective detail on you both until we catch this guy."
"It's a bit weird, isn't it?" Jake asked, nodding his head towards the closed front door of his apartment.
"What? Having someone sitting outside your door around the clock? What's weird about that? Who needs privacy?" Lindy joked.
"You're right. I can't think of a better way to start a relationship," Jake teased back.
"I am really sorry about this. I can't imagine what you must think of me after all this," Lindy said shifting the conversation to a more serious tone.
"I think you are amazing," Jake said sincerely, leaning in to kiss her.
Lindy returned his kiss, wrapping her arms around his neck. Involuntarily, her subconscious compared this kiss with her last one. Over the last few days, she had tried everything she could to block out any thoughts of Tommy, including their kiss. But, as soon as her lips touched Jake's, it all came flooding back.
Tommy had been so gentle, so tentative… right up to the moment he kissed her. The kiss had been so passionate. She hadn't expected to respond to him the way she did. The taste of wine on his lips. His rough stubble against her smooth skin. How softly his fingers had rested on her neck.
Sure, she cared about Tommy. Yes, she found him attractive, but what woman with a pulse wouldn't. But, in that moment, she had wanted him. All of him.
It had taken every ounce of self-control to pull away from Tommy. If the rest of the night hadn't gone the way it did… who knows what would have happened.
Lindy pulled away from Jake. "Sorry, I just need a second," she said apologetically, as she backed away towards the bathroom.
She closed the bathroom door and turned on the tap. She tried to reason with her reflection. "Come on, Lindy… Tommy is an asshole and you can't trust him. Don't waste any more time thinking about him," she instructed herself.
Reassured, she walked back into Jake's tidy, stylish living room. Jake was sitting in the middle of his grey sectional couch. As she approached, he glanced up at her with a questioning look. "Everything oka…" he started to say, but she didn't let him finish.
She crashed down on his lips, straddling him on the couch. He placed his hands on her hips, pulling her closer into him. She whispered into his ear, "I'm ready for bed, you?"
She could feel him smile as he kissed her neck. He didn't respond, but simply wrapped his hands under her legs, stood up and carried her to the bedroom.
Sgt. Walker knew how Lindy felt about Tommy, so she didn't dare put him on the protective detail at the door. But, she also knew she wasn't going to be able to keep him chained to a desk either. "You can watch the perimeter. God help you if she sees you," Walker had warned with half a smile.
Tommy sat in the squad car his eyes transfixed on the three street-facing windows of Jake's apartment. The lights were on, making it possible to see in from the outside. However, from this angle, Tommy couldn't see much. Part of the kitchen. A corner of the living room. The entrance to Jake's bedroom. "Probably for the best," he reasoned with himself, taking a gulp of coffee.
Det. Pascale was watching Jake's apartment door and had checked in about 20 minutes ago. She confirmed that Lindy had arrived at the apartment and that they were both safe and sound inside.
Tommy rubbed his eyes and started to get himself settled in for a long night. Since becoming a cop, he couldn't count how many nights he had spent like this… in the car, waiting for something to happen, praying nothing does.
He took another sip of his coffee, looked back up at the lit windows, and then he saw them.
Jake walked out of the living room with Lindy's legs wrapped around his waist. He was kissing her neck as he walked. He carried her into his bedroom … and, just like that, they were out of view again.
Tommy took a deep breath, shaking his head as he let it out. He wasn't sure that he ever really had a chance … but he definitely didn't now.
He spent the next hour trying to escape his powerful imagination that continued to conjure up images of Lindy with Jake. The fact that Tommy could practically still feel Lindy's smooth skin and soft lips, from their encounter only a few days ago, didn't help.
Then his eyes caught a shadow on the fire escape. Without looking away from it, he grabbed his gun and pressed down the button on his radio. "Pascale … I think there might be someone on the fire escape," he said, waiting for a reply.
"Calligan, 10-4. I'll go…" Det. Pascale started to reply and then her radio went dead.
"Pascale?! Are you there? Are you okay?" Tommy frantically yelled into his radio, running towards the entrance of the building.
Tommy sprinted up the stairs. Found Det. Pascale knocked out on the floor. It looked like the door to Jake's apartment had been tampered with, but it was still closed.
Tommy pounded on the door. "Lindy!" he yelled. "Are you okay in there?"
Seconds later, Tommy heard the deadbolt unlock. "What the fuck are you doing here?" Lindy asked the venom dripping from her voice as she slowly opened the door. The tension in her voice dropped when she saw the detective on the floor.
"I'm sorry. I know that you don't want me here," Tommy said softly. "But there is something going on. I don't know what, but you aren't safe here. I was watching the perimeter when I thought I saw something on the fire escape. Pascale was about to check it out when she was attacked. Did you not hear anything inside?"
"No. We were a little distracted, I guess," Lindy responded awkwardly. "Is she going to be okay?"
Tommy took his first real look at Lindy. Her hair was tussled and her lips were swollen. She was wrapped in a bed sheet. Didn't look like his imagination had been too far off.
Tommy swallowed hard and responded. "She's unconscious, but I think she'll be fine. They are sending an ambulance now." As he spoke, Jake came and stood behind Lindy. Jake slid a hand on her bare shoulder protectively and glared at Tommy.
Tommy looked back at Lindy. "You aren't safe here. Pack your things. Please, Lindy."
The look in her eyes terrified him. She really didn't trust him anymore. Not even a little bit. "I'll take my chances," she said as she closed the door.
