Rose had gone back to steerage running into Tommy and Fabrizio along the way, and locked herself in her room before they could ask any questions. They both knocked on her door, asking if they could come in, but she just stayed still on her bed. She didn't know why she was so disappointed, Jack was a taken man. She saw Jack was unhappy with Catherine, but knew that only he could save himself. Still, feelings of hurt and sadness surfaced as she allowed herself to cry into her hands.
Before Jack's group was to go to luncheon, Nathan Hockley pulled Jack aside and took him to their stateroom. He led Jack to a safe and turned the dial to the unlock code. The door squeaked open and Nathan was holding a black box. "I was going to save this for after the engagement gala, but I think that it'd be a good idea for you to present this to Catherine now." He pried the lid open to reveal a stunning necklace, with a heart shaped blue diamond surrounded by smaller white diamonds on a thick silver chain. It looked like a glorified dog collar thought Jack, who felt that he might as well be the one wearing it with the way Catherine treated him. "As a way to move on from all of this mess that Mrs. Brown caused with that third class girl" continued Nathan with a tone of annoyance. Jack looked at it with a mix of astonishment and fear, as Nathan awaited his response.
"It's overwhelming" said Jack.
"It's for royalty. And our crowd is royalty Jack."
Nathan snapped the box shut and put it back into the safe. At that moment Jack would have given anything to be common.
Jack and Nathan met up with their tour group that had arrived back at the dining saloon for lunch. They met a few acquaintances and joined tables with a few familiar faces amongst their rich clan. Catherine and Ruth chatted animatedly with the other women as they discussed the wedding. The men were talking about John Jacob Astor's business; he was the richest man on the ship. Jack sat as frozen as a porcelain doll, feeling empty. He felt emasculated by Catherine's behaviour, and embarrassed that he could hold no control over anything in his life at present.
When he was with Rose, he didn't feel the need to think about what to say or to mind his actions. It felt natural and right. He felt alive and that his life had a purpose other than to save his mother from debt. He purposefully grabbed his glass of brandy and spilled it down his front. He excused himself to change; nobody even noticed he was gone.
The winds were picking up as the Titanic sailed across the vast sea, the sky a cloudy blue but heading towards sunset. Jack made his way to steerage and searched the common area. There was no sign of Rose, Tommy or Fabrizio. He ran into Helga and asked if she had seen them, but her broken accent made her impossible to understand. He went to round a corner when he felt something slam him into the wall. Tommy pinned Jack's shoulders against the wall whilst Fabrizio gave him an angry glare, not bothering to keep Tommy under control this time.
"You've got a lotta nerve showin' your face around here."
"Where is she? I've made a mistake, and I need to tell her that."
"I think she already knows" growled Tommy.
"I need to talk to her" repeated Jack.
"Good luck getting through us" Fabrizio added in.
"Please, I love her."
It was hard to say who was more shocked by this confession, but Tommy loosened his grip on Jack and put his arms down.
"Sure have a stupid way of showin it" muttered Tommy.
"You have another lady, no?" questioned Fabrizio.
"I'd leave her, I'd leave it all to be with Rose" Jack had never said or felt something so honest in his life.
"Room nineteen, go" said Tommy. Jack gave an appreciative smile, shook Tommy's hand and went to leave. Tommy pulled him back.
"Don't make me regret this. You better take care of her, I swear if I see her like this again…" he said seriously.
Jack nodded and with that he sped off to the steerage rooms.
The walls had been painted a headache inducing enamel white, the halls like a maze. He finally made it to room nineteen and knocked loudly on the door.
"Please just leave me alone" answered a small voice from the other side of the door.
"Rose, it's me."
"Jack?"
"Look Rose I made a mistake, you're the fire in me. You're keeping me here, and I would continue to be trapped if it wasn't for you."
"Jack, we can't do this. I know how your world works. I used to be in it, you know."
"Rose-"
"Please, for both of our sakes, leave me alone."
Jack slumped against the door, knowing that whatever they had was now over. He put his hands in his pocket and felt a small slip of paper in there. Pulling it out he read that it was the note he had received from Rose. "Make it count, meet me at the clock" he read aloud. He ripped off the end of it, leaving 'Make it count' and slid those words under her door.
Tommy and Fabrizio saw him leave their area looking disheartened, and saw he'd returned minutes later with a sketchpad and headed towards the bow of the ship. Minutes later Cora came skipping over to the two of them and informed them that Rose was looking for them, and then ran off after her father called out to her. The two of them went through the corridors and made it out to the common room. Rose rounded the corner and found them.
"Are you okay Rose?" asked Fabrizio, concerned.
"Yes. I'm fine. Have you seen Jack?"
"Out on the bow is the last we saw of him" said Tommy, still unsure of if he trusted Jack.
Rose thanked them both and made her way there hoping that she wasn't too late to make it count.
Jack had left his sketchpad on the bench behind him as he clung onto the railing around the bow. The wind whipped his hair against his face as he stood there with his eyes closed.
"Hello Jack."
He turned around, and there stood Rose. He could never tire of looking upon this breathtakingly beautiful girl before him.
"I changed my mind" she said simply. "Tommy and Fabrizio said you'd be up here."
"It's my favourite place to go to escape from the drama around me. Come here"
He extended his hand and she took it, then he pulled her towards him, his eyes fixed on hers. "Now close your eyes, go on" he instructed softly, and she did as she was told. He led her to the rail he was holding, and they climbed it together. Still with her eyes shut, Rose did as she was told and held Jack's hand.
"Do you trust me?" he asked sincerely.
"I trust you" she replied.
He put his hands around her waist to secure her position and told her to open her eyes.
Rose's eyes snapped open and all she could see was the deep blue ocean in front of her. No ship, no ground, just her and Jack soaring above the body of water.
"I'm flying!" she exclaimed excitedly.
He put intertwined his fingers with hers, his face resting on her shoulder.
"Come Josephine in my flying machine" Jack sang softly, making them both smile.
Slowly he pulled his and her arms around her, embracing Rose and relishing the moment. She turned her face towards him, the closeness keeping them warm. He moved his lips onto hers and they kissed passionately in their own sky high world. The kiss was so powerful, both of them felt like one entity. On the ship sailed, the fast winds blowing harshly on Jack and Rose. But it didn't matter; nothing else mattered at that moment other than the love between them.
