By the time Jack had gotten up to the first class lobby, it seems that the anxiety had spread there too. The rich folk were blissfully unaware of what was going on as the staff urged and insisted that they put on their lifebelts. Hurrying, Jack made his way to the stateroom to find his mother, Catherine and Nathan all getting Trudy to outfit them with their lifebelts. Nathan excused himself whilst Ruth insisted that she needed to dress in something warmer.

Catherine paced like a venomous viper waiting to strike. She walked up to Jack, smirked to hold back tears and then slapped him across the face with full force.

"Father says you plan on leaving me. How very dare you, Jack. Do you have any idea what kind of stupid decision you are making?"
Jack stayed silent, unsure of what to do now that Rose had taken off. Nathan had entered and told them to go to the first class lobby.

"Now for once in your life Jack, do something right and stay with our crowd. There seems to be some sort of issue arising" sneered Catherine.

He nodded numbly and put on his own lifebelt, following Catherine, her father and Ruth to the lobby as he did so.

A bunch of familiar faces waited around the lobby, including that of Mr. Andrews. Jack saw his lost expression and approached him, with Catherine and Nathan watching like a hawk.
"Mr. Andrews, I saw it. The iceberg we struck, I see it in your eyes. What kind of trouble are we dealing with?"
Mr. Andrews turned to Jack, disappointment and worry infecting his expression.
"The ship will sink. It's a mathematical certainty. Tell only who you must, I don't want to be responsible for a panic."
Jack nodded gravely as Mr. Andrews continued.
"They're going to take women and children first, then after that make sure you head to a lifeboat."

And with that Thomas Andrews scurried off to urge more passengers to put on their lifebelts. Eventually they were all evacuated out onto the decks by the increasingly troubled staff.
"This is ridiculous" muttered Ruth. "Trudy, go back to our state rooms and switch on the heaters. I want them to be warm when we get back."
Trudy looked reluctant, but obeyed as usual. Jack pulled lightly on her arm. "Here Trudy, take this" he instructed, taking off his lifebelt and handing it to her. She shook her head and began to argue but Jack insisted it was an order. She smiled and then hurried back to their rooms.
"She won't need it anyway, this ship is unsinkable" laughed Nathan.
"Yet it's sinking sir" said Jack plainly.
Catherine, Nathan and Ruth looked at him as if the idea was absurd.
"Mr. Andrews told me. The women and children will be the first on the lifeboats. Then the men if there is room."

They all stood in silence as the situation became real. Molly Brown came over and was instructing women and children to board.
"Come on Ruth, Catherine. Follow me, there's no time for lollygagging."

Jack watched as the women were ushered onto a boat and Nathan strode over to one of the commanding officers. Some words were exchanged and some money was flashed and before he knew it, Jack was being ushered onto a boat as well. Nathan sat down beside him and hugged Catherine tightly. The order was given to lower the boat and they slowly began to descend into the ocean.

Nathan looked at Jack and slowly handed him his sketchbook. Confused, Jack took it from him.
"Where did you find this?"
"On the table where you left it. Your work is quite dazzling Mr. Dawson. I hope you don't mind that I took one out, the beautiful sketch you did earlier."
Jack struggled to think for a moment and then it suddenly hit him. Sick to his stomach, he listened as Nathan continued.
"It's locked away in the safe, just like the real diamond and the one wearing it is locked away."

It all dawned on him. That's why Rose was missing! Jack felt like a fool, how could he, for even a second, have doubted Rose? The one he trusted, the one he wanted, the one he loved. She was trapped and locked away somewhere and nobody would think to rescue her. Jack looked around at the panic surrounding him, flares had been let off and the officers were yelling above the noise. They had gotten an early lifeboat, but they'd be filling up fast. Jack heard a couple above him that he recognised as Isidor and Ida Strauss. Isidor was urging Ida to board a ship but she was refusing.
"Where you go, I go. Don't argue with me Isidor, you know it does no good."
The two embraced and headed back towards the lobby and Jack knew what he had to do.

"You jump, I jump" he said aloud, to the puzzlement of his fellow passengers. With that Jack stood up, hurried towards the edge of the lifeboat and jumped back towards the open windows of the ship. The women gasped as Jack clung on and climbed back on to the ship. He hoisted himself up and looked back at the lifeboat, knowing it would be the last time he saw any of them. Molly cried silently but smiled, aware of what he was doing. Ruth begged Jack to come back onto the boat. He felt a tear roll down his cheek, suddenly sad to see the last of the people he despised. He turned around and made his way through the crowd.

"Daddy, stop him" shrieked Catherine repeatedly as Jack raced back into find his one true love.
