A/N: Sorry it's late, I've had a serious case of writer's block :( And to make things worse, I started writing another story, completely different to this storyline D:
Chapter 11
Kia woke with a scream.
"No! I didn't!" She squeezed her eyes shut and shoved her face deeper into her pillow. "I didn't! I never!'
"Kia? What is it?" Kaiba's arms were around her in an instant and she shivered.
"A dream... When my parents abandoned me..." Tears threatened to fall from her eyes. Although she felt nothing toward her parents anymore, the emotions from when she was younger hit her like a brick wall. Neglect. Depression. Fear. Sadness. Pain.
"Would you feel better if you told me about it?" Kaiba offered gently. Kia sniffed and told him all she remembered.
"We never plotted anything..." She looked down at her hands clasped neatly on her lap. "We spoke in irish because it was easier..."
"How did your father react?" Kaiba frowned at the story.
"He became extremely angry and demanded that I go to my room. The maid brought me dinner at seven that evening, two hours after the actual meal..." Kia looked back up at Kaiba. "My stepmother entered my room at six the following morning and began packing my suitcase."
"Packing your suitcase? Your father decided to deport you to Japan without asking you your part?" Kaiba took her hand and rubbed soothing circles with his thumb on her palm.
"Yes. I'd never flown aware before. We flew from Japan to Ireland when I was a few weeks old and passed between Ireland and Britain by ferry. I was scared, naturally.
"I sat by myself for the fourteen-hour flight. My father and stepmother sat in front of me, laughing and drinking. They told the flight attendants that we were going for a holiday. No-one ever read my ticket...
"We landed in Tokyo and the first thing we did was go to an expensive restaurant. Over dinner, my father told me that I would be staying here while they returned to England. I was taken to the orphanage with my small suitcase of clothes. And that was where I stayed until three years ago." Kia smiled.
"I never properly knew my mother either..." Kaiba's sad words made Kia grimace. "She died giving birth to Mokuba. I was only six at the time. Besides, I spent a lot of time with my father.
"My father died in a car accident when I was nine. Our relatives used up our inheritance and dumped us in the orphange here in Domino when the money ran out. And that was where we stayed until I was eleven.
"That was when Gozaburo Kaiba entered the picture and I played him in a game of chess..." Kaiba was surprisingly comfortable telling her this. Under normal circumstances, he would either become angry or depressed recounting his childhood, but not now.
"I saw it..." Kia flashed a large, beautiful smile at Kaiba.
"Saw what?" Kaiba smirked back at her.
"Your chess-game. It was broadcast live on my favourite game-channel..." She suddenly stood up in excitement. "Come with me! How could I forget?" She grabbed Kaiba's hands and dragged him out into the hallway, into her old bedroom.
"Uh, Kia... You should rest-" Kaiba was cut off by Kia's hand.
"No, I'm fine.." She smirked at him. "Look at this!" She reached under the bed and pulled out a Video Tape, something Kaiba hadn't seen for years. "This! I was recording a duel-monsters duel and something amazing happened!"
Kia ran out of the room and Kaiba followed, genuinely confused.
"Kia! You should be resting!" he shouted after her. She laughed and kept running, down the stairs and into the living room. Mokuba appeared from the kitchen just as Kaiba reached the main hallway.
"Seto? Is this some sort of foreplay?" Kaiba's eyes widened at Mokuba's question.
"What?! No! Kia's gone run-about with a tape and I-" Kaiba was interrupted by Kia's voice.
"Seto! Mokuba! Look!" The pair of them entered the living room and saw Kia in front of the large television, a duel between Pegasus and Solomon Mouto playing from the tape.
"You know this is old, Pegasus has both eyes!" Mokuba exclaimed and burst out laughing. Kaiba smirked and moved closer to Kia.
"Come on, you should be in bed..." He placed a hand on her shoulder and another on her waist as he spoke.
"I'll go in a moment, just wait..." Kia stared at the screen, waiting. Kaiba sighed and watched too, bored with the display.
*Solomon played his Dark Magician alongside his Dark Magician Girl and ended his turn. Pegasus played his magic card Doppelganger and created his Toon Dark Magician Girl, much to Solomon's displeasure. When Pegasus ended his turn, Solomon played De-Spell and was about to destroy Pegasus' Toon World when the programme was interrupted.
"We interrupt this duel for the Chess-Match of the century! Long-term Chess Champion Gozaburo Kaiba has agreed to play one chess game with an eleven-year-old orphan in Domino Orphanage, with high stakes.
Should the chess champion lose, he must adopt the child and his younger brother without delay. Of course, as is expected, if he wins then he may leave without adopting anyone."
The chess match was then shown 'live', with Gozaburo on the left and little Seto on the right. Mokuba's raven-coloured hair was seen slightly behind Kaiba, his face smiling with adoration for his older brother. Kaiba gasped when he saw this; At the time, he never knew that it was shown to the world, live on television.
Gozaburo offered to let Seto start and so he moved a pawn one space forward. The Chess-Champion moved his pawn two spaces and mocked Seto for his safe move.
"You don't have a chance at winning if you move as tentatively as that!" Gozaburo laughed a hearty laugh as he watched Seto move another pawn one space forward. He then moved a pawn diagonally adjacent to his king two spaces forward.
Seto smiled a triumphant smile as he moved his bishop into the desired position. Gozaburo moved his first pawn forward and took Seto's first pawn.
"See? I just took your pawn Seto" Gozaburo pointed out. Seto moved his bishop into the gap between Gozaburo's pawns and declared with a calm face;
"Check-Mate"
The crowd began clapping and congratulating Seto for his win. Gozaburo stared down at the chess set, willing the bishop to disappear. He ground his teeth, his face went red from embarrassment and with an angry sigh, he signed the adoption papers that were laid out beside him. *
Kaiba turned to Kia and was met with sparkling blue eyes. He needed to ask her about her eyes changing colour.
"When I started at Domino High, I was both amazed and excited to know that Seto Kaiba, the young man who had beaten Gozaburo Kaiba as a child and taken over his company as a young adult, was in the same year as me. But that was all I knew about you..." Kia shivered slightly and looked down at herself. She was wearing a thin red vest and a pair of black silk pajama pants.
"Come on, you're cold. Let's go back..." Kaiba retrieved the video from the video player and hugged Kia to him as he lead her back to their room.
"Seto, the... The rod, where is it?" Kia suddenly remembered what had happened. He furrowed his brow in anger as they climbed the staircase.
"I locked it into the safe in the library. I hope you don't mind..." Kaiba pushed the door that was left ajar and brought her inside.
"Of course I don't mind..." Kia answered absent-mindedly. She thought about her dream that she'd had a mere ten minutes ago. But she didn't say a word to her husband, who was currently rummaging through the locker-drawer at his side of the bed.
"Kia, get into bed." Kaiba requested from where he sat. Kia scooched across the bed and knelt behind him.
"What are you looking for?" She ran her hands along his broad shoulders and brought her face down onto his shoulder and looked down, seeing his hands stop their search. He looked over his shoulder at her in surprise.
"What an odd position you've assumed. You were never the one to act so... Desirable..." His voice changed from surprised to sly. Kia smirked and kissed his cheek.
"Am I in trouble for this?" Kaiba turned around and smiled slightly at her.
"Not at all..." He moved closer to her and pulled her slightly toward his lips when the doorbell suddenly rang out. He frowned and Kia laughed, as they stood up and she found her robe.
As they walked downstairs together, Kaiba felt an unusual chill run down his spine and had a curious feeling of dé-ja vu. Mokuba's somewhat deep voice floated up the stairs.
"Who are you?" he demanded. A familiar, sweet voice followed.
"My name is Kisara and I must see Seto.."
