Chapter Three

Bruce held firmly onto Embern's shoulders to steady him as the building beneath their feet shook, his eyes quickly scanned over Raven who held Skye protectively in her arms. Last he turned to Robin, a mixture of emotions across his face, eyes burning into Raven; despite everything.

"Richard." He spoke firmly to break him from his fixated trance on Raven. "Everything will be explained to you in full detail, but only when Raven and the children are safe. They are in danger and we need to get them out of here."

Raven held Skye tightly against her, the sounds of concrete crumbling underneath their very feet was deafening, however she couldn't move, her eyes lingered on Robin. She could feel his anger, his frustration, his shock and worst of all, his hate. She use to feel his warmth, his kindness and his love, although they never shared the words, she could feel it, she could feel it whenever she was around both Robin and Beastboy, they made her feel special, important. But his hate didn't matter at this moment, her children were in danger and she needed his help. "Robin…" The words left a dry taste in her mouth. "You can be mad at me, you have every right, but we need your help. Please."

Robin stared at her, a million thoughts running through his head, he had missed her so much, from her sweet smell of tea and lavender, to the cute way she would sit on the lounge, legs crossed, book twice the size of her resting in her lap. "What do you need me to do?" The words came out strained and he found himself swallowing hard as he turned from her to his father.

Bruce pushed a button on the side of his watch. "Get Raven and the kids somewhere safe." As he spoke to Robin a drone flew up towards Bruce, dropping a box full of bat-stuff onto the roof causing Embern's eyes to light up.

"I can help you save the people hurt in the blast! People worth saving!"

Raven flinched at his words and her eyes flickered to Embern who stood staring at his father, eyes wide and hurt for a moment, but just a moment before his face went blank. Bruce placed a reassuring firm hand on Embern's shoulder. "These three are the most important."

Bang

Raven's eyes went wide at the sudden sharp pain that struck her right side, she stumbled over herself in pain and reached up to grasp at wherever it was coming from, Skye let out a scream and Embern pulled from Bruce's grasp to run to his mother. Raven pulled her hand away from her side to be greeted with a blood-stained palm, was she shot? The little hairs on the back of her neck stood up as she heard another bang, she pushed herself off the ground and ran at Embern, throwing herself on top of him, taking him to the ground, feeling the bullet graze her shoulder. "Raven!" She heard him call her, but everything became fuzzy, then smoke? Though this smoke looked so familiar, she couldn't quite put her finger on why. She felt herself lift off the concrete, almost as if she was floating before she lost consciousness.

"What the hell was that?" Robin yelled at Bruce, Raven's limp body in his arms, two crying children beside him and batman pushing them into a car.

"Someone is after Raven and the children, we don't know who or why. That bullet isn't a normal bullet, I can smell its toxins. See needs to get to an infirmary, no hospital can help this." He pulled open the back door of one of his many cars.

"You want me to take her to Titans Tower…" Robin growled placing her in the back seat. "After everything she put me… the team through?"

Embern took a deep breath to hold back the tears before tugging on the bottom of Robin's suit. "She's my mum and I love her… She may have run away but it was because she was scared… Please don't let mine and Skye's mum die… She may not be special to you… but…" The tears welled up in his eyes and tried his hardest to act strong in front of this man he had secretly admired. "She's special to us…"

Robin felt strange when he stared down at this little version of himself, he was so little yet so brave, covered in his mother's blood. Robin simply nodded silently and pushed the small children into the car before shutting the door. "I can't believe you didn't tell me." He growled swinging open the driver's side door. "I can't ever forgive you for this."

Bruce watched as he slammed the door and sped off. "Yes you will." He said quietly before turning around and heading inside to help survivors.

Robin sped out of Gotham, dodging and weaving in and out of the traffic. It was a good two hours from Gotham to Jump City and he wasn't sure Raven had that long to spare. He found himself glancing in the rear view mirror every now and then to check on Raven and the kids, he could see Skye silently crying while Embern held his sister in a tight embrace, both covered in dark red blood. He felt like he should say something to comfort them, but he knew that he had said some nasty things in front of them in his rage. He wasn't sure how he felt, angry? Betrayed? Frustrated? Confused? Love? He hated the way she still made his heart skip a beat, from her beauty to her sarcasm, he still adored this woman. Then there was Embern, this child that claims he is his, looks just like him only tiny. His thoughts then travelled back to the roof, when he was informed only one of the two children was his, yet they look the same age and Embern called Raven his and Skye's mum. His eyes drifted to the young girl, her dark green hair fell down her face, the tip of her ears pointing out through, and he could have sworn she looked just like a certain changeling only pale. His eyes suddenly went wide as he remembered bits and pieces of a night long ago.

"What you're thinking… It would be correct." Embern's small voice was heard from the back.

This would have startled any normal person, however Robin had been in love with someone very much like him. "You're a Telepathic, like your mother?" It wasn't really a question and they both knew it, so Embern simply nodded with the rest of the ride remaining silent, even in their minds.

Robin pulled into Titan's Tower with a screech, parking the car harshly before jumping out and opening the back door, reaching for her pulse to ensure she was still alive. Although she had lost a lot of blood, her weak pulse was felt, he pulled her from the back seat with the children sticking close behind. "Yo, Robin, what the hell did you screech into my garage?" Cyborg yelled from the main room through the intercom.

Robin didn't bother waiting for the elevator, there was no time, he scaled up the stairs; silently impressed the children didn't lag behind. He burst into the main room, sweat beads across his brow. "We need to get her to the infirmary right now, she's lost a lot of blood."

"What the hell?" Cyborg turned to look at Robin holding someone in his arms, blood everywhere.

"Cyborg! Now!" Robin repeated making a B-line for the infirmary. "Where are the others?"

"Erm, out I think." Cyborg replied, feet moving to follow Robin before his mind had even caught up on what was happening. Robin entered the infirmary and placed Raven gently onto one of the beds before running to get anything Cyborg may need. "Robin you tell me what the hell is going on before I!.. before…. I" He didn't need to be told, his eyes landed on the small pale figure, purple hair scattered around her, matching crystal on her forehead.

"Cyborg! She's dying." Robin hissed getting in his vision to stop him staring at the girl they had all believed to be a ghost. "I don't know much… about anything she has done, I'm angry and pissed, she was dumped on me but I am not going to let her die! Are you?"

Cyborg stared down at the girl he once called his 'little sister', somehow she looked even smaller now than she did eight years ago. She had hurt the team so much when she had just up and vanished without a word, he was hoping every day that she would come back, that hope always died a little every year she never came back. He sighed, ran his hand over his head before shaking his head. "I don't let family die." Robin nodded and the two men began to franticly get to work on helping Raven. Embern and Skye remained unnoticed by the large robot as they sat in the shadows and held their breath.

"It's hard to say, that toxin was a bitch, but I believe she will pull through." Cyborg sighed placing down Raven's chart. He heard more than just one sigh of relief, his arm flipped instantly into his gun pointing it in the directing of the other sounds.

"Wait." Robin said jumping in front of Cyborg. "…Embern… Skye you can come out."

Embern took Skye's hand gently into his, holding her the slightest bit behind him to keep her safe from harm and for some reason, this made Robin's heart swell with pride. Cyborg saw the two small figures exit the shadow and his jaw dropped, you'd have to be blind not to see the 'mini me' Robin. "This explains… a lot…"

Robin looked down at the two children. "Your mum's going to be okay, Cyborg here is one of the best."

Skye's face lit up as she beamed up at Cyborg, running forward and hugging his leg, looking up at him with a smile. "Thank you, Sir!"

It took only a moment to see her toothy grin to remind him of his best friend, his eyes darted to Robin who could only take a deep breath and nod. Robin could practically see Cyborg's brain working to figure out the situation, he still wasn't sure he understood the situation. He caught Embern try to hide a yawn and glanced at the large clock that sat above the desk in the infirmary, it read twelve thirty. "Um, Cyborg can you send out a message to the other Titans to crash elsewhere tonight… Say we had a system reset or something… I guess we should get you two showered and in a bed?" He felt so awkward looking down at the two child, he was way out of his depth.

"We want to stay with mum." Embern replied just as awkwardly, pulling Skye back to his side and off the large robot's leg.

Robin nodded. "We'll get you showered and a change of clothes… I think we have some old clothes somewhere… Then you can sleep in the infirmary for tonight…." The twins nodded silently and followed Robin without another word.

Cyborg stepped into the infirmary seeing Robin sitting at the desk staring towards Raven, Embern asleep beside her and a small white cat curled up on the other side, Cyborg assumed Skye was a changeling like her father. "The others are finding elsewhere to stay until sometime tomorrow, I told them we had to reset and test the towers defense systems." Robin glanced back at him and gave a swift nod. "I have to say, I have a lot of questions." He sighed walking towards Robin and taking the spare chair beside him.

"You and me both." He murmured. "She was with Bruce in Gotham City this whole time, she had been his business partner."

Cyborg lent back in the chair with a deep sigh. "So how long had you and Rae been a thing? And BB? Man how did we miss that?"

"We weren't a 'thing'." His voice didn't come across as convincing as he wanted it too. "It happened once."

"Man BB had a massive crush on Rae for months, how did you come into the picture?"

Robin sighed, his eyes lingering over Raven and the children, he wasn't really in the mood to be interrogated by Cyborg. He was so angry at her for leaving him without a word, he was mad at Bruce for knowing all this time exactly where she was, he was mad that he had a child he knew nothing about, why didn't she tell him? Did he not make her feel comfortable enough to tell him everything? He had thought they had gotten pretty close leading up to her vanishing. Robin remembered Cyborg had asked him a question and turned to look towards his friend. "I don't know if my head is in the right space right now. We haven't even had a chance to speak yet."

"So in other words, you want me to drop it for now?" Cyborg asked looking from his leader back to the guests they had currently, Robin folded his arms against his chest, sighing mostly to himself. "Take your time man, but we can't keep the others out of the tower forever." Cyborg placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder before standing up and heading for the exit. "Don't be too mad at her… Seems like you all got into a crazy situation and she did what she thought was best for all involved. She was the smartest after all. I'm heading over to see Bee, night."

And with that Cyborg exited the infirmary leaving Robin to his thoughts, which wasn't something Robin wanted to deal with at the moment. He stood up and made his way over to the infirmary bed, his steps were slow and careful, trying not to wake any of them. He took the seat beside the infirmary bed Raven had been place on, blood patches still stained the floor around the bed. He looked down at his suit and noticed it too had her blood stained on it and he sighed again, slouching back into the chair, watching over her.

Raven jumped awake in a panic, unsure of where she was, what had happened and where her children were. "You're in Titans Tower, Skye and Embern are asleep beside you." Robin voice was so soft Raven almost didn't hear it over her panic. She turned her head enough to see him sitting in the spare chair beside her bed. "You almost didn't make it, Cyborg managed to bring you back."

Raven glanced down at her two children asleep either side of her, a wave of relief washing over her. "Thank you… I know it mustn't have been easy deciding to help me."

"It was the easiest decision in my life." Raven turned to look at him, an unreadable expression on her face, he used to know all her expression. "I may be angry, Raven, but letting you die wasn't ever an option."

Raven's eyes darted down to her hands which rested on her lap and an expression Robin could read fell on her face, she was embarrassed and he could gather it was for many things and this made him feel guilty. She didn't know what to say, she felt her palms grow sweaty and she wasn't sure what she should say, what could she say? Nothing would make the fact that she up and disappeared eight years ago. Let alone disappearing with both Beastboy's and Robin's children. "I didn't know what to do." The words came out strained and low, she cleared her throat but kept her eyes on her fingers, pulling them in her nervous state. "Maybe I should have told you both… but I was sixteen… I didn't know what to do… I was lucky I met Bruce just after I had the twins, we were close to living on the street."

"You would rather have lived on the streets then with us?"

"After just finding out my twins had different fathers? What do you think they would have called me if they had found out? What would have happened to Skye and Embern to be in that kind of spotlight from birth? I tried to protect everyone involved." Raven snapped before sighing and carefully floating out of the bed, ensuring not to wake the twins. Her feet touched the floor and she adjusted her weight on her wounds with a pained expression on her face. Robin couldn't take his eyes off her, she was still in the little black dress from the party and it hugged her curves showing off all her body, her long legs. He felt those damn butterflies in his stomach as he watched her carefully and slowly stretch out her body.

"I'm sorry, Raven…" Raven practically spun around to face him, stumbling over herself in her haste, letting out a hiss of pain as she reached out for the bed rails but instead found arms, Robin had leapt to her side, grabbing her to keep her from falling to the ground. Her head felt fuzzy as his smell overwhelmed her, god she missed him, she missed both of them. "I said some horrible things to you on the roof, although I'm angry it's no excuse for the way I spoke to you… and Embern… I didn't think about how this affected you."

"I'm sorry I left without a word… I didn't know what else to do." She steadied herself before stepping out of his hold, she tried her best not to look up at him, instead staring at her sleeping children. "I'm going to have a shower, that's okay, right?"

Robin knew he wasn't going to get much more out of her at the moment, the way she was avoiding his stare, he knew she had closed up on him. "Sure…" She didn't look at him just nodded before silently floating out of the room.

"Mister Robin?" A small voice came from behind him, he turned around to see Skye sitting up in the bed, rubbing her eyes. "I'm hungry…"

Robin raised an eyebrow, glancing at the clock seeing it read five forty-five, had he really been awake for that long just thinking? "Um… I can make you some food."

Her face lit up, a toothy grin forming on her face as she jumped up and ran towards him, careful not to wake up Embern. She jumped off the bed and roughly levitated down to the floor, nearly staking her landing, Robin raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything, simply pointing in the direction they were going to go. "Do you have any waffles?" She mused walking close enough to Robin not to lose him but far enough that she was comfortable.

"Sure." He frowned to himself at the stiff way he was speaking to the little girl, she didn't seem to take notice however her eyes were darting all around the tower amused by the large building and the glass windows that filled the hallways giving off a breath taking view of the city. "Your mums gone for a shower."

"Yeah, I know." Skye smiled, she pressed her face up against one of the windows, in awe of the site of the start of the sunrise against the lake below the tower.

"… You can watch the sunrise if you want… there's a window in the kitchen." Robin felt a small smile form on his face at the look she gave him, eyes shining with delight. "It's just through this door."

Skye grinned running through the doors and into the titan's main room which had the kitchen and dining room connected to it. She ran straight over to the window in her excitement, pulling a spare chair over to sit on it. Robin went into the kitchen to begin making breakfast while watching Skye watch the sunrise with so much excitement and amazement in her eyes. "Home doesn't have pretty sunrises like this." She turned to Robin and grinned.

"Yeah, I remember Gotham… isn't much sun there."

"Lots of rain." She nodded turning back to the window. Robin prepared the waffles and placed them onto the kitchen table, along with some other bits and pieces before pouring Skye a drink of orange juice. "Thank you!" She grinned stabbing a waffle with a fork before dragging it onto her plate.

Robin took a seat opposite her and watched her devour the food in front of her, for a small human being she sure could eat. "Mum would kill you if she saw you eating like that." Embern's voice came from the doorway.

Skye stuck her tongue out with a mouth full of food which made Embern pull a disgusted face. "Would you like any?" Robin asked uncomfortably, looking towards him.

Embern nodded slowly making his way towards the table, taking a seat beside his sister, nudging her in the side receiving a snot in reply. Embern took a plate before sliding a piece of toast onto it, he looked at Skye who shook her head, this made Robin curious, could they read each other's minds? Since they were only half siblings how much were they connected? The longer he spent around these children the more question he had. The doors swished open and a now showered Raven stood in the doorway, she had found a pair of jeans and a black tank top still in her old room, her hair was tied up in a high ponytail, even then it reach down to her bottom. "Mum!" Both the children yelled jumping up and running towards her.

Raven smile and held her arms out, awaiting her children's embrace. "Sorry for scaring you, rats." She said giving them a squeeze, ignoring the dull pain it gave her wounds.

"Please don't do it again." Skye whispered giving her a squeeze in return. "It was scary."

Embern didn't say anything but she felt his nod of approval to what Skye had said. She glanced up at Robin who watched them with so much interest. "Thank you for making them breakfast." She said softly.

"Mister Robin let me watch the sunrise over the lake, mummy! It was so pretty." Skye beamed, jumping up and down on the spot.

"Erm… Just Robin is fine, Skye."

Skye's eyes darted to her mother, as if asking for approval. Raven slowly nodded, letting her daughter know it was okay to call him that. Skye grinned and looked back at Robin, nodding before heading back to her food. Raven looked from Embern up to Robin. "I think we need to talk…"

Robin sat up straight, a little taken back by her sudden want to talk to him, he looked down at Embern who was standing almost protectively in front of his mother, staring right back at him with so much intensity. Raven must have known because she tapped his shoulder and he looked back at her, the two seemed to stare at each other for a moment before Embern sighed. "Fine." He groaned heading back over to the table next to Skye.

"Can we?"

Robin nodded and stood up to follow Raven, he knew where she was going to go, her favorite place in Titan's Tower, even after all these years, she still loved the roof. Raven lead them through the door before making her way to the edge of the roof, feeling the breeze against her face, she had missed this. Robin couldn't take his eyes off her, she had her eyes closed leaning over the edge with her eyes closed, sun on her face. "You can't leave again."

Raven's eyes slowly opened but she didn't look back at him, her eyes stayed lingering over the city. "And what about when the rest of the Titans come back, do you think they'll feel the same? After I bailed last time?"

"Beastboy and I deserve to get to know our kids."

Raven stayed silent for a moment looking down at the concrete beneath her hands, it still felt cool against her skin in the early hours of the morning. "Do you even want that responsibility?"

"Yes."

This made Raven turn to face him, her eyes peering at him with an expression on her face he couldn't quite work out. She opened her mouth a few times to speak but kept closing it, sighing to herself. "If that is what they want…"

He picked up on the defeat in her voice and folded his arms. "Raven, we want you here just as much."

"Don't speak for them."

"I want you here."

Raven's mind was racing which matched her heartbeat, she couldn't think straight, she felt so overwhelmed in her emotions that she wasn't sure if she could keep calm and in control with her powers. The way he still looked at her made her heart melt but she had to think of her children, she wasn't a sixteen year old love struck teenager anymore. "I…"

"You and the children are still in danger, so stay here until we figure out what's going on… then once you're safe you can decide what you want to do with Embern and Skye." Robin interrupted before she could say anything further, he meant what he said, he didn't want her to go, he didn't want to lose her again, just having her around him made him feel whole. "Okay?"

Raven was having a battle within herself, part of her wanting nothing more than to grab her children and disappear again while the other part of her didn't want to ever leave him again. "Okay." The words came out tense, like she hadn't fully convinced herself of staying and this worried Robin.

"Calling Robin, hello?" Robin looked down at his t-phone before grabbing it and bringing it in front of his face, seeing Cyborg staring back at him. "Yeah, I hope you sorted everything out cause the others are on their way home."

"They are coming now?" She couldn't mask the panic in her voice and she suddenly felt sick to her stomach.

"Rae! I missed you!" Cyborg sung from the T-phone, Robin turned the com around so that Cyborg could get a proper look at her since the last he had seen of her she had almost died.

Raven gave a small smile seeing him. "Thank you… for what you did last night."

"Ah, it was nothing!" Cyborg grinned. "You're looking much better today! I hope you'll be staying with us for a bit?"

"Way to sound desperate…" Robin muttered under his breath, catching the small smile that crept onto Raven's face.

"For a little." Raven agreed.

"Boo-yea! Well everyone will be home soon!" And with that the com cut off, returning to its black state.

"What if they don't want me around?" Her voice was so quiet he had almost missed her question.

He took careful steps towards her, being cautious not to over step his boundaries. He reached the side of the roof, joining her in leaning over the edge. "No one really got over you leaving, Raven, they adjusted to not having you here but they never really accepted the fact you were gone for good. I was angry at first, perhaps I still am but I can see why you did it, I understand that you tried to do what was best for everyone… I may not agree with you but I understand… the others will too."

"I guess I better go tell Skye and Embern." She hesitated where she stood for a moment and he could tell.

He wanted to start asking her so many questions but he also didn't want to piss her off he had to be patient even if he didn't want to be, so he simply nodded, allowing her to leave the rooftop. He watched her exit the door and sighed, he missed her more than he had realized.

Raven walked back into the main room where Skye and Embern still sat at the table finishing off their breakfast, ignoring the dull pain on her right hip she made her way over to them and sat down opposite them, she didn't know why she felt so nervous, perhaps she was unsure of how to children would react, or the fact that soon she would see Beastboy again. "We're staying here for a bit, aren't we?" Embern's voice broke her out of her intense thought.

"How do you two feel about that? You know, staying here for a little bit."

"Mummy… is my daddy going to be here?" Skye asked quietly.

Raven nodded slowly going over in her head the best way to describe the situation to two almost seven year olds. Embern comprehended a lot more than Skye however they were still just kids. Hell she didn't even completely understand the situation she had gotten herself into, she wasn't sure how her kids would interact with their fathers, let alone how they would handle being fathers to kids who accepted just having Raven. Would her children still love her if Robin and Beastboy became solid figures in their lives? Would they resent her when their older for keeping them away from the titans?

"We love you." Embern smiled, Skye nodding and grinning as well. Raven smiled, one of her true smiles that was rarely shown to others, it always made her children's smiles bigger.

"Raven… They're here." Robin called out from behind them.
