Still don't own it!
I want to cry, but I'm too angry for that. How dare he! I stomp away, not caring where I go, as long as it is away from him. What right does he have to accuse me of casting a spell over him?! Like I would even know how!
I manage to find my way to the front door, and throw it open.
"Labyrinth! Take me-" home…I can't go home, not looking like this.
"Sarah? What's wrong, dear?"
"Take me to Hoggle's." I feel a bit bad for demanding that of her like this. "Please." I blink, and when I open my eyes, I'm in the little collection of houses between the outer wall and the woods. I walk over to his door and knock, wishing he remembered me.
He opens the door. "Oh. It's you."
He says it just like he did the first time we met, and it almost makes me laugh, despite how angry I am at Jareth.
I crouch down so I can look him in the eye."Look, I know you don't remember me, but right now you are the best I have in way of a friend."
"I already told you,-"
"Yes, yes, I know, you don't have any friends. You are your own friend. But…I don't know right now. Once, you left me. Then you came back because I called for you. You were there when I needed you, every time. I guess I was hoping you would be again."
"Well…I guess you can come in. But don't be expectin' nothin' fancy."
"Thank you, Hoggle."
I keep bent over at my waist as I enter his house. I don't know what I was expecting, but the neat little cottage I enter into is not it. It looks to be two or three rooms, and very tidy and organized. I sit down in one of his chairs, and I feel like I'm in a kid's play house.
I'm surprised when he offers me a cup of tea, and I take it with a smile and a thank you.
"So, why does a fancy lady like you insist that I's your friend?"
"You are my friend. And I'm not really that fancy. I'm from the Aboveground."
"Hmph. Human tales." He says it with the same dismissive tone a normal human would say "Fairy tales."
"No, it's true. I wish you remembered. I could really use my friend right now."
"Then give up. Go back home."
"No! I'm not giving up now! I've come too far!" I think about it. "I'm doing alright. It's just, I get the feeling it gets a lot worse from here on in."
He looks at me slightly confused for a second, then shakes his head a little.
"You remember a bit, don't you?"
"Don't be ridiculous."
"What, did you have a feeling of déjà vu?"
"It don't matter."
"I guess it was a false alarm. The Labyrinth always was full of them."
He gives me that confused look again, He blinks and shakes his head again.
"I suppose helping me this time isn't as easy as helping me climb a wall." I stare into the tea for a minute. "I can't run away either. I have to do what I came to do. I just wish I knew how."
"Sarah?" I look up at Hoggle and he's looking at me differently.
"Yes?"
"Sarah…you came to rescue your brother…I lowered the rope to save you from the Wild Things…"
"Hoggle! You remember!" I wrap my arms around him. I almost want to cry again, this time from joy.
"Now, now, don't go gettin' all emotional."
"I can't believe it! I've missed you!"
"There, there. It's ok, Sarah. I remember now. What about Ludo and Sir Didymus?"
"I haven't even seen them. A lot has happened." I let go of him. "It's good to have my friend back."
I walk back into the Castle with a smile on my face, and Winky comes running up to me.
"Where have you been, m'lady? His Majesty was worried. I was, too!"
"I'm sorry, Winky. Next time, I'll try to let you know where I'm going."
"The King has demanded to see you as soon as you walk in!"
"Well, if he wants to apologize, he can come find me. Now then, if you don't mind, I would like afternoon tea served in the library today. If you would please show me the way…?"
Winky shakes herself out of her shock and leads me to the library. And by the time Jareth finds me, I'm deeply engrossed in Love Labour's Won, one of Shakespeare's lost plays, and finished with my tea.
"I ordered that you see me when you returned to the Castle."
"Good for you." I barely spare him a glance.
"Why didn't you come see me?"
"Because apparently I've already broken a law your parents wrote, may as well disobey a royal order while I'm at it. After all, it's not like you care, right? I'm just an enchantress."
"Put down the book, Sarah."
"Or what, Jareth? You'll lock me in my room like a disobedient child? Ohh, scary."
"Sarah, don't play with me!"
"You know, you are convinced that I'm playing with you, but I'm not the one who kissed you and then accused you of using magic against me." I snap the book shut and stand up. "Somehow, I find that offensive. Now if you'll excuse me, there are other ways I would like to spend my time. Maybe, I'll plot to cast a love spell on your entire family…Well, maybe not. Apparently, you are weak enough that a half-mortal who doesn't know magic can cast a love spell, which I'm going to guess is extremely complex, on you and you will fall under it." I walk past him, my head high. Over my dead body is he going to get away with accusing me like that.
"Sarah, I'm sorry. I over-reacted."
I spin to face him. "Over-reacted? You kissed me! You pinned me down! You had me where I couldn't breathe, I couldn't think, I couldn't move, and I'm the one who cast a spell on you? That's more than over-reacted, Jareth. 'Over-reacted' is 'I saw a spider and screamed.' Not 'I kissed a girl then accused her of forbidden magic.' What I don't get, though, is why? Why react like that? Why did you even kiss me?"
He stares at me. "Because I have a rule against kissing, Sarah. I do whatever I want with whoever I want. But kissing creates emotion. So, I don't do it. I don't know why I kissed you."
I watch him as he approaches me. "Sarah, I don't know who you were to me before I forgot you. But you are rapidly becoming someone that is dangerous for me to be around this time. And, honestly, as much as I like it, I don't know how to react to it."
"Maybe you should listen to what your heart says, not your brain."
He slides his hand behind my neck again and tangles it in my hair. "Careful with that advice. That is risky advice, Precious."
He leans down, and my eyes drift closed. "Your Majesty! The High King and Queen are here for you again! And they brought a guest!" I open my eyes to see his inches from mine.
"Take them to the nice parlor again. And get them some wine again. Tell them I will be right there."
I take a step back, remembering that I am supposed to be angry at him. "You should go see your parents." And with that I turn and head to my room.
