Happy Accidents
"You're so beautiful." He whispers it into her ear, against her skin, into her neck. "I just can't help myself."
Her breaths come shallow and her heart palpitates. "Stars, Kai. You're such a tease."
His fingers curl against the shirt on her back, wrinkling the material. He hums, his throat vibrating against her collarbone. "Too many layers." He tugs at her shirt for emphasis.
Cinder's lungs hitch. "You're drunk."
"Not at all," he says. "Just in love."
She can't stifle the eye roll, though her heart does skip about three beats. She tangles her fingers in his hair and pulls his head back. His eyes are dazed but no, he's not drunk.
Cinder curses. He always makes her lose control of her glamour. She notices it rippling around her, cursing herself for not being able to tell the warmth he gives her from the kind that slips down her spine when her gift breaks free. As she reels it in, his eyes clear and he blinks a few times.
Then, he gives her a sly grin, his eyes sweeping down to their bodies, pressed together with heat radiating between them. Their eyes meet again. "Hey."
Guilt fills her. "Hey."
"Did it happen again?" he asks.
Cinder sighs. "Yeah."
"Well, no reason to end it here."
Her guilt dissipates as he captures her lips, and this time, she makes sure not to let her gift slip free again.
