We'll Sit in the Dark

"I found that the only way I could control this sorrow was not to think of [it] at all, which was almost as painful as the loss itself."
-Robin MicKinley, Beauty

Ace lives life in scraps of time, grasping whatever he can take. And then, one day, there is nothing left.

He watches his brother slip off into that endless dream and is guilty when all he feels is relief.

The pain comes later, he learns.

When he opens a note from his brother—hands trembling—and reads it, he falls into a chair and covers his face. He cries until he has no tears left, and then keeps on crying.

He imagines the rest of his life without his best friend and doesn't know where to begin.

'See you later.'
