When Luffy's grandfather first adopted him, Ace had been determined to keep his distance. He had been through more than a fair share of foster homes, each ending badly.

He remained cold towards the boisterous cop, Garp, and his stupid grandson, both of whom seemed as if they had never experienced a single day of hardship in their lives. He was young and angry, just like a dog that had been kicked too many times, and like such a dog, his bite was every bit as severe as his bark.

But still, even against such ferocity, Luffy was never deterred.
