Chapter 10 - The Letters of Roxanne Collette Weasley

September 2018 ~ First Year

Dear Mum and Dad,

Please don't be upset. I don't know how it happened, and I'm really sorry, but I'm in Ravenclaw. Dominique says you won't mind—do you? I don't understand how I'm in Ravenclaw, I'm not really very clever. Do you think maybe the hat made a mistake? Maybe it meant to put Molly in Ravenclaw instead. But that can't be right, because I'm not brave either, and she is, so obviously she's meant to be in Gryffindor.

I'm in the common room, and it's very beautiful here. You can see out of the windows all round, all the way to the lake and the forest and the mountains. Our beds have pretty blue covers on them. I just wish Molly was here because I don't know who to talk to. And I'm scared I'm not going to be able to answer the riddle to get into the common room, and then I'll get locked out.

I'm finishing this later, because a girl called Ruth came up and started talking to me. She saw me drawing a picture of the common room for you (I'm putting it in with the letter), and guess what, she likes drawing too! And then we talked for ages. She's really nice, and she wants to be a real artist and go to art school, that's a thing they have in the Muggle world. She's Muggleborn.

I hope you like the picture.

Lots of love,

Roxy

September 2019 ~ Second Year

Dear Mum and Dad,

Fred told me what he wrote about me. It is NOT TRUE. It is a big fat LIE. I haven't got a boyfriend and I'm never going to have a boyfriend, and definitely not a Slytherin one who's older than me. Here's a picture of Fred with his stupid head being SQUASHED by an Erumpent sitting on it. It's what he deserves.

Love,

Roxy

January 2021 ~ Third Year

Dear Grandma,

I've been working on the spells from the book you gave me for Christmas, and here is one of the very first things I've made with magical sewing! It's an apron for you, since yours is so old it keeps getting holes. I know it's not very good, but it's better than the skirt I tried first. I've been drawing lots of designs for dresses too, but I know I won't be able to make them yet, so I'll just have to keep practicing until I can.

Me and Ruth have got one corner of the common room where we set up a table to be our studio—it's nice working together. Molly says it would be no use doing something like that in the Gryffindor common room, because someone would just come over and annoy you, and you wouldn't be able to leave anything out without people messing around with it. I can kind of understand that when I think about some of the people in Gryffindor, e.g. James and Louis. But here people mostly just leave us alone.

Sometimes Gordon and Ira come and hang around with us, and that can be a tiny bit annoying, though mostly they only do it if they're going to study, so it's okay. Gordon is fine because if you say you're concentrating, he shuts up. Ira doesn't really shut up, but we don't mind him really. Ruth likes it when he comes over because she says he's beautiful and she likes to draw his face. He is quite beautiful, though I would be way too embarrassed to say that. Ruth is never embarrassed. The thing with her is that even though she says things like that, it doesn't mean she fancies Ira or anything—she only cares about drawing him.

The others are all okay, I think. James is trying to get the Quidditch team to practise every single day—Angharad says she doesn't mind, but that's because Angharad would fly all the time if she could. Fred says he doesn't care if James is captain, he's not getting out of bed early on a Sunday.

Has anyone heard from Teddy? It was a shame not to see him at Christmas, but I suppose it would have been a bit awkward with Vic. I miss him though. I bet Siberia is beautiful in the winter, I wish he'd send some pictures.

Give my love to Granddad. I'll make him something next time!

Lots of love,

Roxy

October 2021 ~ Fourth Year

Dear Dom,

Of course I'll tell you the news now Fred isn't at school, but I don't think I'll be very good at it. I don't know any of the gossip, and nothing ever happens to me.

It's funny without Fred, even though I didn't see him a lot of the time. Remember when we were all younger, at the Burrow, and Grandma and everyone used to divide us all into the big ones, the middle ones and the little ones? Well, Fred was the last of the big ones, wasn't he, so now there's none of you left at school any more.

James is going out with Clem Robins, but that's not very exciting because he probably won't be going out with her for very long. Last year a boy called Michael Dalrymple asked Molly out, but she said no, and Ruth says she thinks he still fancies her, but Moll says that's silly and she doesn't believe it. That's honestly all the gossip I know! I told you it wasn't very interesting.

Here, have a drawing of Pumpkin instead. It's not finished, because he got up and moved when I was in the middle of it. That's cats for you.

Lots of love,

Roxy

October 2022 ~ Fifth Year

Dear Dom,

Well, there's plenty of news this year, to make up for last, only you aren't going to write any of it in your gossip column, are you? You mustn't, Dom, that would be really mean.

Actually, you might know some of it already. Did you know about Meri Hewitt being attacked? The Aurors came and interviewed people about it, including Hugo, because he was one of he people who was with Meri that day. She's okay, they didn't hurt her, but they modified her memory, so she doesn't know who it was or what really happened. It's awful, poor Meri. You can tell the teachers are really worried about it too—none of us are supposed to walk in the grounds by ourselves any more, though I don't see how anyone would actually get inside the grounds.

James and Louis also had a fight with Scorpius Malfoy and his friends that same day in Hogsmeade. Don't tell your mum and dad about that, though, I don't want to get Louis into trouble or anything. I don't know what it was about—I never know what they fight about. It all seems so stupid.

Lily went to Hogsmeade with a boy called Zeke Lucas, who is in Rose and Al's year. It's funny, Lily was never interested in boys until about half way through last year, and then it was like she suddenly noticed them, and now she has dates constantly. I don't know how she does it—or why she wants to do it. I'd just get stressed out, not that people are queuing up to go on dates with me, so it's kind of irrelevant.

Anyway, Molly and Angharad say that Lily and James had a massive argument in the common room about it, because James told her she shouldn't be going out with boys who are older than her, and Lily told him it was none of his business who she goes out with. I kind of agree with her to be honest—I wouldn't be too happy if Fred started acting like that.

Oh, and Molly is sort of going out with Michael Dalrymple—that same boy who liked her in third year. I don't think anyone in the family has noticed, because they're all too busy paying attention to Lily.

Is that enough to keep you happy? I don't know how people keep up with all this stuff happening in their lives. Mine is completely boring, but I'm kind of glad.

You've got a picture of Butternut this time, because I accidentally drew it on the back of this letter without realising. She keeps still for longer than Pumpkin.

Lots of love,

Roxy

October 2023 ~ Sixth Year

Dear Ruth,

It's not the same at all without you. I mean, I'm really happy for you that you got into Art College, but still. I'm all by myself at our studio corner, and wishing you were here. I hang around with Angharad a lot now, because Molly is always off doing prefecty stuff or studying in the library, but obviously she can't come into the common room. Gordon and Ira still sometimes come over, but not so much. Gordon's always busy too, and I still think Ira liked you a little bit—he doesn't bother as much now you're not here.

And talking of that, I'm beginning to have Suspicions about Molly and Gordon. I haven't said anything to anyone and I'm not going to, but you're safe now you're not here anymore. I don't think anything's happened between them, and I don't think Moll is even thinking about it, so maybe I'm just imagining things, but they spend a lot of time together on prefect patrol and stuff, and he's been very sweet to her about the whole break-up with Michael. Actually I think I'm definitely reading too much into it, but I do think they'd make a good couple.

Lucy has started a drama club, and it seems to be going really well. Molly rolls her eyes whenever anyone talks about it, but I think it's kind of sweet, and it'll be fun if they do manage to put on a show.

How's Art College? You need to tell me all about it. How do you manage about hiding your magic and stuff? I can't imagine it.

I've done some more dress designs and I'm going to work on actually making them into something. I've put copies of a couple of them in for you to see, and you have to tell me honestly what you think of them.

Butternut and Pumpkin send their love.

Miss you!

Lots of love,

Roxy

March 2025 ~ Seventh Year

Dear Mum and Dad,

Thank you so much for the paint set for my birthday—it's gorgeous!

Can you believe I'm going to be doing NEWTs after Easter? Molly spends most of her spare time in the library, and all the rest of it stressing out. I'm not that stressed yet, except when I'm with Molly, and then her stress rubs off on me. I am revising, though, I promise!

Angharad is more bothered about the Quidditch team than NEWTs, which is honestly a bit of a relief, because at least that's something I don't need to worry about. She's hoping she might get spotted for a professional team, which I think she's got a good chance of, because she's really good, plus everyone knows who her mum is, which doesn't hurt. Ruth is doing exams too, and she's having an exhibition at Easter, as part of her college stuff, and she wants us all to go.

Did you know there's a new boutique starting in Diagon Alley? I saw a thing about it in the Prophet. It's going to be along at the end, in that little courtyard. Do you know anything about the people opening it? I hope they're going to be looking for people to work for them.

I've been drawing lots of pictures of the views out of the windows and stuff, because I'm not going to have them next year. Here's one of them.

Lots of love,

Roxy

A/N: What's Teddy doing in Siberia? Read Playing with Fiendfyre to find out! The fifth year letter is, like a lot of letters in previous chapters, a reference to the events of House of Cards. To find out more about Molly and Roxy's future careers and lives, though, you'll need to see Choices and Inheritance.
