Disclaimer: I own very little.

A/N: It's July 23rd. Do you know what day it is today? No? Why, it's Momo-chan's birthday! Happy birthday, Momo-chan! As should be clear by now, a Momoshiro birthday fic. Wordcount exactly 500 because I'm annoying like that.

Birthday Surprise

You wake up even more cheerful than usual because you immediately remember what day it is. The sun seems to shine brighter than usual, even, or maybe it's just because you feel so great.

Your mother has made your favourite breakfast and doesn't even complain when you have seconds and then thirds and a bit of fourths, too. Your little siblings aren't quite as annoying as usually, and as you run to your bike, you hear somebody calling out after you, "Happy birthday!"

Those are the words of the day, it seems. You hear them everywhere, from everyone. Echizen says them when he sees you, tugging his cap down as though embarrassed to even remember such a thing, and you grin at him excitedly. Everything is great and you get far ahead of Echizen, and there is no car driving towards you or a cursed racquet to spoil your day.

Everybody else remembers it too. Eiji-senpai's hug almost knocks you over, and he seems fairly impressed you actually managed to stay standing, suggesting his intention was indeed to make you fall. Oishi-senpai is less destructive, smiling even more kindly than usually. Of course he does, you think, it's summer holiday and your birthday and you're all going to have a party.

Everybody shows up, not that you're that surprised, and it's "Happy birthday" all over again, everybody says it but him, and he only says "Fsshuuu." You ignore him, though, it's fine to ignore him because he obviously wants to be ignored, and he showed up and that's the only thing you might be surprised about.

There are presents, of course, some of them of the edible kind, and those you want to start so badly it's almost irresistible, but first there's ice cream your parents pay for and then playing tennis, because playing tennis is what you all do best. Inui-senpai offers a taste of his latest juice just for you but you refuse, you just turned fourteen and don't want to die just yet.

He doesn't give you a present, and the others scold him for it, but you say it's okay and you wouldn't have wanted anything from him anyway. He hisses and says the only thing keeping you alive is the fact it's your birthday, and you grin at him and call him a coward, and in the end it takes three senpai to keep you from exchanging blows.

It's a great day and you actually win a couple of times, and Fuji-senpai says it looks like the school is going to be in good hands. In the end you head back home, happy and loaded with presents, and it isn't until then that you again remember he didn't give you anything after all. But when you reach home there's something waiting for you at the porch, and you look at the stuffed puppy with wide eyes and wonder how it got there.

Surely he couldn't have run fast enough to get past you.
