History of the Banana
Once upon a time, a man was walking through the misty rainforest of Papua New Guinea with his infant son. He had ventured so far into the forest and was now hungry. His son was even hungrier than he was, and was screaming his head off. The man knew that he had to find food and fast. He began to look around for something yummy and delicious for him and his son to eat, but he had ventured so far he couldn't see any fruit trees in sight. He decided to go farther into the forest to see if there might be a (insert fruit tree) near by. He stumbled upon a strange looking tree with what appeared to be some sort of fruit on it and him being the adventurous and daring type decided to give it a try.
He took a huge bite and spit it out because there was a nasty taste to it. He then looked at it wondering if just maybe the nasty taste came from the odd peel around the mushy part. After taking the peel off, he tried it again. "This is fantastic" he declared. The only downside to this fruit are the weird strings on it, he thought, but that can be overlooked due to the excessive deliciousness of the fruit itself. He needed to grab as many as these as he could so he could sell them to his fellow villagers. Shortly after this decision he stopped, realizing he needed a name for this new fruit.
The man was not a very creative person and came up with nothing to call it. After standing there for what felt like hours, he looked at his young son, who was surprisingly sitting in silence looking up in wonder, and said "What do you think this should be called"? His son looked down then back up at him and said "Ba-na-na". The man believed this to be brilliant and shear genius. So now and forever this strange fruit is called banana.
