Loved and Lost Again

She stared bitterly at the mutant through the woods. She knew Edward, could hear her thoughts; she didn't care. She didn't have anything left to care about. She was empty, and nothing-nothing-could fill her up again. She loved and lost Sam to Emily; she had maybe loved and lost Jacob to Renesmee. She was done loving. She was done caring. She was done feeling anything. Because in the end, love could only hurt you. If you stayed closed off from the world, kept to yourself, looked out for only yourself, and allowed only yourself to look out for you, then nothing could touch you. Nothing could hurt you. Nothing could penetrate your heart. Leah vowed right then to never love again.
