Sirens and alarms blared loudly. The noise that should have been deafening to most people was just a buzzing in Izuku Midoriya's head. The paramedics poking at his arm in order to stabilize his condition might as well have not been there at all. It didn't matter. In his mind, a single thought looped over and over again in an attempt to sink in, only to be heard again when it failed to do so.
'We lost.'
The battle against Shigaraki in Jaku City had left countless things in shambles.
The city. A mere crater where the large metropolis once stood. Cars, buildings, and any semblance of how the city looked before was nothing more than either dust or broken scrap. A testament to how much raw power the League now possessed.
The world. News of the events of the battle quickly spread like wildfire. The heroes, the ones who swore to protect the peace of the world, had failed. The few who lived in the shadows simply laughed and cheered at the news while others prayed that this was all just a dream and All Might would come and save the day. Those people that were wrong.
The Heros. It was not only the force who faced Shigaraki who suffered major damage. The heroes who fought at the Gunga Mountain Villa were savagely beaten by the League once the large villain named Gigantomachia swept through the area. Now several Heroes were either gravely injured, like Mirko, Hawks, Eraser Head, and Endeavor, missing, like Midnight and Majestic or killed, like X-less and Crust.
Now, those who remained from the fight were escorted to a hospital in order to treat their wounds. Both physical and mental ones. For now, it was all they could do…
"Damn it man. Why is this happening?" Kaminari slammed his fist onto his leg.
"Kaminari," Jiro placed her hand on the teen's shoulder. "I know your mad but-"
The electric quirk user swept her hand off his shoulder and rose to his feet. "Mad? I'm not mad. I'm not mad that everything we set out to do went up in smoke. I'm not mad that right now, while we're here sitting on our asses, the villains are out there destroying people's lives. I'm not mad Jiro. I'm pissed."
"You done," she asked.
Kaminari fell to his knees, "I'm scared you guys." He looked over to his friends who were sitting in the waiting room. "What the hell do we do now?"
Several members of Class A looked at eachother. After having most of the injuries treated, they had gathered in a private room in order to wait for news on the seriously injured. Yaoyorozu hugged herself tightly, "I don't know Kaminari-kun. It's… hard to say what we should do. If only I had-."
"Don't."
Yaoyorozu was quickly turned by the person next to her. "Shoji-kun"
"You did your best back at the Villa. Midnight placed her trust in you and frankly, There isn't another person I think who was more fit to take on that role."
The creation user hugged herself upon hearing Midnight's name, but nodded. "You're right Shoji-kun."
"Let's just focus on the now," Iida spoke up. He was met with nods and half hearted smiles from his classmates. "Ashido-san," he turned to the pink acid user. "Have you seen Kirishima-kun?"
She nodded, "Right after we got treated, he went to wait in Bakugo's room." The normally energetic girl sheepishly grabbed her arm. "He's worried considering …"
No words were needed to say what they were all thinking. They had heard how the monster trio of Class 1-A had gone to assist in the fight against Shigaraki. They had heard how Midoriya had fought one on one with Shigaraki, destroying his body in the process just to take down the villain. They had also heard how Bakugou saved Midoriya from Shigaraki's attack.
Iida nodded his head, "I see. For now we should let him rest. I just spoke with a doctor before I came here. Endevorand Todoroki are being treated as well. The former is being treated for intense burns and heat exhaustion from using his Quirk too much. The latter for both burns and hypothermia. It will be a while before we hear anything more."
"Burns and Hypothermia. Only Todoroki." Sero let out a small chuckle in order to lighten the mood. The tape user was only met with downcast looks to the floor. "Right. And what about Aizawa-Sensei?"
"He's still unconscious." Yaoyorozu answered. "He lost a lot of blood so the doctor says he'll be out for a little while longer before he regains consciousness."
"And Midoriya?" Hagakure asked.
That was the question on everyone's mind. From what they heard, the class's resident wonder-boy had gone toe to toe with Shigaraki. A few of them had managed to see him before he was wheeled into the emergency room. His arms were broken and destroyed beyond anything they had seen. Clearly he had thrown everything he had at the villain. But that wasn't enough.
"Uraraka is waiting for him," Iida answered. "She said she will let us know if something happens."
Mineta finally stopped rocking in his seat and stood up. "What are we going to do guys?! The three strongest people weren't enough. Hell, not even the number one hero was enough to stop Shigaraki. We're-." The small teen didn't even get to finish his sentence since he was slapped by Tsuyu's tongue.
"Mineta. Be quiet. Freaking out isn't helping."
"How can I not freak out? We don't stand a chance against the league now. I'm just scared-"
"I'm scared too, Mineta," Tsuyu interrupted him again. "I'm scared. I'm scared that my family is in danger. My mom, dad, little brother and sister." The frog user took a deep breath. "But, I can't do anything now. It would stupid to think I can fight the villains the way I am now. All I can do is wait and hope my classmates and teachers are alright."
That was a sentiment everyone seemed to share as they all nodded their heads. Of course many of them were worried about what was going to happen. But regardless of the situation, they needed to keep a cool head in order to think. U.A. had drilled that idea into their mind while they trained to be heroes. And that's what they were. Heroes.
Before anyone could add to the conversation, Kirishima burst into the room. "Guys," his classmates turned to him. "Have you guys seen Bakugo?"
Eyebrows went up and a few of them stood, "Weren't you waiting by his room," questioned Sato.
"I got a call from my parents so I left for a minute or two to take it and when I came back he was gone."
"What?!" Looks were shared as many of them sounded worried for the explosion Quirk user.
Denki cocked his head, "Should we go and look for him. I mean, with his injuries he couldn't get far."
Everyone seemed hesitant at what to do and Mineta asked, "You guys… You guys don't think he's going after the villains do you?"
The words of the purple haired teen seemed to echo in the room for a second. Collectively, everyone stood up immediately. "Everyone," Iida spoke loudly to everyone. "Spread out and look for Bakugo-kun. We must find him before he does anything rash." Nods were shared and the class spread out to search for their friend.
The gentle beeb and tones of the medical machines hummed in Midoriya's ears. The world slowly began to focus as he slowly opened his eyes. The first thing he noticed was the feeling of something tightly covering both his arms. A small shift of his head revealed that a thick cast was placed on his arms. He tried to move either of them, but he lacked the strength too and frankly, it felt like he would never have the strength too.
After taking a quick glance around the room he was in, a figure could be seen sitting in a seat across the room. Even with the small amount of haziness in his vision, he could tell who it was. "Uraraka-san," He said in a quiet voice.
The zero gravity Quirk user heard the quiet call of her name, quickly standing up to rush to the bedside of her friend while placing the clipboard she was looking at the foot of his bed. "Deku-kun. You're awake." She wiped away a forming tear, "You're awake… Thank goodness."
While there were several questions he wanted to ask his friend now that he was conscious, one question in particular was important to him, "Is Kacchan ok?"
"He's fine," the heroine answered. "The last time I saw him he was still unconscious, but he should be fine. Kirishima is with him and said he'd let us know if something happened. Everyone else is ok too. Iida said he would let me know about Sensei and Todoroki if something happened."
Midoriya let out a sigh of relief, "Thank goodness."
"You just woke up from a massive fight and the first thing you ask about is your friend." Tears finally began to pour out of her face, "That's so like you Deku-kun. Putting others over yourself. You really are a hero..."
"What were you reading?" he asked looking over at the clipboard.
"Oh," Uraraka's face immediately saddened. "It's a clipboard the doctor left. It… has all the injuries you got from the fight." The usually bubbly girl rubbed her eyes to wipe away the tears.
Had the situation been different, Midoriya would have reached out to his friend to comfort her. But his body was so damaged that even lifting a finger seemed like an impossible feat. So instead he said, "I'm sorry Uraraka-san."
"What?" She looked at her bed ridden friend.
The Quirk inheritor tried his best to hold back the water works to little effect, "I… I wasn't strong enough. I used everything I had and it still wasn't enough. I'm sorry. I failed. I failed everyone. And now-."
"Deku-kun, don't talk like that," She interrupted. "You did everything you could. You didn't know Shigaraki would be this strong. You did your best. Just focus on resting for now. Since we made it out, we still have a chance to beat Shigaraki." Uraraka clenched her fist, "We can do it Deku-kun."
While it was nice to see his friend believe they could still beat the Villains, a pit formed in Midoriya's stomach as he looked at his smiling friend. Even though he was awake and conscious now, his lack of strength and the general numbness that radiated through his whole body told him that something was inevitable. "Uraraka-san, I-."
Before the green hero could say anything, the door to the room slid open quickly. Both looked to the sentence and were surprised at the person standing before them. "Kacchan," Midoirya said with a weak voice.
The spiky haired teen slumped against the wall while holding his side. His whole body was wrapped in bandages save for the pants of his hero costume. Had it not been for the shock of his arrival, Midoriya and Uraraka would have wondered what was keeping the explosion Quirk user on his feet. Considering the injuries he sustained in the battle it was a miracle that he was on his feet at all.
Uraraka stood and reached to help her injured friend, "Bakugo. What are you doing here? You're injured, you should be rest-."
"Get out." Bakugo interrupted her. He pointed with his thumb into the hallway while still leaning against the door frame. "Me and Deku need to talk."
Midoriya and Uraraka seemed surprised again by his words. "What?" Uraraka looked confused and slightly annoyed.
"You heard me. Me and Deku need to talk alone. Get out."
The gravity Quirk user stared at him, "No. I'm not leaving. After what happened I-."
"Uraraka," Bakugo stared at the girl. "Get out."
Both Midoriya and Uraraka were surprised beyond words. For a second, they wondered if the person standing in the doorway was even really the Katsuki Bakugo from their class. Since their first day, be it because he didn't care or because of his ego at the time, Bakugo never called anyone in the class by their names. In Uraraka's case, it was always 'round-face' or 'cheeks'. He would always call people by a nickname derived from either their appearance or Quirk. Even during hero training, he would always use nicknames rather than anyone's hero name.
So to hear Katsuki Bakugo call her by her name, Uraraka just looked at him as if she witnessed something impossible. "It's alright Uraraka-san," Midoriya smiled weakly from his bed. "Can you give us a minute?"
There was hesitation on her face for a second as she looked back and forth between her two classmates. But she nodded weakly, "Alright." She walked out of the room but not before turning to the two. "Get some rest you guys."
Now, the two teens were alone in the hospital room with the only sound coming from the beeping of medical devices. Bakugo held his side as he dragged the chair by the door over to Midoriya's bed, slumping into it once he reached a good spot. If you were to describe a loud silence to someone, the atmosphere in the room is what you would use. Both of them knew what needed to be talked about, but both were reluctant. "Are your injuries ok," Midiorya asked.
Bakugo clicked his teeth, "Of course not. They hurt like hell. Mind your own damn business Deku."
"Right," Midoriya smiled despite his friend's harsh tone. "Thanks for saving me."
"Oi, don't go thinking I did that because I was being nice. I'm just sick and tired of you acting like a hero all the time."
Midoriya did manage to let out a weak chuckle at his friends' words, who growled in response. From an outside perspective, the relationship the two teens had was definitely hard to describe. A few may call them just classmates. Some would call them rivals. Others, who knew them well, would know they were more than friends. However as the silence crept into the conversation once again, the elephant in the room became obvious.
Midoriya decided to bite the bullet, "Kacchan. We lost." The explosion Quirk user didn't say anything. He simply stared at the floor while clenching his fist. "We lost and now Shigaraki is stronger than either of us could imagine. After all the training we did. I wasn't strong enough, even with Black Whip and Float. I failed All Might. I-."
"Shut the hell up Deku," Bakugo screamed at his friend. "Quit your crying. That's one of the things about you that pisses me off. You weren't the only one fighting out there. And don't go saying it's over or some crap." Despite the pain of his injuries, Bakugo placed his hand over his fist. "That hand bastard didn't even think we were worth killing and that's where he screwed up. Once I'm healed I'm going to go blast his ass up into a thousand pieces."
Midoriya looked to Bakugo with a smile of admiration. Even after that fight, you're still determined to win, thought Midoriya. That's the thing I always admired about you Kacchan. Your drive to win is so cool… But. "I can't feel my arms, Kacchan." For the first time in his life, Midoriya swore he saw genuine surprise on Bakugo's face. "The doctor's told me a while ago that if I broke my arms again I would suffer permanent loss of function. I used everything I had against Shigaraki and it didn't matter. Now I can't fight."
"Oi oi oi, don't give me that shit Deku." Bakugo's tone was a mixture of emotions. Anger, surprise, sadness and maybe a little bit of guilt. "We don't have time for this. Just have the doctor's fix your shit so we can get that bastard."
"The doctor's can't fix this Kacchan. The nerves in my arm are probably damaged beyond repair. It feels like my arms are metal pipes. Rigid and stiff. I can't even move my fingers much less clench my fist."
"Then what the hell was the point of your Shoot style? Didn't you make it to take the strain away from your arms." The spiky haired teen was now to the point of yelling. "Are you just going to give up? Didn't you say that you would beat me? Be the next number one hero. Didn't you say that you would be like All Mi-."
"I KNOW WHAT I SAID."
Now it was Bakugo's turn to be surprised. Surprised that the meek teen he once called worthless was raising his voice at him. I know what I said. I don't want things to end like this, but I have no choice. The only thing I can think to do is to leave it to the people who can still fight."
"What the hell are you talking about Deku?"
Midoriya turned to look at Bakugo. Meeting his intense gaze with one of his own, he said, "Kacchan, You need to take One for All."
A deafening silence swept through the room in an instant. "What the hell are you saying?"
"One for All gets stronger every time it's past on to the next user. I'm pretty sure my full power is stronger than All Might. If I were to pass it to you, it would become stronger than it was before. It's the only shot we have of beating Shigaraki. We need One for All."
Bakugo just stared into Midoriya's eyes. From what he could see, the Quirk inheritor was one hundred percent serious. And part of Bakugo didn't want to believe it. "Don't give me that shit Deku. I don't need your stupid Quirk to beat those trash villians. I'm strong enough on my-."
"WILL YOU LISTEN TO ME BAKUGO."
Again, silence erupted again as the two teens looked at eachother. "Please… You're the only one I trust to pass on One for All too. Not Uraraka. Not Iida. Not Todoroki. It has to be you. If we lose again, who knows what might happen to the world. Please… accept One for All."
A couple of seconds went by as Midoriya awaited a response. Thousands of thoughts and words were wheezing around inside Bakugo's mind while he clenched his fist hard enough to draw blood. Trying to think of a way around the whole idea. Trying to think of a reason why he didn't need the Quirk to beat one of the strongest villains the world has ever seen. Trying to think of a way for his friend to fight by his side once again…
But nothing came to mind…
After a minute of pure, agonizing silence, Bakugo relaxed his hands. Warm drops of blood running down his fingers as he nodded his head. "What do I have to do?"
Midoriya smiled a little. "Pluck out one of my hairs and swallow it whole. You need to ingest my DNA in order for me to pass on One for All to you."
"Seriously," chuckled Bakugo. "That's so fucking gross."
"I know. I nearly threw up when I had to swallow All Might's hair."
The two chuckled a bit more. Neither of them wanted things to turn out like this. Both of them had something to prove to the other. Each one wanted to prove his own strength to the other. Each wanted to reach the highest point of the hero world. And now, with the way things turned out, neither of them would get the chance to fulfill the promise they made to each other. It was bittersweet, but they both know that there was something they had to do first. Protect the world. Because that's what a hero is supposed to do.
Once the two stopped laughing, they shared one last look before nodding to each other. Bakugo reached for a strand of green hair while Midoriya repeated over and over again in his mind, 'I want to pass on One for All.' All Might had informed him after his fight with Stain that the possessor of One for All had to want the transfer of the Quirk in order for it to pass on. So he repeated the saying in his mind as he felt the tugging of his hair.
With a single strand of hair now in hand, Bakugo opened his mouth to swallow the piece. It took a second for the explosion Quirk user to swallow the hair, but he let out a breath after he swallowed. "Seriously, that's so fucking gross."
Midoriya chose not to say anything to that. Instead just focussed on the feeling of his body. In the past, he had always wondered what it would be like when he would have to pass on the Quirk to the next holder. It felt like the fire inside him slowly began to grow smaller and smaller. Even after all the work he did to obtain the power entrusted to him by his Idol, Izuku Midoriya knew that this was the right thing to do. His days as the Hero known as Deku were over.
He looked up to the new inheritor. "Promise me you'll take down Shigaraki."
"I don't have to promise anything. I'm going to blow that stupid hand guys into a thousand little pieces."
The sound of the door opening quickly stopped the teens from saying anything else to each other. Surprising them, the person to come through the door was actually a little girl. Following close behind the girl was a familiar blonde Senpai.
"Eri-chan," Midoriya smiled at the one person he had been able to save along with his senpai. "Mirio-senpai."
"Sorry to barge in like this. We saw what happened and Eri was worried about you so we rushed over here as soon as we could. How are you holding up?"
"I'm fine. I'm glad to see you too are alright."
The little girl began to cry as she tucked her face into the bedsheets. "Deku-san. You're ok Deku-san. I saw you fighting that bad guy on TV and I got so scared."
"Don't cry Eri-chan," Midoriya would have placed his hand on the girls head if he had been able to move them. "I'm alright."
"But… on the TV, I saw you. You looked so hurt. Like you did when you saved me but worse. And then I saw Mr. Scarf cut off his leg and…" The girl was sobbing like she had just experienced a terrifying nightmare.
Midoriya did his best to comfort the girl. "Don't worry Eri-chan. Aizawa-sensei is alright. The amazing doctor's here are helping take care of him. He'll be ok."
"What about you Deku-san? When are you going to go beat the big bad guy?"
Eri looked up to the hero who had saved her life and awaited an answer. Midoriya's stomach dropped when he saw the expression on the girl's face. It honestly felt like Shigaraki had punched him in the gut again. Before formulating an effective answer, Mirio took notice of the clipboard at the edge of Midoriya's bed. The blonde teen seemed surprised as he skimmed through its contents "Midoriya, is this real?" he asked from the edge of the bed. "Are… Are you even able to move your arms at all?"
Both his senpai and the little girl turned to look at him while Bakugo just looked at the floor. "No, " he replied, deciding it was best not to lie to them at this point. "I pushed myself too hard during the fight."
"No. Deku-san," Eri clecthed the sheets of the bed tight in her little hands. "But, who's going to beat the big bad guy now?"
Midoriya did his best to smile for the little girl, "Don't worry Eri-chan. Some super strong heroes are going to fight the big bad guy so don't worry."
Even with his words, Eri continued to hold onto the sheets tighter and tighter. "No… No Deku-san. NO!"
In an instant, the horn on Eri's head grew to be about a foot in length. The resulting energy from the sudden activation of her Quirk sent out a wave, blasting Bakugo and Mirio back. The former slammed his back against the wall causing his wounds to open up and the latter flew and hit his head on the back of the wall.
Now it was just Eri and Midoriya alone in the room as Bakugo and Mirio now laid unconscious. Midoriya could feel the little girl's quirk surge through his body and he called out to her, "Eri-chan you have to stop." His calls did nothing as Eri's Quirk continued to run out of control.
"NO!"
Desperately, he tried to think of a way out but there was none. He continued to call out to the girl in hopes his words would reach her but she continued to scream as her Quirk ran wild. It felt like electricity was running through his veins instead of blood and Midoriya began to fear what might happen.
"Eri-chan Please! Stop!" he called out once again.
"NO!" Another wave of energy was released again and Midoriya felt the surge of power.
"ERI-CHAN!"
Next … Nothing.
Izuku Midoriya felt as though he was floating through an empty space of nothingness. The hospital bed he was laying in had disappeared. The room itself was replaced by an endless void. The cast that covered his arms vanished as well. What happened, thought the green haired teen. What is this feeling? Am… am I dead? About a million questions shot through Midoriya's head as he floated through the void. Where am I? What happened to Eri-chan, Mirio-senpai, Kacchan.
"Midoriya…"
What is that? Is that someone calling my name?
"Midoriya."
Yeah. I can hear it, But where is it coming from?
"MIDORIYA!"
Suddenly, the void Midoriya had found himself in faded and was replaced by another room. Blinking a few times, the world suddenly became clearer. Shapes that at first appeared blurry cleared and gave shape to students sitting at their desks, staring at the green haired teen. Had Midoriya not been confused beyond belief he would have retreated and tried to hide his face. Instead he looked around, by all accounts it was just a regular classroom. Desks, students, a chalk board and window. But… something seemed familiar about the room itself.
"Hello. Earth to Midoriya."
Hearing the call of his name, Midoriya looked to the front of the room and saw a blonde middle-aged man in a red sweater and brown suit jacket tapping his finger on the podium. "Are you awake now Midoriya?"
Again, a strange sense of familiarity washed over Midoriya's mind when he looked at the man. It was like he had seen the man somewhere before. It took a second, but he realised who the person calling out his name was. "Boba-sensei," he called out, practically shooting out of his chair.
There was no doubt about it. The place Midoriya was at was his old classroom at Aldera Junior High.
Various students chuckled and murmured while the teacher seemed unamused. "Yes that's my name. Now sit back down Midoriya. You're disturbing class."
Once again, had Midoriya not been confused out of his mind. He would have reacted by blushing and burying his head in his desk. But instead he sat back down quietly and continued to look around the room again, lost in thought. What is happening? This… this is definitely my classroom from back at Aldera Junior High. But what am I doing here? The last thing I remember was being at the hospital. Am I dreaming?
While Midoriya continued to pursue this train of thought by pinching himself a couple of times, the teacher, known as Boba, cleared his throat and tapped the papers in his hands on the podium. "Alright. As I'm sure you guys know. You're all third-years now. It's time to start seriously thinking about your futures. I would hand out these future career forms, but…" With a swift motion, he tossed the paper's into the air. "I assume you all want to be heroes."
The class erupted as various students displayed their Quirks while Midoriya continued to look even more confused. An idea popped into his mind but he quickly dismissed it. There's no way, right?
He was about to linger on that thought a moment longer but a familiar voice emerged from a few desks away. "Oi, Sensei. Don't lump me in with these losers! As if I had anything like your crappy quirks."
While the rest of the class grumbled at the words aimed at them, Midoriya's eyes practically shot out of his head. Kacchan!? What is he doing here? We were at the hospital together. Did he get affected by Eri-chan's Quirk too?
He continued to pinch himself, pushing back his previous thought while Bakugo climbed onto his desk. "Shut your mouths you extras! I aced the mock test so I'm the only one in this school who's ready for U.A. I'll become the strongest hero ever and surpass All Might."
"Ah, you plan on going for U.A. as well. Right Midoriya?"
It took less than a second, the class turned to look at him and before they could make a sound, he quickly raised his hand. "Um Sensei, this may sound like a weird question but what day is today?"
Everyone seemed surprised at the question and Boba-sensei just shook his head. "Honestly Midoriya, What is with you today?" He pointed with his thumb to the edge of the board by the door. "Look, the dates right there."
We live in a superpowered society. A society where the extraordinary became the totally normal. Fantasy became reality and the impossible became possible. However, even in our superhuman society, there are things that should be impossible. On that day, I experienced one of those things. My whole life got flipped upside down as I looked at that board…
My name is Izuku Midoriya. And this is the story about how I became the number one hero.
CHAPTER ONE: END
Author's notes:
WOW. This is the first chapter of my first big story and I'm so excited to get this started.
Previously, I was under the philosophy of only having one story going at a time, but I think that in the long term this is definitely a good thing to keep things fresh.
As for the upload schedule of this story, IDK. Like i Said this story is going to be my first bug story so the post schedule may vary.
As a side note, the teacher's name is a reference to Boba Fett from Star wars. I couldn't actually find a name for the teacher on any wiki so I just made one up. I thought it was a nice nod to Horikoshi's use of Star Wars references.
For now, go check out my other stories and I will see you all next time.
