Percy POV
Camp Half-Blood
I fucking hate oracles.
More specifically, I hate the oracle of Delphi.
Yes, you heard me right. I hate the oracle of Delphi.
That oracle started this whole miserable adventure. I wish I never made those comments with Rachel.
My whole summer was turned upside down. Not literally, of course. Annabeth was my girlfriend and life at Camp Half-Blood was great. The Olympians kept their promise (surprising, I know) and allowed amnesty for children of minor gods.
Annabeth got to build the new cabins for the minor gods. She looked so proud and joyful when they were finished! It was very heartwarming to see her so cheerful.
There were now at least a hundred campers, most of them claimed, since all of the gods claimed their children before 13. Plus, many of the demigods who sided with Kronos decided to stay in Camp once their cabin was built. If recognition and respect was all it took for them to side with us, how many lives could have been saved last year?
Rachel got to live in a cave with the Oracle residing in her. The cave has giant sofas and a flat-screen TV! That must be so comfortable. Ugh, I wish I could live there. (Without the oracle in me!)
When I was with Rachel in her cave, we were talking about the mortal world and how the oracle treated her.
Rachel explained, "I can't feel the oracle's presence all the time, but I know the oracle has made its home in me."
I comforted her, but she didn't need comfort.
"I can live with it. It's not that bad, Percy." Rachel smiled regretfully, making me believe that it was a complete lie.
I brushed it off. If it was really bad, Rachel would have told either me or Annabeth.
I was stupid to not realise the future consequences when I commented, "Life can't give us any more surprises right? We've been through so much already."
Rachel laughed with me. "You're right. No more curve balls coming our way."
"The oracle is pretty quiet now. Is she sleeping or something?"
Rachel's eyes rose with shock and tried to stop me from saying more. I really should have taken her advice. (I'm too impulsive sometimes.)
"The oracle probably wants us to live in peace. She isn't saying anything anyways," I continued, naive enough to believe that the Fates would give us only one major prophecy a lifetime.
Wrong!
Immortals love playing with our lives. Are they really so bored?
I laughed but Rachel didn't reciprocate the humor, glaring murderously at me instead.
She fell down on the floor with a loud thump! I came forward to help her up, but she quickly stood up robotically.
Rachel wasn't in control of her body!
Her eyes turned green, not her normal green, but a murky, ancient green. The same colored green mist enveloped her body like a cocoon.
The oracle had taken control of her and was going to speak a prophecy!
The prophecy that would change the whole future.
Shit.
Why did I say those words? I never should have asked that question.
Rachel spoke, no, the oracle of Delphi spoke in a gravelly and raspy voice:
In the crossroads of East and West
Half-bloods meet and fight a contest
Air, Water, Earth unlock the cage
Wars break out with enemies' rage
Then sour rivals become best friends
Feud between Rome and Greece now ends
To be honest with you, I wasn't shocked at first.
Okay, I was shocked, but I wasn't terrified. I was already part of five prophecies by now, and one of them was a major prophecy.
I thought prophecies were a yearly routine. You know, they happened to everyone named Percy Jackson and who were children of Poseidon. (In hindsight, that's really depressing.)
Rachel stood up and plopped down on one of the couches, her eyes back to normal.
"Percy!" Rachel exclaimed, pointing a finger at me. "Why the Hades did you ask that question? Never say anything involving the oracle. Never tempt fate." (Lesson learned!)
Rachel sighed and I held my head down as an apology. She was acting like my mother! "Life was hard enough last year. And now you asked asked that stupid question and activated the dormant oracle. I thought we were going to have a prophecy-less year, Percy."
"A prophecy-less year? If you want that, stay away from me. I always have those," I said, trying to bring humor into the situation and to ease her anger.
Rachel laughed quietly but figured out my plan. "This is serious. Stop making me laugh." A glare followed.
I put my hands up. "This prophecy would have been spoken one way or another. Even if I hadn't 'activated the dormant oracle'," I said with finger quotes.
Rachel chuckled and rolled over to her stomach on the couch. She was off my back! For now. "Whatever, Percy. Tell me the prophecy."
I told her the prophecy word-by-word.
Rachel's expression turned serious and sat up. "I have a feeling this is a major prophecy."
What do you mean? Is it a great prophecy?" One with an enemy like Kronos?
She sighed and tilted her head, thinking. "I don't know. All I know is that it's not a normal prophecy. The enemy the prophecy is talking about is a big one."
"Oh," I said somberly.
A maybe-great prophecy, but a big enemy? Was this enemy going to be a new Kronos or someone less powerful? Or more? Ugh, there were too many variables here. This was confusing.
"We have to tell Chiron," Rachel said.
I nodded, and we left her cave. I would like to say that we walked calmly over to the Big House where Chiron was, but we ran there. That must have confused everyone passing by why Rachel and I were rushing to the Big House, but they would know soon anyways.
As usual, when Chiron wasn't training or helping other demigods, he was with Mr. D playing pinochle on the porch of the Big House. I was waiting for them to notice us since Mr. D could get in quite a mood if someone disturbed him. (The last camper who did that had to wear a tiger's tail for a week!)
Mr. D slapped down a combination of cards and shouted triumphantly, "I won! Finally, a loss for you!"
Chiron noticed the two of us and slid over his own combination of cards to Mr. D. "I'm sorry Mr. D, but it looks like I won."
The god grumbled and looked at the Long Island Sound, not even looking at the cards to see who won. Losing pinochle must have been in his ichor!
"Hmh. One day, I will win against you." It was fun watching Mr. D challenge Chiron to a game of pinochle and lose every time.
Chiron rolled his eyes and pointed in our direction, alerting Mr. D of our presence. "Oh, it's you, Peter and Rebecca. I guess you won't be needing me. See you later brats."
Every time he misspoke my name, I wanted to strangle him until he said my name right! Maybe a spell could work! I could ask the Hecate kids for a speech-corrector spell. It might not work for gods, but it never hurts to try. That's next on my bucket list!
I said, "Actually, it might interest you, Mr. D." The god turned around.
Rachel continued, "The oracle spoke a prophecy. And it's a special one."
"Fine. Let's talk in the Big House. Nobody will hear us there," Mr. D said, probably not wanting the young demigods to hear about it.
Rachel POV
After we went into the rec room of the Big House and each sat in a chair, Mr. D asked, "What's the prophecy, Pedro? I have a tight schedule this week."
Percy was about to say some snarky and offensive remark, but both Chiron and I glared at him. This was not a time to mess around, with Mr. D no less. Fortunately, Percy recited just the prophecy and didn't insult him.
At the last line, the one about Greeks and Romans, Mr. D and Chiron's face paled. He put a hand on Mr. D, who was starting to glitch. Mr. D didn't even curse or punish him and even nodded!
Why?
Oh! That's why! Roman gods had to exist!
Especially with that weird Apollo incident. There were too many coincidences for my suspicions to be wrong. But why did they hide it from us?
The two immortals looked at each other with narrowed eyes, probably having a telepathic conversation. Mr. D didn't care about normal prophecies, but he was talking with Chiron?
Roman gods did exist! I knew it. I'm going to confront one of the two later!
Percy was looking out the window at Camp, looking for Annabeth. She would be really helpful with the prophecy and the Roman gods.
Chiron looked back at us with a grim face and thin lips. "There will be a counselor's meeting about the prophecy after the campfire."
Mr. D nodded at Chiron, something to do with that telepathic conversation, and disappeared in a puff of purple smoke. The smoke tasted like wine, the rich wine like the ones my parents would drink. Everything had to be about wine for Mr. D!
Chiron smiled at us and opened the door, signalling us to leave. He muttered loudly, "Just when I thought the oracle was resting. Prophecies." Probably to confuse us.
Percy looked at me questioningly and I shrugged in response. I didn't yet want to tell Percy about Roman gods because there was a slim chance they might not exist and that my suspicions were wrong. I was going to confront Chiron first.
Once we left, I smiled so Percy wouldn't see or hear what I was about to do. "Can you ask Annabeth for advice on this prophecy? It would really be helpful."
"Oh! Good idea." Percy sprinted to the arena where Annabeth should be.
Time to confront Chiron about Roman gods existing. They had to exist!
Or was I overreacting and making a mountain out of a molehill? I heard what happened to May Castellan, and maybe I was getting some of the craziness by being the oracle!
Ok, Rachel, calm down. The only way to find the solution is to find the answer, I reassured myself and breathed deeply.
Yes, the Roman gods had to exist. One time, Apollo visited me in my cave and he acted unnatural and very un-Apollo-like. He had to be the Roman god Apollo and not the Greek one!
I was lying down in the cave and sketching some ideas for a painting. Suddenly, loud knocks banged on the door.
I shouted, "Come in!" at the same time Apollo opened the door and barged in. Usually, he waited for me to say to come in when he entered. This was the first sign of him being the Roman Apollo.
I sat up and faced him, noticing he was taller, more muscular, brighter, and had burning, not shining, golden eyes. This was the second sign.
I bowed and asked, "What brings you here, Apollo?"
Apollo glared so harshly at me with his burning eyes that I looked away so I wouldn't catch on fire. (To all you mortal readers, he can burn you alive with a snap of his fingers.) "Why do you not call me Lord Apollo? I am an important god and your protector! Treat me with respect!"
I cowered a little bit, intimidated. "You told me I could call you that months ago," I said meekly.
Apollo looked stunned for a second and shook his head. He promptly left the cave with his head down. Since he wasn't far from the door, I stuck my ear on the wall to listen to what he said.
There were some weird names that came out of his mouth. "Jupiter will have my head for this! Diana will be disappointed in me again. Why did you do that, Apollo?" Some deep breaths followed. "Ok, just act like everything is normal."
I didn't know what those names meant then, but I searched up the names and found Jupiter and Diana are names of Roman gods, the equivalent of Zeus and Artemis. The third sign!
I heard Apollo come back and I rushed to the couch and continued to sketch.
He opened the door, looking less violent and superior. That must have been the Greek Apollo!
"Anything wrong, Rachel?"
I shook my head and showed him one of my sketches. "No. Just doing this sketch about trees."
Either Apollo didn't notice or he didn't care that I noticed his mistake, but he took the time to study the sketch. "Ah, if you're going to paint this, make sure it's a laurel tree. Sacred to me and all that, you know."
I laughed and took back the sketch paper. "So, why are you here, Apollo?"
He waved his hand around and sat on the couch. "Just checking on my favorite oracle. Can't I do that nowadays?"
I rolled my eyes and continued sketching ideas, letting Apollo stay for a while. He left after 10 minutes, looking disappointed with himself.
At the time, I didn't really care about the two Apollos and I continued drawing. But now that there was a special prophecy, one that talked about Greeks and Romans, that incident was important.
Chiron walked (galloped?) out of the Big House and looked around for me.
Once he noticed me, he said, "Let's talk somewhere private, dear."
I followed him to the right side of the Big House.
I was very blunt and direct. "Do the Roman gods exist? I have a very strong suspicion, so just tell me the truth. I don't need lies."
Chiron was shocked and tried to cover it up. "What do you mean? There are only the Olympians and their subjects-"
"Cut the cheese, Chiron. I think I've met the roman god Apollo and I'm pretty sure there are other gods in Brooklyn."
He sighed and hung his head. "I will tell you the truth. But be quiet, I don't want the campers hearing about this." The campers would probably learn this from the counselors' meeting, but I let it go.
"You are right, my dear. Roman gods exist. They manifested when Rome took over Greece…"
Chiron explained how Roman and Greek gods were different (makes sense for them to be more warlike), the other Roman camp in the West (that warning about Mount Othrys to make us stay away worked), and the truth about the Civil War.
I asked, "Where is the Roman camp?"
"I don't know. My counterpart, the guide for the Romans, doesn't disclose the information. All I know is that it's close to the Pacific coast. And don't worry, the Romans don't know where our camp is."
I guess it made sense for the opposing side to not know where the camps were. Considering what happened with the Civil War. But maybe the feud that the prophecy talked about would end the hidden truths? Hopefully.
"So how do the gods live in peace? I don't think the violent Roman gods could live with the Greek ones." Chiron looked at me confused, probably thinking I knew the answer to that question.
"They are different gods in the same body."
"What do you mean?"
"They can only be Greek or Roman at once, but… how do I say this… they have the same soul. Or the equivalent to a godly soul."
"So they have multiple personality disorder?"
Chiron shook his head. "No. Don't think of them as different personalities, but as separate gods. The only similarities are that they live in the same body. And that the Romans only altered the Greek gods. Do you understand?"
I didn't really understand, but I nodded anyway. Chiron said the Roman and Greek gods were separate entities even though they're technically the same, and they had the same body or soul. Very confusing.
"Good. Now Rachel, you must not tell any demigod about this. There is a reason we covered it up: to stop bloodshed. Otherwise, there would be another war with new enemies!"
I tilted my head, confused. "But at the counselors' meeting, we're going to discuss the Romans and their camp. Everybody is going to know about it by tomorrow."
Chiron looked up and then at New York City, where Olympus and Zeus were. "You are right, I suppose. But this separation of gods has been kept for more than 140 years. Why are we combining the Romans and Greeks now?"
"It's the prophecy and fate. You can't change that, Chiron." Wow. I was the adult and I was giving advice to Chiron. The roles were reversed!
He sighed. "This secret has to be revealed. I will tell the counselors' about the Romans and Greeks. But after I tell them, what will happen? For all I know, the Romans and Greeks will be fighting against themselves again. Just like the Civil War."
"We'll make sure no infighting happens. The Greeks and Romans will work together, not against each other. Nobody wants a war you can easily avoid," I reassured Chiron.
We didn't need more demigod deaths, especially after the Titan war.
Nobody wants a war you can easily avoid.
This is the rewritten version that actually had showing, not telling. There's dialogue and thoughts! It embarrasses me to see how bad my writing was a year ago. These chapters definitely needed rewriting.
Anyways, here's the rewritten first chapter of Greek meets Roman! Hope you like it! Tell me if I have mistakes or just comment! Thanks!
Summary: The oracle says a major prophecy involving Greeks and Romans. Rachel and Percy talk about it with Mr. D and Chiron who says there will be a counselors' meeting. Rachel confronts Chiron about Roman gods and he tells the truth about the camps.
The prophecy of Seven was never introduced and does not exist.
Have a great day and let's all Mystify!
