Chapter 1: Three Years Later
It's been three years since that night at the Oscars, three years since they had to say goodbye and part ways. He enlisted back into the secret service, his day's now consisted of protecting or guarding some sort of Senator, Governor, or political figure. But when he was alone, his thoughts mainly consisted of her, he kept up with her success and what she'd been doing,
Now, she was one of the most highly engrossed actresses and singers. Not that he'd ever doubted she'd climb higher to the top, especially now with her new publicist. Yes, Katherine had been replaced by, you won't believe it, her own cousin, Elena Gilbert. Yes, there was a relation to Jeremy Gilbert, her being his older sister and all.
Elena and Caroline had grown up together, along with Bonnie, back in Mystic Falls Virginia.
While enjoying his day off, Klaus got the surprise of a lifetime. His older brother Elijah, whom he had not spoken to in over six years since he left London.
"Elijah, it's been a long time brother, how's the family these days?" Klaus spoke into the phone hesitantly.
"Niklaus, you left without saying goodbye." Elijah formally- if that was even possible, chided Klaus like one would a child, ignoring Klaus's inquiry.
Klaus rolled his eyes, his brother was always the formal one. "Yes, well. Certain circumstances back home convinced me it was time to break away from our little pack." Klaus spoke rigidly, implying at their family.
"We would have stood by you Nicklaus, always and forever, remember." Elijah's voice softened, when they were teens, even though Elijah was already considered an adult at the time, he, Klaus, Rebekah, and Kol, had made a pact to always look out for one another. They knew their father could be downright cruel and harsh, so they decided to promise each other they'd protect one another.
"And where was that loyalty whenever Mikael would constantly abuse me with his words, telling me how I should be the one dead instead of Henrik!" Klaus raised his voice over the phone, clutching the phone in anger.
"It is truly, one of the greatest regrets of my life. And no amount of apology can make up for it I know, but know that I will carry that guilt to my grave." Elijah said with promise, regret, and sadness lacing his voice.
"Now that we've gotten past all the emotional talk, what made you decide to call after all these years Lijah?" Klaus asked, wanting to step away from all the mushy talk.
"I'm engaged to be married. My fiance and I are holding the ceremony in her hometown, so all her friends and family don't have to fly all the way out to London." Elijah told him, Klaus could hear the soft smile in his tone.
"And you thought you'd call and invite me to a wedding, I never knew would have happened had you not reached out?" Klaus bitterly spat.
"I won't force you to come Niklaus. It's entirely up to you, though I should warn you. Mother and father will be in attending." Elijah warned his brother, knowing the potential damage that might be caused, especially from Mikael's end.
"I don't give a damn. I won't let that excuse for a man make me cower away like a dog with its tail between its legs." Klaus admitted. "So, where is this town that this grand celebration is to be held?"
"Mystic Falls Virginia, I'm told that Hayley's family have good connections with the town's mayor and were able to book their family mansion for the ceremony and reception." the moment Elijah said those three words Klaus felt his heart stop, not bothering to hear the rest of the details.
Mystic Falls? As in- no! No. There was no possible chance he'd see her there, last he heard she was scheduled to perform in a few cities out of state. So there was no way of her being in town at the same time as him, but the thought of that made him a bit disappointed.
"All right, brother, I'll come. When's the date?" Klaus confirmed.
"Four weeks from today, I fly in the day after tomorrow, Rebekah and everyone else will come a week before the wedding." talk about last minute, Klaus thought.
"I suppose I'll see you then, brother. Goodbye." Klaus said, hearing Elijah stop him before he could hang up.
"Niklaus, I was wondering if it would be possible for you to arrive two weeks before our family does." Elijah asked him, a bit nervously.
"How come?" Klaus asked confused.
"I was hoping that… that you would accept the role of being my best man." Elijah fumbled over the words slightly, affection and emotions weren't always their family's strong suit, and preferred to keep all that to a minimum.
Klaus was taken aback for a second, he wanted him to be his best man. Not Finn, or Kol. Him. To be honest, he was a bit touched, he thought his and Elijah's relationship was severed after he'd left.
"I'd be honored to, Lijah. I'll see you in a couple of weeks brother." Klaus gave a small smile that Elijah couldn't see, hanging up the phone.
