Hi! I am publishing the English translation of my Granblue Fantasy and Kirby crossover "Sueños atados al cielo". Please note that this translation will be slower to update than the original fic, as English is not my first language ( I'm in fact self translating this story as practice). If you notice some big errors, please notify me of them.

The characters and setting of this story belong to Nintendo and Cygames.

Update: This chapter has been revised as of February 12th, 2023.

Prologue: an unwanted Dream

–––

The universe is filled with stories. Some tell us about cosmic horrors that are beyond human comprehension. Others would rather talk about the epic achievements of legendary heroes. Others are simply content to reach the heart of anyone who wishes to hear them.

This is just one of those many stories flying around the universe, waiting to be discovered. The story of the hero of Dreamland's fateful encounter with the Singularity of the Sky Realm, as well as those who help them thrive.

–––

Somewhere in the vast expanse of space, hidden between dimensions, it exists a unique world made by islands floating under the blue sky. This place is called the Sky Realm. A land of adventure and danger, dragons and beasts of divine power, magic and wonder, where ships travel through the clouds rather than the seas.

Those who dare to make a living from the adventures that this world offers and long to discover the truth behind its legends and myths are called "Skyfarers". And in the time of our tale, two names came to mind when someone heard that word: Gran and Djeeta.

Gran and Djeeta were the twin captains of the an airship called the Grandcypher. People of all kinds accompanied them, including rulers, warriors, mercenaries, wizards, and scholars. Up until that point in time, they had saved many people and mystical creatures, travelled to many places, and defeated a long list of enemies, some of whom were capable of destroying the world. And yet, their journey was far from over.

Some beings insisted that their coexistence was an anomaly and that only one of them should exist at the same time. And even if their personalities were kind of disparate, it seemed like they were two parts of the same soul. In their inner world, the twins shared everything: hopes, joys, dreams, hardships, the mutual affection for each member of their ever-growing crew, Vyrn's love (after all, the little red dragon had raised them since they were babies), their life link with Lyria (the girl who changed their lives), their dreams...

...their nightmares.

The hydra was a recurrent one, a grim reminder of the first mistake that they made in their adventure. And one more night, though it was the first one in a long time, they were back at the moment where it all began.

A strange girl with sky blue hair and a figure as delicate as a cloud would appear in the middle of the forest on their home island. The girl, Lyria, would ask for their help, as she had been running away from the imperial guards that had held her captive since she could remember. They would defeat the guards and then fight the hydra that their captain would send to attack them. They would die. Then Lyria would bring them back to life, connecting their lives and setting the start of their dreamt journey to Estalucia, the legendary island of the Astrals.

That's what would happen if they were reliving a memory, but they were dreaming.

The outcome of that encounter was usually different in their nightmares. Sometimes, only one of the twins came back to life, breaking the other's heart. Other times, Lyria would be apprehended before she could save them, and, with their last breath, they would see the imperial guards taking her away as Vyrn cried their deaths. Despite everything, the twins raised their swords in the dream. No matter what outcome they would get this time, they would face the monster and their fears once more.

Suddenly, a dreadful feeling invaded them. They could sense that something was very wrong with that dream.

Instead of the cutting attack that had opened deep mortal wounds in their bodies, the hydra of that dream opened its mouth and shoot an enourmous fireball at them. The twins could barely process the abrupt change and braced themselves for the impact. But it never came. Instead, they were met with the most horrific scenario, one so frightening that they had never dared to imagine it.

In a painful twist, Lyria and Vyrn had used their bodies to shield the twins from the monster's attack.

"NO! GET AWAY!" both Gran and Djeeta screamed in despair.

Lyria and Vyrn were consumed by the fireball, their horrible screams of pain shaking and terrifying Grand and Djeeta so deeply that they could feel their own hearts breaking. But it was just a dream, right?

It was just a dream, and yet they could feel the heat of the fire that was burning their friends alive.

It was just a dream, and yet the smoke was filling their lungs.

It was just a dream, and yet they couldn't stop looking at the grotesque scene.

It was just a dream, and yet they couldn't wake up.

Maybe it wasn't a dream.

The twins let out a heartrending scream as they felt their very soul break apart.

A scream that didn't go unheard in the real world.

"Gran? Djeeta? What you are seeing is not real. Wake up! " Lyria shook Gran in an attempt to wake him up, pleading with anguish. Next to her, Vyrn was trying to do the same with Djeeta.

"What is going on? Why aren't they waking up?" the small red dragon asked. He was afraid and confused because the twins weren't reacting to his and Lyria's call. "Can you hear us? Snap out of it!"

Gran and Djeeta struggled in their sleep, suffering reflected in their faces. Lyria and Vyrn couldn't stop wondering what kind of nightmare they were having

Then, as sudden as everything had started, the twins became still and quiet. Lyria could feel that the shared soul of the twins was slowly withering.

"No, don't go... Please, wake up!" Lyria cried, tears running from her eyes onto the twins' cheeks.

"GRAN, DJEETA! COME BACK!" Vyrn screamed.

A drop of water landed on Gran's cheek. A second one fell on Djeeta not even a second later. They both looked up. Was it rain? No, it was Lyria. She was crying as Vyrn called their names.

"But Lyria and Vyrn are dead", their conscience reprimanded.

But then, why did the tears feel more real than the fire and the smoke?

"We couldn't protect them," that voice in their head said again

In that case, shouldn't their link with Lyria have taken them too? And what about Vyrn's voice? They could hear it so clearly.

"You have failed," that voice they couldn't recognise stated.

Gran and Djeeta felt like they had just awoken from a trance. They exhaled deeply in relief, the terror and stress of the nightmare fading away. It was all a dream in the end. How could it affect them that much?

The twins looked around them. They were in a place that was oddly similar to the surface of the Moon, but the space surrounding them was totally different from the one they had seen on their visit. Also, their blue planet was nowhere to be seen. Also, their blue planet was nowhere to be seen.

"Something about this smells fishy," the twins said at the same time.

"Jinx! You now own me a dessert," Djeeta laughed at her brother, who rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"Does this seem a good moment for joking, sis? We don't even know what this place is!"

Whatever Djeeta was going to reply was interrupted when they noticed that they weren't alone. An ominous presence could be felt in the air.

"Who is there?" Gran menacingly asked as he drew his weapon, adopting a back-to-back fighting stance with her sister.

"Is this your doing, Belial?" Djeeta accused the usual suspect, pointing her sword up to the strange sky.

The presence vanished without giving them an answer. The twins looked at each other, confused. It couldn't have been Belial, as he would have come out to taunt them immediately. But then, who or what was behind that strange dream?

As the moon's surface, along with its strange sky, started to fade away, Gran and Djeeta knew it was time to wake up.

When they opened their eyes, the first thing they saw were tears in Lyria and Vyrn's eyes.

"Thank goodness," Lyria said, relieved, hugging them tenderly.

"We were so worried," Vyrn added, joining in the hug. "Are you okay?"

"We are fine. It was just a nightmare" Gran calmed them down."But it felt so real."

"Way too real," Djeeta added. "And we weren't alone."

"What do you mean?" Vyrn asked with concern.

"There was something there. I think it wanted to trap us in the dream," she explained.

"That is so strange and kind of scary. We need to talk to Phoebe about it," Lyria suggested after thinking about it for a bit.

Gran and Djeeta agreed. Phoebe was the primal beast of dreams. If anyone aboard the ship could discover the true nature of that nightmare, it was her. Maybe she could even identify the strange being that had lurked around them in the dream.

At least, that's what they hoped.

–––

Somewhere between existence and non-existence, the frontier between reality and dreams, a conscience pondered about the dream it had just manipulated.

The Singularity of the Sky Realm was something that he hadn't even considered in his original plan. However, the nightmare he had sent had provided useful information about it. If he played his pieces well, the Singularity's existence would end up working in his favor.

About the other obstacle... If everything went according to his calculations, the Star Rod wasn't going to be a problem. And without the legendary artifact, the resolve and strength of the one who once was able to wield it and destroy his body wouldn't matter. Yes, revenge was going to be so sweet. In just a few moments, he'd be free to roam reality once more.

And then the sky and the stars would tremble in fear.

At the same time, in a faraway world, a pink puffball awoke from his blissful sleep when a butterfly landed on his head through an open window. As he stood up (which made the butterfly flutter away), the little puffball yawned and opened his blue eyes, full of hope and joy. Then he looked out the window and smiled: it was a beautiful morning outside.

A new day had begun in Dreamland and Kirby was ready for a new adventure.
