Chapter 1: Rocks
The late October night brought a cold temperature to the Hogwarts grounds, but that did not stop Teddy and Victoire from walking along the edge of the Forbidden Forest, well past the hours that any student should be out. Being in separate years and houses, the two life-long friends hadn't been able to be around one another as they had originally hoped now that they were both at Hogwarts. But, chilly nights like this served as perfect opportunities for the two of them to talk about anything and everything.
"We were learning how to make dreamless sleep draught in potions today," started Vic. "And Walter Lorse spilled it all over his robe, but he made it too strong- you see- and he got it too close to his nose and passed out in the middle of the room just from the fumes."
"I'm sure Slughorn was really happy about that one," laughed Teddy. "Poor sod's on his second to last term before retirement and he had to peel a first-year off of the floor."
"I suppose I'll never be going to one of his Christmas parties," Victoire bemoaned mockingly.
"Heard those suck," said Teddy. "The one Hufflepuff prefect, Jeremy Corner- the one with the thick red glasses- he went last year and said that Slughorn played some ancient classical muggle music for three hours straight."
"Can't be any worse than the shit you play though, can it," said Victoire, aiming a jab into Teddy's side.
"I'll have you know that the Weird Sisters are the greatest musicians of our generation," Teddy argued back.
"They're not of our generation, idiot, "Victoire pointed out. "They're all in their fifties."
"That doesn't mean they still can't produce great music," argued Teddy.
"It clearly does, seeing as they haven't made good music in…ever," said Victoire.
Teddy opened his mouth to reply when he felt a raindrop fall on top of his head. He turned his face towards the completely black sky and felt another fall onto his forehead; then other, and another, and another. Within a few moments, rain was falling so hard the pair could barely see in front of them. Their robes hung heavy on their bodies, completely soaked. The sodden ground beneath them squished and sunk underneath them as they ran along the edge of the Forbidden Forest, trying to shield themselves from the rain with the leaves of the large trees, as they ran towards the path by Hagrid's hut that would back towards the castle.
Thunder clapped loudly above them as lightning briefly lit up the way. There, a glimpse of Hagrid could be seen carrying some cages into his house, attempting to shield them from the rain. Great.
Teddy seized Victoire's wrist and pulled her forcefully into the trees, and together they ran into the forest.
"Teddy," Victoire tried to protest.
"Hush," Teddy ordered in a whisper.
"What was that for," Victoire whispered.
"I saw Hagrid outside," Teddy explained. "He would've caught us."
"Would he really be that upset by it," Victoire shrugged. "I mean, Uncle Harry and Uncle Ron said that they used to sneak out to talk to Hagrid all of the time."
"Still, I'm not taking any chances," said Teddy. "Do you realize how many house points we'll lose? This early on too!"
He looked around to survey his surroundings. While the large trees were providing some shield to the rain, it was still managing to soak them. At least they could see around them now. He looked down at his feet, which were sinking further into the muddy ground below him.
However, next to his left foot saw an oddly shaped stone embedded into the thick mud. It was in the shape of a perfectly chiseled diamond. Teddy reached down to pick it up before turning it around in his hand to examine it. There were runes carved into the sides of it. Maybe he could bring it back to the castle and translate them with his Ancient Runes textbook.
However, he was snapped out of his planning when he heard a twig snap from behind him. Both he and Victoire snapped their heads around before spotting several white blurs coming closer to them.
Suddenly, the prospect of detention didn't seem that bad, and together they ran towards Hagrid's hut. As they were passing the old Magical Creatures Professor's house, Teddy's sleeve of his robe got caught on the last metal cage that Hagrid was to bring inside. Hastily trying to disentangle himself so as to not get caught, Teddy jostled with the cage to free himself just as the next clap of thunder echoed and the spark of light hit the cage.
Then everything went black.
