Lilo Pelekai wasn't like any other six-year-old girl, living in a 2002 Hawaiian small town. You know how kids are often full of energy, competitive and, undoubtedly, spoiled brats, as people often call them? Lilo used to have those characteristics.
Only two years earlier, she had three friends: Yuki, Elena and Teressa. They were very supportive of her outcast behaviour, and accepted differences. Sadly, the girls were way more relatable to that one girl no one wanted to hang out with, because she didn't want to hang out with anyone.
That was, surely enough, Mertle Edmonds. Considered to be the meanest girl in town and probably the youngest child with daddy issues. The very first reason she was a bully. And you can probably guess her one and only target. That's right, it was Lilo.
She'd often start her insults wth, "Hey, Weirdlo". That was her official insult name for her. Then, Mertle would rant on about Lilo being a weirdo and a freak and how scared or disgusted or what not she was.
Luckly, Lilo had the other three to defend her. Until...that one stormy night her parents went for a drive. Lilo had a strangely dreamless sleep and woke up feeling as though she had a nightmare. Something was very wrong. Like she sensed that nothing was going to be the same again.
And it wasn't. All she felt ever since then was depression. That feeling that nobody supported her except her sister. The fact her friends were no longer her friends and they started hanging out with her one and only enemy, her bully.
She wanted to confront her, take them back. But, she couldn't. That harsh insulting voice...those blue glasses... she looked like a nerd and it made Lilo feel stupid and vulnerable. Mertle Edmonds made her feel miserable.
So there she was, once again, walking to her hula class in her regular blue flipflops and a red dress with white leaves. Knowing it was yet another hard day for her.
