(Prologue, many, many years ago)
It had been a long night and a sparkling Optimus woke, as he was thirsty. He carefully climbed out of his bed hoping to find a drink. But as he made his way towards where fuel was kept, he heard voices. It didn't take the small, young bot long to realize it was the voices of Lancex, his older brother, and their father, Senitinel Prime, arguing. Fearing he would be next and also wanting to know what was going on, Little Optimus found a place to hide while listening.
"I told you flat out, Father, I don't want to be Prime. I don't want to lead" a then 14 year old Lancex told his father, being very headstrong.
"It isn't your choice, Lancex. It is so decreed by Cybertronian law that the oldest sparkling of the Prime will become Prime. You don't get a choice" Sentinel bit back. He was frustrated as the older Lancex got, the more stubborn and hardheaded the youngling became.
"I always have a choice. And I choose never to follow you!" Lancex shot back, his youngling arrogance and bravado coming forth.
"You don't have that luxury" Sentinel barked as he noticed Lancex head for the door. "You leave, you are officially disowned and never allowed to return."
Lancex was hurt by that but he refused to show it. "Better to be disowned than be something I am not" Lancex retorted angrily. Sentinel, angry, stormed off. If his stubborn-afted son wanted to be this way, then things were going to change. Sentinel would focus on his other son.
Lancex sighed and then heard a noise. He turned around and was stunned by what he saw – his precious younger brother in tears. It was obvious the young sparkling had heard the argument and Lancex felt awful. "Don't you love me?" Sparkling Optimus asked, tears in his optics.
Lancex leaned down. "I love you with all my spark, brother, but staying here will snuff my spark out. You must let me go. Trust me. When I am big enough and you are too, I will return to you" Lancex said, not knowing if it would come true, but hoping it would.
"You mean it?" Little Optimus asked. Lancex nodded. Optimus hugged his brother and then watched the older bot leave, tears still in the little ones Optimus.
Lance gave one last piece of advice, "Optimus, promise one thing – you will never let them force you to be something you are not" Lancex shouted from a distance and little Optimus nodded, as he wanted his older brother to be proud of him. Optimus continued to watch until he could barely see his brother anymore, and then went to his room, to cry himself to sleep.
Once Lancex was far enough away, he sighed. This running away was harder than it seemed. He was tempted to go back, if only for Optimus sake, but then a strange bot appeared. "Who are you?" Lancex asked, confused.
"My name is Slugbug, and Primus has sent me to you. Your presence is required elsewhere" Slugbug said cryptically. Trusting this strange bot, Lancex nodded. He couldn't miss what he never had. And at that moment, Lancex no longer existed in the realm of the transformers but in another realm completely.
Unknown to all, this traumatic departure had deeply affected Optimus in ways even the bot himself wouldn't understand until he someday met his brother again- if that ever happened.
