CHAPTER 1
You know? I was a good girl... mostly. I'm not saying I didn't break the law when I had to. But, I never hurt anyone. Not... not until HE found me. If he had taken his shot when I was alone, I would be dead now. But, he bided his time and followed me home. Followed me to the rundown, abandoned house that I and my younger sister were squatting in. Being a freak, I had known that being caught by one of THEM was a real possibility and the thought was always foremost on my mind. But, I had my little sister, Molly, to think about. She was only 9 and she depended on me to watch out for her.
"Hey Maggie!", Molly squealed excitedly as I pushed open the old squeaky door and stepped inside. She came running at me and slammed into my gut, shoving me back against the door. "I'm so glad you're home!
"Glad to see you too, Mol!", I wheezed, trying to draw air back into my lungs. I smiled at her innocence. She always greeted me the same way, no matter how long I'd been gone. I would never get tired of having the wind knocked out of me when I got home!
"What did you get?" Even though we were alone, Molly whispered the question at me like she wanted to make sure nobody overheard. I reached into the pockets of my jacket and pulled out 2 sandwiches in plastic containers in one hand and two cans of soda in the other. Her face fell into a pout when she saw what I was holding and she folded her arms in front of her chest. "Sandwiches again?!"
"Look, Molly!", I groaned in frustration. "If I thought I could get a job without risking anyone finding out what we are, I would! But, you and I both know what happens to shifters when they try to live normal lives!"
"Yeah, I know!", Molly huffed, flopping down on her mat on the floor. "Hunters get them." The lantern sitting next to our pallets lit up one side of her face and cast the other into shadow. My heart broke for her that she would never be normal. Would never have that apple pie life that everyone else took for granted. "I wish mom was here", She mumbled after a long silence.
"WELL, SHE'S NOT!" Molly flinched at the hardness in my tone. I cringed at my own ill tempered response. It came out way harsher than I'd wanted it to. But, what happened to our mother was the very reason I couldn't risk mingling with humans any more than I had too. She screwed up and got caught shifting. A hunter got involved and that was all she wrote. So I stole what we needed to survive and stayed off the grid as much as possible. I wouldn't let what happened to our mother, happen to Molly. She was all I had. "I'm sorry, Mol. I know how cooped up you must feel." I sat down next to her on her mat and wrapped my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to my side.
"You never let me go outside, Maggie! I think I'm gonna go crazy if I have to stay in this house another day!" I sighed at the dejected tone in her voice and squeezed her tighter.
"Well, I could take you to the park tomorrow. How does that sound?" She looked up at me with wide eyes and smiled. I so missed that smile!
"Really?! You... you're gonna take me out?!" She threw herself at me, wrapping her arms around my neck, knocking me over backwards. "THANK YOU, MAGGIE!"
"You're welcome!", I said, laughing. She needed to feel normal for at least a little while. Hell! We both did! After a moment I pushed her off of me and stood up, brushing the dirt off my pants. "Ok, I'm gonna go get outta this skin and get cleaned up, ok?"
"Good! I don't like that body on you, Maggie", Molly said with her nose scrunched up like she smelled something foul. I didn't either. I was so not into the middle aged, black guy that I was wearing. I didn't mind the color so much, but I didn't feel right as a man. The extra body parts were just too... ugh! I shuddered at the thought of having to rip them off! By the time I got back to our mats, Molly had already eaten and was sound asleep under the covers. Shifting took a lot of energy, so I wolfed down my food and called it a night.
Sometime during the night, I was woken by warm air wafting across my face. Still being half asleep, I thought vaguely that I had left a window open. But then I remembered that it had been chilly out when I got home, so it couldn't have been an open window. Then I noticed a heavy weight sitting on top of me and I finally opened my eyes. At first I couldn't see a thing, I had turned the lantern off to conserve the fuel. But, after a moment, I could just make out the silhouette of a head hovering above me, blowing hot breath in my face. It was like a shadow had come to life and was sitting on my stomach. My whole body went taunt with fear. Was this a dream? Was I dreaming?
"Wha...mmph!" My question was cut off by a large hand being slapped over my mouth. The shadow raised a finger to it's lips as the blank face loomed over me. I suddenly felt something sharp being pressed into my throat and I couldn't help the gasp that came out.
"Shhhhh..." The shadow turned it's head and looked down at my sister, sleeping peacefully beside me and I started to shake with real fear. I had to give this thing whatever it wanted so it wouldn't hurt my sister. " I saw you...", the thing that I could now tell was a man whispered breathily in my face. "Through the bathroom window." OH, GOD! What did this psycho want?! "I saw you shift."
"NNN!", I tried to protest behind his hand as I shook my head frantically in denial. He just chuckled in my face, but his laughter stopped suddenly and he squeezed my face tighter. "Don't lie to me, Bitch! I know what you are! You think I haven't ganked your kind before?!" He shook my face as he snarled quietly. "DON'T. FUCKING. LIE!" I stared up at the fathomless, black hole of a face in shocked horror. OH FUCK! I should have seen it coming! I knew it was too good to last. It was my worst nightmare come true! A hunter!
A hunter had finally caught up to me!
