The trip from Longbourn to Pemberley took three days. Isabella was daily more and more delighted with her 'Papa' and was very loving with him. Darcy quickly got used to the girl's displays of affection and even encouraged it himself.
As they approached Pemberley, he asked the coachman to stop at the top of the hill where the view of the house was completely visible; he helped Elizabeth and Isabella down and he walked hand in hand with the two most important women in his life so they could see their future home from this vantage point.
Isabella opened her eyes wide when she saw the beautiful house, surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, including a garden and a lake with a fountain in front of it. Very excited, she asked, "Papa, is that really going to be my home?"
"Yes, do you like it, Bella?"
Bella nodded, "Mommy, we're going to live in a palace..."
They got back into the carriage and a few minutes later, they arrived at the main entrance of the house where Mrs. Reynolds and the rest of the servants were lined up, waiting for them.
Mrs. Reynolds, seeing Mrs. Darcy, immediately remembered her. She was the same young lady who, years before, had visited Pemberley with her relatives and Mr. Darcy had seemed as if he were in love with her...
Immediately they went up the stairs to their respective rooms and Bella, very curious, stopped to look at the portrait of Darcy that had been painted when he turned twenty-one, and the one of Georgiana from when she entered society. Georgiana had her hair up, adorned with a diamond tiara, and she was wearing a beautiful white dress.
"Mommy, look at Papa. Who is that pretty girl? She looks like a princess."
"She was my sister. Her name was Georgiana and she died a few years ago," Darcy answered sadly.
"She died just like my other papa..."
Elizabeth squeezed his hand gently and they continued up the stairs.
The first thing they did was go to Isabella's room with Mrs. Watson. Isabella had never seen such a beautiful room. Everything was pink and yellow. There was a small tea set on top of a child-sized table and chairs, a bookcase full of fairy tale books, two pink armchairs, and several dolls.
Mrs. Watson stayed with Isabella putting away her other toys and clothes, and they agreed to meet in two hours for dinner.
As soon as they entered Darcy's bedchamber, the gentleman desperately began to kiss Elizabeth and, in a few minutes, they were both naked. After they made love, as Elizabeth rested her head on Darcy's chest and he stroked her hair, she curiously commented, "You know I have no complaints when you're so passionate, but I can tell there's something bothering you. "
"I can't hide anything from you."
"I don't want secrets between the two of us." She gently kissed his lips.
He sighed. "Sad memories from the past came to mind when I looked at my sister's portrait."
"I imagine you miss her very much, and probably always will."
"It's not just that, Elizabeth," he sighed. "Perhaps if I had married you years ago, Georgiana would still be alive."
"Don't say that, it wasn't your fault that she died giving birth. It was destiny, and there's nothing you could do."
Darcy shook his head. "Sometimes I think she got married so that I would be free to find you and marry you. More than once she asked me about you, and I told her we had lost touch. Although I never told her, she figured out the reason I had to sacrifice my happiness was that I thought it would hurt her chances of a good marriage."
"I thought she had married for love?"
"Perhaps my sister was in love with her husband, and Mr. Willow did have a great deal of interest in her…" He sighed, "But I find it very hard to believe that he was in love with her. Three months after my sister's death, he married a lady he had known for years and seven months later they had a child."
Lizzy's eyes widened, and Darcy continued, "I think Mr. Willow married my sister mainly because she had £30,000, and I suppose he had some small affection for her. However, the few times I met Georgiana after her marriage, she didn't seem very happy. It's ironic that despite all the difficulties your family went through, your sisters have married men who love them and are satisfied. You had a happy marriage and have a wonderful daughter. I'm sure my sister was not content in her marriage, and I was tremendously unhappy during those years."
Elizabeth hugged him tightly. "You shouldn't think about the past anymore because, unfortunately, both Georgiana and Lydia are gone and will never come back. We can only think about the future while remembering the good things that have happened. I love you William…"
In a very short time, and with the help of Mrs. Reynolds, Elizabeth took the position of mistress of Pemberley. Darcy added a small desk in his office so that Elizabeth could work with him. In Pemberley, the sound of the piano was heard again; laughter and children's voices were in the corridors...
