Diana Prince was rummaging through her luggage for another pair of shoes. She had left her other pair at the park. She hadn't thought about it until she was back in her hotel room. She had other things on her mind and just didn't notice. Until now. Until she needed her shoes to finish dressing for the interview. An interview she now had absolutely no interest in. Other thoughts kept intruding on her.
There was no way that Superman could possibly have a secret identity too, she was sure. How could he hide that face, or that curly lock of hair that she had the damndest urge to straighten when she even thought about it? She dismissed the idea. Not possible. Unless he wore a mask in that other life, he would be recognized immediately.
Would it be rude to try to end this meeting before dinner was served? Yes, it definitely would, so she would have to grit her teeth and bear it. At least it was a Chinese restaurant. She loved Chinese food. It seemed that Kent did too, since it was he who chose the place. Also on the plus side, the restaurant was within easy walking distance from her hotel, which meant that she had an extra few minutes to find---ah, there they were, that other pair of shoes!
Thinking about Superman again brought an involuntary smile to her lips. She definitely felt a pull towards him for some reason and she was almost sure he felt the same thing towards her. That was odd. She'd seen attractive men before but never thought twice about them. Some of them had almost been as good looking as he is. It must have been that smile. Yes, that was definitely it. It was…shy and almost boyish. It was a very strange smile for a man as powerful as Superman. Wonder Woman had met powerful men before, and of all the words she could use to describe them, "shy" wasn't one of them. "Arrogant" and "self-centered" ranked high on the list, but she sensed none of that with this superman. Of course, their meeting was very brief, but she prided herself on the accuracy of her first impressions of people. She was almost never wrong. As she adjusted her shoes she wondered if she would ever get another chance to talk to him. They would almost have to meet again at some point, wouldn't they? What was surprising was that it had taken so long for the first meeting.
A final check in the mirror showed a woman notable only for her above-average height. Hair swept back into a very unstylish bun would have accented her high cheekbones and clear complexion if it wasn't for the thick, large brown glasses on her face; glasses that grabbed the attention of anyone looking, which, of course was the point. Once she had overheard a colleague attempt to describe her to someone else. The description was short. "Tall, big brown glasses. You can't miss her." Exactly how Diana Prince wished to be seen.
She had resisted the temptation to dress too haphazardly tonight though. It was dinner, and it was an interview, so she went with a loose blouse and loose blue jeans with belt. Okay, she wasn't too casual. Not knowing Kent, she didn't want to seem anything but nondescript, and since she'd been in America she found that the easiest way for her not to attract unwanted attention was to wear drab, loose clothes. It was amazing how well, it seemed to work. At her 'normal' job, she had no choice but to wear business attire, but it was very conservative clothing she chose, with muted colors and styles. Nothing to attract attention there either.
Diana knew she was beautiful. That was the way she was created and she had no shame of it. However, she also knew that of all the gifts she received from the gods, her beauty was the least important, and many times the most aggravating. Men didn't seem to believe that a beautiful woman could actually think or have opinions that mattered. It was a misunderstanding that she'd had to deal with too many times. And, it was necessary to hide that beauty if she was to have any chance of keeping her Diana Prince persona separate from her Wonder Woman one. It was a sometimes difficult balancing act, but it was necessary in order to do the work that she was sent here to do.
With a sigh, Diana grabbed her purse on her way out the door, resolving to make this as quick a dinner as possible.
