The scream pierced the quite night air, jolting the two mutants apart. Instinct kicked in, and they both went rushing into the house, and up the stairs. Following the blood curdling scream, Jesse fear intensified realizing the sounds were erupting from the room Mindy had pointed out as her own earlier this evening. Reaching the door Jesse went in low, preparing to launch himself at whoever was attacking the little girl. Once inside the room, Jesse was too busy looking for intruders to realize their was no one else in the room. Lexa, who had been just one step behind Jesse the whole way, ran over to the bed, and took the still sleeping little girl into her arms.

"Shush, it's okay baby, auntie Lexa is here. No one is going to hurt you. " Lexa soothed as the little girl started to wake up. "It's okay honey, it was just a bad dream."

With the buzz of adrenaline slowly leaving his system, Jesse approached the bed. It had been such a long time since he had felt fear like that. The fear he experienced with mutant x was completely different. With his teammates, he knew they could protect themselves, but Mindy was just a sweet, innocent little girl. As he knelt down next to the bed, and ran his hand soothingly through the little girls curly hair, calming himself as much , as her.

"It's okay Mindy, we won't let anything harm you." After a few minutes of being held in Lexa's arms, and Jesse stroking her hair, the little girl finally relaxed, and fell asleep. Lexa slowly lowered the little girl back into bed, while Jesse pulled the sheets up around her. Leaning down, Jesse softly brushed a kiss on her forehead, then stood up beside Lexa. They both stood there for a moment silently looking down at the now peacefully slumbering child, before quietly walking out of the room.

Once outside the room, both adults felt the tension rise up between them, as the remembered what almost happened outside on the swing.

"Lexa…"

But before Jesse could say more then her name, Lexa interrupted him. "I'm really tired jess, and I think I'll head off to bed now." Turning on her heal, Lexa made a beeline for her room, for the moment not caring that it looked as if she was running away. She had let Jesse see too much of her today. I let him see me scared in the car, and then I let him see me upset in the kitchen. What the hell was I thinking!! She silently cursed herself, as she opened her door and stepped into her room. Closing the door behind her, she turned, and leaned her head against the cool wood of the door. He almost kissed me. She thought to herself. Even just remembering it she felt her heart beat pick up again. The look in his eyes as he slowly lowered that beautiful mouth towards her, had momentarily stunned her, making her forget who they both were, and how come this could never happen. All she had though about, was how much she wanted to feel the weight of his lips against her own, the slide of his tongue, the scrap of his teeth, the feel of those agile hands moving across her face, and the silkiness of his hair running through her fingers.

"Oh my god," moaned Lexa, the cool wood on her forehead, doing nothing to stop the fire raging through her veins. Pulling her self away from the door, Lexa headed towards the bathroom, deciding the only thing besides Jesse that was going to get her to sleep, was a shower.

Outside Lexa's door, Jesse smiled. When they had left Mindy's room, he had wanted to talk about what happened outside, before they had been interrupted by the little girl's screams. But Lexa, took off to her room, like the devil himself was on her tail. Jesse had stood rooted to the spot, stunned by her uncharacteristic departure. By the time his shock had worn off she was already in room, with the door closed. Not ready to be dismissed that easily, Jesse had advanced on her room, with ever intention to continue the conversation they had not even really started. Lifting his hand to knock, Jesse hear the faint but distinct sound of Lexa moaning, as what sounded like her head lightly hit the door. Jesse's lips curved up as realization hit him, she had been just as effected by their "almost-kiss" as he was. Then as he heard the shower start, Jesse chuckled to himself as he headed towards his own room, and waiting shower.

"So if we can undo the change the shadows made to Marlow's DNA, then we have a cure?"

The blond feral smiled fondly at her teammate. He was trying really hard, but medical science just was not his thing. "It's a little more difficult then that Brennen. With the original Virus, it attacked so quickly that mutant cells had no time to regenerate. So when we took Marlow's DNA, we were able to harvest those regenerating mutant cells and counter the virus. But now…" throwing up her hands, Shalimar walked into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge. "I don't even understand the rest. But basically this new virus destroys every mutant cell it touches. There is no way to save the cells. So we have to find a way to kill the virus, before it starts to inflict damage."

Brennen, who had followed Shal into the kitchen, was busy raiding the shelves for something to eat. The day had been an other hard one, long, busy, boring, and unsuccessful. The kind that drained you of energy, knowledge, and worst of all, hope. Deciding that both he and Shal needed something to take their minds off the lab, virus, and the yet to be discovered cure, Brennen stopped looking through the selves and turned to his teammate.

"How about we go out to dinner? And maybe catch a movie?"

Shalimar, who had finished her drink and was now rooting through the fridge for food, turned and looked at Brennen in surprise. It was rare for him to ask her out, all by her self. Normally they did stuff with the team or just stayed in. This assignment must be effecting him more then I thought, the feral mused to herself. Looking closer at him, she noticed the signs of exhaustion and stress around his eyes and mouth, making it look like he had been working for weeks, instead of only two days. Smiling, Shal closed the fridge door, and stared walking towards her room, Brennen behind her.

'That's a great idea Brennen, you can pick me up in 30 minutes." Stopping at her door Shalimar gave him a saucy smile, "But I get to pick the movie. Deal?"

"Deal" Brennen agreed, shaking the hand she offered in confirmation. "So try and be ready in 30 minutes, okay."

Shalimar, slightly offended by his remark, rolled her eyes at him, and closed the door.

"30 minutes, okay!" Brennen shouted through the door, before he walked towards his own door, happily humming a little song under his breath.

Forty minutes later, Shalimar still stood waiting for Brennen, in the computer lab. Deciding to kill some time so that Mr. Universe could get ready, Shal decided to check in with Jesse, and see how things were going.

"Jesse, are you there?" spoke Shalimar into her comlink. "Come on Jess, answer me!"

"What you want?" a groggy voice replied, causing the feral smile.

"oh nothing in particular, just to see how you are."

"You called me at," the molecular, squinted to get his tired to focus on the digital clock besides his bed, "5 in the morning to ask me how things are?"

Shalimar laughed at the surly tone in her friends voice. "Sorry Jesse, I forgot about the time difference. But how are things going?"

Realizing he probably would not get back to sleep, Jesse decided he could still run on the 3 hours he had got, and sat up in bed, swinging his feet onto the floor. "Everything's going fine. Actually thing are going great!" Jesse responded, a devilish smile stealing across his face. "This place is beautiful! All mountains, river, forest, and wide open fields. You would just love it Shal, too bad you are stuck in the city, in a lab none the less."

Now, it was Jesse turn to smile, as his friend, mumbled something surly.

"Shal!" Jesse teased in a mock horrified voice, "you kiss your mamma with that mouth?" they both chuckled, before Jesse went on to continue, " Lexa, and I got here early last afternoon. The people we are staying with are great," he stated thinking fondly of Mindy and Anna. Shalimar heard the open affection in his voice, that normally was only used for family and felt her interest level rise. "and the house is beautiful. Today Lexa, and I will get a tour of the stables and paddocks. We will also more then likely be meeting Cat today, so I better go make myself beautiful!"

Shalimar laughed, but was not ready for the conversation end there yet. There was still one subject that Jesse had not brought up, and that spoke volumes to the perceptive feral. "How is Lexa? Are you two getting along well?"

At the sound of Lexa's name, Jesse's mind leapt back to earlier this morning, on the porch. "Lexa's fine, and we are not having any problems getting along." replied the blond mutant, not realizing that his voice had just taken on a husky quality that did not escape Shal.

"Okay well have a nice day, Jesse."

"Night Shal."

"Jesse…" Shalimar hesitated, trying to think of how to say what she wanted to. "I love you, and take care."

"Love you too." as Jesse disconnected his comlink, and stood to stretch, he had a feeling that Shalimar hadn't just been talking about the mission.

Back at sanctuary, Shal was getting a little annoyed at being keep waiting, so she tried to page Brennen through their comlink. When he did not respond, Shalimar became concerned and headed towards his room. As she approached his room, her pulse settled down as she sensed Brennen in his room. Knocking softly, she opened the door, and stopped dead in the door way. There was Brennen, in a pair of mouthwatering stressed jeans, and a beautiful slate gray collared shirt. His hair was styled, his face cleanly shaven, and he had put on that cologne that drove her wild. And he was dead asleep, on his bed.

Walking towards him, Shalimar took the opportunity to study every angel and plan of his face and body. After a few moments, she bend down and pulled of one of his shoes, then the other. She took the blanket from the foot of his bed and spread it over him. Then in a move that had mirrored Jesse's with Mindy, Shalimar bend down and placed a kiss on his forehead. Turning the blond feral headed out of the room. Stopping at the door, she turned off the lights and softly whispered "good night love, see you tomorrow. But I still get to pick the movie next time we got out."
