{|} Prologue: Closing One Book... {|}
"Are you sure you don't want me to go with you; to make sure you'll make it safely to the Teleportation Station?"
"What am I, a small child or something? Seriously, you're starting to act like some overprotective mother hen, Kazuma. It's really annoy..."
I stop as I see the look on his face. There was real concern present there, something I hadn't expected to see. There was no way he could know what I was really thinking here but could he somehow sense it. Did he have an inkling as to my true intentions?
"Kazuma, I'll be fine. It's not that long of a walk from the mansion to Axel and from the eastern gate to the Teleportation Station. No one would dare try anything funny with me. After all, I do have quite the reputation in case you've forgotten."
We both laugh at that which makes my heart and soul feel some degree of comfort. Once that had passed, Kazuma says-
"Yeah, you're right. I don't know what's gotten into me. For some strange reason, I just have this dark foreboding feeling over you going alone. Like if I let you leave, I'll never see you again. Crazy, huh?"
"Maybe a little bit. Like I said, I'll be fine. I'm just going to Veridae to help Cielo with getting Idol Hearts moved to Axel. I'll only be gone a few days. Just wait and see, Kazuma. Everything will be fine, I promise."
He still looked unsure, but he still gave me a comforting nod. Kazuma trust me, he always has.
Oh, how I wish he always would continue to trust me, but I know I'll be losing that trust soon.
After saying one final goodbye, I had left the safety of the mansion and was now walking down the road to Axel. Once I was far enough away that I couldn't see the mansion anymore, I stop walking while my head hangs low. I then bring my free hand up to my chest, clutching my clothing tightly.
"Why... why did I have to see your name mentioned in the paper when I did. Why did you have to come back into my life now; right when I was on the verge of being able to forget all about you and the promise I made. When I was on the verge of being able to fully embrace my life as it is now."
"My life with HIM!"
Why am I forcing myself to do this? In fact, why did I do what I did earlier this morning. Because I made Kazuma drink that potion, and because of what I said, he thinks everything that happened last night was just some dream he had.
How did everything that happen last night even happen to begin with? Oh right, because of that DAMN present mom sent me in the mail. What was I even thinking when I peppered dinner with that stuff. Mom's special spices, my ass. I should have known there was something more to that stuff than some simple taste enhancer.
I don't regret anything that happened last night, I really don't... so why did I...? Damn it, I know the reason. Because I was scared and because I knew it would only take a single action, a single word, from Kazuma to make me give up on this and stay there with him forever.
And that is something I, no matter how much I wish I could, can do.
As much as I hate this, how much I hate myself for this; the fact remains that I have to do this. I need to see this chapter of my life from the past brought to an end so I can finally embrace the chapter I'm now living.
But will I even have that option once all of this is over? Not only could my actions cause me to lose the trust and friendship I have with Kazuma and the others, but it could even end up costing me my very life here as the place I am needing to go to... well, there's a reason why going there is forbidden.
The sound of Chomusuke's meow makes me pull her off my shoulders, look at her for a moment, then I hug her close as I say-
"Am I really doing the right thing here, Chomusuke. Should I really go ahead and do this, or should I throw all this away and return to Kazuma and never leave his side again? Who am I trying to kid here. I already know the answer to that, I know what it is I really want to do... but I can't. I hate this, I really-really HATE THIS! But despite how much I hate this, I still have to see this through, no matter how much it hurts me inside."
With that, I finally begin walking towards Axel, except now I walked with a heavy heart and feeling like I was being weighed down by lead weighted clothing. I don't know if he'll forgive me once he learns the truth. I just hope that at the very least...
Kazuma will be willing to give me a second chance at being his friend.
{|} Part 1: Asking for a Little Help {|}
(Yunyun POV: Day 1-Morning)
I open my eyes to the sight of the morning sunlight filtering into my room. I lay there for a few moments, debating on if I wanted to leave my comfortable bed right now or to close my eyes and see about getting a little more sleep here.
I then recall that there was something of grave importance I needed to talk with the others about which convinces me to finally sit up. I then realize I was still holding Mr. Shogun; the Winter Shogun Doll Kazuma had won for me back shortly after we first met, in my arms.
I hold it out before me, smile happily from the memory of that day, then give it a little nuzzle and a hug before placing it down on my bed. I'm sure some of the other girls, from back in the village, would laugh at me if they heard I still slept with a doll in my arms, but I didn't care. I had such beautiful dreams each and every night because of this guy; dreams of me and...
I blush as I push all that from my mind. Can't let myself be distracted, especially now. I have to hurry or else I could miss my chance. I quickly move over to the vanity and quickly brush all the bed head out from my hair. Once done, I leave my room and make my way down the hall.
Perhaps I should have taken the time to get out of my night clothes but after all these months of all of us living together, I didn't mind the others seeing me in my pajamas like I had once upon a time. Besides, I was no longer wearing that risqué and quite adult nightwear I had sported my first night here in the mansion. What I wore now was far more acceptable and less girly than Megumin's frilly choice.
As I reach the central hub of the second floor, I make a slight detour from my destination that is the stairs in order to allow myself a quick look out the window into the backyard which was also our rather large training area. Well, one of them anyways.
Looking out and down towards the ground. Kazuma and Megumin were there, as expected. Megumin was swinging her training sword while Kazuma watched from the side. From the looks of it, she was getting better as there appeared to be more focus and purpose in her swings.
After watching a few more moments, I pull away and quickly head down the stairs. Here's hoping the others will be up so I can talk with them and that Megumin won't finish her training before I can finish making my request.
Once on ground level, I make my way into the living room, seeing no one save for Chomusuke who was lying dead center on the dining room table there near the wall that divided this massive room from the kitchen. I'm guessing the others are either in the kitchen or maybe they were still asleep.
Actually, now that I think about it, Cielo was in charge of making breakfast today and I can recall Lynn saying she would be stepping out early for a bit but would return for breakfast and with the morning paper in hand. I then head into the kitchen, finding Cielo hard at work and Darkness off to the side, watching the training session going on out back from the looks of it.
"Morning everyone."
I said which was quickly followed by a surprise yawn which was a little embarrassing. Cielo quickly looks over to me with a smile before saying-
"Morning Yunyun, finally decided to come join us."
"We were debating on if we should send Kazuma to wake you up... fairy tale style."
said Darkness, sending me a quick, teasing glance that causes a blush to burn my cheeks. Being honest here, I wouldn't really mind if Kazuma actually did that with me every once and a while. One of those things a girl like me dreams of having happen to her one day.
Once more, I push the thoughts I was starting to have from my mind before asking-
"So, what are we having for breakfast?"
"An Accord family favorite. One that's mandatory for all members of the house to learn. I'll be done here in a bit so hold tight and you'll get to experience it's wonder firsthand."
"I think I know what one you're talking about. I've heard stories that it can leave one speechless and wish that it could be what they eat for all their meals."
That does sound rather tempting, however...
"But can it match the food Kazuma serves us all the time?"
That got Cielo to place her hand on her chin and close her eyes as she begins to ponder my question.
"Hm, never thought about that. I think my family's personal recipes are amazing but when compared to the divine meals that Kazuma has honored us with...?"
"Speaking of our boy, want to hear how the training sessions going."
Me and Cielo look at each other then to Darkness as we await her play-by-play of the training.
"Currently, Megumin has jumped onto Kazuma's back with her legs wrapped tightly around his waist while she appears to be choking the life out of him with her training sword. Now Kazuma's fallen to his knees; trying to do the 'tapping out' maneuver as his face starts to turn different colors. Hm, wonder what set her off this time?"
"What doesn't set her off here lately? I'd say she must be on her period right now but that would imply she spends the better part of the month with that unwanted visitor. So, should we go out there and break them apart?"
asked Cielo. I surprise both her and Darkness when I shake my head before quickly saying-
"I'm sure it'll be fine. While Megumin can be a little... you know, she knows when the stop before things go too far. She'll never kill Kazuma accidentally. Making him regret everything, on the other hand..."
"Yeah, Yunyun's right. That little moment has already ended. Currently, Megumin's bowing repeatedly, probably apologizing like crazy in the process. Kazuma's still on the ground and I think I can see a hint of his soul leaking out from his open mouth. In other words, he'll be fine after a few minutes."
Darkness then pulls away from her vantage point, walking over to make herself a drink while Cielo goes back to her work with breakfast. I, meanwhile, just stand there for a few moments before remembering that I wanted to talk with these two about a certain subject.
Well, better do it now before Megumin comes inside to spoil the plan.
"Cielo... Darkness... there's something I need your help with, if possible."
The two of them give me a look, then they look at each other before back at me as they waited. I then explain to them that the letter I had received the other day had been from my mother, letting me know that my crimson trial would be held in four days, including today, and that if I wanted Kazuma to be my partner then we would need to arrive at the village at some point on the third day in order to get prepared. Once I was done, Cielo speaks up first and says-
"Sure, if there's anything we can do to help you with that, we will. But Yunyun... why would you need..."
"It has to do with Megumin, huh? I'm guessing she won't let Kazuma help you out with this. Is there something about the trial that could be dangerous to Kazuma if he was your partner or... is it just that you feel Megumin wouldn't want the two of you to be alone together for the trials duration."
"It's a little bit of both, actually. I'm sure Megumin will feel uneasy with us being alone together for a few days, not that I would blame her and historically, a boy and girl partnering up for the trials have often seen them become a couple after all was said and done, even if there were no romantic feelings between the two of them beforehand... that was known to everyone else in the village, I mean."
"Yeah, I could definitely see Megumin being hesitant with letting Kazuma join you for that reason alone. And the dangers?"
"Honestly, I don't think it'll be that dangerous. I mean, no one has ever died from undertaking the trials to my knowledge. However, there's a legend that the guardian of the Crimson Demons lives within the caverns that makes up the trial grounds. While most don't believe in its existence these days, Megumin is one of the few that still does and she use that as the main reason behind why she doesn't want Kazuma to participate."
"And what is this mythical creature exactly and why would an encounter with it be dangerous to Kazuma?"
"Well..."
"Hold that answer till we're all at the table having breakfast together. I think training is wrapping up for today."
said Darkness sudden as she had gone back to watching the action outside after having gotten her drink. Cielo was quite for a moment before saying-
"I want to help you, but in case you forgot, I'll be leaving in a few hours for Veridae to visit my parents and to help Lia and the rest of Idol Hearts with their move here to Axel. I will ask Megumin if she's willing to help me out with that but who knows if she'll be willing."
That's right, Cielo did say something about that the other day. So, the time has finally come for Idol Hearts to come join us here in Axel. Guess that means we'll be seeing a lot more of Lia around. Not sure if I'm happy about that or worried?
"I'd like to help you out, Yunyun. But I have to leave later today too. I'll be joining my father in making a report over the transition of power here in Axel followed by a few other things. Now that I'm deputy governor of Axel, I can't get out of this trip like I did with that last one."
"Out of curiosity, Yunyun. Have you talked with Kazuma and Lynn yet?"
I shake my head then quickly add-
"I haven't talked with Lynn yet. As for Kazuma, we spoke via telepathy last night. He said if none of you are able to help me or if your plans failed to work, then he would try to think of something to help me out here."
"Good luck with... actually, an idea just came to me. Probably won't work but if nothing else, it'll reveal a few things we might be able to use to aid you with getting some alone time with Kazuma."
Cielo and I listen closely as Darkness told us her idea.
{|} Part 2: A Mysterious Creature of Crimson Legend {|}
We were sitting around the dining room table, having ourselves a nice, quiet breakfast. Well, most of us as Lynn hadn't returned yet so we decided to go ahead and start without her. Cielo had been right, at least in my opinion. This specialty of her family's was pretty good though I still preferred Kazuma's creations more, not that I would say that openly as that would be rude of me.
Megumin, on the other hand...
That's not important. What was is the fact we were having quite the nice little moment here. Something that we don't often get to have in all honesty. It was times like these that it really felt like we were truly one big happy family. It was then I realized someone was missing from the table.
"Has anyone seen Anna anywhere? Now that she's got herself a new body, I would think that she would be joining us for all meals from here on out."
That indeed got everyone looking around, speaking up how they also thought it strange for her to be absent. It was Cielo who finally said-
"Oh, right... she said she probably wouldn't be joining us for breakfast. Said she'll probably be sleeping in this morning as she wanted to star gaze last night. She'll probably be up in time for lunch so make sure there's plenty for her to eat then."
"Figures that would be the case, seeing as I'll be handling lunch and dinner for today."
"And for the next few days as well, Kazuma. Unless Yunyun wants to handle any of the meals in your place."
said Darkness before sending me a quick wink which I don't think anyone else noticed. At the very least, Megumin hadn't noticed as she was still focused on her meal. Well, since Darkness had gifted me with such an obvious segway here, I might as well take it.
"Actually, I'm afraid I'll have to take a pass on helping out with food preparations for the next few days. Remember that letter I had waiting for me when we got back from doing that... special quest for the guild? It was from my mom, and she wanted to alert me to a matter concerning my crimson trials."
As expected, that earned a reaction from Megumin who had stopped chewing on the current morsel in her mouth for a moment before continuing but at a much slower pace than before while locking her eyes onto me. Cielo, as planned earlier, now speaks up to create a situation that would reveal Megumin's thoughts on the matter.
"Oh yeah, I remember you talking about that once. You have to undergo some kind of trial in order to become the next chief, right? If memory serves, you have to bring someone along with you to act as your partner, right? So, I'm guessing it's going to be our very own Kazuma here who'll..."
"Kazuma can't."
said Megumin so suddenly, so forcefully, that it caught all of us off guard. While we had been expecting this reaction from her, it was still surprising how earnest she sounded once it was out. Kazuma turns to look at Megumin while asking-
"Is there something wrong with me going along with Yunyun... to help her undertake the trial?"
Megumin was quite for a moment; perhaps she was trying to come up with a response or maybe she had been taken aback by the power she had put into her own words there. Regardless, she finally decided to answer his question by saying-
"Bomber Majin Moguninnin."
Like I thought, she was going to bring up that old fable as her reason here.
The others just look at each other, understandable in my opinion, before looking back at Megumin with Cielo asking-
"And that's supposed to be?"
"We... me and Yunyun... (don't go dragging me into this, Megumin) We never told you all about this before, but our village has a guardian beast that roams the outskirts; it's purpose is to protect us from outside dangers."
"Are you being serious here, Megumin? If that's true, then I have to say it has done a horrible job at performing its task. I mean, the whole situation with Sylvia and all. Where the hell was this Bomber Majin Mogu... whatever when all of that was going down?"
asked Kazuma. I was going to go ahead and speak up here to explain the legend myself but Megumin pipes in and says-
"Bomber Majin Moguninnin doesn't appear to stop every threat, only the kinds of threats that are outside the Crimson Demons ability to counter and defeat under their own great power. That Sylvia woman must not have been seen as any real threat because she honestly wasn't... not until Kazuma gave her access to the Mage Killer. As for why it didn't appear after that. I can only assume it was because the situation was resolved before it could arrive to handle that issue itself."
That exactly what I thought she was going to say as her reasoning slash excuse behind that. Cielo then asks the next logical question.
"Out of curiosity, Megumin. Exactly what are the conditions that would make the Bomber Majin take action to protect the clan from dangers."
"Um... well, let me think. If what my grandma told me once is true, it seems to respond to any threat that comes in the form of an outside that has a strange sounding name and sport dark hair and eyes, on top of other threats like to our continued existence that's outside our ability to stop ourselves."
"In other words, it's supposed to target individuals who hail from some far-off land."
I added, noticing that Kazuma's whole body had gone rigid from hearing that. I was about to ask him what was wrong, but then the realization hits me, making me realize that a grave error had been made in the past. It was clear I wasn't the only one to realize that as Darkness smirks a little before saying-
"So, let me just confirm something with you, Megumin. You knew about this supposedly dangerous beast before, when we all traveled to the village after Yunyun got that whole dramatic note from her father and that other girl. You must have also known that Kazuma would fit the description of the sort of person the Bomber Majin would be on the lookout for. You knew all that and yet... you didn't say anything to us about it before. Did you at least warn Kazuma of the potential danger he could be in?"
Now it was Megumin's turn to freeze as a sweat drop comes into being and quickly roles down her forehead and cheek. Cielo is the next to speak up by saying-
"You didn't even warn him about that, did you? You didn't alert him that his life could be at risk of being taken away by some sort of mysterious creature that's supposed to protect your clan."
"I... I... Yunyun didn't say anything about it, either."
"That's because I, like the rest of the village, don't believe the Bomber Majin Moguninnin actually exists. I mean, no one has ever even seen it in the flesh before and as they say, seeing is believing. Only the crazy members of the clan, those who have a screw loose like Megumin and her relatives, actually believe those old fables."
"Are you making fun of me and my family, Yunyun. I don't care if you are my friend, party mate, and the future leader of the clan, anyone who makes fun of my family is going to end up in a world of hurt."
Megumin was on her feet, taking on a battle stance. Once upon a time, I might have been left cowering in fear from the look in her eyes alone. But now, I felt a little feisty myself as I quickly stand. We both move away from the table, face off for a few moments, then howl as we jump at one another.
"Drain Touch."
Kazuma had stood as well, without either of us taking notice and as we had lunged towards each other, he had come in between us and had quickly drained our mana, leaving us all collapsed and weakened on the floor. At that moment, the front door opens, and Lynn quickly comes walking into the room.
"Sorry I'm late, guys. So, did I miss... OK, I clearly missed something big going down."
After that, Cielo and Darkness explained what had happened so far to Lynn while Kazuma gave me and Megumin just enough mana back so we could function normally though he warned any more trouble would see us drained to the point that we would be bedridden for the rest of the day.
Once we were back at the table, Lynn asks the obvious next question.
"So... Megumin, this mysterious protector of yours. Seeing as Kazuma would be one of its designated targets, why didn't you say anything about this to everyone before you all left back then?"
Megumin hesitates for a moment before finally saying-
"I have two reasons. One was because I believed that we would be able to keep him safe should Moguninnin ever actually show up to attack him. Also, he's supposed to listen to the commands we Crimson Demons give it so I figured I could talk it down from attacking if it did show up. The second reason is because I didn't think we'd end up staying in the village for as long as we ended up doing."
"And you expect us to believe all that?"
said Darkness, making Megumin jerk in surprise. Darkness then elaborates by saying-
"Even if what you're saying is true, which I'm finding difficult to believe here. You should have still warned us about this back then. I mean, how can we be expected to protect Kazuma from it if we didn't even know it was a potential threat until the moment it appears."
"Darkness has a point there. I hate to say this, but I can't help but feel you're just making this all up on the spot as a way to hide the truth behind why you don't want Kazuma to go help Yunyun with her trials."
said Cielo, making Megumin retort defiantly.
"But I'm not making it up, I swear it. Bomber Majin Moguninnin is real. Look, it's said that Moguninnin makes its home somewhere within the caves where the trials are held which makes Kazuma helping out especially dangerous for him. That's the only reason why I don't want Kazuma helping her here."
"I wonder... is that really the case of is it because you just don't want them to have some alone time together. I've heard those who trial together end up falling in love when all is said and done."
said Lynn, surprising me that she had heard of that detail as well. Megumin frazzles her hair in irritation before grabbing the newspaper and burying her face into it in order to avoid our gazes. There's some laughter before I move on to the next part of the plan.
"Well, we're in luck here. The letter from mom wasn't to let me know when I need to come to the village for the trial but to alert me that my trial has been postponed till later this summer. There's been some recent activities coming up that requires dad's attention and as the chief, he needs to be present in the village for the entirety of the trials happening."
"So, you still have a few months to figure out who your actual partner's going to be?"
said Kazuma nonchalantly. I notice Megumin peak out from behind the paper before breathing out a sigh of relief. She then goes back to ready the paper; probably figuring she might as well either keep up the ruse or maybe she was actually curious what was being reported on.
Lynn then turns to me and asks-
"Question, what exactly do these trials entail? I've heard about them but don't know much on the details beyond it being a two-person affair and the already mentioned romance that usually happens between the duo that undertakes it."
"There's not much to talk about, really. Two people go in; the one who wishes to become chief and the partner. They go through several trials and once done, the next chief will be confirmed to the whole village."
The others nod at my brief explanation. Cielo then asks-
"So, how many trials does one have to overcome and what challenges makes up these trials?"
I shrug before saying-
"Honestly, we don't even know how many trials there are as no one has ever managed to clear the third trial in the clan's long history. As for the challenges..."
"Wait, no one has ever actually passed the test before. Then how does the leader of the clan get chosen?"
asked Darkness, making me look away sheepishly. Surprisingly, it was Megumin who answers despite not looking away from the paper.
"Believe it or not but there are very few within the clan that want the position of chief, mainly because of all the hard work that comes with it. In fact, with a few exceptions across history, the line of chief has remained within Yunyun's family as no one else wants to be responsible for keeping everyone else in line. Hope there's no need to explain the reasons why there."
Everyone nods, showing their understanding. Honestly, I was feeling really embarrassed right now. Being reminded of how childish and troublesome my clan could be in this moment made me start to have second thoughts about taking the trials for the position myself.
It was then Kazuma said-
"Well, since the whole trials thing won't be happening till later on in the summer, let's just forget about that for now. So, what do you all say we go do something after breakfast. Go have ourselves a bit of fun for a change."
I smile at hearing that. Kazuma had decided to move this along to the next part of the plan. Now, let's see if we can get Megumin away from Axel for the next few days.
{|} Part 3: Individual Destinations {|}
"No can do, Kazuma. Have you forgotten that some of us already have plans made not just for today but for the better part of the week."
"Darkness is right, Kazuma. Since her father took charge of the region following Drac... I mean Aldarp's untimely demise, she had been made deputy governor as part of a new system lord Dustiness has enacted. She will be needing to join him in a few hours so they can travel to the capital to oversee important business. As for me, I need to travel to Veridae to help Lia with getting Idol Hearts moved here to Axel, to say nothing of helping them with getting set up inside their new home."
"Ah yes, I remember. Guess that means it'll just be me, Megumin, Yunyun, and..."
Before Kazuma could speak her name, Lynn suddenly stands and makes an announcement.
"Sorry, but I'm afraid I also have personal business to attend too. Me and father are heading home, and I won't be back for at least five days. Also, Kazuma..."
Lynn doesn't say more; instead focusing her gaze solely onto Kazuma. I'm not sure if the others were aware of it but I could tell that she was speaking telepathically with him. I'll need to remember to ask him about what that once time permits.
After another moment, Kazuma nods while Lynn finally says aloud-
"Anyways, I need to be going. Father is already waiting for me over at the Teleportation Station. I just wanted to come back around and let you all know... and to drop off the morning paper."
"Sure you won't need some of us to come along with you and old man Ruffian, Lynn?"
asked Darkness, making Lynn crack a coy smile.
"Oh, I'll always need help, especially when it comes to the things my old man gets us involved with. However, I'm sure we'll be fine with this matter. Now, if you all will excuse me, I better hurry up and get my things together. Like I said, the old man is waiting for me."
And with that, Lynn turns and leaves the room, heading up stairs to start getting her things together for the trip. Darkness then stands and says-
"Actually, that's a good idea. I mean, I already prepared for my own trip last night, but I better make sure I didn't leave anything out."
Once Darkness had left as well, Megumin finally speaks up-
"So, I guess it'll just me Kazuma, Yunyun, Anna, and I for the next few days then. I guess that will be..."
"Well, not exactly..."
I said, making Megumin once again peek out from behind the opened paper to send me a curious look.
"I told you before that the letter from my mother was to let me know my trials had been postponed but that wasn't the only subject she had written down. She's also asked me to come back home for another examination relating to my recent mana degradation curse."
"They're still not done with that?"
said Kazuma before realization comes over him and I could see him mentally chastise himself for speaking up. Megumin, on the other hand, just returns to reading the paper, or acting like she was reading it. She does say-
"That's how we Crimson Demons are, Kazuma. Present us with a magic based mystery and we won't stop researching it until we have found our answer. I feel sorry for you, Yunyun. All that prodding and poking they must be doing to you; you must feel like you've been ruined for your prospective future lover by now."
I send Megumin an angry shout which is quickly followed by a dark glare while she simply cackles with glee behind the paper. Kazuma, for his part, just sighs before mumbling to himself.
"Great, to be left alone with both Megumin AND Anna without any backup... someone kill me now."
"I believe that's my line, Kazuma. It's you and Anna that's going to make things difficult for me here."
Kazuma's the one who now sends Megumin a glare, one she responds to by sticking her tongue out at him. I send Cielo a quick glance, one she returns with a slight nod before turning her attention towards Megumin.
"Megumin, if the idea of having to babysit Kazuma and Anna is too big of a burden for you to bare without the rest of us here to assist you, then what do you say to coming with me to Veridae?"
"Come to Veridae... to help out with the move, you mean."
"Well, there would be that... of course. But I could also show you even more of the city than what we were able to experience before. Visit the shops and partake in the local delicacies."
"Hm... well, I would like to walk down the red-carpet style streets again..."
"Geez, now you're making me want to go with you as well, Cielo. Last time we paid a visit, training for a concert and being harassed by the Duchess kept me too busy to enjoy the city all that much myself."
Oh no, Kazuma's forgetting the plan. I need to hurry up and find some discrete way to remind him of the plan.
"I'm afraid you can't, Kazuma. Weren't you wanting to use this week to get your quota of items you're making for Vanir and Wiz up to being eighty."
I also shoot him a quick glance, making him chuckle nervously.
"Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I'm hoping to get that contract finished before the Eris Festival. Damn it all; and here I was really wanting to go too."
Cielo smiles at him then says-
"Another time, Kazuma. So, what do you think, Megumin. Want to come and spend the next few days living like us nobles do?"
To her credit, Megumin puts the paper down and looks to be giving the offer some serious thought. Finally, she says-
"I'm so tempted to accept your offer Cielo, but... I'm going to go ahead and stay back here at home. While things may be boring around here for the next few days, I'm sure it won't kill me. Besides, you never know when Kazuma will need the assistance of the greatest of the Crimson magic clan."
Damn it, it looks like my plan had failed. Now what will we...
"Relax, Yunyun. I still have a few ideas I'm going to try with her."
Kazuma... right, you can use Telepathy now. Care to share with me what you're planning?
"It'll take too long and risk Megumin catching on to our mental back-and-forth."
I nod ever so slightly before getting up from my chair. Cielo also stands as I say-
"Well, I better make sure I have everything I want to take with me for this annoying trip. Anything you want me to tell your parents while I'm back in the village, Megumin? Or maybe your sister?"
"Tell them I'm doing fine and that once the Eris Festival is over, I'll come around for a visit. And tell Komekko her big sister will make sure to bring her something nice when she comes to visit."
With that, Megumin goes back to 'reading' the paper while me and Cielo walk back to our rooms.
Less than thirty minutes later, we were all standing outside the mansion... well, almost all of us as Megumin appeared to still be reading the paper while Anna was still sleeping her afterlife away. Chomusuke, at least, had joined us as she was sitting on Kazuma's shoulder.
"So, how long will you all be gone for?"
asked Kazuma. Darkness speaks first by saying-
"Should be back by the weekend, depends on if the High Chancellor needs us for anything more."
"And you, Lynn?"
"Should be the same for me, Monday at the latest. Oh, and Kazuma... make sure you're ready for a long walk once I come back for you."
Eh? What was that about. What exactly had Kazuma and Lynn talked about through telepathy? Wait, don't tell me that the time has come for Kazuma to meet with...
"It'll be the weekend for me and Idol Hearts too, assuming there's no delays."
"Aqua's going to be there so a delay is all but certain to happen. After all, she's the one who wants them to relocate to Arcanretia, not here. I doubt she's accepted defeat on that topic yet."
I guess Kazuma must really know this Aqua person well for him to make such a claim. Cielo nods before stepping forward and hugging Kazuma. Darkness and Lynn also give him a hug before the three of them step away and Lynn uses teleport to see them to Axel quickly.
Once Kazuma and I were alone, sort of, I also hug him while sending him a mental question.
Do you really think you can trick Megumin and join me over in the village here within two days?
"It'll be fine, Yunyun. You asked me to be your partner and your partner I will be. Don't worry, I will be there by the afternoon of the day after tomorrow at the latest. However, there is something I want you to do for me... for us. Think of this as a last resort, just in case all other plans I have here fail."
Kazuma then tells me what he wants me to do. I then give him a nod, letting him know I understand before giving him another quick hug. I then whisper to him-
"See you in a few days."
I then take a few steps back, perform my chant, and then activate my Teleportation spell.
{|} Part 4: Taking a Page from Megumin's Book {|}
(day 2-early afternoon)
I think I might have jinx myself back at the mansion, when I said my reason for coming back to the village was for additional examinations because that's more or less what happened shortly after arriving.
There I was, having a nice little talk with my parents about all the crazy stuff that had been going on since my last proper visit seeing as I didn't really have that much time to talk with mom over the Veridae trip and dad had been absent for what I had been able to talk about.
Then those idiots had come, wishing for me to let them 'examine' me once again and all for their never-ending desire to find an answer to the mystery behind how I had been cured of the mana degradation curse. Naturally, dad gave them the OK despite both me and mom being against it.
Perhaps I should have just gone ahead and told them that it was all thanks to Kazuma and his ever-growing Lich powers but if I did that, then they would go after him next; turn him into a guinea pig for their research and there was no way I was ever going to let that happen.
So, I gave in and went with them for my little 'check-up.' It wasn't so bad, really... once I had relaxed. I jest, of course, as they didn't do anything perverted in appearance or nature, but I still felt like I had been spoiled in some form or fashion because of their test.
At least it was over now... I hope. With lunch on this, my first full day back in the village, over and done with, I was making my way over to Megumin's parents place in order to talk with them about the subject Kazuma asked me to consult with them about. The matter being if they could help distract Megumin for us should the need for that arise.
Speaking of, I wonder how things are going back at the mansion right now? I hope Megumin wasn't causing Kazuma any trouble... actually, I doubt she really was. Sure, whenever we're around she likes to make things difficult if only to keep up appearances, but Kazuma had once told me that she's surprisingly well behaved when it's just the two of them.
I'm guessing Kazuma was still working on creating a distraction though as otherwise, he would have teleported over to the village by now. Oh, I know... before I go talk with Megumin's parents about getting a little help from them, I should go consult Soketto and see what she had to say about all this.
I'm confident she'll know how this is all going to play out and maybe I can ask her if she can see anything of interest I should be aware of concerning my trials. After all, no one said I wasn't allowed to have my fortune told where that is concerned.
Now heading towards Soketto's place, I walk quickly with revitalized energy coursing through my veins when I find myself being stopped by two familiar faces.
"So, you actually did come back the other day, Yunyun. Why haven't you come around and say high to your friends yet?"
said Funifura, leaning forward towards me which makes me nervous. I subconsciously take a step while bringing my hands up like a shield. Beside her, Dodonko adds-
"Is there something wrong, Yunyun. You're looking rather nervous here."
"Probably because of her upcoming trials. Can't say I blame her for that as I would be nervous too."
"Yeah, I guess I am... sorry about not looking for you both yesterday when I arrived. I was wanted to have a proper catch up with my parents and which led to me getting another examination over the curse I suffered recently. I wasn't released from that till just a little while ago."
"That makes sense." (x2)
I breath out a sigh of relief, feeling like I had dodged a bullet there... better not go raising another flag for myself here, as Kazuma would say. I better hurry on my way before...
"Funifura... Dodonko, sorry to be in a rush here but there's still a lot of things I need to do before my trials begin in two days so if you'll both excuse me. I promise though that I'll make time to hang out and talk with you both after, alright."
"Sure, that's fine. Good luck with your trial, Yunyun."
said Dodonko, making me nod as I go to move past them. Before I could get too far though, I feel a hand on my shoulder, making me look back to see that it was Funifura who had stopped me.
"Before you go, Yunyun. Mind telling us who your partner's going to be. Megumin, perhaps?"
"No, it can't be her... unless Megumin's actually learned advanced magic since we last saw her. It has to be one of Yunyun's other party mates."
"Oh yeah, good point. If Megumin was her partner, then she'd turn the whole trial cave into a giant hole in the ground. Let's see, who could it be... that crusader who has an amazing defense yet can't hit anything or maybe that priestess monk. I could see her as a very worthy partner, what with all the options she can bring to the table."
"Yeah... she would make for a great partner, wouldn't she?"
I said while laughing nervously. Maybe I should tell them that it is Cielo as telling them the truth will only...
"Perhaps it's that guy... you know, the sole male member of the team. The one that all of us back in class chased after that one time because of what miss Panyatopi made us all do with him. What was his name again?"
Funifura's eyes light up as I begin to shake. Dodonko, you're supposed to be incredibly absent minded and very forgetful so why of why did you have to go remember something like that right here and now?
Funifura then gets very close to me, too close in fact, as she excitedly says-
"It's him, isn't it. That strange guy you and Megumin seem quite taken with. Come on, you can tell us. He's going to be your partner, isn't he."
"Give us the scoop, Yunyun. Just what is your actual relationship with him all about. Megumin's as well. How is she taking this turn of events and what are your plans once you and him have the alone time the trials will afford you both."
Now Dodonko had joined in as well, making me step back even more. In this moment, the shadow of the old me was coming back into the picture and I find myself wondering if I can outrun these two in a foot race and make my escape. They both inch closer to me and say together-
"Come on, Yunyun. We're friends, right? Surely you can let us in on the big secret."
There was a time that would have made me talk because hearing the word 'friend' said had that effect on me. But I wasn't that girl anymore and it was all thanks to Kazuma and the others.
I was just about to tell them no, that I didn't want to talk about it when an idea enters my mind. It was cruel and devious and very much not my style. But it was an idea I was very much liking. I think it's time to take a page from the book of Megumin and see if I can do it justice.
I crack a smile as I say with confidence-
"So, you really want to know about Megumin, Kazuma and I, huh? All right, I'll tell you guys... but only if you both promise to keep what I'm about to tell you a secret. I don't want to hear mine or Megumin's personal lives become the village gossip."
"Don't worry, Yunyun. Our lips are sealed."
said Funifura while Dodonko made a sliding motion with a finger over her lips to symbolize that fact.
We then look around, making sure we couldn't see anyone else around who could overhear this talk, I then lean in close as do they before finally speaking quietly to them.
"The truth is that the relationship both Megumin and I have with Kazuma... has become very deep, very hot and heavy as of late."
"Ah... are you serious?"
"Tell us more, quickly."
"Yes, I confess we have both slept with him... multiple times in fact. We have both pressed and hugged our bodies tightly against his, exchanged words of love with him. There have even been periodic times when we have bathed with him too. And, as for the other stuff, well... let's just say each and every room inside the mansion, every piece of furniture, has seen plenty of action from all of us."
Funifura and Dodonko quickly jump back, shock present on their face as their bodies begin to shake. While I was heavily exaggerating here, nothing I was saying wasn't a lie exactly.
Both me and Megumin had slept with Kazuma twice; the first time we were drunk and the other of our own free will. We had pressed our bodies against his in the form of hugging his arms and piggyback rides. We have both confessed our feelings when drunk though I'm sure Kazuma is just assuming that it was the booze that was talking for us. We have bathed with him, Megumin having done it twice, while the rest of us have done it once while wearing towels around our bodies; our way of apologizing for that little incident Anna triggered recently. And every room and piece of furniture in the mansion has seen action, just not of the sexual kind.
"You're joking, right Yunyun. That has to be some crazy prank you're pulling on us, right?"
"Yeah, there's no way shy Yunyun and Megumin who has never been interested in romance could have gone so far with a guy before either of us could even take that first step..."
said Dodonko and Funifura, clearly waiting for me to say that I was just joking with them. Instead, I take on a bashful look, acting all shy and nervous while fidgeting like mad before I look towards them with blushing cheeks and say-
"Please don't tell anyone about just how shameful me and Megumin have become."
With that, those two scream out in despair before turning and running away while shouting-
"We're not defeated yet. Just wait, we'll surpass you both before you know it."
I have myself a quiet laugh as I watch them go. I wonder if this must be how Megumin feels whenever she does something like this. Sure, there was some embarrassment I was feeling from all that, but this feeling of victory was just so amazing.
I think I could get use to this feeling in the future.
With that little distraction over and done with, I continue on my way to Soketto's place in order to ask some questions and after that...
{|} Part 5: A Wonky Teleportation {|}
(day three-morning)
"Sakura Storm."
After having breakfast earlier, I had gone out and had made my way to the villages local training grounds. As a way of keeping myself busy as I awaited Kazuma's arrival, I figured I would allow myself a few hours of training in preparation for the trials which would start tomorrow.
Right now, I was working on improving my precision and control over my most cherished of magical spells by using my mind alone to not only control it but to control it in such a way as to avoid damaging any of the training dummies I had set out and positioned very close to one another.
I watch with a growing smile as the magical petals danced between dummies with grace, easily avoiding doing any damage to the dummies. Satisfied, I end the spell before taking in a deep breath. I think it's safe to say that I have fully mastered this power now.
I wonder if Kazuma has anything new he can teach me. I then find myself looking up at the sky before I close my eyes and allow myself a moment to enjoy the warm breeze blowing in the air.
"I wonder if you're already here in the village, Kazuma."
Perhaps I should head back and check with mom to see if he's been by yet? As I go to walk, I find myself being stopped suddenly shift in the energies that flowed with the wind. Looking back up, I see sparks flashing in the air above me and a strange, almost ripping-like, sound along with it.
And then Kazuma appeared in a poof, falling right on top of me.
"Eh, Kazuma...?"
That was all I had time to say before Kazuma came crashing down right on top of me. And if his weight pressing down upon me wasn't shocking enough, he suddenly became even heavier as I heard another grown joining ours which is quickly followed by a familiar sounding voice.
"Geez bro, what the hell was that? Please don't tell me all your teleports have such a rough and painful ending. Well, what do you have to say about... oh... OOOOOO!"
Anna began to squeal excitedly, probably because of what she was seeing where Kazuma and I were concerned. As she jumps up and down excitedly, me and Kazuma quickly pull away from each other and move to be a few feet apart as both our cheeks burned hot from embarrassment.
"That was gold, that was pure gold, you two. Just wait till I'm able to tell the others about this."
"Don't you dare!" (x2)
we both screamed at Anna, making her send us a devious smirk back our way. As we stood, Anna once again says-
"Seriously though, what happened back there, Kazuma. I thought we were supposed to appear outside the home that Megumin's parents and sister are living at. Unless buildings in the Crimson Demon village are invisible, this doesn't look like that place. Also, is it normal to just go popping out in the sky like we did."
"No, not with a controlled teleportation. This is strange, why did we appear here of all places. In fact, that whole teleportation felt all wonky... oh right, sorry about that Yunyun. Guess I don't need to explain that something went wrong back there."
"Yeah, I noticed. Don't worry about it. No one was hurt which is a good thing."
And I really didn't mind it all that much, but only because it was you landing on me like that.
Anna then cocks her head to the side, thinking about something, before asking me-
"Hey Yunyun, ever heard of something like this happening before when someone does a teleportation?"
I take a moment to think before shaking my head.
"Not that I can think of. Any chance your Teleport is just a little out of whack because of that little adventure you and Anna went on while we were doing the special quest for the guild, Kazuma?"
"It would be news for me as I can't recall Palastori warning me of this possibility happening."
"Maybe it just slipped his mind or even he didn't know it could happen."
offered Anna, making Kazuma shrug.
"Maybe, maybe not. We should bring this matter up with your parents here in a bit when we meet with them, Yunyun. See if they may have an idea what's going on. If they don't, then maybe this can be something your clan can look into whenever they have time."
"Good idea, Kazuma. Speaking of my parents, should we go ahead and meet with them now; get the explanation over and done with so we can spend the rest of the day goofing off around the village."
"I vote we wait till after lunch before doing that. I mean, lunch isn't that far away, right. Unless this talk you two have to deal with is going to be a short one, we should save it for after the fact."
I agreed with Anna on that, so I suggested we head somewhere to kill time till it was time for lunch. I then begin leading Kazuma and Anna to one of my favorite spots in all the village.
As we walk, I take note of the lack of Megumin, meaning Kazuma had managed to find a way to distract her so he, and Anna, could come to the village. Soketto had told me Megumin wouldn't be coming with him but not the reason why.
She also told me that I'm really going to enjoy my time with him during the trials which made my heart flutter with excitement.
Soon, the three of us were sitting under the shadow of a very tall and large body tree with a gorgeous view of a field of many wildflowers.
"I like to come out here whenever I'm wanting to feel at peace after a chaotic day that comes natural within the village. So, what do you both think of it? Isn't it beautiful?"
"Sure, I guess I would call this scene beautiful. Not really my cup of tea but... it has a charm about it."
I guess stuff like this isn't something that interest Anna all that much. I wonder what Kazuma thinks.
"I agree with Yunyun. This place is beautiful and peaceful. I can see why you'd like this place, Yunyun."
"Of course you would say that, Kazuma. Probably just trying to score some 'points' with her. Wait till (yawn) Megumin has to... say..."
And then Anna rests her head against Kazuma's shoulder and a few moments later, had begun to lightly snore. Both me and Kazuma send her an exasperated stare and a sigh before we look at each other and smile. I then decide to ask the question.
"So, what did you do to distract Megumin so you could come here."
"Would you believe me if I told you that she ended up creating her own distraction. Honestly, my plan was that I was going to hit her with a demi-mana empowered Sleep then drop her off at her parent's place and have her mother keep her under till the trials were over and done with, then take her back to the mansion and act like she had slept a few days straight. Doubt she would have bought that but that had been my plan."
"Hm, I could see that working... maybe. So, where is she right now? What happened after I left the day before."
"Well, after you left, I walked back into the mansion only to have Megumin come crashing into me. After a quick apology, she ran upstairs with the paper in hand and spent the rest of the day locked inside her room. I'm not joking when I say she didn't want to come out. Got so bad that I had to leave both her lunch and dinner sitting outside her door. At least she did eat as I collect both plates later and found them empty... unless it had been Nia who enjoyed her meals in her place."
"Did you try to talk to her? Ask her if there was something wrong?"
"Yeah, I did try. I knocked on her door and asked her if there was a problem. She assured me she was fine. She just wanted to be alone for a bit. I had Anna, once she had gotten up, to go all ghost so she could spy on her. According to Anna, she didn't see Megumin doing anything weird in her room and she couldn't see anything written on the paper that would explain her strange actions."
"That's not saying to much as I don't exactly have any idea or context on what to look for that could be a potential trigger to make her act as she did."
Weird, this doesn't sound like Megumin at all. I wonder what happened that could have set her off and make her want to lock herself away like that.
"With nothing else I could do, I went downstairs to my workshop and kept myself busy. It wasn't till the next day, that being yesterday, when something even stranger happened with Megumin. While I was down in my workshop, doing what I do, she suddenly appeared behind me wearing a stunning one-piece dress and she asked me if I wanted to go out on a date with her."
Eh? A date... a date... Megumin asked you to go out on a DATE with her.
My face must have been showing my thoughts as Kazuma quickly says-
"Yeah, I had a similar reaction as you're having now. Keep something in mind though, Yunyun. We're talking about Megumin here. Her idea of what goes into a proper date is vastly different than what the normal person would consider to be a date."
"She just wanted the two of you to go out so she could do an Explosion."
"Yes... well, no. We did spend much of the day walking around Axel. We ate out at a nice tavern, took on a show, played a few stall games, then we did the daily Explosion. Here's something interesting to say though. Turns out I made a big mistake with having Megumin train to use one-handed swords."
"What do you mean."
"Believe it or not but Megumin is insanely skilled when it comes to archery. Hell, I dare say she could teach me a thing or two when it comes to the old bow and arrow handling. Suffice to say, I'll need to make a bow for her own personal use on top of a sword."
"You're right, I can't believe it without seeing her in action. Wait, what were Anna and Chomusuke doing when you and she were out on your maybe date?"
"Keeping watch over them... from the shadows..."
mumbled Anna sleepily.
"What she said. They followed us the whole time, probably hoping to catch us doing something obscene with one another. Anyways, after we got back to the mansion, Megumin asked me to give her some mana so that SHE could make dinner for me that night."
"Wait, Megumin actually cooked. Well, at least it didn't kill anyone... did it?"
"No, but it came pretty close. Poor Nia took a few bites then immediately passed out. Anna ate only a single bite before needing to rush off to the bathroom where she spent over and hour puking her guts out."
"And I didn't think me becoming sick was even possible, to say nothing of actually vomiting up a storm."
By the grace of the divine Nekopara, that sounds horrible.
"What about you, Kazuma. Did you..."
"It was difficult, but I managed to stomach her poison somehow and emptied my plate. It made Megumin happy that I did that, so I say it was worth it. I then ended up retiring right after as my stomach was going crazy. No puking or other unwanted things happened, thankfully. Just this really weird dream where... actually, better not talk about that dream as it was definitely NOT PG rated."
"PG rated? Forget that for now. So, what happened to Megumin."
"Well, woke up this morning, feeling more or less OK. Megumin came down not long after me and said she's decided to go ahead and join Cielo over in Veridae. Said the desire to see the sights, enjoy the food, and explore the shops had been on her mind. She left to head to the Teleportation Station not long after and you pretty much know the rest."
Yeah, I do. But something doesn't feel right here. I wonder what made Megumin have a sudden change of heart like that. I'm sure it has to be what caused her to act all weird like she did right after we all left.
"Kazuma, did you ever get a chance to read over the paper yourself? If so, did you notice any articles that could have been the trigger to her strange behavior?"
Kazuma shakes his head then says-
"Unfortunately, no. She said she had trashed the paper once she had finished with it. Between you and me, I can't help but feel there was something in there she didn't want me to see."
I'm feeling the same thing. Kazuma sighs before adding-
"I'm also worried but I also trust her. I trust that if there's something wrong then she'll tell us when she's ready to talk. While I thought about following after her, to make her talk to me, I decided to wait till after she gets back to Axel with Cielo and Idol Hearts. Then, once Darkness gets back at well, we'll have a sit down talk with her. Maybe have Darkness bring out the old lie detection bell if needed."
Makes sense. Megumin can make some questionable choices sometime; her obsession with Explosions being one. But she isn't stupid either. Kazuma's right, she won't go do something stupid and dangerous without at least saying something first.
Like Kazuma, I believe in her and trust that she'll tell us when she's ready. Maybe she'll hopefully open up to us once she gets back with Cielo and the others. After that, I stand while looking at my watch.
"Let's go ahead and start heading back now. By the time we get back inside the village, it'll be time for lunch."
Kazuma nods as he stands as well before scooping Anna up into his arms. As we begin to walk back, I begin to consider making another trip over to Soketto's place either later this afternoon, or once the trials were over with, so we could see if Soketto can tell us what might be going on with Megumin.
{|} Part 6: Let's Speak of the Trials {|}
"I'm glad you were able to join us for the important event, master Kazuma. On behalf of the village, I think you for your time. (pause) Are you not going to say anything as well, honey?"
"Are you absolutely sure you want this man to be your partner, Yunyun. There's still time for you to reconsider your choice, you know."
"DAD!"
Seriously, after everything Kazuma has done for the village, everything he had done for me personally, father is still acting this way towards him.
Luckily, I didn't need to say or do anything more as mother turns to look at father, her smile never faltering as she says-
"Now-now, Heropon. We'll have none of that here. Don't forget all that young master Kazuma has done for us and for our daughter. If he's the one Yunyun has chosen, then it is our duty as her parents to give her our support and to assist them in whatever way we can here."
"Don't misunderstand me here, I haven't forgotten any of that. I'm well aware of the things he has done. However, to allow the two of them to be alone during the entirety of the Crimson Trials... As Yunyun's father, I cannot, in good faith, just trust him to NOT try anything funny with her."
"Dad, what are you even..."
"Don't think about it too much, Yunyun. Just know that as your father, I must do everything in my power to protect you from what is obviously a ravenous, hungry be..."
The next thing we knew, father was collapsed onto the ground, having had the back of his head smacked pretty hard by mother who then looks at us while maintaining a sweet and innocent smile.
I sigh in exasperation while Kazuma laughs nervously before saying-
"Well, I'll say this about your father, Yunyun. He's nothing if not consistent."
"I seriously can't believe him. He has the gall to say all that and yet he spends all his free time perving on all the underaged girls in the village. Mom, seriously, I know I've said this before but I'm really starting to think you should find yourself a better husband and me a better father figure."
"Oh, it's fine, sweety. He's only being a little overprotective, that's all. It's the right all fathers have to enact with their daughters. As far as his hobbies go, he hasn't cheated on me yet so it's all good."
"YET being the key word there, ma'am. Forget about that, what do you say we get on with this."
"Agreed."
I was feeling really embarrassed right now. If not for the fact Kazuma had already met with my father before and thus knew what to expect, I might have ended up running to my room in shame and tears after dad's embarrassing display.
Well, either that or the current me may have been bold enough to do a little something in front of him with Kazuma that would have really gotten the old vein to pop for him. Actually, that's not a bad idea. If dad continues to be an issue, maybe I'll do exactly that to him. After all, it had worked for Cielo with her father.
Currently, I was sitting beside Kazuma while Anna was all curled up like a ball over on the side couch. If she had been faking being asleep before, she had ended up falling asleep during the walk from my 'peace' spot to the house.
Mother clears her throat then asks Kazuma-
"Now, I'm sure my daughter has already told you about the trials in some form or fashion but before I go into the big details, would you go ahead and let me know what it is you know at the moment."
"Sure, I can do that. Let's see, if memory serves, one needs to take the trial in order to become the next chief. One doesn't need to pass the trial though in order to earn the position, they just need to make the effort. Also, I think the furthest anyone has gotten is the third trial, but none have passed that one."
Mother nods then says-
"Correct, none have ever passed the third trial. Now, before I begin explaining what you'll be facing with those first three trials, I want to first let you both know that these trials weren't always used to help determine who the next chief would be."
Huh? But I thought...
"Mother, I'm confused. I was always told that the Crimson Trials have been the sole means behind how we determine the leadership of the clan."
"And that is very much true, Yunyun... save for the first generational leader, that is. Originally, when the village was first settled, our people discovered the trial caves quite by accident. After doing some investigating, it was learned that these caves were designed for the purpose of testing the power and ability of magic users, hence why we have come to call them the trial caves."
"Now, our clan's original plans were to use the caves as a way to train the next generation of Crimson Demons. To be more specific, students of the Red Prison would have to pass the caves trials in order to graduate. However, no one, not even the seasoned and greatly experienced adults could make it any farther than the third trial and so that plan was scrapped. Still, they wanted to use the caves for something, so they just went ahead and made them into the chieftain trial though passing wasn't necessary."
"You can't be serious, mom."
I look down in shame at learning that little detail about my clan. To do something like that with what must have been a sacred test by the ones who had created the trial caves to begin with... My clan really are hopeless.
I look over at Kazuma, seeing the deadpan look on his face which only makes me feel even sadder that he has to put up with all this nonsense too, and because I asked him to be my partner. I'll need to do something for him later to make it all up to him.
"Well let's leave all that for now. I should explain how the first three test actually work to you both."
Me and Kazuma quickly regain our focus, despite the sudden snort that Anna makes in her slumber.
"Now, for the first trial. We call this the 'Bond Trial.' After being teleported into the caves, you'll enter a room with a pedestal and an orb resting on it. You'll both need to touch this orb together. Doing so will cause a magic charm to appear around the wrist of the hand that's touching the orb."
"When that's done, the room will transform, and you'll find yourself inside a much larger room that will quickly begin to fill with an ending swarm of monsters. Don't fear being killed as they can't actually kill you, but you can be hurt and if both of you end up being incapacitated, then you fail the trial."
"To clear this first trial, you simply need to search the cave and find the pedestal and orb again and touch it like you did before. Sounds pretty easy, right?"
"Sure, but what's the catch? I doubt it's just the danger of being overwhelmed by monsters. And what about this magic charm you said will appear around our wrist?"
asked Kazuma, making my mother smile.
"My daughter's writings were right about you. You really are a smart one, master Kazuma. There are two other things you must be aware of for this trial. First, the room will be filled with mysterious particles that will negate the use of all magic and skill-based attacks. The two of you will have to rely on regular weapons and hand-to-hand combat for the duration of the first trial."
That won't be a problem. I can fight with my short sword fairly easily enough and I know Kazuma can hold his own with his sword as well. If anything, I can't help but feel a little excited as I've always wanted to see if me and Kazuma have good synergy when it comes to fighting back-to-back like this.
"Now, for the other thing. As you pointed out, Kazuma, I mentioned that both you and Yunyun will have magic charms placed on your wrist. The purpose of these is to create a tether of light between you both. When you are close together, you will find your attacks much stronger, and you'll be able to feel what the other person is feeling. And if you are pulled apart, then the connection will gradually weaken and if you two have to great a distance between, then the tether will be lost, and you will both become incredibly weak and easy pickings for the trial monsters."
"So that's why this is called the Bond Trial."
I said before my father's voice speaks up, surprising me to see him back with us again so quickly. I guess mother took it easy on him with this one.
"Correct; staying close will make you both stronger and being apart will gradually weaken you. The trial beast know this as well and will actively work to force you two apart in order to weaken you both and see you defeated. Though this may be the first trial, don't take it likely as over fifty percent of those who have taken the trial in the past have seen their trial ended here."
"Seriously, half of the past leadership of the village... that's really hard to believe, sir."
"Tell me about it. What makes it even worse is that those who can't even pass the first trial have to suffer a one-week shaming period by everyone in the village. Sounds cruel, I know, but that's just how we Crimson Demons roll."
"There are so many changes I'm going to be making once I become the next chief. I better go ahead and write that down before I can forget it."
And that's exactly what I did, pulling out a pen and paper and quickly jotting that note down. Once finished, I looked back at mother who then began to explain the second trial we'll be facing.
"Next, with the second trial, the goal here isn't to find some magic orb but to kill all the trial beast within a set amount of time. Hm... I can't seem to recall the numbers and the limit. Give me a moment too..."
"It was one-thousand monsters within twenty-four hours."
said dad, making mom pop her closed hand into an open fist.
"Oh, that's right. One thousand in twenty-four. Seems difficult, I'm sure but it's all good as you'll find your magical abilities have been overcharged for this one, Yunyun."
"What do you mean, mom?"
"Your mother means that while the first test robs you of magic, the second test will give you quite the overdose of magic. You will find yourself being able to fire off powered-up versions of all your favorite spells and you'll have practically unlimited mana as well as the mana rich cavern will recharge you faster than you can cast."
"And the catch, apart from the time limit."
asked Kazuma with mother saying-
"Like before, there are two catches. One is that many of the monsters will hide from you. The bulk of them will attack but some, I believe a quarter of them, will actively hide themselves in various sneaky ways. Kazuma, this is where you'll come in. I hear you have Enemy Detection so once Yunyun has taken out all the attackers, you'll be able to aid her with finding all the hiders."
"I can do that."
"Also, I believe you'll find a countdown timer will appear on one of your hands so you can keep track of your remaining time while your other hand will have a kill tracker, so you'll know how many are left."
adds father. I nod before turning to mom and asking her about the other thing.
"The other thing is that Kazuma will have to play the role of a horse for this one. Yunyun, while your magic may be overpowered and limitless for this trial, the drawback is that you won't have the energy to stand and move on your own, save for your hands. Because of this, you'll need Kazuma to carry you around for the duration of the second trial."
Eh, having Kazuma carry me around... I mean, I'm OK with that but that's going to be... I mean, my chest is so big that...
The sound of snicker catches our ears, making us turn to see Anna had woken at the worst time, a devious look was in her eyes as she says-
"Don't mind me, keep talking about how Yunyun's going to have to press her body up against my big bro's back non-stop for what could be many LONG hours. Makes me wish I could be there to see what that could possibly lead too."
"No one asked for your opinion, Anna!" (x2)
shouted me and Kazuma. My father sighs before mumbling to himself.
"Now maybe you understand why I'm against him being your partner. Listen, boy, if you even think of trying anything funny with my daughter while she's unable to fight back, I swear I'll..."
A few moments later, after helping mother with putting my unconscious father to bed, we returned to sitting across from each other. Mom then clears her throat before saying-
"Sorry about that, master Kazuma. My husband making such a big hole in the wall must have surprised you."
"Not really, ma'am. At this point, nothing in the village here really surprises me anymore."
Thank you so much for being so understanding and putting up with all this, Kazuma. I mean it when I say I'll do something for you later to really make this all up to you.
"Now, for the third trial. First, be aware that you'll both end up being separated from one another for this. You will find yourselves standing before a mirror that will reflect a truth you may or may not wish to see. In order to pass this trial, you both must walk into your respective mirrors... or so is the belief our people have."
"Wait, you don't know how to actually complete the third trial?"
said Anna, making me say to remind her-
"No one in the history of the clan has ever passed the third trial before but I don't understand, mom. If all that's needed to be done here is step through these mirrors, then why hasn't anyone actually been able to do that. Even if those mirrors are showing you something potentially unpleasant..."
"I think it's because you're being shown something you may not like that does it."
"Master Kazuma is right, Yunyun. The mirrors have an enchantment placed upon them. If you see something you like, then walking forward is easy. If you see something you don't like, on the other hand, then you feel this impulse to turn and run away. That is the true third trial, not running away should you be shown a painful truth. It was because of this that your father and I failed when we took the test. I was able to pass my mirror, but your father failed his test thus we both failed."
"So, that's how it's all going to go, is it? No problem, with me and Yunyun working together here, there's no way we'll fail this test."
Kazuma then looks at me with eyes full of confidence and a thumbs up. Seeing this makes me smile as a sense of calm comes over me. Kazuma's right. With the two of us together, I have no doubt we'll be the first to go beyond the third trial.
"So, is there really NO information on what the fourth trial could be then? Not even a clue?"
asked Anna, showing that she had heard that part of the explanation, or had remembered hearing me talk about it in the past. Mom shakes her head then says-
"Sadly no, seeing as no one has ever manages to pass the third trial, as was said previously. For all we know, the third trial could be the last trial one has to undertake... but something tells me that there's more that awaits. Having said that, be careful you two. The fact we know nothing here does fill me with concern."
"Like I said before, miss Rikarika, we got this."
Mom nods happily then says-
"Of that I have no doubt, master Kazuma. After you saved my daughter from losing her mana before, I believe that as long as you're with her, there will be nothing she can't overcome. Anyways, the afternoon is long in its hour so you all should go out and have a bit of fun while you can... and make sure you all get plenty of rest. The trial shall commence at ten in the morning."
{|} Part 7: An Ultima for Komekko {|}
Before we left, Kazuma and I remembered the strange teleportation he and Anna had experienced earlier. While mother didn't have an answer for what could have happened, she did agree that something wasn't right about it and that she would bring this matter up with the clan's magical researchers to figure out.
After that, the three of us had gone out and spent a bit of time just wandering around. Anna, as Kazuma had warned me, had gone totally gaga over the village and the two of us had to forcibly grab her in order to make sure she didn't cause us any trouble.
She was also intrigued by the statue standing at the center of the lake; the one that depicted Kazuma, Megumin, and myself standing victoriously over the mage killer. As the sun began to set, we finally reached the home of Hyoizaburo and Yuiyui. One knock later, we waited for someone to open the door.
"Go away, whoever you are. Despite how nice the house my look, we have nothing of value inside."
Kazuma turns to look at me and quietly says-
"Is this how miss Yuiyui always responds to visitors when they knock?"
I couldn't voice my reply, only nod my head in exasperation. Anna just rolls her eyes then says-
"I think I'm beginning to understand why Megumin is the way she is now."
"Guess I have no other choice here. Oh Komekko, your big brother is here to make you a heavenly dinner tonight."
said Kazuma loudly. Almost immediately, there was a series of crashing sounds, as well as the voice of Yuiyui crying out for Komekko to "not go destroying stuff when she's running towards the front door." The next thing we all knew, the door swings open hard followed by a blur flying through the air to slam into Kazuma, hugging him tightly as it says-
"Food... food, big brother is going to make me some food tonight. I'm so happy."
Kazuma chuckles as he gives the little girl some head pats.
"Glad to see you too, Komekko. So, you and the 'rents doing alright since I was last here?"
"Food-food-food..."
Komekko kept on chanting while popping up and down. A moment later, Yuiyui came into view and after finally seeing us, her eyes lit up like the stary night sky.
"Ah, Kazuma and Yunyun... so sorry about that. I was thinking it was... never mind that for now. I'm glad to see you're doing well. Wait, is Megumin not with you both right now... and who's this young lady?"
A few minutes' worth of explanations later, Yuiyui says-
"I see, so you managed to find something to distract her. Very good... though I should warn you both to be ready. Once my first born finds out about this, and we all know she will eventually, expect a long and annoying lecture to come from her over your actions. And also, nice to meet you, Anna. I'm sure we'll get along with one another."
"Oh, I'm sure we will as I have so many stories to tell you about Megs and our Kazuma here. The kind of stories I'm sure you're going to want to hear from me."
That makes Yuiyui's eyes start to glow with excitement, and I confess that I'm also interested in what Anna would have to say. Honestly, I didn't even care if she revealed the 'me and Megumin getting drunk' incident to her as I was curious on how Anna would spin the whole thing.
"Before that, want to tell me what made you avoid opening the front door before. Please don't tell me all that eris I gave you all has already been spent on useless junk."
said Kazuma, earning an immediate jerk from Yuiyui who quickly goes stiff as she looks away.
"No, that's... that has nothing to do with..."
As Kazuma smacks his head, I can't help but shake mine as well. I'll have to ask mother later if she knows what happened and of course, we'll have to alert Megumin to this once we see her again as I have no doubt she'll want to come home to yell at her parents for whatever stupid stunt they pulled.
"Well, that's enough of that. So, does anyone want to come inside so we can get dinner started."
"Yes, dinner... hungry, big brother. Give me food-food-food-food-food now!"
"Alright, Komekko. I'm hearing you. I'll go make you something amazing... but first, there's something I want to show you."
"Ah, but I want to eat your cooking now, big brother."
whined Komekko though the rest of us were more curious about what it was he wanted to show Komekko here.
Kazuma just pats her head again, telling her that she'll want to see this and to trust him. He then asks if there were any monsters nearby he could use as a demonstration. A few moments later, Yuiyui had teleported us to what she coined as her "favorite" EXP farming spot.
"Hold tight everyone, let me see if... ah, luck is on our side. There's a Gigatoise right now."
Ahead of us, possible a good two to three-hundred feet away was a Gigatoise; an incredibly massive is size turtle like monster. Standing at three times the size of the average two story home, these monsters were usually lax and not considered dangerous... unless you piss it off.
And if you ever did piss one off, make sure you have a reliable exit strategy as these guys are fast as they travel by going inside their nigh impenetrable shells which then spin around, thus allowing for rapid movement. They also have a powerful bite, capable of snapping reinforced steel metal like they are mere twigs. I've even heard one was able to crush pure adamantite armor with one bite.
"So Kazuma, think this will do for a proper showing of whatever it is you want to show us here?"
"Yeah, I think so... though I guess we should be ready to make a run for it as I've never tried this on a monster known for having such insanely high defense that it would make Darkness jealous."
"Speaking of Darkness, what do you think she would be doing right now if she were here with us?"
asked Anna. Honestly, I didn't want to even think about that, so I didn't offer up my thoughts. No one answered, actually. Instead, I asked Kazuma-
"So, what is it that made you have Yuiyui bring us out here?"
"It better be REALLY important to make me wait even longer for dinner."
adds Komekko as she puffs her cheeks out in annoyance. Kazuma smiles as he looks down at her then says-
"Oh, trust me, Komekko. This is important as I think it's time I show you the super amazing magic spell I've been making for you and you alone."
The moment she heard that, Komekko's eyes immediately light up as she begins hopping up and down with excitement. So that's what this is all about. I knew Kazuma had been making a spell for Komekko too, but he never told us anything about it. I wonder what it's going to be.
"So, today's the day we finally learn what this super amazing spell is all about. I confess that I too have been curious about what your mind has conceived."
"A new spell, huh... wait, is it going to be THAT spell, bro? The one you used during our little misadventure with Alice. Oho, are you all going to like this one."
So, Anna has seen it in action before. I don't think that's fair. Oh well, I'm getting to see it now so it's all good. Kazuma then kneels down so Komekko could see better with me and Yuiyui also kneeling down. Kazuma then brings his hands together which is quickly followed by a glow enveloping them. One hand begins to glow with a white light while the other shines with a black light.
And then he pulls his hands apart just a little, revealing a black sphere with little white lights like stars rapidly zipping around inside the marble sized spear. Komekko's eyes were wide and filled with sheer wonder while Yuiyui's, and I'm sure my eyes as well, were wide with awe.
"So pretty..."
said Komekko as if in a trance. I had to agree as Kazuma smirks before standing.
"Just wait for this is about to get chaotic out here."
He then takes on a pose like he was about to throw a ball though instead of a throw, it's more like I push as he sends the sphere of magic flying through the air towards the Gigatoise. The moment it collides with the monster, Kazuma snaps his fingers while saying-
"Now behold this power... ULTIMA!"
The moment he snapped his fingers, a massive burst of energy fills the air as the Gigatoise, who rarely ever showed any sign of emotion, quickly suffers a bug out moment with its eyes as its whole body begins to shake. Cracks then begin to form all over it as energy leaks it and then...
The sphere of power... no, the Ultima expands put from within its body, growing larger and larger till there was nothing left of it to be seen. It grows just a little bit more before it goes from being a sphere to being a geyser of power that races into the sky till nothing was left where it had once been.
To say that we were all amazed and impressed with what we just saw was an understatement. But none were happier than Komekko herself as she suddenly walks past Kazuma then stops to look back at us before taking on a pose and proclaiming loudly.
"My name is Komekko; the Crimson Demons number one little sister and she who will one day wield the power of Ultima magic."
Her eyes then began to shine brightly as we all just looked at her. She looked so adorable in this moment. Kazuma then says-
"There's plenty more I'll need to teach you about Ultima before you can wield it effectively. But, before I can do that, you'll have to attend Red Prison Academy and perform as well as your sister did."
"Yay, Ultima-Ultima-Ultima..."
cheered Komekko, making me wonder if she had heard what Kazuma had said. I hear Anna whistle out an impressed sound before saying-
"Holy crap, Kazuma. That was even more powerful and intense looking than the last one you did."
"I must say I agree with Anna here. That was certainly a spell unlike any I have seen before."
"And that's only the beginning. Once time permits, I'll recreate even more amazing spells from my homeland to add to this world's pool of magical options."
"Sounds good. Now, I think we should be getting back. Dinner won't be cooking itself; you know."
Can't argue with that. With that, we teleported back to the house where I joined Kazuma in making dinner for everyone that night. Hyoizaburo finally returned home from wherever it was he had been and was happy to see Kazuma. I couldn't help but wonder though if he had an ulterior motive behind his happiness. If he did, then Yuiyui stopped him before he could act on it.
The rest of the evening into the night passed fairly normally... with one curious exception. That being when I overheard Yuiyui ask something quite strange to Kazuma.
"So, did my family's special spices arrive safely, Kazuma."
"Huh... oh, sure... I think so. You'd have to ask Megumin though I'm thinking yes as that would explain the... interesting taste the dinner she made had to it."
"So, you've already enjoyed it then. Good... good... I was wondering if I should have sent a letter letting her know about the special features those spices can offer but..."
"Come again?"
"Oh nothing... nothing at all. Oh, Yunyun... did you need something?"
I'm not sure why, but my internal warning alarm has been awakened. I'll need to let Megumin know about this curious, and suspicious, behavior from her mother when all this if over. My gut tells me her mother tried to do something very-very wrong and I'm sure Megumin will want to come back here to have a little chat with Yuiyui once time permits.
{|} to be continued... {|}
AN: I'm sure many of you must be curious about what went down once Kazuma and Megumin had been left alone, with Anna and Chomusuke as their only babysitters. While I did say some things here in this chapter, there's actually a lot more than can be revealed about that.
But that reveal won't be happening this arc as the focus is on Kazuma and Yunyun here. (I did drop some potential hints though.) For those who are curious about the full story of those near two days, you'll have to wait till Arc 11 before you'll get you answer as that arc is a Kazuma and Megumin focused one.
Also, about that bit about the Bomber Majin Moguninnin. I'm honestly surprised that, back in vol 14 of the light novel, that little detail was never ever brought up; not even once. I mean, you would think Kazuma would wonder why Megumin never warned him about that back when they went on their first trip to the village in vol 5. Sure, the obvious explanation is that the series creator didn't have the Bomber Majin in his mind at the time of writing vol 5 but that would have made a funny moment at pointing out how Megumin doesn't really take Kazuma's safety into consideration when it comes to having him doing something for HER (and for Aqua and Darkness as well).
You may have also noticed the lack of { Insert Image X } in this chapter. After much thinking on the subject, I have decided to not worry about doing that not only for this chapter, but possibly all future chapters going forward. My reason is because the last several arcs have seen me almost forgetting about putting them in, making me scramble to to that just before the upload. As such, I've decided to not worry about it from now on. Maybe one day, in the future, there could be a return of Insert Images to this series but if they do, it will only be for the most critical of scenes I wish to have pointed out, not have them just for the sake of having them.
Anyways, till next chapter...
