Chapter Seven
June 21st, 2018
Arizona lifted up her head to the creak of the door opening. She rubbed her eyes, somehow it already had gotten light out. For some reason, she finds herself again in the guest bedroom of Callie's apartment, but not a fiber in her being was bothered by it.
"Good morning, Mama." Sofia smiled as she made her way over to her mother. Her hair was tousled so much it looked as if she had a crown of her dark hair halfway back her scalp.
"Good morning, love bug." Arizona smiled sweetly at her daughter. Her face still looked sleepy and there was a bit of white powder in the corner of her mouth. "What's this?" She opened her mouth, she grabbed her daughter's face as she giggled, getting a bit of the sugar on her finger before tasting.
Sofia shrugged as she giggled at her mother.
"Powdered sugar?" She exclaimed.
Sofia laughed, "Mami wanted donuts this morning." She crawled into the bed under the covers with Arizona.
"Hmm, not just Mami, I want some!" Arizona smiled.
Callie knocked politely on the already opened door before she walked closer to her ex-wife and daughter.
"Did I hear someone wants donuts?" Callie quirked a brow.
Callie sat down at a respectful distance at the foot of the bed, placed the box of donuts on the comforter and handed Arizona one of the two coffee's she held in her hands.
She couldn't help but let her mind wander to how easy it would've been to have just taken Arizona's cheek in her hand and to draw her lips to hers. Everything could go back to how it used to be and she would have enjoyed this morning as a family together. They were still a family, but not quite in the way any of them wanted.
"Man, and coffee too?" Arizona asked as she took the coffee from Callie and immediately brought it up to her lips.
"Mm, that's pretty good." Arizona sighed after taking a large gulp.
Callie smirked at her ex-wife. "I see New York is growing on you."
Arizona shook her head, rolling her eyes slightly. "Oh, hush up."
Callie giggled. "How many more sites are you visiting this week?"
Arizona stretched her neck side to side. "Uh," she pursed her lips as she began counting on her fingers. "One today, and that one in New Jersey on Friday, do you still want to come on that one?"
"Depends on if little miss muffin wants to have a playdate with Mia tomorrow." Callie looked over to Sofia, who's ears practically perked up at the mention of her friend's name.
"Mia?" Arizona quirked her head.
"Wesley's kid." Callie explained.
"Wesley has a kid?" Arizona raised an eyebrow, from what she had heard about this man, he did not seem to be the fathering type.
"He's a single dad." Callie said plainly and left it at that.
Arizona just nodded although she squinted her eyes slightly as the gears in her head turned. If this man was single, the chances of Callie sleeping with him skyrocketed.
"Can I please, Mama?" Sofia rested her head on Arizona's shoulder as she pleaded.
Arizona looked down at her daughter and smiled. "If it's okay with Mia's dad, honey." She ruffled Sofia's already messy hair.
"Can I have another powdered, please?" Sofia whispered, looking up at her moms with her best puppy dog eyes.
"I think she gets that from you." Callie wrinkles her nose in mock disgust.
"Donuts are donuts, I do not discriminate." Arizona smiled.
"May I?" Sofia asked, starting to get impatient.
Callie nodded, smiling at her eagerness, and simultaneously revelling in the presence of the woman next to her.
Arizona leaned over to Sofia as she snuck her hands into the donut box once again, "Pass me a powdered, too!" She whispered.
Callie laughed as carefully placed her hand on Arizona's right knee. She was cautious not to go any higher and to not cross onto the left. Silently, she knew that was off limits. But this touch, on Arizona's right knee, was met with a small grin and in that moment she saw Arizona relax just a little.
Ever since the dance party with Sofia, Callie and Arizona had become much more affectionate with each other, greeting each other with great smiles, a kiss on the cheek or temple, and soft, protective hugs.
It became routine again. It was comfortable.
To them, it didn't mean anything. It was just an affectionate relationship. Neither of them were in relationships, and they were craving some human touch, they just so happened to be fulfilling that need with their ex-wife.
As Arizona stayed over more often, they got to spend more time together. In a way, they were still family. They would always be family.
June 22nd, 2018
"Dr. Robbins?" An unfamiliar sweet sounding voice called down the hallway.
Arizona perked up her head and smiled politely. She would've preferred to just slump into the counter in front of her or complain to Callie about the endless stream of people introducing themselves to her. She had worked more full time at Columbia-Pres and was beginning to settle into a comfortable work schedule. What was less comfortable was how many people she had to speak to. She enjoyed speaking to people and the fact that many of them did not know the trainwreck of her personal life, but it was hard to gauge who was being friendly and who was prodding for that juicy Seattle gossip.
"I'm not on your service today but I've read some stuff about you." She looked so young, barely old enough to be in college let alone practicing medicine. She had curly brown hair and lost looking eyes.
"And you are?" Arizona asked with a painfully enthusiastic smile and a small forced chipped in her voice. She had gone so long without being the new kid on the block, and now she had to try to make a good impression on anyone and everyone.
"I'm Lola," she stuck out her hand to which Arizona shook, "umm, uh, Lola, Dr. Lola Jenkins." She smiled awkwardly and squeezed Arizona's hand tightly in hers.
Arizona squinted awkwardly as she tried to politely pry her hand away.
"It's nice to meet you Dr. Jenkins." Arizona tried politely ending the conversation, flipping through the chart in front of her.
"So um, Arizona…" she cooed softly, leaning awkwardly against the counter in front of them so that Arizona was forced to look the young doctor in the eye.
Arizona poured her lips together firmly. "Mhm?" She asked, getting alerted from the use of her name. She was perfectly content with being known as just Dr. Robbins, as it usually meant anonymity. She didn't need everyone here to know she had lost her leg or cheated on her wife. Here, she could be purely an excellent surgeon opening a revolutionary clinic for women's health.
"Just maybe you could help me study for my intern exam." Arizona could swear she winked at her.
Arizona laughed at the request.
"Or I could buy you a drink and you can tell me all about this maternal mortality you've been studying." She said with a nervous smirk as the words helplessly fumbled out of her mouth.
Because that would be great dinner conversation. Arizona forced a slow sigh through her lungs and tried to maintain a stiff smile on her face.
"Look, uh, Lola?" She smiled tightly at the young woman.
She nodded eagerly, moving herself ever so closer to the blonde, she tilted her head even closer into Arizona's field of view.
At this moment, Callie had seen this from afar and instantly her blood began to boil. Or, you know, something less dramatic, and a more acceptable emotion to feel in this situation as a divorced partner.
In a moment of thoughtless jealousy and not knowing what else to do, she stormed her way over to the two women.
"Arizona." She smiled, purposely placed one hand firmly but softly on the small of Arizona's back. She leaned just enough away from Arizona so the young woman had a clear view and an even clear message.
Arizona bit her lip, she could practically feel Callie's breath right behind her ear. That always was something that drove Arizona mad in the best way, hearing Callie's molasses-smooth voice flow right into her ear, her lips brushing ever so slightly over the delicate skin. It always made her shiver in the most addicting way.
"Who's this?" Lola asked, her eyes widened at the sight of Callie's possessively putting her hand on Arizona.
"I'm Dr. Torres." Callie said with a smile, her voice laced with restraint. She smiled directly into this young woman's eyes, telling her to back off.
She felt a few goosebumps rise through Arizona's blouse.
The young woman nodded quickly. If she had known who Arizona was, she had to have known Callie. Their internet history is quite intertwined from the documentary and Callie's TedTalk. From word of mouth, it was hard to separate them, the gossip was just too good.
Lola smiled awkwardly one last time before scattering away down the hall. Callie maintained her smile until the young woman disappeared out of sight.
"Seems like you're making quite the impression already." Callie said in a low voice, her mouth just above Arizona's ear.
Arizona sighed. "You didn't have to do that." She said in a flustered voice. She stretched her neck side to side and carefully bit her bottom lip.
"I'm sorry, did you want to go out with that teenager?" Callie raised an eyebrow at Arizona. Just now, taking her hand off Arizona's back and coming around to look her in the eyes.
Arizona laughed ironically. "She asked me to help her study for her intern exam."
Callie could help but chuckled. "Oh, God." She groaned, widening her eyes.
"But thanks, I guess." Arizona smiled genuinely at Callie. "You save me from turning down another person throwing themselves at me." She exaggerated, smiling as she waited for Callie's response. She was trying to gauge her reaction.
"How many have you gotten so far?"
"Today?" She smirked at Callie. "I don't know, too many to count." She said mischievously.
"Ballpark?" Callie asked, a small look of fear came into her eyes.
"Hmm, hundreds." Arizona shrugged before giggling.
Callie sighed a sigh of relief.
"Why do I get the idea that that's how you'll react if someone tries to ask Sofia on a date?" Arizona asked after a moment.
Callie's mouth fell open. "I don't know what you're talking about, except for the fact no one is getting within a ten mile radius of our girl."
Arizona smiled, reaching out and grabbing her hand gently. "I'll see you at lunch?"
Callie nodded with a smile and a small tilt of her head.
She caressed her thumb lightly over her knuckles before letting go and making her way down the hallway.
She felt hot and flustered, well, definitely flustered. Her face must've been boiling from the jealousy she didn't remember having inside her. Except when it came to Arizona. It was so much easier to move on when she didn't see Arizona moving on right in front of her. Yes, she knew it wasn't fair, Arizona watched herself move on, but for some reason she assumed it hadn't hurt as much. But again, the image of yet another person at her hospital almost throwing themselves at Arizona was almost too much.
Maybe this young woman knew they were divorced, but for all intents and purposes these strangers would have known anything. Callie tried to take a deep breath, but part of her couldn't relax. The impulsive and immature part of her wanted to run around telling people the truth.
Callie knew Arizona would have people fawning all over her. She had this magnetic pull where you felt like you just needed to interact with the blonde yourself. Even without that, you heard her name in whispers in awe of her surgical skill and impressive resume. The bitter part of her wanted to shatter that, hoping it would help relieve the hurt. Arizona wouldn't be this perfect stranger with killer dimples anymore, she would be the person that hurt her so deeply. However, with digging up the past, there were skeletons in Callie's closet as well. So, for now, Callie kept her mouth shut as she tried to sort out what that little flutter in her chest was. It was getting harder to differentiate annoyance from jealousy.
Lunchtime came quickly. It became part of their routine, they sat together at the same time at the same table every day they worked. The meetings for the clinic slowed down, but the few straggling meetings left, Arizona made sure to steer clear from her designated lunch date. Date, of course, in just an obligation sort of sense, that's it.
Their table was a small round one toward a large set of windows that overlooked a little courtyard. It felt like a little pocket of peace for the two of them in the busy hospital.
Their feet found their comfortable position hooked together, Arizona's foot resting just on top of Callie's and unconsciously moving a little side to side.
They ate in comfortable silence, making small conversation every now and then.
Arizona frowned down at her plate as she moved the lukewarm liquid around in her spoon.
"I told you not to get the minestrone." Callie tried to hold back a smirk at Arizona's pout.
She kept looking down at her disappointing choice. "But it looked so good." She whined.
Callie tried not to laugh. "Here." She smiled as she handed half of her sandwich over to Ariozna.
"Really?" Arizona asked with puppy dog eyes.
"Just take it, you dork." She chuckled.
Arizona smiled as she took a massive bite of Callie's sandwich. She moaned happily as she chewed, covering her mouth. The amount she took into her mouth was much too large to chew comfortably, but she was just much happier without the bitter and gritty soup in her mouth.
"Wow, it must've been some bad soup." Callie observed with a furrowed brow. "You don't even like sandwiches." She added softly.
"Neither do you." Arizona said, her voice muffled through sandwich.
"I've learned my lesson." Callie nodded with a smirk. "You've got to pick and choose your battles and that soup is not–"
At that moment, a tall man with graying hair came over to their table. He smiled a little too hard at the two women, like he was trying to get something. When Arizona saw the man approaching she immediately placed her hand on Callie's thigh.
"You must be Arizona Robbins." He smirked as he reached out his right hand towards her.
She smiled stiffly as she finally set down her half of the sandwich and shook his hand. With her other hand, her grasp tightened on Callie's lower thigh.
"I'm sorry, and you are?" She raised an eyebrow, but the way he looked at Callie as if he knew her like really knew her made her want to crawl out of her skin entirely.
"Uh, Wesley Hunter, Ortho." He smiled a boyish smile.
Her mouth stiffened further into a forced smile. "Oh, you're Wesley." Arizona tried to say with enthusiasm but was missing the mark by a long shot.
Callie bit her lip, instantly being able to read Arizona's expression from the way she said his voice alone.
"I am, so that makes you the ex-wife." He smirked. Truthfully, he was testing this woman who he knew had deeply hurt his friend.
Callie froze, looking between the two and for a moment, it flashed before her Arizona's reaction with Mark.
"Are you, uh, still able to take Sofia this evening?" Callie added awkwardly, her hand came to rest on top of Arizona's on her lap, she rubbed her fingers lightly across Arizona's knuckles in just a way she knew calmed her down.
"Of course, Cal." He looked over to Arizona to see her expression for the nickname. Just as expected, Arizona's mouth stiffened, under the table her grasp tightened just a bit more.
His pager clipped on the waist of his pants went off, causing him to groan slightly as he read the message. Arizona couldn't help but feel a bit relieved.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Arizona." He said with a sly grin.
"You, too." Arizona said with a stiff crinkle of her brow.
The stiff smile on her face persisted even after he had walked away.
"You can stop smiling now." Callie said slowly.
"Oh, what?" Arizona shook her head as she shook out her forced grin. "I wasn't smiling." She defended.
"Sure…" Callie grinned before she leaned closely into Arizona, "Why do I get the feeling that's how you'd react if someone tried to date our daughter?"
"Why do I get the feeling you slept with that man?" Arizona brought her straw into her mouth and looked away from Callie, her cheeks reddened.
Callie bit her lip, trying to refrain herself from laughing. "Hmm." She played along. "I don't recall." Her eyes narrowed in on Arizona as her cheeks flushed.
Arizona tilted her head as she did to get the information out of Callie, but she didn't budge, and instead, Arizona spent too long examining Callie's barely bitten lip.
Callie just shrugged with a sly grin on her face.
Meetings for the clinic had slowed almost to a halt while they feverishly searched for a reasonable plot. Arizona's lunches or breaks between surgeries were often spent scouting out these different locations, but something was always from. The location was just a bit out of the way, the hallways a bit too narrow, the square feet a little too lacking.
This was the last tour of a long week of touring potential sites. Most of them, she had toured alone in between surgeries, however this one was a ways out of the way so Callie invited herself along. Arizona didn't resist too much, however.
"I can't believe I let you convince me to tour a site in New Jersey." Arizona said as Callie got into the passenger seat.
"And I can't believe I let you convince me to let you drive my car." She added under her breath.
Arizona frowned at the brunette as she got situated in the front seat. "Did you want to drive in New York City traffic?"
"Well, I do think I have less road rage." Callie said under her breath as she buckled her seat belt.
"Do not!' Arizona pouted as she folded her arms.
"Mhm." Callie laughed. "Also, I did not find this site, I just suggested you look at it."
"It's in New Jersey, Callie." She whined, she adjusted the seat closer to the wheel, her legs being a few inches shorter than Callie's.
"Yes, but it's only an hour away from New York City and Philadelphia." Callie reasoned as she pulled up the directions on the GPS.
"Yeah, yeah." She brushed off.
"Shall we get going or do you just want to sit in the parking lot and argue for the next few hours?" Callie smirked.
"Alright, we can get going, bossy." Arizona said with widened eyes.
She stalled for a moment as she looked around to where to put the key in the vehicle.
"Where's the, uh–"
"It's a button," she pointed to just below the wheel. "The key is Bluetooth."
"Oh." Arizona bit her lip, placing the key into the center cup holder and turning the car on. "Thanks." She said awkwardly.
"Yeah, yeah." Callie said with a grin.
Arizona began to weave her way through the parking garage. They sat in silence for a bit until she got out onto the street.
"Damn, an hour and ten minutes?" She groaned as she pointed at the GPS. "Why is this what we're doing on our Friday afternoon?"
Callie just sat there looking at Arizona. "Will you calm down?"
Arizona opened her mouth in shock.
"It's okay, you're just touring a potential location, it doesn't have to turn into anything." She reassured.
Arizona looked over, her face had relaxed and instead a small, genuine smile formed across her lips.
Callie stopped herself from immediately trying to comfort Arizona by placing her hand on her lap.
They spent the rest of the drive having short conversations and banter. As they got further from the city and Callie continued to be reassuring in just the way Arizona knew she needed, Arizona relaxed as she drove.
Once they had arrived and parked, Arizona's real estate agent told them some of the highlights of the property and showed the two women around before giving them some space to explore the lot themselves for a moment.
"It's great." Arizona said with a hefty sigh as she looked around a wide open space with plastic draping and remnants of construction around.
Callie just tilted her head as she studied the blonde's expression. The little frown in the corner of her mouth, and that little wrinkle right between her eyes, revealed her true feeling.
"But…" Callie added softly, so softly as if to get Arizona to voice her opinion all on her own.
Arizona tilted her head as she looked at Callie with knowing eyes. "But it's an hour away."
"It is." Callie agreed softly. She walked closer to her ex-wife.
"Yeah." Arizona barely whispered. "Yet, that means it's almost exactly between Philadelphia and New York."
She looked around the room hoping to find something startling wrong except for what disturbed her the most, the distance between her and her family. Her eyes became misty as she realized this was the best option she's toured so far. It had a unique set up that would allow for a small lecture hall as well as several ORs with decently sized galleries. Everything made sense and everything worked for the clinic, it just didn't work for her.
"Arizona, look at me." Callie said softly.
Arizona finally looked up at the brunette with sad eyes. "I can't find anything wrong with it."
"That's good." Callie said optimistically, although her smile looked rather forced.
Arizona frowned as she just stared at Callie, she took a few steps closer to Callie.
"It'll be okay." Callie reassured, she reached out to soothe Arizona, holding each of her forearms and brushing gently up and down her arms.
Arizona's eyes got bluer under a few tears, they slowly made their way up to look directly into Callie's.
"An hour away." She reminded.
"But now you are between two major cities, that's a lot more women you can be helping." She tried to comfort her.
Arizona sighed. She felt so selfish for disliking it so much. Callie was right.
"What about Sofia?" She asked, her voice cracking softly through her whimper.
"We'll figure it out, just like we always do."
"Callie…" She protested.
"Arizona–"
"Well, well," The cheery real estate agent said as she entered the room again. Callie and Arizona jumped apart and looked awkwardly in opposite directions. "How are you liking it?"
"It's good." Arizona said with a tight-lipped smile.
She continued to list off remaining information, exact square footage and current asking price, but Arizona zoned out the whole time. The only thing she could think of was the over an hour drive that would separate her and her daughter. She had moved across the country to be with her family, and now she was probably moving an hour away. It just didn't make sense.
Arizona nodded politely all the while Callie couldn't take her eyes off her ex-wife. Her stiff posture was telling, Arizona always kept her tension in her shoulders and Callie could gauge her mood based on how tightly she was holding them. It was just one of many ways Arizona's moods were always revealed to her ex.
After a few more pleasantries and formalities, the three of them made their way to the parking lot and parted ways.
Once Callie and Arizona had reached the car, they sat in silence for a moment. Callie continued to look forward although all she wanted to do was to look at Arizona and reassure her that everything was going to be okay.
"At least we have a good option." Arizona said softly after a moment. The word "good" was rather forced.
"You've got a lot to think about." Callie nodded in a similar tone.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." She sighed.
"Hmm, what'd you say?" Callie teased with a smile, finally looking over to her ex-wife with a cheeky grin.
"I can't believe I let you come." Arizona rolled her eyes.
"Excuse me," Callie held a finger up, "Did you want to sit in New York City traffic alone on a Friday night?"
Arizona shrugged with a small smile.
"You should be thrilled I volunteered to come with you."
"Yeah, yeah." Arizona brushed off with a smirk.
"Shall we?" Callie asked as she turned on the GPS, a predicted two hour duration.
"Might as well." Arizona squinted mischievously at her ex-wife in the passenger seat.
The drive had been mostly quiet between the two of them. Truthfully, they enjoyed how familiar and routine the presence of the other felt in the car next to them. It was something so small and simple and reminded them of peace.
As they got closer to the city, the traffic bottlenecked into a standstill.
Overtime, she noticed Callie had quieted down quite a bit the longer they sat in the traffic. Well, quiet except for a small snoring noise.
Arizona smiled as she took the time to freely look at her sleeping ex-wife. Her head was dangling awkwardly and made a small nasally noise every few moments.
It was the noise Callie made when she hadn't been sleeping. When she would finally fall asleep it hit her harder than usual, a few more muffled noises than usual. Her little smile that usually stayed on her face drifted into a slight frown.
It worried Arizona more than it should've.
What sleepless nights had Callie been experiencing? What was occupying her mind?
Every soft little snore redirected Arizona's attention in the otherwise silent car.
Arizona spent the time looking over at Callie in her passenger seat, examining each little detail of her sleeping form. It had been so long since Callie had relaxed this much in front of her, and for that, Arizona was grateful. She tried to let go of the worry she held, if Callie hadn't been sleeping, she was glad she was able to get some rest now.
"I am glad you came, Callie." Arizona whispered in between slowly inching the car up.
