Chapter 15
Kagome sat on her bed while munching on a rice ball she made. It was almost five in the morning. Due to her excitement yesterday, she fell asleep at six and now she's up early and had taken a bath. Now she's waiting for the sun to rise so that she can ask for her breakfast to be packed since she's already having a rice ball.
'System, why are my stats set as a beginner when I've trained quite a bit?'
[Answer: All members are set with a beginner's stats as default regardless of their physical abilities. As members level up, their natural physical abilities will assimilate to the system fully.]
'Oh… I guess that makes sense that there's still some imperfection to the AI Jeff created. Now… while we're at it, System, open quest board.'

Kagome took a deep breath and plopped on her bed and was sorting her thought when an alert popped up in front of her.

J: Hey kiddo! You're up early!
K: I was about to take a short nap when you sent me a friend request
J: I got an alert from the system that you've accepted all it's suggested request so I thought of sending a friend request just so you can text me in case of emergency. Del will send you one as well when she gets up. Anyways, tavern is open for breakfast from 8 in the morning until 11. Be careful outside the gates.
K: I will! Thank you for worrying Jeff. Wish me luck!
J: Good luck kid. Stay safe

it was approximately 6 in the morning right now and Kagome still has another two hours before the tavern is open so she decided prepare her equipment for the hunt later.
'Might as well hunt the rabbits while I'm out searching for mugwort.'
She was a bit worried and excited for her first day out as an adventurer. Nothing could be more thrilling than going out in the nature. It was a huge part of her life when searching for the shikon shards. She did not miss the bickering but she does miss the adventure.
Once she checked her bows and daggers she frowned at her armor. She realized she had not packed any armor for protection. All she has on was a mage's robe. Kagome slapped her forehead hard at her mistake.
'Great. How careless. This isn't your first time out on an adventure, Kagome! How could you forget to pack a proper armor! Seems like I'll have to commission for a proper one when I get back from the hunt.'

Kagome took her license back from the guards, bowed and excitedly waved at them before running off as fast as her short legs could carry her, oblivious to the best wishes the guards were saying to her.
She headed north from the kingdom's gates and once the adrenaline had settled down, she took a deep breath,
"System, open map. Set destination to Moonlight Forest"
[Confirmed destination to Moonlight Forest. Head five miles east and you will reach your destination]
Kagome grinned excitedly and clenched her two daggers that was strapped on her hips, concentrated and with a burst of wind magic, she ran towards the forest.

It normally would have taken longer but thanks to wind magic, she got there less than half an hour.
Be careful master. I sense a group of goblins not too far from here.
'Bomris… Glad to see you're awake from your hibernation'
ever since her fiasco with the bow, the dragon spirit residing in her bow, Bomris, went into hibernation. She had not expected him to be awake for a while. Kagome decided to talk to him on a different time. One where she was sure of her safety.
She looked at her map and frowned when there were no enemies showing up
'System, are there any enemies in the area?'
[Enemies detection feature activated]
All of a sudden there were a group of red dots appearing on her map about two hundred meters away from her.
[A group of goblins have been detected. Number of enemies approximately 5 goblins. Proceed with caution]
"Five goblins and one shaman? I think I can take them out."
She casted concealment on herself and jumped into the nearest tree before hopping towards the group of goblins.
When she reached them, they were settled in front of a cave entrance.
'Huh… I think these are just the look outs and there might be more inside the cave. System, what are the average level of the goblins?'
[Answer: Average level of goblins are level 5 to 10. Hobgoblins are level 11 to 15. Shaman goblins level 6 and above]
'5 goblins with average of level 5 to 10? Nope. Nuh-uh. I'll come back when I levelled up. It would be suicide for me if one of them alert the others.'
Kagome made the best decision for her and swiftly turned away from the goblins and moved around the cave to find her mugworts.
It was about two miles away when she came across a horned rabbit that was scavenging for food, unaware of her presence.
It was slightly annoying that she out of all the game-like features built into the system, the one where it automatically shows the monster's level over its head wasn't one of them.
Kagome put aside her musings and pulled out her daggers. With a quick motion, she slashed through the rabbit's vitals and ended its life

"I guess its time to head back. I've gathered more than enough and levelled up quite a bit"

By the time she reached the dorm it was almost 6 in the evening. So she headed straight to the public bath and sighed happily when there was almost nobody in there. There were only a few ladies. And each of them were in a different pool. Kagome saw an empty one and quickly made her way to there and cleaned herself before entering the onsen.
She heaved a sigh of relief as she could feel her aching muscles melt away. It was a productive day. She completed two of her quests and managed to level up to 12 from hunting 10 horned rabbits.
It was the perfect time to check out her status.

she sobbed miserably. Her younger brother had always been the more capable one in games whereas she just… sucked. Heaving a sigh, Kagome tapped on the new skill.

she thought long and hard about this. Tomorrow will be another day of hunting and this time she's sure she is capable of clearing the goblins nest. But not with these stats.
'I have to get an armor too…' sighing again, Kagome grumbled at herself before distributing her points where she deemed necessary. She took another look at her full skill window and wondered which skill she should level up before asking Bomris.
'You plan to raid the goblins' nest, yes? I would suggest a barrier to protect you from their attacks and add the skill Puppet to your repertoire. Having a companion would assist greatly in your adventure.'
'Hmmm. I see. System, pull up information on the skill Puppet'
[Puppet: Dark element companion. A sacrifice of 20 MP will be needed to summon a shadow disc that listens to your will. It will die after 1 hit from an enemy attack]
'Ok. Well, not pain no gain. Let's level the skill up to 3. And 2 points to earth dome. 3 points to burn, 3 points to freeze and max out camouflage and concealment. That would cost me a total of 23 skill points including the element manipulation. I shouldn't use up all the points in case I get in a pickle. Oh kami-sama please help me'

feeling mentally drained, she got up and headed off to bed. Any longer at the hot springs and she'd probably pass out.

"Good morning, Alicia!"
Alicia, the cook who has become someone important to Kagome the past two days for her delicious cooking. She had come to regret skipping what should have been her first meal on her first day here.
"What would you like for breakfast today? We have eggs and sausages, toasts and syrup and potato soup with bread."
"Eggs and sausages please! And a packed lunch as well. Thank you, Alicia!"
Alicia wasn't the only one smitten by Kagome's adorable smile. All the adventurers in the tavern who laid eyes on her cheery smile felt their stress melt away.
"How was your first day yesterday?" a bald swordsman came up and sat next to her. usually, the normal reaction a child her age would be shivering in fright. But not our little Kagome. She tamed the blood thirsty emperor, therefore scary looking adventurers looked cute in comparison.
Kagome charm mode on!
She tilted her head to the side and blinked innocently.
"Jeff and Del told me not to talk to strangers. Especially scary looking men."
The reaction was immediate. Everyone burst into boisterous laughter and the baldy blushed before scratching his cheek sheepishly.
"Ahh... I'm Caleb. C rank adventurer. I don't mean to scare you! I just wanted to… talk… to you… coz.. cute…" the last few words were mumbled but Kagome heard him well. Giggling, she plopped down from her chair and turned to Caleb and everyone else in the room and bowed before introducing herself.
"I am Kagome! I am an E rank adventurer! I joined two days ago and yesterday was my first day on a mission! Please take care of me!" She gave them the biggest, brightest grin she could muster, and it was silent for a moment and Kagome had thought she had made a mistake of being too bold but just as her anxiety was about to hit, everyone cheered for her and soon one by one the adventurers who were smitten by her cuteness introduced themselves.
Of course, there were a handful of them who looked at her with spite and glared daggers at her. this includes the few numbers of children adventurers.
Kagome paid them no heed as her food was laid before her.

After ensuring she was alone in the forest with no humans nearby, Kagome took a deep breath and concentrated as she collected her mana, envisioned the summoning circle around her as nine black tails swished around from her tailbone and then wrapped itself around her.
She opened her eyes which had turned red from the use of her dark element magic and whispered softly,
"Rise, Shadow Puppet."
Black lightning cracked around in her summoning circle but did not injure her. it took another ten seconds before a shadow puppet the shape of a fox materialized before her. it was the size of an adult male Rottweiler.

'that's what I thought' she grinned
"Mamoru," the shadow fox looked up at Kagome and wagged its tail excitedly with its tongue dangling out of its mouth causing Kagome to hold back a laugh. She scratched the shadow fox behind its ears before giving it an order.
"I want you to hide in my shadow for now. we'll be raiding a goblins nest which is located 300m north of us. Please assist me. It'll be best if we can kill the scouts outside the cave without them making a sound."
Mamoru nodded its head and slid into her shadow. She could feel him hiding there. It was a weird feeling but not unpleasant.
Steeling herself, Kagome readied her bow, concealed herself and headed to the nest.

Settling at the high branch of a tree she previously hid at on her last encounter, Kagome took a deep breath and readied herself. She locked her sights on the cave entrance and tried to do something she hasn't done in a while.
Focusing her mana around her, she pictured a barrier around the cave entrance. Sweat was dripping down her forehead when she heard a ding
[Alert! New skill achieved: Barrier: 1/10]
[Description: You have successfully created a soundproof barrier. Any creatures level lower than you will not be able to break this barrier. High levels of skill will allow you to add more sub attributes to the barrier.]
Not going to waste her time, Kagome notched an arrow and let loose whilst giving the mental command to Mamoru to take out the others that she missed.
Unsurprising, her fox took out 3 of the goblins easily with lightning chain and the last one with shadow spike. She was once again glad she had casted a soundproof barrier on the cave entrance since the goblins have a tendency of shrieking even when dying.
Kagome drew her dagger and proceeded to slice off the goblins' left ear for rewards later.

Kagome petted Mamoru lovingly.
"Good job boy."
Looking at the map, it didn't show any monsters despite the goblins nest just inside the cave. Scratching her head Kagome shrugged it off, dispelled the barrier before entering the cave.

'150?! I am screwed!'

'it's ok. We can do this'
Clenching her fists and taking deep breaths, she calmed herself down.
'Well at least the map works now. It's a 3-level dungeon. How the hell did the goblins build an underground 3 levels down? You know what? Let's just wing it'
There were about 50 goblins per level and right now there's 10 of them 100m away from her. Thankfully she casted her concealment spell before entering. Signaling to Mamoru to enter the shadows, she casted another soundproof barrier away from the goblins to stop them from alerting the others as she hunts them.
'Mamoru, you take out the goblins near the barrier and maneuver them towards me.'
She waited in the darkness as sounds of shrieks were heard and footsteps getting closer. At the first sight of the goblins, Kagome let her arrow loose.
7 goblins came running towards her in distraught. Surely confused as of how and who were attacking them.
Another one fell from being pierced by Mamoru's spike. 6 left
Another arrow went flying and embedded deep into the goblin's head. 5 left.
Mamoru emerged from the shadows and used chain of lightning. 3 down 2 left.
Slinging her bow onto her back, Kagome swiftly took out her daggers and slashed the remaining 2 goblins fluidly on their neck and chest as it shrieked in its last moments. Still unaware of their killer.

Huffing from the non-stop assault, Kagome finally landed her bottom on the floor as Mamoru brought her an ear of the goblin.

Looking at the door in front of her Kagome can only guess that this is the final boss of the level. Sighing, she looked at the status window

She giggled softly to herself before a soft somber expression settled on her face.
"I miss him. That nasty rascal." She whispered.
Gripping her bow tightly in her hand. "19 down...101 more to go."
A/N: Ok so this was partially completed when i found it in my archives. i do not remember how i placed my stats and skill points. Nor do i wish to put myself through the agony of figuring it out. So you can expect future chapters to lean more towards less full status window. Yes, I will try to make sense out of the status board but if i find it too hard, i'm just gonna slap a random number on it. It's either i do that or i'd spend years more figuring shit out before a next chapter comes out lol.
On a side note, HAPPY 2023! It's late, but better late than never. How are yall?! It's still monsoon season here in Malaysia. We're all trying to stay dry and stay afloat amidst the deaths of many due to the terrible flood. I hope yall stay safe! Til we read again!
