Episode 1: Chapter 3

Opening the door to his home, Gabe smiled lightly, he had to admit today had been fun. He was sure he had just found a good friend in Ryan Ericson and that Ryan would be a good fit for the school.

"You still wear those shorts." A light teasing female voice sounded out. "Who are you trying to embarrass Gabe, yourself or me?"

Gabe rolled his eyes and turned to face a girl four years younger than him, slightly below medium height with medium long brown hair and eyes, as well as tan skin, similar to his. She was skinny and wearing the girl's uniform of the same school, although she had got home before him.

Shaking his head at his sister, Gabe replied. "Give me a break Mari, you know I'm not the only boy who dresses like this."

"Yeah, but you're the only one who'd embarrass me by showing those skinny sticks you call legs." Mariana Garcia teased her older brother.

Gabe shook his head. "Oh, shut up short stack."

Mari pouted at Gabe taking a swipe at her height. Deciding to ignore it she instead remarked.

"Hey so, Uncle Javi's here for dinner." She remarked.

"Oh, cool." Gabe said, brightening up.

He followed Mari as they headed towards the living room where Mari had indicated.

But as they reached the doorway they stopped, hearing their step-mother Kate Garcia, and their uncle Javier, talking.

"I don't know what to make of this, Javi." Kate was saying. "We need to think about what David will think when he gets home."

Javier nodded. "Yeah, especially since...well, he's not going to like hearing what became of that guy. Wasn't he-?"

Kate nodded. "Yeah. I know David will not take it well."

Gabe and Mari stood in the doorway, watching Kate and Javi, both were in their early thirties. Kate was above medium height, with long brown braided hair, green eyes and fair skin and a slender build. Javi tall and broad shouldered with dark brown short hair and eyes, a beard and the same tan skin as most of the family, both of them looked worried and concerned about something, something which made Gabe and Mari share a worried look before heading up to their rooms to get changed out of their school uniforms, knowing that was not a conversation they were supposed to overhear.

After said 'messy' dinner, Ryan had changed into black jeans, a dark red T-shirt under a black unzipped hoodie and black sneakers. He had found the small park he had been told about and grinned when he saw Chad already waiting. Chad had changed too, wearing dark blue jeans, a white long sleeved T-shirt with a grey unzipped hoodie and black sneakers.

"Hey, you made it."

Ryan nodded. "Yeah, thanks for inviting me to hang out with you and Erich. Um, where is he?"

Chad smiled and sat back down on the bench. "He'll be here soon."

Ryan also sat down and looked around, smiling, the place looked nice and he was certainly glad he and his dad had moved here, even if his dad was still behaving rather strangely, a little paranoid at times it seemed.

"So...have you settled in here well enough?" Chad asked.

Ryan smiled and nodded. "I think so, I've certainly enjoyed myself so far."

"That's good to hear."

They all turned to smile at Erich who had just arrived and was the one who had spoken. He too was dressed casually in black shorts, a dark grey T-shirt with white socks and blue sneakers. Sitting down at the bench next to them, Erich spoke again.

"So, if you're settling in well, I guess you'd like to know more about this place huh, some good places to hang out?"

Ryan grinned at that. "Sounds good to me. What do you have in mind?"

"Well, by hanging out with the others, we know some good places." Chad offered. "We can show you around right now if you like?"

"Perfect, let's get started." Ryan agreed.

They all smiled and stood up, ready to go and do just that.

Meanwhile, while still out, having not gone home yet, Aasim and Ruby were walking down one of the streets of town, having stopped to get some food and to simply hang out.

"Well, thanks for doing this with me, Aasim." Ruby said with a smile. "Really, it was nice of you."

Aasim gave a smile too. "No trouble, I'm always available for my friends."

He inwardly cringed as he said that, he cursed himself for simply saying that.

'Urgh, seriously...Why can't I just man up and say what I really think…' He thought to himself sadly. 'Oh yeah, because I'm too scared of how she'd react...That's why I can't tell Ruby I love her.'

He had actually had a crush on Ruby for a few years now, but he never had the guts to tell her. He couldn't be sure how she felt and he was afraid that if he said something, she'd not just reject him, she'd think he was making fun of her. Ruby sadly was convinced she would never have a boyfriend or anyone to love her that way, all simply because of her weight. But what Aasim didn't know was that Ruby herself was having a similar issue to him.

She was lost in thought sadly. 'God, Aasim, he's so...I wish I could tell him how I really feel. How I wish we could be so much more than friends...but I can't, if I tell him, he be disgusted I know it, I can't let myself get carried away. There's now way he'll love someone like me.'

Both of them tried to push those thoughts away and tried to carry on as normal, unaware of just what the other had been thinking.

Looking out the window at the setting sun, checking his watch, Cameron Ericson bit his lip, worried. Then suddenly the phone rang and he hurried to answer it.

"Hello?"

When he heard the voice on the other end and what they had to say, he froze, eyes widening with concern and worry.
