Black clouds gathered around Paris and darkened the entire sky. Thunder began to roar across the busy city and rain poured down as if someone in the sky was dumping buckets of water. At Carmelita's apartment, rain smacked against her window with a tapping noise, waking her up.
Irritated by the rude awakening, she peered over to her alarm clock on her nightstand and noticed it was 10:30 AM. She freaked out and quickly leaped out of bed. "Oh my God, how did I manage to sleep in this late?" She asked herself. She quickly slipped on her house shoes and strapped on her robe. Thankfully, she was off of work, but she never liked to sleep late. She had a strict morning routine she liked to stick to.
She quickly walked out of her room, noticing it was eerily quiet in the apartment. She figured the twins would have been at least hanging out in the living room, playing their games, but the living room had no lights turned on as if nobody had been there. Carmelita found this odd, so she decided to check their room, which was eerily quiet as well.
She walked over to their bedroom and noticed there was no light glowing through the closed door. Skylar was known to sleep in sometimes, but Silvester was an early bird. Hesitantly, she knocked on the door, but received no answer from the other side. She couldn't even hear their nighttime fan whirring. Growing concerned, she knocked even louder, but still received no response. "Skylar? Silvester?" She shouted.
Still, she only received silence as a response. She could not figure out why there was just silence, figuring Silvester would at least respond. She began to worry a bit, but figured maybe they were just sleeping in. She decided to open the door, but did not imagine she would find the room empty. Both of their bunks were made and the room was strangely clean. Carmelita started to freak out and observed the room, but it did not appear as if an intruder had entered. She opened the closet door and saw hardly any clothes left. "What?" She started to fear the worst, opening their dresser and found absolutely no clothing in it. "No, there's no way." She cried. She looked over at Silvester's bed and noticed his computer and favorite pillow was missing. Soon, she realized just what was going on. "My babies!" She cried. "Skylar, Silvester?!"
Without even changing out of her pajamas, Carmelita bolted out of her apartment, not even bothering to lock the door. She hurried down the stairs to the parking lot, shouting Skylar and Silvester's names at the top of her lungs. Soon, a concerned neighbor emerged from the bottom floor, noticing Carmelita running around in her pajamas in the pouring rain.
"Miss Fox?" The neighbor ran outside to investigate what was going on. This neighbor and Carmelita were acquaintances. She had known Carmelita since she had moved in, since she had been in the complex for many years. She was an older lady rabbit who lived alone, so she liked to keep up with all the neighbors, including Carmelita. "Miss Fox, are you okay?" She was still in her pajamas as well, holding a hot cup of coffee.
Carmelita ran over to her. "Miss Susan, I can't find Skylar or Silvester anywhere! Have you seen them?"
The older rabbit soon grew concerned. She didn't know Skylar or Silvester too well, but she did know that they were not known for disappearing. "I haven't Miss Fox."
"Have you noticed anything unusual? Anything at all?" Carmelita begged. "Has any strange cars been through the parking lot lately?"
"I'm afraid not." Miss Susan frowned. "Has your apartment been broken into?"
"No. It looks completely normal! It was like they just simply walked out!" Carmelita cried hysterically, fearing where her kids might be. "They wouldn't just run away. Surely not! Silvester is scared to go out by himself!"
"I will let you know if I see anything." Miss Susan assured. She would've loved to help locate Skylar and Silvester, but she had a lot of issues getting around without her walker. She figured she would be no help assisting.
Carmelita knew her older neighbor was in no shape to assist her, so she didn't bother to ask for her to help. She was disappointed there was no information, but had no time to dwell on it. She quickly ran upstairs into her apartment and changed into her police uniform, just in case she needed to threaten someone. Without even grabbing breakfast or a cup of coffee, she rushed back out and ran down the stairs to her patrol car. She hopped inside and quickly started it, slamming the gas pedal down as hard as she could to get the car moving.
Skylar was so eager to finally see Bentley come and rescue her. She knew she and her father were not going to be locked away too long, but in the back of her mind she worried the signals were not getting sent over. Thankfully, Bentley received the signals and location clearly despite the SOS device being broken.
A guard quickly noticed the gang approaching the prison cell and bolted over to them. Without missing a beat, Murray punched the guard right in the face, knocking him out instantly. "The Murray triumphants once again!" He shouted.
Sly grew the biggest smile he had ever had, feeling a huge sigh of relief leave his body. He was beyond excited to finally see his best friends again. It might've just been a few days for him, but it was a few days too long. He knew he couldn't really function without Bentley.
"Come on guys, we need to get out of here!" Bentley cried, ignoring Sly completely. He was very excited to finally see his long time best friend, but he knew they had no time for a reunion. He had no idea just how dangerous this prison was, and he was not willing to find out.
"Nice to see you too, pal." Sly sarcastically responded. "We can't get out of here, trust me I tried. This place is locked down tight."
Bentley raised an eyebrow, confused about what Sly had just said. "Uh, did you forget who I am?" He laughed a bit. He examined the cell door, noticing it wasn't as strong as it appeared. He noticed some weak points in the welding job on the top, enough for Murray to possibly break the bars open. He knew Sly and Skylar couldn't break them on their own, but for Murray it shouldn't be a problem. "I think I see some faults on the welds with the door. Do you think you can break these bars off, Murray?"
Murray slammed his fists together. "No job is too tough for The Murray."
Bentley rolled his eyes. "Yes, we know. Can you break these bars or not?"
Murray, with all his strength, pulled the bars as hard as he could. His face began to turn bright red and his face became soaked with sweat. He was putting every ounce of strength he had. After about 30 seconds of pulling, he managed to break one bar off.
"I think we can squeeze through this, Murray." Sly smiled. The gap Murray created was not big, but it was big enough for him and Skylar to squeeze through. Skylar squeezed through first, followed by Sly. Sly reached through the gap and pulled his cane through. "Thank you guys for getting us out of there."
"Don't mention it." Bentley smiled. "We've been worried sick about you. But we can have a reunion later, for now we got to get the heck out of here!"
Skylar looked around and noticed Silvester was not present at all. "Where's Silver?" She asked concerningly.
"He's back at the van. I didn't want him to get hurt, so I had him stay." Bentley responded.
Sly had so many questions, but he knew he had to get out of the prison before he could bother asking any of them. After all, he didn't want to end up back in the cell with his other friends, or worse. Looking back, he wondered about Slytunkhamen II. He was arrested along with Sly, but he did not know exactly where he was being held. All he could remember was finding him sitting at the market selling some bread, but didn't manage to talk to him long. All he could gather was where he was at and that mysterious buildings were starting to pop up. Before he knew it, some guards approached them and separated them, throwing Sly into prison.
Bentley led the gang out through the front door, quickly trying to avoid being caught. Luckily for them, Murray had already knocked out about 90% of the guards so they were able to make an easy escape through the front door. This method wasn't exactly Sly's style, or Skylar's style, but any method was acceptable if it got them out of that cell.
"Slytunkhamen II is trapped somewhere." Sly mentioned before leaving. "We need to find him."
Bentley sighed. "Sly, we will find him later. We need to get out of here. I promise I will do what I can to track him down."
Sly frowned, but decided not to argue about it. Bentley was right, they had to leave. After all, a child was with them and she needed to be taken to safety more than anyone.
Carmelita had so many ideas rushing through her head at once. She kept fearing the worst about her kids. She had no idea what she would do if something bad had happened to them. Someone would be extremely sorry though, that's for sure.
All she could think was to check at Bentley's house. She did not expect them to be there, but hoped Bentley would be able to find them fairly easily. She drove as fast as she could despite rain pouring on her windshield, driving recklessly through Paris.
She aggressively pulled through his empty driveway. She quickly ran up to the door and barged in, not even caring to knock. "Bentley!" She cried as loud as she could. "Bentley! I need your help!"
To Carmelita's surprise, Penelope emerged from Bentley's tech room down the hall. She was extremely confused to see Carmelita, especially looking as worried as she did. Carmelita was soaked head to toe from the rain and looked as if she had been crying a lot about something. "Carmelita? Is everything okay?"
"Where is Bentley?" Carmelita begged. She wondered what Penelope had been doing there, but didn't care all that much. "Please go get him."
Penelope shook her head. "I'm afraid Bentley isn't here."
Carmelita's face turned pale, feeling instantly hopeless. "He's not? Where is he?"
Penelope still was confused about why Carmelita was wondering where Bentley was. Did she even know about the time machine? "You didn't know? Bentley went to ancient Egypt to rescue Sly."
Carmelita felt instantly faint hearing this. She now knew where her kids were, but continued to deny her thoughts. "I'm looking for Skylar and Silvester. They are missing."
Penelope soon realized just what was going on. "Skylar? Silvester? They went with Bentley. You didn't know? They brought over the artifact from the museum so they could go get Sly. I stayed here to watch over everything while they are gone."
Carmelita's face turned bright red as her body filled with anger. Not only did they rob the museum…again…but they ran away from her. She could not help but feel an overwhelming amount of anger at everyone, especially Bentley. "HOW DARE YOU!" She accused. "HOW DARE YOU SEND MY BABIES BACK LIKE THAT?"
Penelope backed away in fear of the clearly angry Carmelita. "I'm sorry. I didn't know that you didn't know. I would've never let it happen if I had known."
Carmelita didn't accept Penelope's excuse. "Bring them back." She demanded.
Penelope's face grew sad, almost tearing up. She felt horrible for allowing the twins to go with Bentley. Carmelita was right, she should have known better. She knew it was unusual for the twins just showing up without their mother and a stolen artifact. "I can't." She cried. "Bentley has the artifact and the actual machine. My machine is broken. I was told to wait here and keep an eye on the Thievius Raccoonus."
Carmelita sighed. She knew Penelope couldn't have been responsible. After all, she was just following directions. All she could do was just cry, blaming herself. If she had just listened to her kids, they might have been in Paris with her or at the least her in Egypt with them. Carmelita just still had issues accepting what the law really was. Her black and white thinking got the best of her, again, and she was now paying dearly for it. "Can I at least stay here with you when they come back?"
Penelope was hesitant, as she did not want to get arrested by the inspector, or worse. She did remember they had a deal, and did somewhat trust her. "Yes."
"I'm gonna kill that turtle." Carmeltia threatened.
"Don't do that. I'm sure Bentley is keeping them safe wherever they are at. He just wants to bring Sly home."
Running through the modernized city, the gang managed to not get caught by anyone throughout their journey. Sly was relieved once the Cooper Van came into his sights. He looked over to the side and noticed a small cave the van was parked next to. "I guess that's the hideout."
Bentley, without stopping, responded without emotion. "Yeah, that's all we could find for now."
Skylar was the first to run into the hideout, fearing that they were being followed. She quickly hid herself behind the walls, noticing her brother tucked away in a corner staring at his computer. "Silver!" She ran up and hugged him, relieved he was okay.
Silvester smiled. "I was worried about you, Sky. I'm glad you're okay."
Skylar stopped hugging him and turned red. "I…found our dad."
Before Silvester could respond, Bentley, Murray, and Sly sprinted inside the cave, luckily with no unwanted guests following them. Murray rolled a huge rock that was tucked away in a corner to seal the door closed. Bentley gasped aggressively and pulled out an inhaler. He puffed some air into his lungs to try to catch his breath.
"This desert is no place for an asthmatic." He whined.
Sly looked around and noticed Slivester with Skylar. He still was in shock that he even had kids, and that they were here with him. He walked up to Silvester and looked right at him. Silvester backed into a corner, fearing the strange raccoon staring at him. Sly couldn't help but notice that he looked just like Carmelita and not like him. This didn't seem to bother him, but it did bother him that Silvester did not want to talk to him at all.
"Hey guy." He awkwardly tried to break the ice with his son. "It's…it's good to meet you."
Silvester didn't respond, hiding himself in a separate room in the cave. Sly felt instantly upset that his son refused to talk to him. He debated going into that room he hid in, but didn't want to scare him more.
"Don't worry about him." Skylar mentioned. "He's shy, and he's very scared. He will warm up to you, just give him some time."
Sly didn't respond, sitting on the cold hard ground. Thankfully, the cave wasn't dark as Bentley had some lights to brighten it up. It had several little spaces around it, looking like small little rooms. It wasn't an ideal place to stay, but no safehouse really is.
Bentley wheeled over to Sly to try to clear some things up for him. "I'm so glad we have found you. I'm sorry we had to rush out so quickly, but we had to get out of there!"
Sly sighed in disappointment. "How long have I been gone, Bentley?"
"10 years." Bentley said with a depressing tone. "10 long years."
Sly was so confused. "I don't get how that happened. I've only been here for a few days. I watched the sun rise and set. How did you not see the note I wrote? I thought maybe you would have seen it."
Bentley frowned. "Well, to be honest I didn't really look at the Thievius Raccoonus too much, Sly. I didn't think it was going to help locate you, and I apologize about that. For once, I was wrong."
Sly wasn't mad at his best friend about the situation, just disappointed. He felt he missed everything in his kids' lives. His own son wasn't even willing to talk to him! He couldn't wrap his mind around how all of this could've ever happened. He felt the most guilty about Carmelita. He had no idea if she would ever want to even see him again. He feared she thought he abandoned his kids, which he knew he would never do. He loved her so much and never wanted to hurt her. "I shouldn't have done it."
"Done what?" Bentley grew confused.
"She hates me now, doesn't she? I was such an idiot. I shouldn't have lied to her, or even touched her. I knew better."
"Carmelita doesn't hate you." Bentley tried to comfort his best friend about his whole situation. He couldn't imagine how Sly must've been feeling. "She actually took your disappearance the hardest out of everyone. I checked up on her as much as I could, and one day she responded to me and said she was pregnant. She was scared, but she isn't mad at you."
Sly felt tears filling his eyes, but held them back as much as he could. "She had to raise those kids by herself, Bentley."
"Well, you're partially wrong about that." Bentley smiled a bit. "I decided to step up and help her out as much as I could. To them, I'm their favorite uncle."
Sly smiled at his best friend. "You didn't have to do that."
"Yes I did, Sly. We're family after all, and families look out for each other."
Skylar approached Sly, unaware of what he and Bentley were talking about. She sat down next to him and didn't speak a word, instead wrapping her arms around his neck. She felt as if she had known him all her life. Sly didn't mind, almost unable to keep his tears held back. He felt he had known her all her life as well. He wished his son would just come and hug him too, but he knew this had to have been a huge shock for him. It was a huge shock for Sly after all.
"I am so sorry." This was all Sly could manage to say to his daughter, who was clearly unbothered about growing up without a dad. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there."
Skylar felt tears roll down her eyes. "It's not your fault. I knew deep down you didn't abandon us. Mom took care of us, and uncle B. I'm just glad you're here now." She stopped hugging him and looked up into his eyes. "Hopefully I won't sound awkward, but can I call you dad? Please?"
Sly laughed a bit at her ridiculous question. "Of course you can."
Silvester quietly emerged from hiding and looked at his sister sitting next to their dad. He smiled to himself and pushed away his fears about him. "Hey." He muttered quietly, still a bit nervous.
Sly stood up and approached him. "Hey." He smiled nervously. "I'm not bad, trust me."
Silvester didn't respond and hugged his dad as hard as he could. He couldn't understand why all his life their mother did not talk about their dad much. He was so relieved he finally had met him, letting all of his anxieties melt away as he was hugging his father.
"I guess you changed your mind?" Sly said, trying to breathe.
Silvester stopped hugging him. "Oh, sorry. Guess I forgot that you can crush someone hugging them."
"Man, you and your sister are strong. She tried to suffocate me too!"
Silvester laughed. "Oh she's stronger than me, trust me on that. We just missed you. We've always wondered about you."
Skylar stood up and looked over at her brother and Sly. "What is it like being a professional thief?" She asked without thinking.
Sly raised an eyebrow. "A professional thief? That's a bold question."
"Well, mom never told us much about you. We only found out recently you were a thief." Silvester nervously stated.
Sly felt a mixture between confusion and anger. "Wait, your mother never told you about me?"
Bentley intervened quickly to try to comfort his friend. "No, we did. Carmelita was…you know concerned. She didn't want them committing crimes, well what she deemed crimes anyway."
Sly drooped his whole body down with a huge amount of disappointment. "So…she is mad at me. Why didn't you tell them?"
Bentley sighed. "Carmelita feared they would copy you and go to jail. She worried an extreme amount about that. I don't know why you'd be surprised, you know how she is. I wanted to explain, but I was asked not to. I wasn't going to hide you, but nobody ever asked about you around me, like ever. I didn't want to just bring it up, I didn't know what to do."
Sly's heart broke hearing his best friend explain this. Bentley was right, he wasn't at all surprised Carmelita had felt this way. He just felt disappointed his own kids had no idea who he really was. He wasn't even sure what they even knew at this point. The last thing he wanted was for any of his children to grow up in the dark. They deserved to know about their legacy. He even felt a bit of anger thinking about it. "I can't believe you would do that to me, Bentley. Do they know anything about me?"
Silvester tried to intervene to help his father feel better. "No, dad. Mom just didn't want us to become criminals and be in jail. She told us about you, just not the thieving part."
Skylar groaned. She remembered discovering everything about her father and felt angry. If their father was feeling angry about all of this, she felt he had every right to. "Silver, you know as well as I do mom didn't bother to talk at all. I don't know why. She thinks jail actually scares us."
Silvester furrowed his brow. "It scares me. You're easy to influence. Maybe she just didn't want you to get stupid ideas."
"You think not knowing anything stopped me? News flash, it didn't. You can't hide blood, Silvester. Mom was being selfish."
"You're still mad about this?" Silvester growled, now very angry at his sister. "Let it go. Mom told us and we're here now. Dad is here, now things can go back to the way they're supposed to be."
"No. I'm not going to let it go." Skylar crossed her arms. "You're always defending mom. For once, I'm not. She deprived us from our legacy. We could've found our dad sooner if she would have just TOLD US."
Sly was taken back at their argument, unsure who to side with or who was telling the truth.
"You're stupid ass got arrested today!" Silvester pointed his finger at Skylar. "You aren't the great Cooper if you even tried to be! You did what you wanted to do. That has NOTHING to do with our dad or our mom. She didn't want you to get arrested and go to prison when you got older, or me. She's a cop, Skylar. I'm sure she would've known what prison is like."
Skylar fumed with anger. "Stop defending mom!" She yelled. "I got arrested by accident. If anything it was uncle B's fault! I was trying to do the right thing and bring our family back together. I-"
"Just shut up!" Silvester yelled while covering his ears. "Who the hell cares? Now that dad is back, you two can just go thieving together and get arrested. I don't care."
Skylar got into his face and turned bright red, fuming with an extreme amount of anger. "Wow. So you don't care about dad now? Why are you here then? You know you wanted him back just as badly."
"I'm here because of you!" Silvester screamed back. "I'm not a thief and never will be! Mom did the right thing by hiding it from you, you stupid raccoon. I want to go home, I don't want to be here! You just had to go steal that stupid statue from the museum so you could come here and get thrown in jail. I'm tired of breaking the law. When we get back, you know we are both going to be an extreme amount of trouble." Silvester was letting all of his emotions take over. He was only here for Skylar, and honestly if he had to choose he would choose to side with their mother. He knew she was only protecting them and he wished Skylar would realize that.
Skylar stormed off from her brother, refusing to accept anything he was saying. She approached another piece of the cave and turned back to him. "You are the most selfish person I have ever met." She accused. "You only care about saving your butt and that's it. I did what was right. I found our dad. Mom had no right to take that away from us, and you know that." Skylar started to cry the hardest she had in a while. "I hate you."
Silvester stood quietly watching his sister disappear into the room. He had no words for what she had just said to him. It stung him hard, though. The worst thing he feared was his sister hating him, and that was now happening. He wanted to apologize, but at the same time he didn't. He felt his sister was wrong about their mother.
Sly had no idea how to respond to the situation either. Everything had happened so fast, but at least he got the answers he wanted. He couldn't understand why Carmelita had hid who he really was, but listening to his son he could start to understand why. Skylar was right though, Carmelita had no right to hide him and his legacy from them. They are his children too.
Bentley was in shock as well hearing their argument and felt an extreme amount of guilt hearing Skylar get so angry about not knowing their father. He knew he should've ignored Carmelita and told them the truth a long time ago. Now, his decisions were catching up fast. He tried to conjure a plan to fix this, but couldn't come up with anything. One would figure to fix all of this all he has to do is just go back 10 years so Sly could help raise his kids, but that would tear a hole with time and open up a whole new set of problems.
Just as if nothing had happened, Murray emerged from hiding in a room with a huge hot pizza in his hands. "Man, thanks for grabbing those frozen pizzas, Bentley. I was starving."
"Yeah. No problem." Bentley said disappointedly. He wheeled slowly into another piece of the cave, disappearing behind the walls, leaving Sly alone with Silvester.
Sly looked over at his son, who now looked like his face was just covered with depression. Hearing his sister say she hated him hurt him worse than being stabbed in the back. Silvester didn't know how else to make his sister realize what the reality was for her, and he felt bringing Sly back was just going to make things worse. He never spoke about this, fearing exactly this. He hoped in his heart maybe the crimes might end when their dad comes home, but he knew that was a slim chance.
Sly sighed. "Carmeltia didn't tell you two anything, did she?"
Silvester looked up at his dad. "She was just protecting us. Skylar is not an angel. She's always up to something, usually just stealing what didn't belong to her. Mom feared she…or me…were going to end up in prison. She explained all of this to us."
"Maybe we should talk to her." Sly suggested. He had no idea what to do, and he also sided with Skylar, but he didn't want to start problems with his son off the bat.
"I'm not." Silvester crossed his arms. "She hates me, there's no point."
Sly was unsure how to respond to that. He didn't understand either of their ways of thinking. He wanted to say Skylar certainly didn't hate him, but he didn't really know that. The last thing he wanted to do was lie to his son, or to anyone. He figured that got him into enough trouble already. "Well, I guess I will. I just want to know what is going on."
Silvester sighed. "If you want, I'm not stopping you. I'm just telling you what is going on. Mom hid the real you from us."
Sly ignored this trying to avoid favoring anyone with this situation. He started to go to the little room Skylar had disappeared to, hoping she'd talk to him at least.
Murray was confused about what was going on. "Is everyone okay?" He asked, still holding the pizza.
Sly looked over at his best friend. He didn't bother to ask what his role was with all of this, figuring whatever it was he was just neutral with everyone. After all, Sly knew Murray. Murray doesn't get involved with things like this, at least not willingly. "Yeah, pal. Just trying to adjust to everything." He slowly continued to walk over to the little room, knocking on the wall to get her attention.
"Go away." She groaned, not emerging from the room.
"Nah, you don't want that. I thought you wanted me to come back." Sly smiled slightly.
"Come in."
