Chapter 10: Figuring Stuff Out

After they drove to the ranch, Alex grabbed Charles pent leg with her teeth, asking him to follow her.

Anna couldn't stop her laugher at that.

Charles followed her to her room and opened her door for her. After she got inside, he closed it.

Before he left, he could hear her starting to change back. He flinched. It was too soon, and she was so young.

'Alex it's too soon my little wolf,'

'I can't be a wolf while I need to talk. Can I punch Hosteen?'

'I am afraid not,'

'Please?'

'I am sorry, but no. call me tonight? On the phone?'

'I will,'

As her change was done, she felt Bran slipping away from her head, but through their bond she could feel his love, his affection, his comfort for her pain.

Alex took a shower and put on jeans and a red T-shirt.

She tied Bran's hoodie around her neck with its sleeves and went down to the dining room.

"Sorry I am late, takes a while to shake off the fur and tail," she smiled.

Chelsea looked at her and managed to smile a little.

"Are you cold?" asked Hosteen.

"No,"

"Then why…" his voice trailed off when he noticed her glare. "Never mind,"

Alex took a seat next to Michael, the smallest child of the Sani's.

"You are the tiny wolf, right?" asked Michael.

"I am,"

"Will you get bigger?"

"Maybe a little, but not much," she smiled.

"I liked your tail," said Michael.

Max leaned forward to look at her, "yeah, me too,"

"Thanks guys," she grinned and winked at Charles and Anna. Bran will love to hear that someone like their white tipped tails.

Anna and Charles smiled.

After cleaning the dishes and sending the smallest kids away, they sat to talk about what happen, until Chelsea collapsed.

She will sleep for a little while, they knew.

"Alex, are you coming with us to see horses?" asked Charles after Kage came back from taking his wife to a bedroom.

"Not tonight. I am going to call Bran, and go to sleep, or maybe I will watch over Chelsea, nothing more." Said Alex.

"O.k. call me if you need me," said Charles.

"Will do, thanks. Have fun, and good luck," said Alex.

"Thanks," said Anna and they left.

Alex went to her bedroom and climbed to her bed.

"Hi, my little wolf," he answered after the first ring.

"Hi," she whimpered.

"Hey… don't cry, I can't hear you cry, especially when I am too far to hold you," he soothed.

"Sorry," she cried.

"Shh… it's alright,"

"Can you sing to me?" asked Alex.

"Sure. I looked in to that song you sang to me at Christmas, remember?"

"Let her go by The Passenger?"

"Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you
let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you

let her go
And you
let her go

Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you'll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you'll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies

But you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you

let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you

let her go

Staring at the ceiling in the dark
Same old empty feeling in your heart
Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast

Well you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
Cause you loved her too much and you dived too deep

Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you

let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you

let her go
And you
let her go
And you
let her go
Well you
let her go

Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you

let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you

let her go

Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you

let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missing home
Only know you love her when you

let her go
And you
let her go…"

He sang the whole song.

"I love it when you sing…" she sniffled.

"I love it when you sing too, you have a lovely voice," said Bran.

"I want to go home, but I can't, not when there is a fae hunting little kids," said Alex.

"You had a rough day, tomorrow will be better," said Bran.

"Hope so," she sniffled.

"It will be, you will make it better," said Bran.

She took a deep breath.

She started getting out of bed and to the hallway on her way to Chelsea's room.

"Where are you going?" asked Bran.

"Watch the new wolf," said Alex.

"Are you sure you are up to this?" asked Bran as she opened Chelsea's door.

"Yeah, I can't sleep anyway," said Alex.

Hosteen looked at her.

"O.k." sighed Bran. "We will talk tomorrow?"

"Yeah, good night hon'," said Alex.

"Good night my little wolf,"

They finished the conversation.

Hosteen gave her a soft look.

"Are you o.k.?"

"Yeah," she pulled the hoodie to hug it in her arms, to breath Bran's scent in as she sat down on the floor by Hosteen's chair.

"It's Bran's, doesn't it?" asked Hosteen.

She just nodded.

"You are a young mate, that is the reason it so difficult for you to be away from your mate," he said softly.

"I really want to go home," she whispered.

"Then go, we can handle that without you,"

She shook her head, "the fae threatens children, I can't just go and forget about it, not until he is dead,"

"If that's what you want to do, then man up and stop crying about it,"

"I am a girl, I won't man up, why would I want to be a man? You're all morons," said Alex with a frown.

"Amen to that," said Anna that just came in.

After a small conversation with Maggie, they change places, Maggie left, and Anna took her place.

Hosteen huffed about that.

Alex tuned their conversation out.

Her eyes' lids dropped, and she fell asleep against the wall.

'you need to get out of there. The witch-born doesn't always make the transition from witch, to wolf easily. If she was strong enough to hide herself from Charles's wolf, then she's strong enough to be dangerous. Strong enough to hide if she is a dark witch. Charles is coming, but you all need to get out of there right now.'

Bran talked in their heads.

Alex was in deep sleep; she didn't hear any of that.

Charles rushed to the room only to stop by the entrance. Kage, was right behind him, but walked in, to his wife.

Hosteen was by the wall, on the floor slurring his speech and giggling.

After Chelsea went back to sleep and Kage escort his grandfather to a room and came back to make sure his wife will be alright, and then went to bed himself, Charles was able to change his attention.

"What's wrong with Alex?" asked Charles.

"She misses Bran for a start, and she fell asleep earlier, I don't know if she was affected by my power or not," said Anna.

Charles nodded and picked sleeping Alex from the floor.

"Charles?" she asked sleepily.

"Yes, little wolf, it's just me, you are safe. Sleep," he whispered to her and took her to her bedroom.

Alex woke up to the noise of conversations from the kitchen.

She took a shower, and got dressed, black jeans, and green T-shirt.

Alex took her swords with her and went to get breakfast.

She sat next to Charles.

"Good morning, how are you doing?" asked Charles.

"Fine," said Alex and started nibbling on her food.

"We are going to ride more horses today, want to come?" suggested Anna.

"I think I will stay here, train with my swords,"

Max looked at her from across the table.

"Can you teach me?" he asked.

"Sure," she smiled.

"Can we watch?" asked Mackie.

"Of course," said Alex.

Kage nodded at her in gratitude and led Charles and Anna to the barn, to try more horses.

Alex gave Max a sword and showed him how to protect himself.

They were in a big guttering room, probably the pack guttering room.

"Use your ground to your leverage," said Alex and jumped on a platform in the room.

Max hit her sword, and the kids cheered.

"Nice, now keep coming, use your momentum, great,"

They dueled for a while.

"Alex?" called Charles.

"Guttering room," she called.

Anna, Charles and Kage came in.

"We talked with Chelsea, there is something in the day care the kids attending, we will check it out," said Anna.

"One minute," said Alex.

She flipped above Max's head, landing on her feet, she turned around and hugged him from behind, her sword across his chest and against his throat.

"Dead," she smiled.

"Not fair, that trick is werewolf's trick, I couldn't have jump like that," protested Max.

"Actually, it's a cheerleader trick, I did it before I become a werewolf," she grinned.

"Great, I was defeated by a cheerleader," grumbled Max.

Alex sheathed the swords. "For a first timer, you were great, you followed your instincts,"

She took the swords.

"Thanks Alex, it was fun," smiled Max.

"Sure," said Alex.

Then she turned to Charles, "give me ten minutes and we can go," he nodded.

They got to the day care.

Alex looked at the tiny kids with a soft smile.

"You o.k.?" asked Anna as they walked to the last teacher they needed to talk to.

"I didn't like the principle, but I am fine," said Alex.

She tuned them out for a while until a girl turned in to a bundle of sticks.

"What just happened?" asked Alex, alerted.

"It was a fetch, he mimicked Amethyst, the girl it was supposed to replace, it's magic," explained Charles.

"So where is the real girl?" asked Alex.

"Missing, probably with the fae," said Anna.

Charles called Bran, that told him to call the police and wait, to talk only to the right person.

Alex wandered who was the right person.

The police came, but they didn't believe much. The parents were… not very responsive.

Then came Cantrip agents, Marsden and Leeds. Cantrip was the federal agency that dealt with the supernatural.

Alex liked Leeds right away. He was a believer, the geeky kind that knew stuff, Marsden was the skeptical one.

Marsden seemed to lose his patience. Alex found it quite amusing and wandered if she should flash her eyes at him.

'What so funny my little wolf?'

'Cantrip agents,'

'Oh… those, they are kind of amusing most of the time, aren't they?'

'Yeah, they are,'

'Have fun my dear, but stay safe, there are worst then silly Cantrip agents out there,'

'I know. Miss you,'

'Miss you too, my little wolf,'

"What are you smiling about?" asked Marsden.

"I have the cutest boyfriend on earth," Alex grinned.

Marsden looked confused, while Anna and Charles made a face.

"There is nothing cute about him," said Anna.

"Hey! He is super cute!" protested Alex.

"Who is?"

Alex turned to look at the voice owner.

A lean, muscular black woman dressed sharply in a dove gray suit stepped into the room. "Special Agent Leslie Fisher, FBI. Sorry I'm late."

Alex tilted her head at Fisher.

She heard her exchanging some words with Anna.

'S.A. Fisher, FBI?'

'We worked with her before, Charles and Anna were impressed, and they worked good together, I figured it could work again,'

'Cool. I like her, I figured I should check with you if she is good,'

'As much as silly humans could be,'

'Not nice, old brat,'

'It's just the true. By the way, it feels like I am there with all of our little conversations,'

'Want me to stop?'

'No. It's good to hear from you,'

'O.k. let me know when you get too busy, I don't want to interrupt,'

'You are never interrupting,'

'O.k. I will talk to you soon, phone or otherwise,'

'O.k. good luck,'

'Thank you, hon','

"Are you back with us now?" asked Anna as Alex opened her eyes.

"Where are you in this whole thing?" asked Alex.

"Marsden and Leeds just become aware of what we are," said Anna.

"That's include me?" asked Alex.

"We thought you may want to have the honor," said Charles.

"Alex Morgan, I am dating Charles' dad," said Alex.

Anna could barely hold her laugher when she looked at the faces of Marsden, Leeds and Fisher.

"Who is also a werewolf, like me, and therefor looks like a kid in college," Alex clarified.

"Oh, that kind of make sense," said Leeds.

"Is it?" asked Marsden. "Never mind," said Marsden when Leeds was about to explain.

Then they started to talk about similar cases, and Alex tuned them out again.

"Alex," said Charles gently.

"Sorry. Where now?" asked Alex.

"We are heading to the Millers, Amethyst's parents, we can drop you at the ranch if you like, or I can give you money for a ticket home," said Charles.

"I am not leaving until the kid is back and the fae is dealt with," said Alex.

"And we will do that, but you don't have to be here for that," said Charles.

"I am staying," said Alex and got in the back seat of the car.

'What's wrong?'

'Nothing,'

'You're upset. What did I do?'

'Nothing. Not your fault,'

'Talk to me,'

'Not now, at home,'

'Fine,'

She could feel his frustration through their bond. She huffed.

"What did my father do now?" asked Charles.

"Nothing. Hey Charles, can I be on guarding duty tomorrow?"

"Sure." Said Charles as he parked the car.

"I should stay here,"

"As you wish, little wolf," said Charles.

At the house, Alex joined to the kids while Charles and Anna went to eat in the kitchen, with Kage and the werewolf that came to replace Hosteen, that went in to the desert to collect himself after what Anna's power did to him.

"Hi kids, mind if I join you?" asked Alex.

"Not at all," said Max.

Alex sat next to Max, and Michael climbed to her lap. She smiled and warped her arms around him.

Occasionally, Michael used her as a hiding spot, to bury his head when stuff on the screen become too ugly for him.

The next day Alex spent with the kids and Kage.

Eventually Hosteen joined them.

"I heard you are good with swords," he stated.

They were in the small arena.

"Yeah, martial art, is a hobby of mine, a lot of different kinds of martial arts," said Alex.

"Feeling like dueling?" asked Hosteen.

"Sure," said Alex.

She threw at him one of the sheathed swords, she made a habit of carrying them around, who knows when the fae will show up, and what kind of fae would it be?

"That's some fine sword," stated Hosteen.

"A gift from the Moor," said Alex and jumped at him with her sword.

He blocked her and tried to get through her defenses.

They dueled for a while, rode some horses, and then dueled some more.

Eventually the kids stayed with Kage in the barn and Hosteen and Alex went back to the house.

They met with Anna and Charles.

Alex tuned them out for a while and then-

"Would you cut the crap?! Dominance drama it's not everything in life!"

Both Charles and Hosteen were on their knees.

'What's wrong? You pulled on my power, are you alright?'

'I am fine, sorry. Lost control for a moment,'

'O.k. what's going on with the fae and the kid?'

'They found the kid, she is o.k. kind of, the fae is still MIA,'

'Call me later? We can talk, or I can sing to you again, if you like,'

'I will love that,'

'O.K.'

She sighed to the feeling of love that came from their bond.

"Sorry guys, I wasn't intending to use Bran's power on you, it was an accident," said Alex.

"All good," said Hosteen as he and Charles stood up.

"Why don't you join us for a late dinner?" suggested Anna.

"I am not hungry, I am heading to bed, good night," said Alex and turned to the stairs.

"Good night kid," said Hosteen.

"I never saw such a young wolf so depressed, hell, I haven't saw a young girl that depressed," said Hosteen after Alex was out of hearing range.

"She misses Bran, it was a mistake for her to come with us, when she is so new to this life, so new to her mate bond," said Anna.

"She is tough; she will be alright. Any one that can keep up with my father, will be just fine,"

"Well, you do have a point," said Hosteen as they went to the kitchen.

Alex was laying in her bed after a long shower when her phone rang.

"You didn't call," Bran was whining over the phone.

She giggled.

"I love you so much you know?" asked Alex.

"As I love you, my little wolf. Want to talk about what's going on with you?"

"No. Would you sing me to sleep?" she asked.

And he did.
