Chapter 67: Trial Five - Part One

Mildred was self assured of herself after the Exams were over. She found herself knowing quite a few of the questions, and really hoped for a good mark this year! She had tried her best, and Hecate seemed to believe she'd do well.. And really, She'd know! She did finalise all the exams after all.

Before Mildred knew it.. It was the day of the Last Trial. No one quite knew what that meant for the Two final witches. Battle to the death perhaps? Sure would make it interesting, but not at all safe. This Trial morning, She'd awoken to a knock at her door. "Come in..?" She sounded out.

Hecate opened the door slowly, stepping into the room, Looking as put together as always. Mildred smiled at her. "The Bell will be sounding in Half an hour, after Breakfast will be the assembly." She informed her, lingering slightly. "Would you like any aid before the bell gose?"

Mildred peered at her Mother figure.. Something about her asking her, made her feel that she'd need it.. Maybe this was her sly way of telling her what to expect. She should look nice.. "I wouldn't mind you doing my hair.." Mildred confessed as she got out of bed, rubbing her eyes. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair has been annoying her for a while now..

She looked at the likes of Ethel. Always prim and put together, she was the shining example of an up and coming witch. Hecate.. Never had a hair out of place, everything was perfect. Pippa was fabulous. Enid was neat, despite her personality. Even Maud's bushy hair was always tame and ready to go.

Her hair was always a mess.. Before brushing it, it was freezy and untamed, afterwards, she had a set period to do something with it, or it'd just look like she'd woken up again. It was a war she'd never win! "Maybe.. I should get it cut at some point.." She said absentmindedly. She's admittedly let it grow and grow with no thought as to when to stop it. She wasn't a little kid anymore! She was a growing and budding young witch..

"How about we deal with one change at a time." Hecate spoke as she moved closer. "Should you still feel that way come summer.. You may cut it to whatever length you desire." Maybe it was best she leave it till Summer, Mildred was never great with impulse decisions.

Millie nodded, taking hold of the hairbrush and holding it out to the awkward looking Hecate. "Work your magic, Please." She gave her the sweetest smile she could muster. No reply came from the only witch, just a hum before she got to work. She Delicately platted the hair into a pretty braid behind Mildred, which she then threw over the young girl's shoulder, Only adding to the style of it.

Afterwards, Hecate made her way out, leaving Mildred to change for The day. She'd already laid out her clothing, making sure it was clean, cat hair free and crease free. Once she was 100% Sure she was ready to go, she made her way to the Hall. There was nothing special about it. A Few of the girls, including Sybill, Wished her good luck in whatever Trial Miss Cackle would have them partake in.

The closer it got, the more her nerves began to rear their ugly heads. "Don't worry, Millie. You're up against Ethel, it's hardly a competition at this point." Enid says as she shoved way too much porridge into her mouth, just aiming to get it down as fast as she could.

"But Ethel has the background to back her up.." Maud contracted, not aiming to hurt Mildred, just being a realistic approach in all this.

"But Mildred has Miss Hardbroom and Miss Pentangle.." Felicity chimed in, seemingly more interested in their conversion than in one with her other friends.

"I'd take HB over Miss Hallow any day.." Enid shudders at even the thought. "HB's hard but.. Miss Hallows just.." She didn't even need to finish that sentence for the others to understand the sentiment.

"I think it comes down to what the final task is.. Any clue?" Maud asked, aiming the question at Mildred.

She shook her head slightly. "I'm not sure.. Maybe another quiz, or something like that." She took a stab in the dark. All she knew, she needed to look nice. That wasn't a lot to go off.

Thankfully, Breakfast soon ended, and the girls were ushered into Assembly as the bell rang. Every Girl was sat in order of year. The First years were right at the front, while the Fifth years were right at the back. For once, the only teachers on the stage were Miss Cackle, Miss Hardbroom, and Miss Pentangle. All the others lined the sides of the halls. Mildred and Ethel were brought to sit on the stage, front and centre, as Miss Cackles Podium was brought to rest right in the middle of the stage.

"Welcome, Welcome!" Miss Cackle folded her hands in front of her, looking over the students brightly. "The Year is close to the end.. I have a delightful announcement to make in regards to that. In True Pentangles Fashion, we will be having an end of year party!" That only erupted the hall into cheers and chatter. Mildred felt an automatic sense of joy, Last year's party was so much fun! "Before that, Your exam results will be coming in.." She chuckled slightly. "And before any of that.. We still need to find next year's head girl."

Finally! The Part they'd been waiting for. Though Mildred was still happy about the previous news, but this felt far more important at this moment. "Today, The Head Girl will be announced.. The Trial is as follows. The Head Girl is not only a symbol of this school, she represents its heart, its future, its past, and its pupils. For that reason, Each girl is about to give a speech, to convince the students and teachers, why they should be head girl."

A Speech.. No one prepared her for any public speaking! How was she going to rally the troops? Suddenly, a cold sweat began to form on her brow, moving it's way down her face and neck. She let out a sorry sight.. Maybe she wasn't cut out to be head girl after all. "Afterwards, every student and teacher will get a Vote. Now, Please welcome, Ethel Hallow."

Ethel Stood up, and struts to the podium, as if that's where she'd always belonged. "Thank you Miss Cackle.." She spoke directly to the Headmistress before turning back to the rest of the school. "As you've heard, Im a Hallow. We are known for our leadership skills and fine witchery. There hasn't been a single Hallow not to be Head girl here.." She boosted with a smirk. "I am a promising witch that will bring glory to Cackles. Would you truly be able to sleep at night with someone from a non-witching background as your head girl.." She threw a side glance at Mildred, It was turning into a smear campaign. "I will see that this school will only have the very best witches in our halls.. Oozing with pride instead of mediocrity. That's why you should stay away from Hubble Trouble, and Stand with Hallow!" It felt a lot like she had that planned.

"Thank you, Ethel.." Miss Cackle said, as the students clapped politely. "Now.. Please welcome.. Mildred."

She was so screwed.
