Chapter 12: The Mentalists

Lily Dale, New York

I remember it like it was yesterday.

"You need to stay away from Lucifer. I won't have you get hurt on my watch," Sam said as I got into my car and rolled the window down to look up at him.

"You don't have to tell me twice. Lucifer gives me the creeps," I said with a shiver.

Sam smiled at me.

"What?" I asked noticing his strange look on his face.

"I'm just….glad you're taking this seriously," Sam said. "Are you sure about Lily Dale though?"

I nodded. "Perfectly sure. It was my mom's maiden residence. She was the psychic in the family after all."

"Okay," Sam sighed.

"I'll miss you," I said suddenly.

"It'll be over before you know it," Sam said. It sounded like a promise, but I had my doubts it would be over quickly.

"Just promise me you'll be careful?" I pleaded.

"Always," he gave me an assured smile that seemed way too forced for my likings.

I never saw him after that until now. Until my co-worker told me there was a hot guy seated at number 12. Told me I could take it because I was in desperate need of something, whatever he was talking about. Maybe he was right. It'd been months, no scratch that….two years of not being with someone. I never felt comfortable with anyone else in this world other than Sam Winchester.

I drew in a deep sigh and let it out before I made my way over to his table. I smoothed out my uniform. He must've been here on a case. He was dressed up in a suit, hair pulled back slightly behind his ears. I did hear of one lady getting killed in town, but I thought that was some sort of freak accident.

I pulled out my notebook ready to write. Waitressing was my part time job here in Lily Dale. The other was my own psychic reading set up. Neither paid much, but it did keep a roof over my head and food in my belly.

"Well, well, Sam Winchester, in my town," I said as I stopped by his table. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

He looked up from his file in front of him. I stared into his piercing eyes as they roamed over me.

"Just coffee, black, extra shot," he said.

"That's it? That's all you have to say?" I asked. "After three years of no contact? No letting me know how things went with Lucifer, you know the psycho that wanted me for himself?"

Sam didn't say anything. He shifted in his seat and shuffled the papers in the file. This was not the same Sam I was used to. Something definitely changed within him over the passed couple of years. He did seem more confident; I'll give him that. He was going through something.

"Right okay. Coffee, black, extra shot," I said and walked away to go get the coffee he ordered.

I walked back over to the coffee station and started to make his drink. My co-worker slid over next to me, wanting to indulge into my private life.

"Ah, so how did it go?"

I didn't answer.

"That bad, huh?"

"It's been three years since I've seen him. No contact, nothing. It's weird," I said.

"Yeah, weird."

The coffee was finished and so I went to go take it over to him, that's when I saw Dean sitting across from him, looking handsome as ever. He hadn't changed a bit. I placed the coffee mug in front of Sam's file that he was looking over.

"Hey Dean," I greeted with a bright smile on my face. It was always nice to see him.

He looked up at me and gave me a small smile. "Hey Kaylee. How's Lily Dale treaten' ya?"

"Okay, I guess. So, you're both here then?"

"Looks like," Dean said.

"And what can I get for you?" I asked.

"Uh, pancakes, side of pig, coffee, black," he said.

"Fantastic. You're a virile manifestation of the divine," I said and then cringed when Sam looked at me, giving me a look. "I'm sorry they make me say it to customers."

Embarrassed, I walked away from them and sighed, brushing a fallen hair out of my eyes.

A few moments later, I was leaning against the counter top just watching the two brothers talk. Their food had come out and I wasn't ready to go over yet to check on them to see if they were okay.

"Go," my co-worker whispered to me, giving me a side bump. I sighed and glanced at him.

"I don't know what to say," I admitted.

"Just ask them how they are doing and if they need anything."

"Okay," I said and pushed myself to walk over to their table. Dean was already in mid-bite by the time I walked over. "Hey, how is it so far, need anything else?"

"Nope, I'm good, thanks," he said in a mouthful.

I looked over at Sam who was still looking at some very gruesome pictures of killings that seemed to have happened around Lily Dale.

"Sam?" I asked.

"Fine, thank you," he said curtly.

I nodded. Right.

"Well, here's the check, whenever your ready," I said and took it out of my black book and placed it in front of them.

I walked back over to my co-worker and shook my head. "It'll be okay, honey, they'll be back."

I nodded at him as he walked away with a coffee pot in his hand for his table.

I just stared over at the table where the Winchester brothers were seated and blew a strand of my hair out of the way.

It was going to be a long shift…

It's been three days since I last seen the Winchester brothers into the café. They must've been working the case overtime. They finally came in through the doors and sat down into my co-worker's section. I didn't have them today, which was fine by me. I wasn't sure what Sam was up to, but it hurt my feelings a bit with such a cold response. I know hunting was hard, I get it. It took me some time to get used to being in one spot after all that's happened, after what I lost. I was alone. The only friends I had were my co-workers but even then they weren't really my friends.

I was pouring coffee for one of my customers when I heard a cough behind me. I stopped and turned around to see Sam standing by me, waiting.

"Sam," I breathed out. I almost spilt the coffee in front of my guest. I stopped and set the coffee mug on the table.

"Can we talk?" he asked.

"Sure," I said and followed him outside the café.

"Look, I'm sorry about how I reacted to you the other day. I was just…Dean and I weren't in the right space. And you're right, I should've called you to let you know that Lucifer was safely put away in his cage. He can no longer come after you."

I breathed a sigh of relief. "Well, that's a relief. So, what are you and Dean fighting about?"

"Just some girl…" he shook his head. "It…it's nothing. It happened and it's over with. I've made my peace with it, I think."

I nodded slowly, trying to understand him.

"This case has kind of reminded me that I need to trust someone and that someone is you. I'm glad you're here, and you're safe."

I smiled as he pulled me in for a hug that I had not expected to receive. I hugged him back.

"Can I be honest with you?" I asked, after pulling apart from him.

He nodded.

"I hate it here."

He quirked an eyebrow at me.

"I have no friends, no aspects in life. You and Dean are the only ones that truly understand my life. I can't even begin to tell people my past, or they'll just think I'm crazy," I said.

"Well, you can't come with us on a hunt, Kay," Sam said. "I won't have you die on my watch."

"You and Dean don't die."

Sam scoffed. "We've died before, twice."

"And yet you're back," I smiled at him.

"It's not that simple," Sam said.

"Sam-"

"Kaylee, no," he said. "Now I will tie you up to the bed if I could and leave you there. You have no idea what we're dealing with out there."

"What are you dealing with?" I asked.

Sam grimaced. He struggled what he wanted to say next as if he didn't want to answer me. "They're called Leviathans. Now they can be anybody. We've found what works to sod them off is borax."

"Borax?" I asked. "Why are you telling me this?"

"In case you come across one," Sam said.

"A Leviathan in Lily Dale," I laughed. "Yeah right."

Sam gave me a dark look. "They can be anywhere, Kaylee. I need you to be serious about this, please."

I frowned and looked at him with a soft look in my eyes and nodded. "Okay."

"Come here," Sam said, and I walked over to him, and buried my face within his chest. He smelt so good. I couldn't help but inhale his woodsy scent. I hugged him and he hugged me back tight.

"Promise me you'll take care of yourself," he pleaded.

"I will," I promised. "Just as long as you do the same."

"Always," he said.

A/n: And that's the end of that chapter. I didn't have her do the case because I didn't see much of a point adding her in. But, I got plenty of ideas for her in the upcoming episodes, especially with, It's Time For A Wedding. Can't wait to write that one! Hope you liked! Favorites, reviews, and follows are welcomed!
