Hugo saw the Palace of Justice before him. He held the strap of his bag tighter, 'ok this is it' he thought to himself. Walking towards the steps, he would then climb them. Up to the door, where he knocked. After a few moments, a soldier opened it.
Hugo knew this was a soldier, by their purple, red and gray uniform with black gloves. As well the helmet they wore, with their eyes covered in darkness. Even with the opening for them to see through. "Who are you? State your business." The soldier said in a commanding voice.
"Yes, my name is Hugo Pierre. I was told to come here, after being enlisted." Hugo replied swiftly. He handed the soldier the note he was given. The soldier took it and read it.
"It appears official and in order." The soldier said. Stepping to the side and opening the door wider. "Come in," they said. Hugo nodded and went inside.
The soldier closed the door behind Hugo. Stepping in front of him now, "I'll show you the way to the courtyard." The soldier informed him and began to walk. "Thank you" Hugo replied and would follow. All the while, Hugo would admire the architecture.
On the walls, hung some purple and white banners. Two of them had crosses on. There were portraits too, some had sites of Paris. While the majority was of the Minister of Justice, Judge Claude Frollo. Hugo thought, "A lot of portraits for just one man.'
The soldier finally stopped walking, Hugo stopped beside them. The soldier pointed over at a group. "There's the regiment you'll be with. The 31st, commanded by General Jules. Now get going" the soldier ushered Hugo.
"Got it, thank you again." Hugo replied and would walk over to the group. There were flower beds on both sides of him. As he neared, he saw that the group was training. The General, who was a white, muscular, hazel eyed man. Caught sight of Hugo first. He was being attentive to his surroundings.
"Well, well, well. Looks like we have a new recruit, men." General Jules said at first. His gaze went to his men who had stopped. "Attention!" He barked, his men stood up straight.
General Jules' gaze then went back to Hugo. He waved him over, which Hugo obeyed. "Now recruit. I want you to face your fellow soldiers and introduce yourself." The General explained.
"Very well, General" Hugo responded to the General. He faced his comrades, "hello everyone. My name's Hugo Pierre, I'm 19 years old. I can't wait to be doing my part with you all." He said happily.
"In that case Hugo, you've come to the right place for doing your part. Paris needs you and your fellow soldiers more than ever." General Jules said at first. "Go to the soldiers quarters to put your stuff away. Then to the armory to get your uniform and weapon."
"Yes General" Hugo said to the orders. General Jules looked at one soldier. "Private First Class Dubois, you are to escort Private Pierre." General Jules said to him. A white, skinny, blonde, blue eyed boy gave a salute. "Understood, General."
Dubois walked over to Hugo, "follow me, Private." Hugo followed Dubois, back into the palace. The soldiers quarters were quite big. There were cots and bags that filled the room. Hugo picked a cot that was closest to the door. Not liking the middle, with the feeling of being surrounded.
Now with his place and bag being settled. Dubois would lead him to the armory. Hugo was amazed and wide eyed, seeing all the weapons and uniforms. "Go ahead and pick," Dubois said and gestured to the room.
"I will" Hugo responded and went inside. Getting out, he had his uniform, helmet and sword. "Now you can go change in the quarters. I'll be waiting for you at the entrance of the courtyard." Dubois explained. "Alright, see you soon sir."
Hugo replied and went back to the quarters. He remembered the way back there. Dubois was about to go get Hugo, after some time had passed. Thinking that the Private had gotten lost. That wasn't the case.
Hugo emerged in his outfit, sword in hand. The Private First class couldn't help, but smile. "Wow, you definitely look like a soldier now." Hugo smiled back, "thanks, sir". Dubois shook his head, "none of that sir stuff with me. We're both Privates, I just have some more experience than you." Dubois said with a chuckle.
"What am I supposed to call you then?" Hugo asked curiously. "Just call me Gabriel, or Gabe for short. Of course in front of the General, say First class." Gabriel answered. "Ok then Gabe" Hugo said. "I have a feeling that we'll get along just fine. Stick with me Hugo, I'll show you the ropes. Let's go back to the others."
Gabriel said with a smile. "Me too, Gabe. Oh and I'm definitely going to. As you said, you know more." Hugo replied with a chuckle.
Flash back*
A little girl, with brown eyes and black hair. Wearing a red dress, ran to another young child. This child was a boy with ginger hair and green eyes. The boy had on a custom made soldier uniform.
He bent down to hug her. "What's wrong Charlene?" He asked gently. "I'm scared about going on stage tomorrow at school. I feel as if I'm going to do bad." Charlene answered.
The little boy looked Charlene in the eyes. "Look lil sis, you won't do bad. You know why? Because me, mom and dad will be there. I believe in you." He told her.
Charlene felt consoled by him and smiled. "I believe that and in me too now. You do know best and more" she said. He let go of her and stood up. Not going far, he picked a flower from the garden.
Going back to her and kneeling. He placed the beautiful daisy in Charlene's hair. Charlene giggled softly, "it's pretty. Thank you Hugo" she hugged him again. Hugo hugged back, "anything for you Charlene."
End of flashback*
In the city square, the three Beaumont siblings were enjoying their day. It was easy to see that they weren't like the common folk around them. The oldest sister, Amélie, was a white brunette, with black eyes. Chloé, the middle child, was white, with black hair and eyes. Their younger brother, named Leo, was white with brown eyes and black hair.
The three found it fascinating to see life. Through the perspective of ordinary people. Amélie, who was the oldest, lead the two to a tavern. Leo was hesitant, but Chloé went with her sister without question.
The people in the tavern saw the two women in blue and yellow long gowns with sleeveless tunics and wimples to cover their hair. Amélie wore blue shoes, and Chloé had yellow shoes. While Leo had on a brown jacket with a hose, leggings, breeches and brown shoes.
The three sat down at a table. Amélie ordered the drinks, and the three began to talk. One of their discussions became a bit too loud. "We already don't follow the status quo with just being here." Chloé told her sister, and Leo nodded in agreement.
A few patrons overheard the siblings. They started to laugh. Even though they were drunk. They could still reason that it was best to be the follower. The siblings decided to leave the establishment. Chloé payed for the drinks.
