Chapter 4: Not Built to Break

Still inside the Sully dwelling:

The prayer is now complete. "We're happy to help you. We will leave you now. Eywa is with us always," Ronal said as they left them alone.

Kiri stood up and walked over to the entrance and thought of Spider's words to her before he left. "He's coming home and soon; I know this."

Neytiri stood by. "You know this, but how?"

"Come with me." They watched out for Tuktirey then walked further away. "I need to tell you everything that happened during the Tsaheylu with Spider and me; there's more."

"Go ahead, tell me all of it," Neytiri said worried.

"I saw Grace, my Mother, but it wasn't the first time. The first time I saw her but she disappeared before she had the chance to tell me, and that's when the seizure happened. The second time, she appeared calm and not afraid and then she told me."

"Oh, I see, but what did she tell you?"

"You may have had suspicions about who and what I am." At her look of surprise, she continued. "She said 'I am with Eywa and you are too.'" She paused. "It explains the heartbeat and the voices ready to speak to me; they feel mighty. At first, I thought I was losing my mind, but the power and voices that I feel whenever I hear her, it's there waiting to be heard."

Neytiri could think of nothing to say then pulled her close holding her tight for a few minutes then pulled away. "You are right, I did suspect it, but it seemed impossible to believe. I understand now that you had no choice what happened to you. Eywa has blessed you with her voice and power to help whomever you can."

With shining eyes, she said. "I haven't told Spider all of it, but I will when he comes back; I know he'll come back to all of us. He told me he wants to end it and I believe him. Eywa is with him; that I believe."

"Were you a little afraid to tell him, but kept it to yourself?"

"Yes, only a little, but at first, it's me and no one else, but Spider broke through and we fell in love. I will tell him."

Before she could reply, Tuktirey came to stand with them and took Kiri's hand. "Can we say another prayer?" She asked and they joined hands. Kiri spoke another prayer then waited for their men to return home safe and well.

The deserted campsite:

It took time, but Jake and Lo'ak arrived a mile away as not to startle them. They moved through the brush quiet and alert coming closer, then they saw them and listened for the right moment to reveal themselves.

"Why did you bring me here?" Spider asked his father. He thought he heard something; it sounded like an alert; he realized his family is here.

Miles didn't answer him but turned and picked up his shattered skull in pieces, and caught a glimpse of arrows and feathers, then he asked a question, staring at his scattered bones. "You want to kill me; don't you?"

He answered him truthfully. "Yes, you have no idea how much."

That took him by surprise and turned to face him. "Why do you want to kill me; I've done nothing to you?"

"You killed my brother; you tried to kill my father twice; you kidnapped me and took me away from them; they are my family," he replied furious with him.

"Family, but I am your father."

"You don't know the meaning of the word. A true father would not kidnap his own son then force him to watch you commit unspeakable crimes against innocent people." He paused. "My mother died the same day that you did, and if not for you, she would still be alive. It's all your fault." He tried to calm down but he needed to say it.

His eyes widened but he ignored his crimes. "You know about her?"

"Yes, I know."

"But how?"

"I found out through the RDA. As I grew older, I asked around," he replied only partly true.

He nodded. "I see, but your mother was one amazing woman. Her name was Paz Socorro, a Spanish gem; she was out of my league but we connected before the war; she was also brilliant and a cunning warrior but she did not survive." He sounded sad.

"You must have loved her a little?"

"Love… I don't know the meaning of the word, but she let me in and you were conceived." He paused thinking of the past "I never knew about you; she never told me."

"Are you speaking the truth?" He could not believe it.

"Yes, it's the truth."

"You wouldn't know the truth if it stared you in the face. You need to listen to me. You said you see, but that's exactly the problem. You don't see me or any of the Na'vi, and because of your failure to see anyone, all of this needs to end. The hate and anger towards my family; you need to stop. You will leave my family alone. They need to live without fear that you will come there and try to hurt them again." He paused. "I'm over 18 and I know what I want." He paused again. "I've found love and she's in love with me too." He watched him carefully.

He ignored his hateful tirade. "You found love? Was she the same Na'vi girl standing next to you? I've seen her before."

"Yes, she's the one. Her name is Kiri and she's the love of my life. I'm never going to leave her, not ever."

He had a thought. "That's why you came with me, to end all of it?"

"Yes, she's the only reason I came here with you. We need to end this right now."

He turned from him and walked away and glanced at his broken skull and bones. My son hates me, he thought. "I see but this is not the end, not now, not ever." He paused then turned to face his son. "Nothing is over while I'm breathing." He told him firmly then he slowly reached inside the leg holster for his gun and pulled it out.

Jake glanced at Lo'ak and gave him the signal. They raised their bows and fired striking Miles in the chest and he fell over… dead.

They rushed over and pulled Spider close, relieved they came for him.

"Dad, Lo'ak, I'm so happy to see you," Spider said close to tears.

"We had to come and decided to wait," Jake said. "Are you Okay? We heard all of it."

"I'm Okay." He glanced at the dead man then said. "He wanted to kill me?"

"Yes, he did but his last words did sound familiar," Jake replied, then, "He still hates us even though he's one of us."

"No, he's not one of us, never has been," Spider said.

They watched him staring at the dead man. "Do you want to say anything?" Lo'ak asked.

"No, let's go and we'll leave the past behind us," he replied and followed them.

Now walking towards their waiting banshees, Jake still felt worried about him. "Are you sure you're Okay? What are you thinking?"

Eyes shining, he found the words. "When I heard the signals that you were here watching us, I felt relieved and grateful you came for me. I've never had anyone to protect me, care for me and love me. Thank you both."

He touched his shoulder. "It's true we are family. We had to come and Kiri can't wait to see you."

His mood lifted at the sound of her name. "I can't wait to see her too."

They left the deadly scene and headed home.

~o~o~

Flying over the beautiful water, they arrived home and at once they saw their family on the shoreline waiting for them.

Spider is the first to jump off the banshee and pulled Kiri into his arms happy to be with her again as they hugged tightly both crying, excited to be able to be together again.

She pulled away and touched his cheeks with both hands. "You're home, you're back!"

"Yes, I'm home, come here!" He said and pulled her close again. "I'll never leave you again, I promise and I mean it this time and all our days in the future."

"I believe you, all of our days… and nights," she said and then kissed him passionately not caring who saw them.

Jake shook his head and ran to greet his wife and sweet daughter. The first to greet him after he jumped from his banshee was Tuktirey. He picked her up and kissed her cheek happy to see her again.

"How's my little Tuktirey?" He asked and smiled.

"Dad, you're back," she said and pulled him close. "I'm not little anymore."

"No, you're not," he said. She'll be ten and soon, he thought.

Neytiri watched them with a smile. Jake set Tuktirey down as Neytiri came closer and held out her arms and he's in them in a second. "Home at last," he whispered in her ear, eyes closed and then he kissed her deeply, loving her beyond any rational thought.

Meanwhile, Lo'ak saw his friend Tsireya standing nearby and he came closer and took her hand. They walked further away but she wanted to ask how it went, but she waited for him to speak. They sat down in their favorite spot.

Lo'ak turned to face her. "I'm glad you're here."

"Me too, but I was worried, everyone was worried, but now you're back and I'm happy to see you." She paused, eyes shining. "We prayed for your safe return."

He closed his eyes thinking of prayers and it did help them. "That's nice to hear."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"In a little while, but I wanted to talk about you and me and our parents."

"Alright, we are friends but what about our parents?"

"It's just, when I heard Spider and his father talking about their lives, but it's hard to explain," he said and they sat there and thought of their lives the past few years. "To witness the hate and anger they felt for each other; my father is a tough warrior but he accepts that we are different and we have a lot of growing up to do." He paused. "It feels odd to sit with you like this."

She frowned. "You saw what happened?"

"Yes, it's over. Quaritch is dead, but Spider is fine. We had to kill him." He replied, stood up and walked away. She followed him and took his hand.

"I guess you do need to talk about it. You said you had to kill him?"

"Yes, my father and I had no choice, but the feeling is not a good one."

"I can imagine. We can talk about us if you want?" She asked to change his mood.

He turned to face her. "It's just swimming together felt like our spot, special to both of us, but I think we're more than only swimming together."

She looked down at their joined hands. "Yes, we are more."

He turned to face her. "We never talk about us, you and me; we are older now, and." He hesitated.

Surprised he would say it. "Us, we are, but you and me?"

"Yes, Reya, you and me." He paused. "You've never thought of us that way, I mean, together as a couple?"

"Reya, no one else calls me by that name but I do like it." She paused. "To answer your question, no, I haven't thought about us, but you had thoughts of us as more than friends?"

"Yes, I have but not while we were younger, but now." He hesitated then watched the water thinking we're the same age, and the words 'I see you' remained in his memories of them years ago.

"What are you thinking?"

He squeezed her hand. "I'm thinking it's time we talked about us." He paused. "I know it may feel scary to even think it, but it feels good that our parents do get along. Your father seemed ready to accept me as a person with a brain, but mostly because we are friends."

She chuckled. "Yes, I agree it is scary, but the brain part; you're smart and nice." He did appear excited but waited for her to think about it; decision made. "It's true, we do need to talk." She gave him a smile.

He smiled in return. Holding hands, they watched the water and continued their talk.

On another stretch of beach:

Kiri and Spider are happy and excited to think of nothing else but being together and loving every minute of it. After a long swim, they left the water, running and catching each other in a warm hug. He pulled away and watched her face.

"Happy?" He asked smiling.

'What do you think?" She pulled his head down and kissed him deeply. He kissed her back. After a minute, she pulled away. "Are we still too young to have these feelings?"

Instead of answering her, they sat down in their favorite spot. "No, we're not too young but yes we can't control who we love and we love each other. Age has nothing to do with how we feel."

She nodded. "Our parents are strict but they're right, we need their guidance with issues like this."

He sighed. "You're right; we do need them." He paused. "We can talk about what happened with Quaritch and how it ended."

"It's over and done?" She paused. "Is he… dead?"

"Yes, he's dead."

"Did you kill him?"

"No, Jake and Lo'ak killed him with arrows. He threatened me with a gun and that's when they killed him."

"Oh no, he wanted to hurt you?"

"Yes, but before that, we spoke of my mother and how they met."

"Your mother, but that must have been emotional for you." She took his hand.

"Yes, we spoke of her but he did sound sad about her death. He told me her name. He also said that he never knew about me. She's gone now."

"I'm sorry but now you know what happened to your mother. Do you feel sad that you never met her?"

"Yes, I'm sad about it. I tried to explain to him that he never saw us the way we see each other." He paused. "But yes I told him about you and me that we love each other. He seemed upset that he never had someone to love him. Then he said that it would never end for him or for me, that nothing is over while he's breathing, and that's when he pulled out the gun."

"I'm sorry you had to go through that but I'm glad it's finally over."

"Me too." He pulled her close and kissed her; she kissed him back, pulling her to lay on top of him. They had the same idea, her head on his chest stroking his strong arms and wide chest.

"I know what you're thinking; we're too young," Kiri said disappointed.

"Yes, but I'll be 19 in a few months and you'll be 17 soon and maybe our parents will let us take that next step."

"What are you talking about?"

"Our future and what we mean to each other. Look, another year and we can do whatever we want." She did appear confused. "Tsaheylu, our queues together, you and me."

"Our queues together, but where did you hear something like that?"

"I heard our parents talking about it and it does make a crazy kind of sense," he replied getting excited.

She shook her head. "I don't know about that; it sounds dangerous."

He frowned. "It's not dangerous; they had no issues with it and we should do it together when we're older. Eywa could help us decide what to do."

"I guess that would work, but we need to tell them first; I promised to tell them if we did it again underwater." She smiled at his face. "Speaking of that, I need to tell you what I saw during Tsaheylu a few months ago."

"Was there more; you told me about Neteyam?"

"Yes, there's more. I saw Grace, my Mother whose still in a coma. She told me that she's with Eywa and I am too."

"Wow, then that explains the seizure and your powers?"

"Yes it does, but are you repulsed by it?"

"No, not at all; I love everything about you and I always will."

Eyes shining, she whispered. "I love you too. I see you."

He smiled. "I see you."

They both smiled and kissed again.

A few days later, now standing before their parents, they confessed that they in fact did Tsaheylu together underwater a few months ago.

Jake felt stunned then glanced at his wife. "Did you know about this but didn't tell me?"

"Yes we decided to keep it a secret for now. They were not hurt by it; they're stronger and older, and Spider was curious about it."

He took a deep breath to calm down and thought of her words, but he did not tell his wife for years about Kiri and what she had told him. "I see, but can we not keep secrets from each other?"

She took his hand. 'Yes, no more secrets." She smiled to lighten the mood.

"Are you guys Okay?" Kiri asked worried.

"We're fine," she replied and watched them appear nervous. "Are you thinking of doing it again?" Neytiri asked.

They glanced at each other. "Now that you mention it." Spider began.

"You're thinking of doing it again together? But why?" Jake asked worried.

"After he returned from what happened at the campsite, we're concerned about our future and Eywa could help us," Kiri replied.

"But you know the past, not the future," Neytiri said.

"Are you sure Eywa cannot predict the future?" Kiri asked.

"No, I've never seen the future only the past?" Jake replied then he thought about it. "Wait, I do remember asking Eywa for help before the war years ago, and she did help us before it happened. I guess we could look at it as a future occurrence because it hadn't happened yet."

"Yes, I remember that moment, and you're right. Eywa heard you Jake. She protected the balance of life and she saved many lives that day," Neytiri said remembering.

"Then it's true that it could work for us as well?" Kiri asked getting excited.

"Jake, we can't stop them from asking Eywa for her help."

"Okay, you can do it but older and wiser is always a good idea," Jake said but they knew what he meant.

"Yes, we can wait a little while longer," Spider agreed.

"We can do that," Kiri also agreed.

"Good, now go and have some fun; don't think about the future only the here and now," Jake said and gave them a look.

Hand in hand, they left to do exactly that.

They turned to each other and he touched her cheek. "I learned a few hard lessons the other day after we saved Spider."

"Oh, please tell me what you learned."

"I learned that not all humans are evil, and that not all Na'vi are good."

She pulled him close. "Hard lessons indeed."

Epilogue, one year later:

It's now been five years since Lo'ak and Tsireya met by the water. She taught him how to breathe and to ride an Ilu without appearing like an amateur. They continued to see each other as a couple, not only being friends.

They rode every day and they enjoyed it. He would visit with her family and fences continued to mend. Her father saw him at first as immature. He did sense his need to feel not like an outsider but as a friend and he decided to give him another chance.

Lo'ak knew of friendships and how they could blossom without even thinking about it, and in their case, it did. Their friendship has grown, but they're all right only being friends for now.

~o~o~

Kiri and Spider hand in hand moved through the island as they watched the beautiful scenery, the flowers, the water all of it loving what Eywa had revealed to them.

Eywa revealed to Kiri, not only the past but her future. Kiri saw her mother Grace again and she told her daughter that as she grew older, married with children, that she is destined to become the most important spiritual believer as Tsahik of their clan.

Eywa revealed to Spider, not only both his parents no longer with them, but that he will be a father one day, but also that he would grow stronger in his beliefs not only in Eywa but one day as liaison between humans and Na'vi.

Now as they lay together in their own dwelling, he kissed her cheek holding each other close, both enjoying having the greatest connection between them, not only Tsaheylu but they will become one having sensual closeness as to become parents one day.

The end.

A/N: I wanted to continue this story in many ways, but this is the end for now. Thank you for taking this journey with me. Kiri and Spider have a future together, there's no question about it, and I slipped in Lo'ak and Tsireya too. Please let me know your thoughts on this last chapter or any others you may have read. Thanks again.
