The Ultimate Detective and The Ultimate Hope Gaiden: Hana's Surprise!
Chapter Three: Telling the Parents!
"P-Pregnant…?" Shingi stammered, turning his head and staring in shock at Hana.
For her part, Hana had turned completely white, realizing that the outcome she had dreaded had come to pass. Reading the room, the doctor understood that, far from being the good news they had billed it as, it was a terrifying shock to the couple in front of her.
"I'll…leave you two to talk while I make a copy of your tests…"
As soon as the doctor closed the door behind them, Shingi spoke. "Hana…did you know…you were expecting a baby…?"
Drawing a shaky breath, Hana shook her head. "No…I had my suspicions this morning…when I put together my cravings and mood swings and the morning sickness. But I…I hoped I was wrong…" She turned to her boyfriend, tears in her eyes. "Shingi…what are we going to do? We're not ready for a baby…we didn't plan on a baby!"
Shingi sighed, admitting, "You're right, we're not ready…but I don't know what to do, Hana! I just found out that I'm apparently going to be a father. I haven't had time to think about how I feel about it…"
Hana grimaced, unable to refute him at that moment. With her maelstrom of emotions, she couldn't say anything about her feelings other than that she felt woefully unprepared.
"So…what do we do…?"
Shingi frowned, not liking the fact that he didn't know the answer himself. This wasn't a problem a box of chocolates and a loving kiss could fix, and he knew it.
"I think…we need to consult our parents…" Shingi finally suggested. "We need the advice of more experienced hands in this. Right now, we're about as good as the students we teach, so we need teachers to guide us right now."
Hana nodded, though she bit her lip. Though she had met Shingi's parents before, and found them to be by and large reasonable people, she didn't particularly relish the idea of telling her own strict, conservative parents. Nevertheless, she admitted that Shingi's idea made sense.
"You're right…you're right, Shingi. Okay, once the doctor comes back and we leave, we'll each head to our parents' houses and tell them. Then we can meet back up at our apartment and discuss what to do."
Shingi threaded their fingers together and squeezed her hand, flashing her an uneasy smile. "Hana, it's going to be okay. Whatever happens, we'll get through this surprise, alright?"
"…Okay, Shingi…"
"She's pregnant?" The young man's mother exclaimed in surprise at the sudden news.
Seeing his son nod, the father sighed and scolded, "Honestly, Shingi, what were you thinking?!"
"…We weren't…" The young father-to-be admitted, shoulders slumped. "Everything just happened so fast…we were both so happy that we had both gotten our dream jobs, then one thing led to another and…"
The young teacher blushed as he remembered the romantic, lustful night that led to his current predicament. The last thing he wanted was to discuss his sex life with Hana, though given the recent surprise, he supposed at least mentioning it was unavoidable. His mother, thankfully, frowned in sympathy.
"How's Hana taking this? She must be as shocked as you are, I imagine…"
Shingi nodded. "She turned as pale as a ghost when the doctor told us the news. She doesn't know what we're going to do…to be honest, I don't know what we're going to do, either."
"…Do you want to be a father, Shingi?" His mother prodded, catching her son off guard.
"Huh?" I've never really asked myself that question…how could I, with everything going on… "W-Well…I do love working with all the kids I teach. So…at least on paper, it's not a concept I outright oppose."
His mother nodded. "And if Hana decided she wanted to have this baby, would you support her and your child?"
"Without question, Mom. Why are you asking me these things?"
"She's trying to get you to come to a decision on whether or not you want to have this baby." His father clarified. "I'll be frank, I'm not happy that you acted so irresponsibly, conceiving a baby without planning for them. But…" He sighed, admitting, "You're a grown man and can make your own decisions in consultation with your girlfriend. If you and Hana decide you want this baby…then your mother and I will support you."
"Dad…Mom…"
Tears of joy streamed down his eyes, awestruck by his parents' acceptance, even if it was tinged by shock and disapproval. As he searched his soul, Shingi finally came to the answer he sought.
"I think…I think I do want to be a father…if Hana decides to keep the baby, of course."
Both parents nodded in approval, his mother advising, "Remember, you and Hana need to make these decisions together, as partners. Your father and I are willing to give you counsel and assistance when you need it, but ultimately, you need to come to these decisions in unity."
Shingi smiled. "Yeah, I know, Mom. Dad, I know I screwed up, but I'm gonna make things right, I promise!"
His father finally cracked a smile. "I know you will, son. You should go, meet up with your girlfriend, talk with her, and decide together how you'll move forward."
Standing up , Shingi bowed gratefully. He turned and marched out his parents' door, eager to talk with his girlfriend about their future and come to a decision about their new baby together.
"NAN DA TO?!"
Hana cringed at the simultaneous outbursts from her own parents. Unlike Shingi's parents, who she knew would be stern, yet supportive, her own were red in the face, radiating pure fury.
"What the hell were you thinking, Hana?!" Her father seethed. "Didn't we raise you better than this?!"
"I…I didn't mean for this to happen…I swear…"
"Alright, let's all just calm down…" Her mother suggested, trying to reign in her husband's anger. Once he had calmed down, she turned a disappointed eye to her daughter and scolded "Hana, how did you think you could risk getting pregnant like this? You and Shingi aren't even married."
I…I wasn't thinking… Hana silently admitted to herself, wincing at the memory of how she had instigated the sexual encounter that lead to her current predicament.
"This is completely ridiculous…" Her father muttered. "If word gets out that our daughter is going to have a baby out of wedlock, it'll bring dishonor to our family. We'll be a laughing stock!"
Can't you think of how I'm feeling and not your reputation amongst our neighbors for once?! A frustrated Hana thought to herself.
"I agree, this has to be dealt with." The mother nodded, turning her attention to her daughter. "Have you and Shingi decided what to do about this pregnancy?"
Hana gulped, admitting, "Well…not yet…we only just found out the news this afternoon. We decided we'd seek our parents' advice on this before-"
"You want our advice?" Her father barked. "Terminate it posthaste."
T-Terminate?! Hana's blood ran cold as ice. I know I told Shingi we weren't ready to have a baby…but to actually hear it said out loud…
Her mother nodded. "That seems to be the most prudent course of action." Her eyes softened, her voice growing softer as she addressed her daughter. "Hana, our beautiful flower…I know it must sound harsh, hearing it come from someone as gruff as your father. But think about this. You just started your career, and you two aren't even married, let alone have enough space to raise a family."
Hana grimaced, realizing her mother was right. Their apartment, though sufficient for the two of them, didn't have the space to put a nursery.
And my job…if I have to go on maternity leave this early…who knows if they'd let me come back after I give birth…
"You're just not ready to become a mother, and if word gets out that you're having an illegitimate child, that stigma will stick with you. It's best to abort it now while you still can. There will be plenty of other opportunities for you and Shingi to have a family after you're married and have your own house."
Hana couldn't deny the logic in her mother's argument. Even if she did have a single Truth Bullet in her arsenal, she always found her parents intimidating, and tried to avoid arguments with them whenever possible. As a result, even if she found the thought of terminating her unexpected pregnancy cruel, she couldn't stand up to her parents' demands.
"…Okay…I'll tell Shingi…and I'll…make an appointment at the clinic to…terminate the…pregnancy…"
Her parents nodded in approval. "Make it posthaste." Her father advised. "The sooner you two deal with this, the better it'll be for the both of you."
With shaky legs, Hana stood up and lumbered out of her parents' home. As she walked to the train station, she dreaded telling Shingi about the decision that had essentially been made for them.
How am I going to tell Shingi this? How am I gonna tell him that he doesn't even get a say in whether we start a family?
