"After the giant racoon monster destroying Japan, and the guy who was eating his mother's hair that was actually spaghetti, I have to say… that's interesting." Oveyus said, crossing his legs.
Many of the students were in quite the state of turmoil, desperately trying to make sense of their dreams. One girl rushed to his office in the middle of the night convinced she would have to give up her firstborn in order to graduate. Another asked him how likely it was that her hair would turn into snakes because she dreamt that she'd turned her date into stone.
The class ran over the time limit and even Draco had to give Oveyus a hand. Draco was sure he wasn't qualified to interpret dreams, especially since he couldn't even discern what his own dream meant.
The last students finally left after Oveyus promised that he certainly was free to eat before noon, and that he wouldn't lose any limbs because of it. They both sat exhausted, but Oveyus still managed to get Draco to tell him about his dream the night before.
"What do you know about that charm?"
"The Patronus?"
"Yeah, I've never heard of it," Oveyus said, getting comfortable in his seat.
"It's not a spell that's really taught. I mostly know of it because many of the Order had to use it during the war, to combat the dementors."
"Dementors… seems like it should be taught in DADA, no?"
"Not everyone can cast it," Draco said thinking about his own attempts to cast it. He'd only tried a few times, but never really got the hang of it.
"How come?"
Draco hesitated then, it wasn't something he really wanted others to know about him.
"Dementors are inherently darkness, manifested as cloaked beings. To fight it, a witch or wizard must use a force that manifests light. To do that, the castor must use a–"
Draco wasn't sure why it hadn't clicked before, but a new realisation made him sit up straight in his seat. Oveyus looked at him expectantly.
"Use what?"
"A happy memory."
"And this happy memory helps them cast an animal that fights the dementor?"
"Yeah." Draco answered him idly as he sorted through what this might mean. "The apparition… you think it could have been the memory she was using to cast the patronus?" he turned to Oveyus who just shrugged. Draco scowled at the man and tried not to get too upset at his indifference.
"What? You said the charm uses a memory and the apparition looked like it was coming from her head right? So yeah, maybe."
"Maybe? Are you sure you are qualified to teach this subject?" Draco slouched back into his seat riddled with doubt once more.
"Either way, that's not how dream interpretation works. You're taking everything at face value. You have to read in between the lines, in between all the obvious stuff. What happened in the dream that doesn't make sense when you're awake?"
Draco replayed the dream in his mind and started listing off anything unusual.
"I couldn't hear voices, just the enchantment that Granger cast. Everything stood still toward the end, well everything but her memory stood still. Oh and toward the start, the students kept getting in between us, like they were blocking me from seeing her work."
"Interesting." Oveyus tapped his chin with a pensive expression. Draco waited with hope that Oveyus might come up with some kind of answer to this puzzle. Instead he shrugged again and said, "I wonder what that means."
Draco's chest deflated. It really felt useless talking to this man sometimes.
