Bella was up first in the morning like normal. She was used to waking up earlier than Eric because her body was just built that way. It didn't matter how tired she was the night before; she was always up by four in the morning. She eased out of bed and got dressed, taking a short moment to freshen up in the bathroom, before she left Eric sleeping on her bed naked. She walked across Dauntless, going towards Max's office. Everything was quiet at this time in the morning. Five in the morning typically only saw who was on patrol; those schedules already went out in advance, so there wouldn't be any hiccups with Max being gone. She stopped outside his door and sighed before she walked in. The emptiness of his office was deafening when she stood there. She looked at his chair that he once sat in and noticed how big a chair it was. She would have to take on a lot of responsibility and she had to do it fast. Things would become chaotic for a while. She would have to follow orders from Jeanine and in addition, figure out a way to take her down without too much upset.
She sat down at the desk and was still for a moment. She looked around at the files around her. There was a computer that was off at the moment. She decided to boot it up and take a look at it. She shuffled through the files on the desk and found a key under a pen cup that went to the drawer on his desk. She opened it and saw that there were files on everyone in leadership. She flipped through them, finding Eric's and pulled it out. His picture was on the front page. What he looked like when he first came to Dauntless. His hair had been longer. It made her smile a little. She flipped the page and then frowned. Her eyes zeroed in on the date of the paper. It was dated three days ago.
Eric Coulter-Divergent
That was all she read and it suddenly hit her. Max had known way more than he let on. She scrambled for the other files, pulling hers out and flipping it open. Her picture was in there from her first arrival and then a picture of her when she changed. A list of her skills were noted; a list of all the Divergent children she had 'killed.' No where in her file did it say Divergent. She set it down and pulled out Four's. Nothing. She took out Noah's and then Rosalie's and scanned through theirs. Nothing. She shook her head and found Jasper's file and pulled it out. She scanned through it.
Jasper Whitlock-Divergent.
"Shit." She muttered and pulled Lukas's file out. She scanned through it, noting that his father was Jeremiah Coulter. But Lukas took the last name Andrews, but she realized that was because of his mom. Jeremiah died on the wall, protecting from Ravagers. It was a breach and it happened the year before Eric transferred out of Erudite. But Lukas's file didn't have him down as being Divergent. She opened the other drawer and found the files on all the recruits. She pulled Al's and saw Divergent in his file then Tris, showing that she was a Divergent sympathizer. She pulled Christina and Will's and nothing was in there hardly. Christina hadn't even been moved to the leadership pile. The dates on Jasper's file showed that Max knew that he was Divergent before he fast tracked him to leadership. The computer booted up finally and she saw there was a password. She sighed and looked through his top drawer, finding something scribbled on it. She figured it was the password and she tried it and it worked. It was just a mix of letter and numbers so Max likely wrote it down so he wouldn't forget.
She clicked through files on the desktop, her eyes scanning everything, but there was nothing that indicated there was anything Divergent related on there. She looked at the trash bin and then opened it. There were transmission logs. She opened them up. There was a transmission that was encrypted, but Bella knew that the secret to the encryption was the scrambled letters in the password. It took her a few minutes, but she was able to recover what the transmission was about.
Eric is Divergent. I confirmed it with the device you sent. I scanned him without his knowledge. Your intel was correct. -X
Very well. I'll handle it. -C
Bella frowned. C…. She shook her head and clicked through more transmissions. She found from another source.
Have Bella take the children. I don't want Eric doing these anymore. I believe he's mentally not handling killing children well. See to it that she's elevated faster in the ranks. -JM.
Bella studied the initials. JM had to stand for Jeanine Matthews, which meant that C was for Caleb. It didn't make sense otherwise. Caleb knew that Eric was Divergent. He didn't need Max to tell him. Unless Caleb intercepted the transmission so Jeanine wouldn't know. The transmission was dated four days ago. That meant that Caleb knew that Max knew. That's why he set it up for Bella to bring Max's body to him. Not Jeanine. Caleb was working on something and she didn't know what it was. She leaned back in the chair as she thought about this. "What are you up to Caleb…" she murmured out loud to herself.
After a couple hours, the city wide transmission system kicked in. The alert was everywhere now.
[Begin transmission]
Citizens of Chicago. If you don't know me, I am Jeanine Matthews, Erudite leader. Sometime last night, the Dauntless leader Max James was murdered. His body was dropped off in Erudite anonymously. At this time, we believe that his killer is Eric Coulter, a Divergent and part of Dauntless leadership. Worry not, my dear people of Chicago, Eric will be brought before Candor for justice. In Max's place, Bella Prior will be leading Dauntless, leading the charge in search of Eric. It is believed that he had help by another Divergent, Jasper Whitlock. Divergents are evil. They seek only to harm and destroy everything good that has been built here in the city. Divergents will be purged from the city, and we will do it, one by one. Until then. Stay vigilante Chicago.
[End transmission]
Bella stared at the screen in disbelief. "What the fuck." She cursed as she stood quickly, pushing the chair back when she did. She grabbed her palm pilot as it rung and she saw it was Jeanine. She answered. "Ma'am."
"I trust you saw the transmission. I apologize this is short notice. I need you to arrest Jasper Whitlock and Eric Coulter and bring them to Erudite immediately." Jeanine's voice sounded in Bella's ear.
Bella swallowed. "Yes ma'am. I will gather them now." She said, making her voice sound cold and disconnected.
"Good." Jeanine said and hung up.
Bella wanted to scream, but she took a couple deep breaths, before she heard the knock on the door. "Enter." She said loudly.
Rosalie entered the office and shut the door behind her. "Bella."
"Rosalie." Bella nodded and then grabbed her weapon and clipped it to her side.
"This isn't right." Rosalie said. "How did they find out?"
"Find out what Rosalie?" Bella said and then stacked papers neatly on the desk.
"About Jasper and Eric." Rosalie said and Bella stopped and looked at her. "I know. I'm not Divergent okay, I just knew. I've known Jasper for a long time. I was Amity before I switched. I know I seem like a bitch most of the time, but I knew about Eric and Jasper. My mom is Divergent, and I just-"
"Stop." Bella held up a hand. "The way you're talking is treason Rose. Right now, I am ordered to find Eric and Jasper and bring them to Erudite. So, if you see Eric or Jasper…that is what you tell them and detain them."
Rosalie nodded, understanding what Bella was saying. "Okay. Yes ma'am. Want me to get Pearce?"
"No. Get Tori."
"Why Tori?"
"Just send her to me." Bella said.
Rosalie nodded and left the office, leaving Bella in her thoughts. A few moments later the door opened and it was Four.
"Four-"
"I've alerted Eric and Jasper. They're leaving now." Four said. "What happened?"
Bella shook her head. "Max happened. He knew that Eric was Divergent. He sent the information back to Caleb. I guess Caleb double crossed us. He told Jeanine after he had me eliminate Max. They're pinning it on Eric and Jasper. I don't fucking know why, I just know it happened. Jeanine called me. I'm supposed to take Eric and Jasper to Erudite. They need to get out of the city and they need to do it fast."
Four couldn't believe it. "Fuck. Okay. They're leaving now. That was the first thing they did. Eric is a mess though he-"
"It's too risky for him to come and see me. He needs to leave. I'll get word to him when I can. Go Four, now." Bella rushed him and Four left, going to make sure that Eric and Jasper were leaving. Bella wanted to put a bullet in Jeanine's head and she would make sure she did it too. That she was the one to end Jeanine and she had a few choice words for her brother too.
