Eric woke up that morning to Bella not in the bed, which wasn't unusual. He was content with where they were. They were moving past Max, moving past the mistakes they both had made and going towards a better future. When he got out of the shower this morning, he was met with the transmission going out of Jeanine. Suddenly, it felt like everything around him was crumbling. He froze, his thoughts going straight to Bella. He had to make it to Bella. He had to tell her that they could fight this. There was heavy knocking at his door next door, so he grabbed his gun quickly and he peeked out Bella's door. He saw Jasper. He whistled, Jasper came to Bella's room and they shut the door quickly.
"What the fuck is going on?" Jasper said quickly. "Why is Jeanine outing us? How did she find out?"
Eric shook his head. "I don't know. There has to be a mole somewhere. We don't have time for that we-"
There was knocking on Bella's door and Jasper moved to it cautiously, drawing his weapon.
"It's me." Lukas's voice came as a sharp whisper.
Jasper opened the door and Lukas walked in. "Do you know what's happening?"
"I don't know. The transmission is on repeat everywhere." Lukas said. "You two can't be here. You have to leave the city now before you're taken."
"I have to see Bella." Eric said. "I can't leave without her."
"I'll get a message to her." Lukas said quickly. "Start getting ready to leave. I'll be back." He said then he looked at Jasper a second and then framed his face and kissed him hard. The kiss broke. "I love you." Lukas said, smoothed Jasper's hair back.
Jasper nodded. "I love you too." It was the first time that they had said I love you to each other. He watched Lukas leave quickly. He looked at Eric. "Come on, take what we need." He said and went to the closet in the room and grabbed Bella's duffle from her closet. He went into the bathroom into the cabinet and started grabbing first aid supplies. He knew that her bathroom kept stuff like that. Especially since she had been recovering recently from a leg injury.
Eric hesitated, but he went to the desk and grabbed the pen and started writing on the paper.
Bella, there isn't enough time to write everything down or enough words to tell you how fucking sorry I am. Things are fucked right now and if by some chance I don't get to see you again, I love you. I love our babies and I'll do everything I fucking can to make it back to you. To see Jeanine burn for everything that she's putting us through. Don't lose your will, keep going strong. Don't come back for me. I'll come to you. I love you so god damn much.

It didn't take long for them to get what they needed when they were met with Four. "Four." Eric began.
"Bella said to go. Don't come to her. It's too dangerous. Get out of the city now. She's trying to field responses right now. I imagine she's about to get overwhelmed." Four said. "You need to get going now. I'll take care of her Eric. I promise."
"Four, she's pregnant." Eric breathed out.
Four stopped. He knew that something was up, he just didn't know what. "I'll look after them. Now there's not much time." He said and handed Eric an encoded palm pilot. Like the one that Carlisle uses to talk to George and the others.
Eric took the palm pilot and looked at it. His heart felt like it was breaking in half having to leave like this. He just nodded and looked at Four before he hugged him in a brotherly way. "Thank you."
"Always." Four said, Eric pulled away then him and Jasper ducked out quick with what they had to make the first train out of Chicago.
Eric and Jasper jumped off the train into the water below. They were quiet as they got to shore. Jasper could tell that Eric was stewing about having to leave the city. The only place to go was the Divergent city. Even then it was possible it was all compromised at this point. But they had to go there. It was the safest place for them at this time.
By the time they made it to the city, the sun was starting to peak. There were more ravagers this way more than normal, so that worried Eric. The last ravager was definitely too close to the city. The first thing that alarmed Eric was the smoke billowing up into the sky. That was not a good sign. He glanced back at the city. They were still far from Chicago, but the smoke was indication that someone was alive out here if the patrols could even see it. Eric couldn't remember if he saw it coming off the train from the wall.
Eric unholstered his weapon and so did Jasper, as they eased into the city. "Shit." He said as he lowered his weapon. There was fire set to some of the buildings that were standing. Someone or something did this. He brought his weapon back up as him and Jasper eased through the city. They checked the hospital first and Eric had to cover his mouth. Death. Children. Dead. They just saw them a couple days prior. None of this made sense. They left out of the hospital and walked down the street, looking for any survivors. When they found more dead, Eric cursed and kicked over a trashcan.
"What happened here?" Jasper murmured.
"62 people Jasper. Most are dead. Mostly children. Where the fuck is George." Eric cursed as he looked around. George was missing, and so were a few others. The houses were all empty, except for a few people dead, but the kids in the hospital were all dead. There were thirty kids sick and all of them were dead. If there were any survivors, from what they saw right now, it might have been a dozen.
"Maybe they got out. George and the others." Jasper suggested.
Eric shook his head. "They didn't have too many weapons to defend themselves. Just what I could get to them. They had some guns, but… that was to hunt for food. Jasper, there's no way we did this. I would have known about it… right?"
"When do you think this happened?" Jasper asked.
Eric thought about it. "I was here two days ago with Bella. Everyone was fine then. Last night Max was killed, the day before Marcus. So…" he trailed off. "Unless that was the distraction. Who would give this town up?"
Jasper was quiet a moment. "Caleb." He said at the same time Eric did.
"Fuck!" Eric cursed again. "He had to find out the location of the city. Bella wouldn't tell him because she would assume he knew. He knew that I'm Divergent and you are. But why didn't he sell out Bella? Bella is running Dauntless now. I thought the plan was to discreetly get rid of Max. We got rid of Marcus, and… Jeanine said that Max was the leak."
"What if that wasn't Jeanine talking? Bella only got the message from Caleb. He send a message through Ty. The only thing that has actually happened is Bella taking over Dauntless after Max being killed. Caleb said that Jeanine wanted Max dead. Max told Bella that Jeanine wanted you dead. Which means that Jeanine already distrusted you before. Whatever made Jeanine place the blame on me and you, means it has to do something with Caleb. He had to tell her that we're Divergent."
"But why offer that information up? According to Andrew, Caleb is a part of this cause… Caleb is fucking Divergent. Why would he give up 62 people with half of them being kids. That doesn't make sense." Eric said, shaking his head.
Jasper wasn't sure why Caleb would do something like that either. "It has to be a distraction. Or maybe it's coincidence. What if the hospital suffered a catastrophic loss and something caught fire when they were trying to build the new system to help purify the water?"
"No. The way those kids were killed. All executed. The ones in their houses. Nancy, she was shot in the head. Laithe was shot in the head too. They were all executed." Eric said. He looked up at the sky. The sun was starting to get hot. "I know we can't stand around here. We need to get to safer ground. Whoever did this, might come back and we can't be here when they do. Grab what we find for supplies and lets head away from the city. Climb up into the ridge, towards the spring that we lost Al at. It's rough terrain and nobody is going to come looking there."
Jasper nodded his agreement. Right now they just had to survive until they figured out how to help Bella inside the city. Maybe there was hope that they found George and the others that were missing.
