Bella was starting to get a headache. A week had passed since Eric and Jasper were outed and she hadn't received word from Caleb yet. She was starting to get angry with him. Jeanine had been pissed that Eric and Jasper were able to escape before Bella had the chance to barge in and arrest them. There was no telling where they were in the city now. Bella knew better. She knew that they went to George. Communication was down right now because no one wanted to risk leaving the city in fear that it would throw up red flags to Jeanine that something bigger was at play.

"Bella, reports. Ten more Divergents were gathered today in Erudite. They're doing mass executions in the main part of Erudite's faction." Lukas came with the news. "Jeanine is making sure the entire city can see."

Bella sighed, leaning back in her chair and rubbed her temples. Lukas moved to help her, rubbing her temples for her. "I can't save everyone." She was beginning to believe that there had to be some sort of sacrifice in order to move forward.

"Johana has been quiet since the start. Jack Kang seems to be hesitant too. Neither are willing to come forward to say anything to stop Jeanine. Even your parents are quiet about the ordeal." Lukas said as he rubbed her temples.

"Send Four to Amity. I want him to specifically talk to Johana. Also, I want him to seek out Judith Hale. That's Rose's mom. I want her opinion on this." Bella said then stood, breaking the connection with Lukas. She turned and looked at him. "Tori is working on wall detail for now with Chris. She's not speaking to me right now since I kept George's secret from her. So, when you see her, let her know that I need her to move to inner city patrol."

Lukas nodded. "Okay… you need to slow down. At least take a few hours to rest. You haven't slept well since this started."

"Damn it Lukas, I can't stop. Everything is just crumbling. Eric and Jasper aren't here. The only thing keeping me going is knowing they're safe right now." Bella hated not being near Eric. She knew that Lukas was struggling with the same thing because of Jasper. So, she didn't say it. Lukas knew how she felt.

"Well, at least eat something. Even if it's small." Lukas said.

Bella sighed. "Okay. I will. Now, I've got a meeting with Jeanine in like fifteen minutes on the phone. "

Lukas frowned. "Do you want me to stay?"

"No, I'll be okay. It's not the first time she's called me."

Lukas just nodded. He knew that Bella was stronger than she looked sometimes. She was keeping herself busy, which was more about being distracted, than everything else going on. He kissed her forehead and gave her a small smile before he left the office.

Bella sighed and looked at the computer on the desk. She understood why Max always stayed so busy. There were so many things that required her to be there to make the city run. The work had to continue. Without it, Chicago would fall apart. She took a few deep breaths to settle her nerves a little as she waited for Jeanine's phone call.

Eric and Jasper made it to the ridge. It took them the better part of the week to trek that far. They saw no sign of George or the others along the way, but a downpour happened briefly so any tracks there could have been, vanished. Sweat seemed to pour off the pair as they made it to the spot where they lost Al. They paused, taking a moment to catch their breath in silence before they started across the gap. When they made it to the spring, relief filled both of them. Eric and Jasper drank deeply from the spring, thankful for the water. They ran out of water a day ago and it was extremely hard to hike under the heat without fluids. The only thing that seemed to keep them going was trying to stay alive.

"It's been a week." Jasper finally said after a long moment of silence.

"Yeah." Eric said, his voice rough. He didn't want to think about it. He kept thinking about the last time he held Bella. He longed to touch her. To stroke her hair, to kiss her. He was incredibly worried. The palm pilot that they had was silent. It would be risky checking in now. Of course they were worried about what was happening in the city, but they were also worried about what happened to George and the others. Eric played through it in his head the week's hike here to the spring. He didn't see George's body. He didn't see Jasmine or Oliver. Kids that he brought here to be safe. He didn't see Conner or James. Right there that was five people that potentially lived through whatever happened at the Divergent city.

Jasper took note of his silence, the pensive look on his face and he sighed. "You're thinking hard about something."

"Back at the Divergent city… where was the water?" Eric thought. There was no running water. The flow was stopped, the reservoir was empty.

Jasper frowned, thinking back. He didn't recall seeing water either. "Something damned it up in two days?"

"It's possible. Which means that George would go North to look for the source of the problem… He'd take Conner and James with him. They're both Dauntless born originally and they're trackers and hunters." Eric explained.

Jasper thought about that. It was possible that George wasn't even at the city when everything happened. "How many people did you say was missing."

Eric thought, counting. "Five I know for sure, but… I want to say more like eleven or twelve."

"Okay, so what if George went North with James and Conner and then someone else made it out with a few of the kids? Who would take the kids and run?"

Eric was quiet again as he thought about everyone there. "Jessica. Has to be her. She was Amity before. She's young. Like maybe a few years older than Bella. She was very nurturing. She used to be Dauntless before she transferred out to Amity. So, she has the skill she needs to survive and she would protect the children."

"She would have help right?"

"There were thirty kids dead in that hospital Jasper. Not that many kids made it out. Oliver and Jasmine yes… Danny I think and Sarah weren't among the dead." He sighed. "I don't know. I'm hoping they got out and they weren't…. drug off somewhere by ravagers. Which… we saw more going towards the Divergent city. More than there have been in the past."

"But that's usually because Conner and James probably take care of them. They're hunters, right?"

Eric hadn't thought about it like that. "Yeah… that's possible."

"Let's just hang on to that. Let's rest, get water here, take a day before hiking North. We might find George and the others that way." Jasper suggested.

Eric nodded. It's what they had to do. They had to be sure.

Four made it back from Amity and was in Bella's office, Lukas there as well as Rosalie. It was quiet a moment.

"Johana doesn't buy Jeanine's bullshit?"

Four shook his head. "No. She's been hiding Divergents for some time now. Judith helps her." He said with a nod towards Rosalie. "She's on the Divergent side. She is a peaceful person, but she wasn't always Amity." He reminded Bella that Johana was Dauntless before becoming Amity.

"So… she'll fight with the help of your mother?"

"Yes." Four said with a simple nod.

Bella sat there thinking. "That's why she hasn't come forward to address the issue." She blew out a breath. "Alright… Rose, how about Candor?"

Rosalie nodded. "I spoke to Sam Uley, Candor secondary. He's on our side too. Jack Kang is very good at figuring out lies. He knows that Jeanine is lying. He's not readily stepping in to help her. Her execution of Divergents under sixty percent in the middle of Erudite has left a sour taste in all their mouths. It's barbaric and goes against everything just and balanced." She repeated what Sam had told her.

"Good. That's very good. We have the upper hand now."

"We need to strike before too much damage is done." Lukas said.

Bella agreed. Too many lives had been sacrificed at Jeanine's hand. "Okay. The Dauntless simulation is going live tomorrow. The attack on Abnegation will take place. We need to find a middle ground there. Four, I want you to pretend you're in the simulation with Lukas. Rosalie will be by my side while we walk around with Jeanine. When Jeanine leaves, which I know she will. She won't stay for the executions, I want you to break your rank and knock Rose and me out."

"Bella, I can't hit you." Lukas said, frowning.

"Lukas, my face isn't pregnant." Bella said and looked at Rosalie. "We have to be able to stop any actual killing from happening. We'll stall. She's looking for a box that she believes is hidden in Abnegation. We will go to my parents house and question them. It'll stall it long enough for Four and Lukas to make it back here to Dauntless to the simulation room where Jeanine should be. I don't know if Caleb will be here or not, but if he is, don't hesitate to shoot his leg for being stupid."

Four shook his head. "I promised Eric I was going to take care of you and the babies. Leaving you behind to do all that… I'm risking you Bella."

"I have her back." Rosalie said with a sturdy nod. "I won't leave her side, not for a minute. I will be her shield." She promised.

Four looked at Rose, saw her small smile. He swallowed, nodding a little. "Okay." He trusted Rosalie wholeheartedly. He didn't even know she was a Divergent sympathizer. He was just fooling around with her for fun. After she came out as being a sympathizer, it made him look at her in a new light. "The plan is in place then."

"It is."

"Wait, what about Tori?" Lukas said.

"I need Tori in the simulation. She won't know… she's not Divergent so she'll actually be in the simulation."

"She really is going to be pissed off." Lukas said shaking his head.

Bella sighed. "I don't need too many hands on this. It'll get messy. The tighter the group, the tighter the plan. Now. Rest tonight, eat well. Hydrate. It's going to be a long day tomorrow." She said and dismissed everyone.

Lukas hung back like he always did. He was always checking on her mental state or her physical state. "Bella."

"Lukas, I'm fine. Tomorrow is going to be hard, but we'll get through it. Just… do your part and everything will be fine. The object is to kill Jeanine, don't let her leave Dauntless tomorrow alive. If she leaves alive, then we've failed the mission."

Lukas knew that, but he went to her anyways, his hands rubbing down her arms, taking her hands in his. "Bella… I love you. You know that right?"

"Of course I know that. I love you too Lukas."

"You are my family. You are carrying my nieces or nephews. I don't want you to get hurt. Please… if not for me, then please for Eric and your children, be careful tomorrow." Lukas murmured.

Bella looked up into Lukas's spring green eyes and she nodded. "I'm going to be careful tomorrow. I promise."

Lukas stared back, his eyes searching hers for that truth. When he was satisfied, he nodded before kissing her on the forehead. He pulled her into his strong embrace and just held her.

Bella took in a deep breath. Lukas's hug was everything she needed right now. She was missing Eric terribly and she knew that Lukas was missing Jasper too. Both of them were struggling with the same things. After a few long moments of the embrace, Lukas finally let go of her. He kissed her forehead one more time before he left her there in the empty office with her own thoughts.
