Author's Notes:
I do not own Library of Ruina or RWBY. These series belong to Project Moon and RoosterTeeth respectively.
Sorry if I took too long, college life ain't so easy and I mostly write at night. If you see any inconsistencies with the writing, that's probably when I had to stop writing to do college essays; I don't know if I'm getting worse at writing or getting lazier to write. Anyways, this is a short chapter, mainly a bunch of filler and dialogue. As I had said before, I came up with some interesting ideas to progress the story and hope that it turns out alright. Regarding Limbus Company, the game has been a surprise to me. I did not expect to enjoy the characters as much as I thought I would; Gregor, Rodion, and Ishmael definitely are my favorite characters. I'm around the third chapter, which is the latest chapter sadly, but the game so far has been entertaining (except when I can't choose my own targets, that's annoying). On the other hand, I finally got to watch the first few episodes of RWBY Volume 9. Without saying much, I'm pretty sure this volume will explore the deepest parts of the characters' desires and wishes, and I hope that nothing bad really happens (which it probably will). Either way, hope yall enjoy this chapter, and feel free to point out any mistakes I made about either franchise.
Reviews:
VGBlackwing - The Blake obsession plot with the White Fang was something I came to dislike about her character. She's a huge hypocrite in that she believes that the White Fang are 'misguided' but they literally kill hundreds of people. If I had to choose someone to argue against her beliefs, it would most likely be either one of the two fixers, but don't hold that on me, I'm still brainstorming ideas about the encounter with the White Fang. Anyway, thanks for reading!
TetSuoRai - Binah is one of my favorite characters in the Project Moonverse, I have a thing for characters with smug personalities that are able to destroy me without a single thought. Anyways, thank you for loving this story! I didn't think that people would actually enjoy reading something I scraped together on a whim, but now that I see these reviews, I'm feeling a bit hopeful about this. Oh, if you need a friend on Limbus Company, here's my friend code: L162699891.
Orchidbunny - Now that you mention it, Raven and Binah do share some qualities that I didn't put together. You gave me a few more ideas to think about in the future, but the easiest part to think about right now? It's probably the fact that Raven's dialogue will be much simpler than Binah's. For the life of me, I could not understand how people talk verbosely, it's like trying to extend an essay to match its word count, but worse somehow. Either way, your wish to see more Binah will come true. As for Hod and Tiphereth, Hod will be featured in this chapter while Tiphereth will most likely be the next. Thanks for reading by the way!
Misaka Phenex - Thanks for the good luck and... okay? That Yang comment came out of nowhere.
"Bird?" Hod asked.
Qrow flinched when the Patron Librarian of Philosophy called him out on his transformation ability just from a glance. He didn't know what gave it away but it didn't stop him from feeling weirded out by this woman. Angela and Hod were confused
"Ah yes, I do have ample experience in handling… avian friends, if I may say so." She glared at Qrow with a devilish smile. His instincts immediately cowered in dread under her sight; he didn't know who she was, but it was bad news.
"What do you mean?" Angela inquired. "Surely you don't mean to suggest that Qrow is an actual crow simply because of his name?" She was taken aback by Binah's statement, but one good look at the huntsman makes Angela think otherwise. "I would suggest you explain," Angela directed her question to the huntsman.
Qrow hesitated for a moment before speaking. He was a little apprehensive about talking about magic in front of strangers, but it was his job to inform them. "Let's just say that Oz gave me a certain ability," he explained. "It's a transformation spell, it allows me to turn into a bird, a crow specifically."
Upon hearing this, Angela raised an eyebrow and challenged Qrow's explanation. "I believe that Miss Rose and her team informed us that magic does not exist," she said, referring to when the team of girls were in the Library. Malkuth had compared their Semblances to magic, however, the girls strongly denied that Aura and Dust were magic, stating that it was scientifically guaranteed that Aura was the manifestation of the soul whereas magic just doesn't exist.
Qrow grimaced at the fact that his nieces were here, but corrected the robotic librarian. "Magic does exist, the things it could do are beyond what Aura and Semblances do. It doesn't use Aura or Dust; creates stuff from nothin'."
Just like in the City, magic was also something that Remnant didn't know much of, the only person in the City Angela knew was capable of using something similar to magic was Pluto of the Reverberation Ensemble. His contacts were something even Singularities could not mimic. Angela pushed those thoughts into the back of her mind for later as she looked at the Arbiter. "Binah, how did you know Mr. Branwen uses magic?"
Binah sported a smug grin. "My dear Qrow is much like my floor's own avian creatures. The magic I sense from them is of a similar caliber, and his reaction upon seeing me was akin to how those three birds behave in my presence." Though he disliked being compared to actual birds, he couldn't deny his hesitation about her; it was like she knew everything about him. The expression on her face indicated that she relished his confusion, which only made him more uneasy. "The feathered ones have been quite unruly lately, having escaped the pages of their book. But with a 'little chat', they can be surprisingly well-behaved."
After Roland and half of the Patrons left for Beacon, other issues occurred in the Library. Much like Scorched Girl, some Abnormalities escaped their books which baffled the Librarians. They theorized that as the Library was slowly restoring its Light, it released some of the Abnormalities. Once they escaped, the Abnormalities were split into two categories: Neutral and Hostile. Hostile was self-explanatory, but Neutral Abnormalities were a mixed bag.
Most of the Neutral Abnos didn't outright attack the Patrons, some of them like All-Around Helper, Scorched Girl, and Knight of Despair even wanted to help around the Library for some reason, but few secluded themselves in the bookshelves of the Library; Hod had seen the Wee Witch, Laetitia, reading one of the books on her Floor. It would take a few days to coax the Abnormalities hiding to come out and return them, but as long as they didn't outright seek to harm the Librarians, they would remain a non-priority.
On the other hand, Hostile Abnormalities were to be suppressed immediately. Without many assistant librarians, the rest of the remaining Patrons would have to fight together for the first time. Binah would take a part in most of the suppressions as she was the most experienced fighter present aside from Roland and Gebura. After a few suppressions, only a single Abnormality had escaped in the past two days; it was a brief respite that the Librarians needed.
Back to the discussion, when the Arbiter didn't directly answer Angela's question, the director ignored it. "Everyone is like that when you meet them," Angela sighed as Hod felt a twinge of sympathy for the three birds of the Black Forest. Qrow, on the other hand, placed Binah on his 'People who terrify me' list. If the monsters they kept contained here were scared of her, what does that mean for him? That was like someone making the Grimm afraid of them. He didn't want to know what a 'little chat' was, but he knew that it wouldn't end well for anyone subjected to it.
Feeling exhausted, Qrow tried to stretch his body, but he felt an inexplicable force holding him down. It was as if someone had slathered the chair with super glue, trapping him in place. He lifted his gaze to see the black and gold-clad Patron Librarian, her hand outstretched as if she were grabbing something. Qrow watched in horror as her hand began to glow the same black color as her attire, realizing too late that she had ensnared him, anticipating his attempt at escaping.
Realizing that he was able to move his mouth, he panicked, "What the?" Despite his efforts, he remained trapped, and his panic only intensified when he realized that the black and gold woman before him was reveling in his suffering. Qrow saw that the top half of her face was obscured by darkness, making it impossible to see her eyes. However, her visible smile was unmistakable. It was a grin that belonged to the devil himself.
Meanwhile, Hod, who had been silently observing the encounter, grew increasingly concerned for Qrow's safety as Angela sighed before speaking. "Binah, release him," she commanded.
Following her orders, Binah relinquished her hold on Qrow, but not before flashing him a sinister smile. Despite finally being free, Qrow could barely muster the energy to move. He remained seated, staring at Binah in a state of shock and fear.
"I apologize, dear Qrow," Binah said, her smirk still intact. "I only wished to see your reaction." Qrow shuddered at the realization that she had subjected him to this torment for her own amusement. Without missing a beat, she continued, "This was very interesting; it has been a while since I had conversed with someone new. I will return to my domain, but we can continue this next time if you so choose." Even if her voice was courteous, it was dripped with malice, leaving Qrow with a lingering sense of dread as she left the Floor of Literature.
After she vanished from his sight, Qrow let out a deep breath, loosening his shoulders and leaning back in his chair, tilting his head upward. Angela and Hod witnessed the entire exchange, and both had mixed feelings about their resident Arbiter. They doubted that she was genuinely sorry for locking him but considering it was Binah, whom they barely understood half the time, they ignored it for now. Either way, Hod was still concerned for the huntsman.
"Are you alright Mr. Branwen?"
Qrow lowered his head and met the gaze of the brown librarian. "Yeah, I'm alright, brownie," he replied, forcing a chuckle. "I just didn't expect to get the fear of the gods put into me like that."
Angela drew the attention of the two others and began to explain Binah's unique nature within the Library. "Binah is a special individual in the Library, she is an enigma among our Librarians. Despite her outward calmness, she is ruthless, always enjoying the suffering of others. She would rather leave you with more questions than answers, rarely ever giving a direct explanation." She sighed as she continued, "Binah has indeed mellowed out a bit, but she remains unchanged at her core. As the Librarian Director, I deeply apologize for her actions." She closed her eyes and gave a little bow.
Unlike Angela in the past, Hod appeared to be pleased that the robotic librarian was actually apologizing. Qrow, on the other hand, was still reeling from the recent events, but he courteously responded, albeit with some hesitation, "Uh, yeah, it's... it's alright." Deep down, however, he was cursing Ozpin for sending him here alone, and he made a devious plan to spike Ozpin's hot cocoa as revenge after all of this.
As the huntsman contemplated his plan, Angela had time to process the best choice of action regarding their stay in Remnant. It wasn't a very hard choice, she just needed to go over a few things in her mind. After a few seconds, she gave her response to the alliance from earlier.
"Very well then, regarding our alliance," she paused for dramatic effect. "The Library shall assist Remnant in combating this 'evil entity.' With that, I shall depart. Hod, please escort Mr. Branwen to the exit of the Library," the pale librarian sighed as she snapped her fingers, disappearing into thin air, leaving him and brownie on the latter's floor. The brown librarian was glad that they found an ally in a strange world while Qrow was glad that the discussion went well, except for when Binah came around, but other than that, he thought it went great.
Now that he thought about it, Qrow cringed at the fact that he just jinxed himself for thinking that. He hoped that his Semblance would play nice to him this time around.
Hod spoke up, "Mr. Branwen, follow me." Deciding that it was too much of a hassle to say anything, he rolled with it as long as he didn't see that woman again. Hod walked over to one of the hallways and stood there waiting for him. Not wanting to make a girl wait, he got out of his chair, feeling a bit shaken since he was literally locked in place, but followed the Patron Librarian of Literature.
As he stepped through the doorway into the hallway, Qrow heard a flurry of footsteps approaching him. After that encounter with Binah, he instinctively reached for his weapon and tried to spin around. Hod, who also heard the footsteps, turned to face the source of the noise. Upon seeing the person, she gave out a little smile. Before Qrow could turn in time, the runner crashed into him, causing him to emit a startled yelp. As a result, he tumbled to the ground face-first, with the anonymous individual landing on top of him. Hod, who remained upright, was somewhat worried but also found the situation quite amusing.
On the ground, Qrow strained to lift his head and catch a glimpse of the individual perched atop him. Her appearance was striking, characterized by cascading, deep blue hair that trailed down her back, immense, obsidian eyes with four-pointed stars in the middle, and her mouth formed an upside-down V. The attire she wore was reminiscent of the Patron Librarian of Philosophy, but it was a suit rather than a coat, with gold lines running through the black material. The young woman sat on him as she relentlessly patted his back like a child as if begging for something.
"Bong!" The person shouted, patting his back once more.
'Wut?' Qrow's mind blanked. Did this person just say 'Bong?'
"Bong!"
"Who–?" He was cut off by her hitting him on his back. "Hey! Knock it off."
"Bong?" The blue-haired girl confusingly asked. He tried to get the girl off of him, but she was somehow keeping on. He wouldn't say that she was heavy as that would earn him a ticket to see heaven.
"What are you even saying?" Qrow asked, but heard some snickering in the background. He turned his head the opposite way to see Hod laughing to herself as she watched the two interact. He was baffled to believe that the person who was worried for him earlier was laughing at him right now. "And what are you laughing at, brownie?" He said to Hod.
Still giggling, the brown librarian explained, "Well, this person is BongBong, she's one of Binah's assistant librarians." He turned back to face this 'BongBong' who looked proud of her name.
Before Qrow's arrival, the Arbiter of the Library had already grown weary of conversing with the same Patrons for five days straight and suppressing the released Hostile Abnormalities.
The Librarians were either engrossed in cataloging the world around them or indulging in alcohol, the latter of which was a habit of just one person. Drinking tea and trying to incite discussions among the Patrons didn't help much either.
With Roland and Gebura out, she needed a helping hand in dealing with the Abnormalities. Binah managed to persuade the Librarian Director to bring back her favorite from among the assistant librarians. Although it would require some of their scarce Light, Angela agreed just to get Binah off her back. For the Arbiter, it was a two-for-one deal; she would get to have someone to help with the suppressions and someone to talk with.
The name Binah gave the huntsman chills, but it was drowned out by the name 'BongBong', he voiced his thoughts. "What the hell kind of name is that? Even my dad gave me a better name." Even though he and his sister were named after birds, BongBong was a terrible name.
With a flinch at the huntsman's words, Hod sadly explained. "Back when Lobotomy Corporation was still active, BongBong suffered a mental breakdown during an abnormality breach." The brown librarian looked a bit hesitant to continue, but Qrow needed to know.
"When the facility reset, a little malfunction during the reset didn't restore her mind and it left her brain damaged; the damage was severe enough that she's only able to say 'Bong'. And since almost all employee files were destroyed during the breach and we didn't get her real name before, we chose a name based on what she kept saying and she accepted it."
Qrow cringed when she finished talking. 'Crap…' Qrow felt like an asshole. Even if he didn't know about it, he still felt like one. "Ah shit, sorry about bringing up your… condition," He said before offering something. "If it makes ya feel any better, I'll do one thing for ya, as long as it's within reason."
"Bong!" If he had to guess, it was an 'alright.'
"Later though, because I'm starting to fall asleep on the very 'comfortable' wooden floor," he sarcastically said.
"Bong! Bong Bong Bong!"
"I still have no idea what she's saying." Even if he was talking to her, it would be a one-way street as there was a massive communication barrier. However, the other person near them spoke up.
Hod chimed in, translating, "BongBong wants to see your magic." The huntsman looked at her, taken aback by how she could decipher the "Bongs."
Sensing his confusion, she stammered out an explanation, "Oh, right. When you spend enough time with BongBong, you start to understand her a bit. Although, I don't even fully understand her most of the time. For some reason, Binah and another one of our assistant librarians are the only ones who seem to understand her entirely." Qrow simply sighed and accepted that he would never understand BongBong.
Even though he was tired and hadn't drunk any alcohol since his time with Netzach, he would get over this and go home. Since it would be a pain to transform and have her crush him, Qrow gestured for her to move aside, and she did so. As he rose to his feet, the huntsman realized how short the girl was, barely reaching his chest. BongBong gazed up at him with those starry eyes he'd only seen on his niece before she piped up.
"Bong!" Her eyes grew wider in anticipation of his magic.
With a sigh, he shifted into his corvid form, black smoke appearing around him. Once the black smoke faded away, the red-eyed crow peered back at the blue-haired girl, who leaped up in glee. On the other hand, Hod looked at Qrow's corvid form and took note of how ominous the animal looked; it kinda did feel like one of the birds of the Black Forest.
The crow cawed at the blue-haired librarian assistant.
"Bong?" She looked at the corvid with a curious look that somehow worried the avian huntsman. With a single step, BongBong got closer for some reason.
Qrow apprehensively crowed as she got closer.
"Bong. Bong Bong," she explained as if he would understand.
The avian huntsman ruffled his feathers, swiveling his head to face Hod, silently requesting a translation. However, the brown librarian's confused expression left him a bit disheartened. He was about to revert to his human form when the blue-haired girl beside him interjected once more, capturing his attention.
Without warning, she sprang towards him, exclaiming "Bong!" before he could even react. In one swift motion, she scooped him up, cradling him under her arms. Hod was a bit shocked that the assistant suddenly grabbed him and the crow cried out from being bird-handled as BongBong rushed through the Library. The brown librarian, who was slower than the blue-haired girl, could not catch up as she watched the two disappear around a corner. The echoes of the crow's protests gradually fading away.
"Oh no…" Hod worriedly said as she remembered where this hallway went. Angela had specifically instructed her to escort the huntsman to the exit since she needed to consult with Hokma about some things about the City. However, the lively blue-haired assistant had bolted up the Library, leaving Hod in the dust. There was only one place where BongBong could've gone.
–FLOOR OF PHILOSOPHY'S LOUNGE, THE LIBRARY–
"Bong!" The blue-haired assistant librarian bellowed as soon as she caught sight of her Patron Librarian.
Reading a book, the Patron lowered it to see her assistant librarian running to her. "Oh? BongBong?" Binah called out. "What seems to be the problem, child?"
In a flurry of excitement, the blue-haired girl thrust the squawking object toward Binah, presenting it with a flourish. The object, which happened to be the huntsman in bird form, struggled to free itself from BongBong's clutches, clearly agitated by being held like an object. However, Binah couldn't help but grin at the sight of the chaotic scene unfolding before her. As soon as the crow caught sight of the Patron's expression, it fell silent, overcome by a sense of dread.
Binah leaned in close to the bird's face and spoke, her devious grin never faltering, much to Qrow's unease. "It seems our esteemed guest has decided to accept my invitation for more discourse," she purred, relishing in the discomfort etched on Qrow's avian features.
Speaking of Qrow, he discovered something he hadn't known before. Once he was in his corvid form, he was not able to transform back if someone was touching him. In all the possible ways to figure this out, he blamed everything that's happened today on his Semblance.
Binah straightened herself up and extended an invitation to Qrow. "Well then, I hope you can spare some time for tea with me since you're already here," she offered graciously, but to Qrow, it sounded like he had no choice. "Dakota makes an excellent brewing rival for my sharp-tongued purple-haired colleague." Another name that Qrow didn't know, but he would probably find out soon.
Glancing back into the room, Qrow couldn't help but feel a sense of surrealism wash over him. It was an eerie place, almost magical in its own right. The blackened stone tiles of the floor seemed to shimmer, leading towards a path that disappeared into what appeared to be a black forest. Rows of bookshelves made from tree trunks lined the walls, typical of the Library's lounges. Above, the bright yellow stars hung in midair, seemingly suspended from the non-existent ceiling that went into the stars of the night sky.
As Qrow continued to survey his surroundings, his sharp eyes caught sight of someone in the distance, busily tending to a kitchen filled with teapots and other brewing equipment. It was most likely Dakota, he surmised, brewing tea for Binah.
"BongBong, would you be so kind as to release Qrow?" Binah asked with an uncharacteristically pleasant tone, her attention fixed on the avian assistant. Qrow braced himself for the worst as Binah's sharp gaze turned to him. "I'm afraid my feathered friend here won't be able to fully appreciate the intricacies of tea in this form."
As BongBong complied with a "Bong!", dropping him unceremoniously to the ground, Qrow's body erupted in a cloud of black smoke and he was human once again. Groaning, he picked himself up and made his way to the opposite side of the table where Binah had already taken a seat.
While he walked, Binah instructed BongBong to inform Dakota that they required tea. BongBong saluted dutifully and rushed off to the kitchen area. Binah's grin widened as she watched the blue-haired assistant approach the purple-haired one who seemed less than thrilled to be brewing tea for them.
Now that he was seated down, Qrow looked at his kidnapper's boss. "What the hell am I doing here? Did you send her after me?" He knew Binah enjoyed tormenting him, but he believed that Binah herself would be doing the tormenting instead of using others.
Binah's amusement faded, replaced by a cool demeanor. "That child acted on her own accord," she replied, her voice level. "I merely gave her the knowledge that you possess arcane powers. She took off without hesitation. Sometimes, BongBong is too impulsive for her own good."
Now that he got to 'talk' to her a bit more, he understood why the Librarian Director said that Binah was an enigma. It felt like she cared, but didn't at the same time. He knew another person like that, but he wasn't all too happy to be thinking about that person.
Back to reality, he was surprised to hear Binah actually answer him. "I see…" He trailed off, however, he wanted to know something. "I gotta ask, who the hell are you?" Qrow knew that Binah was bad news, and he doesn't think that Ozpin wants such a wild card to be playing the game alongside them.
Binah smirked at his question. "At the moment, I am simply a librarian," she replied. "If you're referring to my previous role, it could be compared to that of an 'executioner.'" She enjoyed the way Qrow flinched at the mention of the word 'executioner,' and her smirk grew wider.
After a few moments of quiet, the sound of approaching footsteps drew Qrow's attention. He looked up to see BongBong and Dakota carrying a pot of tea and two cups toward the table. BongBong deftly placed a cup in front of each of them while Dakota poured the warm liquid from the pot as if they were perfectly trained to serve.
Binah wasted no time in picking up her cup and savoring the flavor of the tea. Qrow followed suit, taking up the white cup adorned with golden lines. The red tea inside was fragrant with a honey-like aroma. Although he preferred alcohol, he had no issue with tea. 'Summer would've loved this,' he thought to himself as he took a sip.
The warm liquid flowed over his tongue, surprising him with its perfect taste. It was smooth with a hint of liquor and a touch of smoky overtones that added complexity without being overwhelming. The sweetness was a pleasant surprise, and the combination of flavors made it the best tea he had ever tasted. Without hesitation, Qrow drank more of the tea, relishing its unique and strong taste.
After placing the empty cup onto its tray, Qrow couldn't help but ask Binah, "What kind of tea was that? It tasted great." The Patron Librarian's reaction was different from before; instead of her usual smug grin, she replied with an amused smile.
"That was Yunnan tea, one of my favorites," she answered, taking another sip. "It has a slightly strong taste that many people don't enjoy, but I find it to be perfectly balanced among teas." Binah continued, "Before you arrived, I received information that you're quite fond of strong alcoholic beverages. So, I took the liberty of persuading my purple-haired child to brew us some Yunnan tea." The purple-haired assistant looked a bit annoyed as their eye twitched at Binah's words.
Qrow directed his attention to the purple-haired assistant who was giving him a look that clearly said 'I don't want to be here.' He silently sympathized with the kid, but couldn't deny that he was thoroughly enjoying the tea.
After an awkward silence, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed in the room. Qrow turned his attention to the doorway as Hod, Netzach, and an unfamiliar person holding a coffee mug walked in. Hod was the first to speak up.
"Ah! Mr. Branwen, are you alright?" The trio made their way to the table, with Hod bringing Chesed and Netzach along for backup. They initially thought it wasn't necessary, but once Binah's name was mentioned, they were quick to lend a hand. "Ms. Angela instructed me to guide you to the exit, but I failed," she added, her expression reflecting disappointment.
Qrow tried to lighten the mood and said, "It's not your fault. Blame the blue-haired kid," nodding towards BongBong who was standing nearby. In response, she gave a hefty salute.
Netzach standing next to Hod felt annoyed that he was called there for no reason, but he became interested in what was happening. Meanwhile, Chesed took a sip from his coffee mug, only to discover that the bottom had shattered. He looked baffled and annoyed as he examined the cup.
Observing this, Qrow mentally apologized and then asked the blue-haired assistant, "So, what did you want in the first place, kid?"
In response, she proceeded to recount the greatest thing she had ever heard: powerful individuals wielding powerful magic? She could not pass up this chance at seeing actual magic. BongBong remembered her time at a circus in the City, they planned to show off magic, but she spotted the disguised magic trick instantly, and they dared to trick her. But now, here in a different world with different rules and abilities, she was more than excited to explore Remnant. With her words carrying the weight of a thousand men, she began to captivate her audience of Librarians and one huntsman.
"Bong Bong BongBong Bong. Bong Bong Bong~? Bong BongBong Bong, BongBongBong Bong Bong BongBong. BongBong Bong Bong BongBong Bong BongBong, BongBongBong Bong! BongBong, Bong Bong Bong, BongBong."
The entire audience, except for Binah and Dakota, had a unanimous thought.
'What?'
Hod and Chesed had a sort of confused but amused smile, Netzach had his mouth a bit gaped in bafflement, Qrow had his hands covering his face as he leaned into the table, and Binah was quietly sipping her tea as if nothing happened while Dakota stood there with a dead expression. Even if they had spent some time learning how BongBong spoke, they couldn't decipher half of it, only getting the fact that she liked magic. If the other librarians were puzzled, then Qrow was twice as bewildered. The ones who didn't fully understand refrained from asking what BongBong had said since the assistant librarian was standing there with a self-satisfied expression, eyes shut in triumph. They didn't want to upset her and the two others who did understand didn't bother to translate.
Qrow couldn't help but feel disappointed as he looked at the Librarians. 'These are our new allies?' He thought. Despite being told by the Librarian Director that they were one of the most dangerous entities in the City, he had yet to witness their combat prowess firsthand. With the Library appearing out of nowhere after the Fall Maiden's attack, it was very coincidental that both of them happened. He wasn't calling bullshit on their story, but it just felt off. At this moment, all he saw were either normal people like Hod and Netzach or downright crazy like Binah and BongBong. In the end, he believed that the Library was either a blessing or a curse. Qrow just hoped that Ozpin had made the right decision.
A sound above the huntsman made him snap out of his thoughts. He bent his head upward to see a small white figure on a branch of a tree next to them. It was a bird with a red mark on its chest. The sight made Qrow a bit curious but remembered something about Binah taking care of weird birds.
–A FEW HOURS LATER–
–OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY, EMERALD FOREST–
It had been too much to handle in one day. Qrow left the Library rubbing his now bruised head, the little birdie shit decided to peck at him when he least expect it. It hurt like hell and wanted to punch the animal, but he was held back by the Patron Library of Philosophy as she locked him again for the second time today. He decided to go to a bar once he reached Vale. As he gazed out at the lush green forest, he realized that the sky had darkened considerably. It was around the afternoon that he came here, but now it was night.
After Binah had sent the white bird away deep into the lounge's bookshelves, Angela and Hokma arrived shortly to clean up the mess; well, mainly Angela who snapped her fingers to clean up the spilled coffee on the ground. During Qrow's kidnap, Angela was preoccupied with talking to the Floor of Religion's Patron and didn't realize Qrow was still inside the Library. After a little discussion regarding the publicity of the Library, she apologized bluntly and snapped her fingers, sending him outside.
The Library was shrouded in a similar mist to how it worked back in the City. People wouldn't be able to see it from a distance, but it wouldn't take long until some random huntsman or civilian would notice the giant tower in the middle of the Emerald Forest when they got close. Qrow reassured the Librarians that Opzin would come up with something in the meantime while the Library regains its strength. He wondered what the headmaster would come up with, but would ask later.
Once he was about to transform into his corvid form, he suddenly questioned why Angela didn't send him outside the Library using her teleportation powers to send him to the exit earlier. However, he quickly shrugged off the thought after a few seconds and transformed anyway. He would need to inform Ozpin, but decided that the conversation would take place later.
However, he did not notice something staring at him in the distance; their red eyes watched as Qrow took off into the sky. The animal looked back at the Library's entrance to see it close shut. They knew that it wouldn't open for anyone, only for the occupants of the tower as they witnessed a few days earlier. Without any hesitation, the animal flew off following the huntsman.
–TOMORROW MORNING–
–HALLWAYS, BEACON ACADEMY–
One of the passing students let out a yawn on an early Monday morning. Roland and Yesod had to wake up early to ensure they got a bullhead before students or staff took them. The black fixer also yawned and covered his mouth before scratching the back of his head. Despite this, Yesod remained unfazed by the early morning.
Roland couldn't help but ask, "How in the hell do you not feel tired?"
Yesod gave him a sharp look but replied, "I prefer to work at my optimal level; missing deadlines is unacceptable."
"Wow, even waking up is a job for you," Roland deadpanned. "Sounds like a rough life motto." Even though they'd been co-workers for some months at this point, the black fixer has never seen Yesod take a break or sleep at all in the Library.
If Yesod was bothered by the early morning start, he didn't show it. Instead, he focused on two bullheads on the helipads in the distance. As they approached, they saw a group of students also heading in that direction. Roland recognized the rabbit faunus he had met a few days ago, who had been bullied by Cardin and the girl with a beret and sunglasses in the school's library. He concluded that the two other students must be part of their team.
Velvet's rabbit ears twitched as she heard footsteps nearby. She turned her head to see the black-suited man and his supposed contractor approaching. The rest of her team noticed her reaction and followed her gaze. The team of students stopped and waited until the two Librarians caught up with them.
Roland spoke up first with that friendly personality of his, "Hey, Velvet, right?" He remembered her name but tried to come off as casual.
"Yep, nice to see you again, Mr. Roland," she replied happily. Velvet was dressed in a cropped brown jacket and brown shorts instead of the usual student uniform. Underneath the jacket, she had on a thin black top, and she accessorized her outfit with gold shoulder plates, cuffs, and a belt, all of which had intricate decorative designs. Attached to her belt was a box that the black fixer deduced as her weapon, as everything in Remnant seemed to be a weapon in some way.
Disregarding her outfit, Roland noticed that she seemed more outgoing than when they first met, maybe because the bullying had stopped. Regardless, everything seemed fine now. Velvet saw Yesod standing nearby and asked, "Is he your employer?"
Although it was an act, it wasn't much different from how it was in the Library. Most of the Patrons had bossed him around, but Malkuth, Hod, Netzach, and Chesed were the only ones who treated him equally. Yesod had a small smirk on his face as he held out his hand and replied, "Yesod, Roland's boss." When the two shook hands, the black fixer could help but feel his eye twitch a bit as he added that last part.
Velvet's female teammate, the stylishly dressed girl, lowered her sunglasses to meet Roland's gaze before speaking. "You're the guy we saw at the library," she said, examining his outfit critically. "Hmm, nicely dressed, good fit, good looks. You're not too shabby. If you added more color and tightened that tie, you'd look even better. The monotone look is cool, but it lacks creativity," she analyzed. Yesod, who didn't realize it, seemed a little annoyed that Roland still hadn't fixed his tie, but he didn't do anything.
Roland felt a bit insulted by her comments about his attire, but he didn't take her words to heart. "I'll take that as a compliment," he replied, extending his hand. "Roland."
"Coco. Leader of Team CFVY," she said, grasping his hand and shaking it before smirking. "Firm grip too." The way she said it implied something else, but Roland didn't want to bring it up. He could tell from the leader's two other teammates' reactions that this was normal. After they let go, Coco gestured to her other two teammates to introduce themselves. "This is Fox."
The copper-haired, dark-skinned boy wearing a sleeveless dark orange vest walked up to the two Librarians. Both of them noticed his eyes: pure white. The boy was blind, but that apparently didn't stop him from training to become a huntsman. Much like the blonde brawler of Team RWBY, Fox wore a pair of gauntlets but they were red in color and had blades attached. In the City, there weren't many blind citizens, as they were either killed at a young age or had enough money to buy artificial eyes.
As the dark-skinned boy walked over, it became apparent that he somehow knew where they were, even though he couldn't see. Fox extended his hand for both of them to shake; jokingly, Roland attempted to evade the handshake by raising his hand slightly, but the blind boy followed the black fixer's hand upward and grasped his hand. When they shook hands, Roland was a bit taken aback by this. After the handshake, Yesod walked up and normally shook Fox's hand without issue.
Coco noticed Roland's confusion and explained, "Fox here could sense Aura from people, it's not hard for him to recognize a pair of handsome men like you." The only response Fox gave was a simple nod. This single interaction just gave the two Librarians evidence that they indeed have Aura. But it begged the question: they knew that all living beings that had a soul had Aura, but would they be different considering they were made out of Light, the manifestation of one's mind?
Their pondering would come to a stop once the last member of Team CFVY stepped up. He was a very tall and athletic-looking boy; taller than both Roland and Yesod. He had a shaved head and was wearing a green robe and brown pants held together by belts. A pair of green bracers and a green-colored shoulder plate on his left arm were covering his body. His weapon was the obvious dual-edged copper greatsword on his back. Unlike most weapons from Remnant, it seemed like his weapon was not a gun.
The boy introduced himself in a stoic voice, "Yatsuhashi," and refrained from offering a handshake like his teammates. The Librarians didn't inquire about the gesture and instead, Roland posed a different question.
"What brings you guys here?" He asked.
The leader of Team CFVY responded first. "We got a mission to clear out a bunch of Grimm near a village outside of Vale; think it was called Sumire or something, but the local huntsmen need some help since Grimm activity has been increasing," she sighs heavily, before continuing. "I despise that second-years have to do missions this early into the semester," she grimaces. "I wanted to go to Vale to shop for more clothes, a new trend is happening and I don't want to miss it."
Velvet, the cheerful girl she was, tried to reassure her leader, "Well, if we finish early, we can be back in time to go shopping."
Coco smiled as she grabbed the rabbit faunus and pulled her into a hug. "Aw, that's my little bun-bun," the leader teased. "You always know what to say." Not even struggling to escape, Velvet just flushed red in embarrassment. The others gave a small smile as Coco finished squeezing the life out of her teammate. She turned to Roland and Yesod, curiously asking a question. "So, what about you guys?"
"We are going to return to our headquarters to inform our superiors about what we learned here at Beacon," Yesod bluntly stated. The students just hummed in acknowledgment; if it didn't concern them, then they didn't need to know more.
Coco, looking up at the sky, called out to her team, "Come on, we're burning daylight." She turned to look at the two Librarians. "We'll be going now. See you hunks later~." She began to walk toward one of the bullheads, followed by the rest of her team after they apologized for her behavior and said their goodbyes. Well, it was mostly Velvet who apologized and said goodbye, while the other two didn't say anything but nodded.
Seeing them enter their airship prompted the two Librarians to enter theirs as well. As they stepped into the bullhead, they were greeted by a cheerful voice from the pilot, who was waiting for them in the passenger bay.
"Hey there, you must be the special guests I'm dropping off," said the pilot, her voice muffled by her mask. The Librarians nodded in confirmation. "Ozpin warned me that your mission is top secret, so make sure you don't involve me or my ship in any trouble, got it?"
The Librarians nodded in understanding, assuring her that they wouldn't try to involve her in any way. With that, the bullhead's doors sealed shut and the engines silently whirred to life. As the airship lifted off the ground, the Librarians settled into their seats for the long journey ahead. It would take a few hours to reach the Emerald Forest, but for now, all they could do was wait.
—A FEW HOURS LATER—
—EMERALD FOREST—
"Preparing to land," the pilot said on the intercom. Yesod turned up from reading on his scroll to see Roland laying on the seats of the bullhead, sleeping. Sighing, he walked over to the black fixer and was going to wake him up, but suddenly, he got an idea. Smirking, he opened the camera app on his scroll.
With a snap, the purple librarian examined the image. It featured a sleeping Roland with drool running down his face and his arms hanging off the seat. This wasn't just for fun and games, it was mainly to show off the technologies Remnant had to show to the rest of the Librarians.
When the bullhead actually touched down, the airship shook which made the black fixer roll off his makeshift bed and onto the floor with a loud sound. Groaning, he pushed himself up and stared at Yesod who had his scroll pointed at Roland, a red dot flashing on it, signaling to the black fixer that Yesod just recorded that embarrassing moment.
Roland let out a sigh and stood up, yawning as he spoke, "So we here?" The black fixer walked to one of the windows seeing the lush green trees of the Emerald Forest, confirming his question. The bullhead's doors started to open with the ramp extending to the ground.
The bullhead's pilot came into the passenger bay and called out to the two men. Under her helmet, the pilot sported a worried tone. "Alright, I'mma return back to Beacon and come back tomorrow around the afternoon," she paused before continuing. "I still don't know why you two are heading into a Grimm-infested forest, but I'm just saying this in case… stay safe." To her, she saw two seemingly unarmed men about to walk to their death. If anything, she was mainly looking at the black fixer out of the two for some reason.
Her voice felt sincere like the black fixer had heard before, he just couldn't put his finger on it. "I don't do promises," he paused. "But we'll try." She nodded as she turned around to enter the pilot's cabin of the bullhead. Before she left, something in his gut made him call out to her, "Wait, what was your name?" The black fixer felt off, he didn't know why he was acting like this, but his question would soon be answered.
After a few seconds, the pilot politely began to take off her helmet, as it came off, long, silvery-white hair cascaded down her back, framing her beautiful face. The black fixer's eyes widened as her once-closed eyes opened, revealing a pair of striking sky-blue orbs that seemed to gaze straight through him. After seeing his reaction, she hastily turned her gaze away
"I'm Angelina," she replied softly. "Angelina Onyx."
Author's Notes:
Chapter 9 Complete!
Dialogue is probably one of my weakest writing skills as well as providing enough information without under-informing or over-informing the readers. But regardless, there are so many things happening in this chapter. BongBong, our favorite nugget, made an entrance! I've read so many fanfics where BongBong had no reason as to why she's like that so I made up my own version of BongBong with her own backstory for this story. If you want to know what our favorite nugget said, basically... imagine what you want. It's up to you guys to decipher what she said, I'm most likely coping with the fact that I can't remember why I put it in, but I'm pretty sure I had a good reason for it. Team CFVY was finally introduced since we last saw half of them at the school's library, I had to change up the canon version of RWBY where they head to Sumire after the Fall of Beacon to now during the first semester of the year. As for the mysterious white-haired lady, I'm pretty sure the readers who finished LoR know who this person is. As for why she's here, she's one of the interesting ideas I had in my mind so I hope that it all works out in the end. The reasons why I chose Angelina Onyx as her name is because both Angelica and Angelina refer to 'angels' which are typically associated with the color white while Onyx is explanatory as it is a black stone that represents grief and loss which ties into Roland's "Gone Angels."
The next chapter will mainly focus on Tiphereth and Team RWBY.
Anyway, leave a review if I forgot a detail or if there's a grammar mistake because I don't have any beta readers and I know that there's going to be a single grammar mistake that will actually annoy me until I find it.
