Stefan was about to say yes, but he hesitated.
Caroline: "Hesitation isn't a yes."
Stefan: "I've been in love from the moment I met her."
Caroline: "That's because you thought she was Katherine."
Stefan: "No. If she was like Katherine she would be dead already."
Caroline: "Wait-"
Stefan: "What?"
Caroline: "You said that when Damon came to Mystic Falls he was looking for Katherine, right?"
Stefan: "We both were…but yes he was."
Caroline: "What if Elena is just a replacement Katherine? What if he wants to test and see if she is like Katherine?"
Stefan: "But she isn't…"
Caroline: "Exactly, and once he finds that out, maybe he will leave her. He just wants another Katherine."
Stefan smiled, it all made sense: "I'm gonna go talk to Elena, see if I can get anything out of her."
Caroline: "Call me later!"
And with that, Stefan was gone.
Damon was lurking around his original stomping grounds of Mystic Grill. He was bored. He had no brother, no friend, but he got the girl. He finally got her. The real question was, did he want her? She was nothing like Katherine. He loved Katherine. He loved everything about her, he loved the blood craving they both shared, and they were lovers and enemies at the same time. It made for some pretty good sex. Damon was wondering if he really wanted Elena's looks and Katherine's personality. No, no, no, he had to shake this thought out of his head. For the past three and a half years he has always wanted Elena, he hated Katherine. But did he really? Maybe he needed to get wasted to figure it all out.
Damon [using compulsion]: "Give me the whole bottle of scotch."
Bartender: "Of course."
Stefan was about to knock on Elena's door when she opened it.
Elena: "I heard you coming."
Stefan: "Do you want to talk to me?"
Elena: "More than anything."
Elena moved out of the doorway and let Stefan in.
Stefan: "How are things with Damon?"
Elena: "Fine…why are you asking about Damon? Wouldn't you want to be talking about us?"
Stefan: "I love you more than anything…"
Elena: "I loved you too."
Stefan had noticed she put it in past tense and he knew it was pretty much over.
Stefan: "Are you happy?"
Elena: "Yeah, at least I think I am."
Stefan: "What do you mean 'you think'?"
Elena: "I can't shake this feeling that Damon is just using me as a replacement."
Stefan: "A replacement of what?"
Elena: "Katherine."
